Re: [slim] Can I use a SB receiver as a wireless bridge?

2009-04-23 Thread MrSqueezy

Thank you all for your help. I am now happy that the SB does what I
would like in terms on network connectivity. My only concern now is
that of reliability in terms of streaming wirelessly. This seems to be
one of the main issues that people have.

I already have devices located near to where I would place SBRs, that
connect perfectly well wirelessly to my network. However I am told that
this is no garauntee that the SBRs will function reliably. I guess I'm
just looking for some reassurance that I'm not going to be wasting my
money going down the SB route.

[slim] How to get Winamp to play FLAC stream from SqueezeCenter

2009-04-23 Thread milosz

My library is all FLAC files; my Squeezeboxes and SoftSqueeze connect
just fine. I can connect Winamp to http://servername:9000/stream.mp3
just fine

But how do I get Winamp to play the stream as FLAC? Winamp can play
FLAC files in file-playing mode, but trying to play the stream off the
SqueezeCenter as FLAC doesn't seem to work.

I assume that playing the URL http://servername:9000/ in Winamp should
just connect and play the FLAC stream, but Winamp does not connect using
that URL (I also tried http://servername:9000/stream.flac and
http://servername:9000/stream.fla same problem, would not connect)

SqueezeCenter log says: there's nothing in the log for the Winamp
connection attempt
Wianmp says: [error syncing to stream]

That way they could get to market much quicker. I think the ony thing
missing from iPeng is a bit of polish on the UI and Logitech could
easily do this.

Re: [slim] iTunes and Squeezebox

2009-04-23 Thread Chunkywizard

Hi there,

I use iTunes and SqueezeCentre fine together. It just depends what
information you want to use from iTunes in SC and whether you want it
one way or two-ways. If you have rated all of your tracks in iTunes (as
I have) then you need to use the TrackStat/ Custom Scan/ Dynamic
Playlists PlugIns from erland. If you wish to import certain tags or
convert them custom scan can do this as well. Custom Scan also imports
play counts. If you wish SC to update all this information then read it
back into iTunes then Custom Scan can do this as well (using the iTunes
Export function) but it's a manual process, you have to run a script
(which I guess could be automated through a batch process).

Anyway, it's all doable, you need to start by reading erlands wiki and
downloading the plug-ins. If you have any questions then just ask.

SoftSqueeze is a Java emulator for Squeezeboxes and SqueezePlay is the

Softsqueeze works, but is clunky. It's java, an interpreted
languageeven on a fast PC(4.1 gHz, dual core) the app feels like
all the controls have a built in lag- not a good user experience,
really. Feels kinda like you're tuning a radio with oven mitts on. And
it's buggy. Every PC I've used it on, after you jump around on a few
tracks it hangs.

I've tried Squeezeplay but that doesn't really seems to be ready to
come out of the lab. I wouldn't really call that a product just yet.

Can any of the Linux players play a FLAC stream? Beep, Banshee, Xine?

Most any WiFi device or application will show available networks. But

You are probably good to go, but if the ten closest WiFi's are also on

issues. As you say, these other ch 1's are quite weak so it probably
makes little difference. You can always move it back to ch 1 if you
choose.

It doesn't hurt to check the surrounding WiFi's every couple of months
to see if a new one pops up. Now that you know what to look for and
how to do it, it only takes about 30 seconds. :)

Not directly. You can use TrackInfor when you browse to a Track (e.g.
through Albums, you usually get to TrackInfo by using a hold gesture
on a track).
For the current playlist this will come in 1.2

 * Would I get the same functionaliy by creating a playlisy on the fly

What do you mean? You always create a playlist when you play
something with your Squeezebox. You can also add tracks instead of
plain playing:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-application/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/general-usability/

What you can not do so far (another 1.2 feature) is save a playlist.

Re: [slim] From OS X to Windows

2009-04-23 Thread JMG

Thanks to all for the replies!

Maybe I should have mentionned that my collection is comprised of more
than 3400 CD (50700 songs) converted in Apple Lossless. (In fact, I
have more CD to rip, but my 1Tb disk is full and I wait (or try to
wait) until big, cheap SS disks become available (hopefully in 2010).)
Search is slow, but acceptable. What is really slow is scan, especially
covers...

SO the need for a faster computer. Generic (non-apple) seems the more
cost-effective solution to me. I can have a microtower with 2.5 MHz
Intel Core2 duo, ASUS motherboard, 2Gb memory, 320G HD, GeForce 7050
256mb, DVD burner, 5.1 HD surround sound (not that I need this), etc,
etc., for about the price of a used Mac Mini G4... But friends tell me
that I am bitterly going to regret taking the PC route, that Windows XP
is a piece of that don’t works half of the time, very difficult to
set, etc. On the other hand, millions of people do real work on
Windows, no? So it must work with a OK stability, isn’t it? Of course,
there is the Linux or dedicated music box (vortex) way. Just some
thoughts...

Is there a way to have Squeeze Center automatically grab the podcasts

[slim] Favorite service?

I've been using Pandora, and so far it really suites my needs. I also
have a Sirius account that I used for my car which works great too.

What is your favorite service and why?

Is there a way to have Squeeze Center automatically grab the podcasts

the same podcasts I'm subscribed to in itunes.

Ok so I've got this working again, the pesky javascript had turned
itself off :-(

It's still not perfect though, the next/previous test and the rhs
overlaps the progress bar and when you click the song title the
resultant page formating isn't great with the pic and text overlapping,
is this normal ?

Re: [slim] From OS X to Windows

2009-04-23 Thread agillis

JMG,

Windows runs fine. It's just a lot of overhead for a server. For a
music collection that large I would recommend a PC based server running
that spans over multiple 1 TB drives.

VortexBox has an installation option that automatically sets up drive
spanning.

Gotta agree with Goodsounds here.

JMG, get new friends.

If they were talking about Vista when it first came out, that position
would have had some merit. But about XP now? Not a chance.

I do believe that Linux is the best answer, but only if you have a

Just some
 thoughts...

 JMG

Windows is not pure evil, it will just waste assets, have way more
overhead, and if the server in on net be more open to viruses and
attacks.

For that many CDs, I would build my own for sure with vortexbox or
Ubuntu for the OS. I think you are still thinking PC not server. No
need to pay for things that don't get used much or really don't matter
for the application. One needs a good CPU, 2 GB RAM, a good NIC or good
built in LAN, and just a simple onboard video, enough big drives, and
one of the free OS (Ubuntu, Vortexbox, or other Linux). If it's a true
dedicated music server, one doesn't need fancy video, sound, or other
add-ons. Other then ripping (if one does that on their server), one can
even go headless.

This is only my opinion and experience as I have a very large CD
collection. I used a PC to start, then out grew two NAS boxes (ReadyNAS
NV+ then Thecus N5200Pro), then built my own dedicated SC Server. All is
now right with my music world, I could have saved time and lots of money
just building the correct SC Server to start with. I use Ubuntu and my
Mother, Sister, and Uncle are using old PCs that I put Vortexbox on.

Come, come, this really isn't a helpful comment. Windows will work just
fine for his intended use. Or for any other intended use, just as would
any operating system. If you don't like Windows, don't use it.

For what purpose would you want that? The last.fm library stores what
you have scrobbled, via whatever device, or directly from the Last.FM
