[slim] Synology NAS / X10 interconnect
Hello, I am regarding to use X10 protocol to switch on/off my amps from my SBC (duet). I saw some topics about Firecracker but this small RF transmitter/receptor needs a serial port. My Squeezecenter is installed on a Synology NAS (DS-207+) which is not equipped with serial port ? Is there any solution to interconnect NAS and X10 with Squeezecenter ? Thanks. [slim] Compilations not working
Hi I have searched for answers to this, so apologies if it has been covered already. I am running Squeezecenter on Mac OS10.5.7 indexing my iTunes library. I cannot for the life of me get compilations to appear in the same album. Instead, I am getting multiple instances of the album name, each with only one song. When I noticed this, I went back and realised that iTunes was also not capturing the fact that it was a compilation, so I turned that on (it now works fine) and did a complete library rescan. I am still having no luck. I'd sure appreciate any assistance that others can offer. Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?
interesting discussion. my view hasn't changed from when i first got my SB. essentially, i love the hardware and the audio quality, and i think the SBC concept, or pippins apps, are great as well. but the software, despite its many strengths and bells and whistles, is just fatally flawed. it is complex, it is not user friendly, it is a resource hog, it isn't fast, it isn't fun, it isn't intuitive, it isn't well documented... i could go on. i look at a product like tivo, and i see a product designed for the masses that can still do very complex things. i only see the second half of that when i look at SC. i still don't understand why there isn't an "all in the one box" solution available for example, or why optionally including video (on some new product) is so taboo, (meaning on screen HUD as well as video streaming). why can't winamp power the hardware via a plugin? why can't itunes treat a SB as if it were an airport express? just giving customers funner software like winamp to power the device would really deliver it to the masses! how about OS drivers that can handle the TCP/IP bit? i'm not saying all or any of these ideas is the right idea, but i am saying that IF the idea is to deliver slim stuff to the masses, something has to give. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbr (parent's home) - w/sc 7.3.3b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63775 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge
Squeezeslave 0.9 is now available at https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105169&package_id=176494 What's new in Squeezeslave 0.9 Replay gain now supported with Squeezecenter v7.4 r26720 or later. Positive dB replay gain values are ignored to prevent clipping. Patches are included for squeezecenter 7.3.3 and 7.2.2 running on linux/solaris. Enabling replay gain for a squeezeslave player without the appropriate patch applied to squeezecenter is not recommended or supported. Slimp3 style display and keyboard support for linux with Squeezecenter v7.4 r26720 or later. Support for External LCD displays and IR remotes are provided using LCDd and lirc respectively (linux only). A .lircrc config file for the slimdevices remote is included. See --help for details. Patches are included for squeezecenter 7.3.3 and 7.2.2 running on linux/solaris. Thanks to Adrian Smith for getting the display and replay gain changes into Squeezecenter 7.4. Stream position reporting no longer resets to zero after a pause/unpause. --oldplayer/-O option has been removed as the latest versions of Squeezecenter's softsqueeze playertype fails to advance to the next track in the playlist. The --playerid/-e option can be used to force squeezeslave to connect using the softsqueeze player type if needed. --debuglog/-Y option added to send all message to the given filename instead of the current display. Useful when running squeezeslave in interactive (display) mode to keep any error messages from corrupting the display output. Source code has been moved to Google Code. It will no longer be available as a tarball. You can browse the source 'here' (http://code.google.com/p/squeezeslave/source/browse/#svn/squeezeslave/trunk/squeezeslave) or download it with subversion. svn checkout http://squeezeslave.googlecode.com/svn/squeezeslave/trunk/squeezeslave Known Bugs Playing an ogg or mp3 file with a duration of less than 30 seconds as the first track after starting squeezeslave prevents switching to the next track in the playlist. Changing playlist after pausing causes the playback of a short piece of the previously playing song at pause before the new playlist begins. Pandora doesn't work using the default hardware device/MAC address 00:00:00:00:00:01. You need to start squeezeslave using the -m00:04:20:00:00:01 command line option to set the MAC address to the slimdevices hardware range. The last three octets (00:00:01) may need to be increased depending on the range Pandora is checking for. Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?
Well going down the video route while it seems like a great natural progression, in practice it seems to water down and degrade the product. Too many apps try to be the end all be all and end up doing nothing well. You say SqueezeCenter is too complex now, add video to that mix and you make it 10x worse. I agree with you that SC is too much for a non-techie, I do NOT agree with your resource hog statements. The only resource intense part of SC is when it does a media scan and you really can not make that much nicer, any media app that actually scans and updates will have this (iTunes does not and is one of my many complaints with it). Squeezebox can not act as an Airport Express for iTunes because APPLE will not allow it. Winamp plugin while I personally would not want to use it could be decent idea. Nothing stopping you from making one :). The heart of SC is that it is open source, and the players API is well documented so anyone could make a plugin for Winamp. Not really sure what your question "how about OS drivers that can handle the TCP/IP bit?" means? TCP/IP is already handled by every modern OS. -- m1abrams m1abrams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=850 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63775 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server
Hi, having quickly scanned the discussion so far, I have not been able to find any answers to my questions, so here you go. I installed SC 7.3.2 on my Home Server because the download page did not point me at the Home Server version, but I understand that that should not make a big difference. The first problem I had was with the port. My Home Server was running Twonky, so SqueezeCenter started up on port 9010, but the windows firewall exception for SC was on port 9000, so I had to change that. As somebody mentioned above, I thought it was a good idea to create a new user to run the SC service under. I gave it access to the music share and everything looked fine. But there appear to be exceptions. My log file is full of entries of the following kind: Code: [09-06-01 13:38:12.2240] Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::PrefSync::_syncDown_error (359) Sync Down failed: Connect timed out: Bad file descriptor, will retry in 578697 [09-06-01 13:59:07.6116] Slim::Web::JSONRPC::requestMethod (383) request not dispatchable! Will run as a process! Sometimes, the extension downloader complains about bad file descriptors, too. The worst problem is that the user apparently has no permission to hibernate the server. I have installed ServerPowerControl and from the log entries, it appears to be working fine. Only the server does not hibernate when it is told to. I can make it hibernate by configuring a timeout in the energy control options, but the effects are hard to predict. Sometimes, it seems to obey the SPC commands while at other times, it looks as if the server waits for the configured timeout after it has received the hibernate command from SPC. Yesterday, I switched the daily library rescan on. After that, the server could no longer be hibernated at all. Even if I pushed the hibernate button, it would only hibernate for a few seconds and then come back up again. It is quite a nightmare because it is difficult to tell what is happening for which reason. Regarding Lights Out: ServerPowerControl lets you define commands that are issued on startup, when all players have been idle for a specific period of time or when hibernation is requested from the SqueezeboxController. It would be easy to configure commands which register and de-register a client with Lights Out if there was a command line interface. I think this is the way to go forward. -- mvordeme 'last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/mvordeme) | scaleo home server 2105 | squeezecenter 7.3.2 | server power control 7.3 | squeezebox boom & duet | rotel rsp-1066 | rotel rmb-100 | phonar p-5 mvordeme's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59433 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Especially the web server IS a resource hog. Plus it's slow as hell, I believe SC would be better off if that got removed and replaced by a standalone web server like lighttpd. Also the use of MySQL is not really efficient. That said: All of these issues are being worked, AFAIK, there's a "noweb" option for SC 7.4 plus SQLite support. For some issues, claiming SC to be a resource hog is NOT fair. For example when it's transcoding and things like that. Requiring more ressources than other servers when using features those other servers don't even have is BS. A lot of the resource requirements of SC stem from stuff like that. > > Squeezebox can not act as an Airport Express for iTunes because APPLE > will not allow it. > Apple allowed it for others.I suspect those became poor over the agreement, though... -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63775 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?
i think my one response here basically will address everyone who commented since me, and that is to say that IF slim wants to reach a more mass audience, i think they need to look at other paradigms. its somewhat obvious and goes without saying that the reason some or most of the things i suggested don't exist are b/c no one has written them. the point i was trying to make is that maybe slim should try one. afterall if the point is an "easy" product, then people capable of writing such code would not be a the target consumer, so they'd have no incentive to, (they'd be happy with SC), thus it falls on logitech/slim to do it, if they want to reach the masses. consider that "the masses" want simple and familiar. well, itunes is that, and winamp is basically that, just not as much so. (i think u can do a plugin for WMP, but i don't know how capable it is) consider that "the masses" don't want or need almost ALL of what SC can do, nor do they want to learn it, nor do they want to adjust their tags, data, etc, to get it to work right, nor do they want to wait an hour for a scan to finish, or figure out which scan they need to use. your average user just wants to power the hardware with something fun and easy to use, that they are familar with. so a two pronged approach then, SC for the tech geeks, of which i am one, and SOMETHING, like a plugin for winamp, to make slim hardware available to the masses. i think it then falls to logitech to provide some kind of solution along these lines, and see if it does help to reach the masses. personally, i know many people who are audiophiles but computers passed them by. give them a simple way to power a SB, and they buy. give them SC, and they pass. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbr (parent's home) - w/sc 7.3.3b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63775 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Question about file types
That's telling you about the file, not the stream. "AAC or movie file" is the generic name in SC for all AAC/ALAC/mp4 etc files, and that bitrate sounds about right for a lossless file (about 50% of uncompressed which is 1411kbps). In reality however, the data is being transcoded to FLAC as your SBR can't play ALAC itself, but it's all lossless so don't worry about it. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64023 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?
Interesting thoughts, Mr Sinatra. In thinking about it, perhaps the SB family is not a mass market thing. Look at how many people are happy with ipod docking stations with amps and speakers, whatever those are called. THAT'S a mass market type of product. The audiophiles I know (who have spent big bucks on equipment) would have nothing to do with digital files coming from a PC. Maybe that's a function of the ones I know. What's left - geeks looking for a toy, and music enthusiasts looking for convenience and yes, perhaps a toy, but in a different way than the geeks. The geeks, who are WAY overrepresented in these forums, are not numerous enough to support a product line. What's left for outreach is non-technical music fans. For them, the products need to be easier to use, better explained, less troublesome, and less geeky (it's a turnoff). Simple task ahead for the marketing people to figure out how to do that. As for filling the departed shoes, I'm sure the company has plenty of talent left to handle things. The problem occurs because the Intel Atom processor supports SpeedStep technology. The problem is solved by simply disable the SpeedStep technology. Softsqueeze is now community supported which means users have to try to help themselves. I don't have a Mac but if 3.7 worked on previous version of OSX then it would seem to be a Java issue rather than a Softsqueeze one. The Java version you mentioned in another post is not the latest version as used on Linux/Windows (1.6 update 13). Is 1.6 not available on OSX ? Have you tried running Softsqueeze from a command line (i.e. java -jar SoftSqueeze.jar) rather than using jnlp as that would help narrows down the problem area. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I successfully use, at different times, SoftSqueeze, SqueezePlay and SqueezeSlave on my Mac running latest updated OS X. I think there was a hoop I had to jump through for SoftSqueeze regarding which version of java I was running, and I recall this being resolved by somewhere in the MAC OS specifying which version was to take precedence as I had more than one java installed.
