[slim] Synology NAS / X10 interconnect

2009-06-01 Thread fabads

Hello,

I am regarding to use X10 protocol to switch on/off my amps from my SBC
(duet). I saw some topics about Firecracker but this small RF
transmitter/receptor needs a serial port.

My Squeezecenter is installed on a Synology NAS (DS-207+) which is not
equipped with serial port ?

Is there any solution to interconnect NAS and X10 with Squeezecenter ?

Thanks.

Fabrice

[slim] Compilations not working

2009-06-01 Thread iSam

Hi

I have searched for answers to this, so apologies if it has been
covered already.

I am running Squeezecenter on Mac OS10.5.7 indexing my iTunes library.
I cannot for the life of me get compilations to appear in the same
album. Instead, I am getting multiple instances of the album name, each
with only one song.

When I noticed this, I went back and realised that iTunes was also not
capturing the fact that it was a compilation, so I turned that on (it
now works fine) and did a complete library rescan. I am still having no
luck.

I'd sure appreciate any assistance that others can offer.

Thanks

Sam

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-06-01 Thread MrSinatra

interesting discussion.

my view hasn't changed from when i first got my SB.

essentially, i love the hardware and the audio quality, and i think the
SBC concept, or pippins apps, are great as well.

but the software, despite its many strengths and bells and whistles, is
just fatally flawed. it is complex, it is not user friendly, it is a
resource hog, it isn't fast, it isn't fun, it isn't intuitive, it isn't
well documented... i could go on.

i look at a product like tivo, and i see a product designed for the
masses that can still do very complex things. i only see the second
half of that when i look at SC.

i still don't understand why there isn't an "all in the one box"
solution available for example, or why optionally including video (on
some new product) is so taboo, (meaning on screen HUD as well as video
streaming).

why can't winamp power the hardware via a plugin? why can't itunes
treat a SB as if it were an airport express? just giving customers
funner software like winamp to power the device would really deliver it
to the masses!

how about OS drivers that can handle the TCP/IP bit?

i'm not saying all or any of these ideas is the right idea, but i am
saying that IF the idea is to deliver slim stuff to the masses,
something has to give.

But it can be - as far as player responsiveness is concerned. The
communication between cotroller and server is based on plain network
protocols. So any differences in snappyness between controller and (e.g)
SlimControll can potentially be eliminated.

[slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-06-01 Thread ralphy

Squeezeslave 0.9 is now available at

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105169&package_id=176494

What's new in Squeezeslave 0.9

Replay gain now supported with Squeezecenter v7.4 r26720 or later.
Positive dB replay gain values are ignored to prevent clipping. Patches
are included for squeezecenter 7.3.3 and 7.2.2 running on linux/solaris.
Enabling replay gain for a squeezeslave player without the appropriate
patch applied to squeezecenter is not recommended or supported.

Slimp3 style display and keyboard support for linux with Squeezecenter
v7.4 r26720 or later. Support for External LCD displays and IR remotes
are provided using LCDd and lirc respectively (linux only). A .lircrc
config file for the slimdevices remote is included. See --help for
details. Patches are included for squeezecenter 7.3.3 and 7.2.2 running
on linux/solaris.

Thanks to Adrian Smith for getting the display and replay gain changes
into Squeezecenter 7.4.

Stream position reporting no longer resets to zero after a
pause/unpause.

--oldplayer/-O option has been removed as the latest versions of
Squeezecenter's softsqueeze playertype fails to advance to the next
track in the playlist. The --playerid/-e option can be used to force
squeezeslave to connect using the softsqueeze player type if needed.

--debuglog/-Y option added to send all message to the given filename
instead of the current display. Useful when running squeezeslave in
interactive (display) mode to keep any error messages from corrupting
the display output.

Source code has been moved to Google Code. It will no longer be
available as a tarball.

You can browse the source 'here'
or download it with subversion.

svn checkout
http://squeezeslave.googlecode.com/svn/squeezeslave/trunk/squeezeslave

Known Bugs

Playing an ogg or mp3 file with a duration of less than 30 seconds as
the first track after starting squeezeslave prevents switching to the
next track in the playlist.

Changing playlist after pausing causes the playback of a short piece of
the previously playing song at pause before the new playlist begins.

Pandora doesn't work using the default hardware device/MAC address
00:00:00:00:00:01. You need to start squeezeslave using the
-m00:04:20:00:00:01 command line option to set the MAC address to the
slimdevices hardware range. The last three octets (00:00:01) may need to
be increased depending on the range Pandora is checking for. Pandora is
not available in my area to test the minimum range required.

That setting is irrelevant - it defines whether compilation album
artists will also appear in the Browse Artists list.

I'm guessing that the problem could be one of two things:

1. the way the music library is scanned - perhaps if iSam is using the
iTunes import method, it doesn't get the compilation or album artist
information? Could try pointing SC music library at the music source
folder and disabling iTunes plugin.

2. That a full scan is required, if iSam has only recently added the
"part of a compilation" indicator in iTunes.

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-06-01 Thread m1abrams

Well going down the video route while it seems like a great natural
progression, in practice it seems to water down and degrade the product.
Too many apps try to be the end all be all and end up doing nothing
well. You say SqueezeCenter is too complex now, add video to that mix
and you make it 10x worse.

I agree with you that SC is too much for a non-techie, I do NOT agree
with your resource hog statements. The only resource intense part of SC
is when it does a media scan and you really can not make that much
nicer, any media app that actually scans and updates will have this
(iTunes does not and is one of my many complaints with it).

Squeezebox can not act as an Airport Express for iTunes because APPLE
will not allow it.

Winamp plugin while I personally would not want to use it could be
decent idea. Nothing stopping you from making one :). The heart of SC
is that it is open source, and the players API is well documented so
anyone could make a plugin for Winamp.

Not really sure what your question "how about OS drivers that can
handle the TCP/IP bit?" means? TCP/IP is already handled by every
modern OS.

Correct. Though without a Controller you need to use a separate utility
to setup the Receiver. The Boom or Classic are easier in this respect as
all the setup is done via their screen and buttons.

Also, it doesn't need to be an iPhone, an iPod Touch will work just as
well. I'd highly recommend the iPeng app, it I run it on my iPhone and
it gets far more use than my Controller does.

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

Hi,

having quickly scanned the discussion so far, I have not been able to
find any answers to my questions, so here you go. I installed SC 7.3.2
on my Home Server because the download page did not point me at the Home
Server version, but I understand that that should not make a big
difference.

The first problem I had was with the port. My Home Server was running
Twonky, so SqueezeCenter started up on port 9010, but the windows
firewall exception for SC was on port 9000, so I had to change that.

As somebody mentioned above, I thought it was a good idea to create a
new user to run the SC service under. I gave it access to the music
share and everything looked fine. But there appear to be exceptions. My
log file is full of entries of the following kind:
Code:

[09-06-01 13:38:12.2240]
Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::PrefSync::_syncDown_error (359) Sync Down
failed: Connect timed out: Bad file descriptor, will retry in 578697
  [09-06-01 13:59:07.6116] Slim::Web::JSONRPC::requestMethod (383) request not
dispatchable!
  [09-06-01 14:03:57.0326]
Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::Players::_players_error (146) Unable to get
players from SN: Connect timed out: Bad file descriptor, retrying in 300 seconds
  [09-06-01 15:08:07.7502] Slim::Utils::MySQLHelper::startServer (282) Warning:
Couldn't install MySQL as a service! Will run as a process!

Sometimes, the extension downloader complains about bad file
descriptors, too.

The worst problem is that the user apparently has no permission to
hibernate the server. I have installed
ServerPowerControl and from the log entries, it
appears to be working fine. Only the server does not hibernate when it
is told to. I can make it hibernate by configuring a timeout in the
energy control options, but the effects are hard to predict. Sometimes,
it seems to obey the SPC commands while at other times, it looks as if
the server waits for the configured timeout after it has received the
hibernate command from SPC. Yesterday, I switched the daily library
rescan on. After that, the server could no longer be hibernated at all.
Even if I pushed the hibernate button, it would only hibernate for a few
seconds and then come back up again. It is quite a nightmare because it
is difficult to tell what is happening for which reason.

Regarding Lights Out: ServerPowerControl lets you define commands that
are issued on startup, when all players have been idle for a specific
period of time or when hibernation is requested from the
SqueezeboxController. It would be easy to configure commands which
register and de-register a client with Lights Out if there was a command
line interface. I think this is the way to go forward.

I disagree. Especially the web server IS a resource hog. Plus it's slow
as hell, I believe SC would be better off if that got removed and
replaced by a standalone web server like lighttpd. Also the use of MySQL
is not really efficient.

That said: All of these issues are being worked, AFAIK, there's a
"noweb" option for SC 7.4 plus SQLite support.

For some issues, claiming SC to be a resource hog is NOT fair. For
example when it's transcoding and things like that. Requiring more
ressources than other servers when using features those other servers
don't even have is BS. A lot of the resource requirements of SC stem
from stuff like that.

not yet very well thought through. I had not anticipated the multitude

Yes, you wouldn't need a controller (duet is receiver and controller)
as you could use your iPhone. Personally, I would chose a SqueezeBox
Classic over the receiver though as it has a display. The boom has
speakers built-in so you wouldn't need seperate speakers for the kitchen
- i'm assuming the boom would be for the kitchen

I assume that Mr Sinatra was refering to driver that let Squeeze

Again this is just because someone hasn't written one. The fact that
the core developers haven't done it shows that isn't the direction they
want the product to go in. And thats fair rneough, nothing stopping

[slim] New Controller on horizon?

2009-06-01 Thread parkmad

I have been contemplating a purchase of a controller as well as a
transporter and I noticed that at Crutchfield, they are having a special
for a free controller with a purchase of a transporter.

Sometimes, companies are just reducing their inventory of either
product or providing a way to make more money on the higher dollar
product with incentive for another product. It may work in my case.

However, sometimes inventory is cleared before something new is
released.

Any information? Not that product announcements happen in forums. :)

[slim] Question about file types

2009-06-01 Thread daseman

Hello. I am using a SB Duet, streaming Apple Lossless files wirelessly.
When a song is playing and I click the "more info" button on the
controller, however, it tells me that the file type is "AAC or movie
file." It also tells me that the kpbs has been converted to 705.6.

I want to make sure that I am streaming with as much fidelity as
possible. Is there some setting I must change to make sure I am
streaming ALAC files, and at maximum resolution? Or am I already doing
that?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Are your songs stored in ALAC format?

I was having the same problem with my ALAC based music library (on a
QNAP NAS, though). I did not find a solution until I changed my library
content to FLAC (for another reason). For me it looked like SC did not
support the "Album Artist" or "Compilation" attributes of the ALAC
format.

teleporting you to the space and time of the original recording! Avoid

But I'm too sleepy to do them up fully, complete with photoshopped

I think the best clue on product line changes is to see when SD changes
prices in their store: SB2's dropped price just before the SB3 came out,
for example.

Of course, that's still pretty bogus: since the SB3 didn't drop for
Boom or Duet or Transporter...

So...

I guess there is no clue at all.

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-06-01 Thread MrSinatra

i think my one response here basically will address everyone who
commented since me, and that is to say that IF slim wants to reach a
more mass audience, i think they need to look at other paradigms.

its somewhat obvious and goes without saying that the reason some or
most of the things i suggested don't exist are b/c no one has written
them. the point i was trying to make is that maybe slim should try one.
afterall if the point is an "easy" product, then people capable of
writing such code would not be a the target consumer, so they'd have no
incentive to, (they'd be happy with SC), thus it falls on logitech/slim
to do it, if they want to reach the masses.

consider that "the masses" want simple and familiar. well, itunes is
that, and winamp is basically that, just not as much so. (i think u can
do a plugin for WMP, but i don't know how capable it is)

consider that "the masses" don't want or need almost ALL of what SC can
do, nor do they want to learn it, nor do they want to adjust their tags,
data, etc, to get it to work right, nor do they want to wait an hour for
a scan to finish, or figure out which scan they need to use.

your average user just wants to power the hardware with something fun
and easy to use, that they are familar with.

so a two pronged approach then, SC for the tech geeks, of which i am
one, and SOMETHING, like a plugin for winamp, to make slim hardware
available to the masses.

i think it then falls to logitech to provide some kind of solution
along these lines, and see if it does help to reach the masses.
personally, i know many people who are audiophiles but computers passed
them by. give them a simple way to power a SB, and they buy. give them
SC, and they pass.

Re: [slim] Question about file types

2009-06-01 Thread radish

That's telling you about the file, not the stream. "AAC or movie file"
is the generic name in SC for all AAC/ALAC/mp4 etc files, and that
bitrate sounds about right for a lossless file (about 50% of
uncompressed which is 1411kbps).

In reality however, the data is being transcoded to FLAC as your SBR
can't play ALAC itself, but it's all lossless so don't worry about it.

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-06-01 Thread Goodsounds

Interesting thoughts, Mr Sinatra.

In thinking about it, perhaps the SB family is not a mass market thing.
Look at how many people are happy with ipod docking stations with amps
and speakers, whatever those are called. THAT'S a mass market type of
product.

The audiophiles I know (who have spent big bucks on equipment) would
have nothing to do with digital files coming from a PC. Maybe that's a
function of the ones I know.

What's left - geeks looking for a toy, and music enthusiasts looking
for convenience and yes, perhaps a toy, but in a different way than the
geeks. The geeks, who are WAY overrepresented in these forums, are not
numerous enough to support a product line. What's left for outreach is
non-technical music fans.

For them, the products need to be easier to use, better explained, less
troublesome, and less geeky (it's a turnoff). Simple task ahead for the
marketing people to figure out how to do that.

As for filling the departed shoes, I'm sure the company has plenty of
talent left to handle things. If not, bigger problems are ahead.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox3 slow response

2009-06-01 Thread Tue

The problem occurs because the Intel Atom processor supports SpeedStep
technology.

The problem is solved by simply disable the SpeedStep technology. This
can be done in the BIOS or by selecting "Control Panel" > "Power
Options" > Select the Power Scheme "Always On".

The reason it works perfectly in Ubuntu is that SpeedStep is only
supported by Windows systems.

Softsqueeze is now community supported which means users have to try to
help themselves.

I don't have a Mac but if 3.7 worked on previous version of OSX then it
would seem to be a Java issue rather than a Softsqueeze one.

The Java version you mentioned in another post is not the latest
version as used on Linux/Windows (1.6 update 13). Is 1.6 not available
on OSX ?

Have you tried running Softsqueeze from a command line (i.e. java -jar

the problem area.

Not that I'm aware of. It might make a nice enhancement request to SC
so one can identify and associate such temporary inputs (USB, memory
card reader, etc..) to be a "look here on scan, but if you find nothing
then skip it and move on" type feature. :)

I successfully use, at different times, SoftSqueeze, SqueezePlay and

hoop I had to jump through for SoftSqueeze regarding which version of

than one java installed. Can't remember the details at this point
however. although I think the tip came from this forum so should be

His problem was clearly stated - compilation albums being split up into albums
of the same name - one per artist.

That means that the compilation tag was being picked up as 0, and without an
Album Artist tag, it looks like there are many regular albums that share the
same name.

Could potentially be related to iTunes organising songs into a strict
/artist/album/songs folder hierarchy too, so without a Compilation tag, it
would use folder structure to assume songs were part of different albums.

ok... so when he was in the artist list, he drilled down to each comp
artist, and saw the same album under each artist on the comp.

or, if he went into albums, and ordered them by artists, same thing.

no? i just don't see how you're so sure... i'm not saying that option
IS the fix or that you're wrong, just that it may be depending on what
he means, and his data.

i could be all wet, i don't mess with that option, i always have it set
to group comps, but it shouldn't matter to me b/c i also have AA on
everything.

yes, its confusing b/c i don't know how itunes normally does things, or
if his data is normal for itunes. would a full clear and rescan even
apply if he uses itunes integration?

i also wonder if he mostly has AA tags or not. itunes def uses them
and edits them, and i am pretty sure gets them from its online DB, but
not positive on that.

yep, SC still hasn't gotten totally away from folder location, (related
to the G.Hits logic i believe)

Re: [slim] Win 7 and Play To Feature

2009-06-01 Thread agentsmith

I use a nice music/tag organization software called OrangeCD, and use
its "Play to SqueezeCenter" feature all the time. I am no computer
expert, but I think it makes use of the SqueezeCenter's CLI feature?

I use the GUI interface of OrangeCD to organize and search my music,
and never bother with rescanning the SqueezeCenter ever.

Re: [slim] Synology NAS / X10 interconnect

You should be able to use a USB-to-serial adapter, ala
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?p=62553&sid=fda53e34bbdb06f7d6870257bf075ca8

In brief:
- connect the serial adapter
- do whatever is needed (as above) to get a /dev/ttyUSB0 device
- do what's needed to make /dev/ttyUSB0 usable by the SqueezeCenter
user on the DS
- compile the 'br' app for the DS (source code is included with the
PowerCenter plugin)
- configure PowerCenter to use /dev/ttyUSB0 and the 'br' utility you
compiled

In the Synology forum post, they're using a serial adapter based on the
FTDI chipset. That seems the best choice if you think you might want two
serial ports, and it costs about $20-$30 USD. You can get an adapter
based on the Prolific 2303 chipset for about $10-$15, but those don't
have unique serial numbers, so you can't use more than one on the same
system very well (pretty much random which ttyUSBx device would be
assigned to each adapter; with FTDI-based adapters you can configure
Linux to name them reliably). You'd only need one, though, for
Firecracker/x10 (and many other serial devices work when plugged in to
the firecracker -- on my main system I have an Insteon serial controller
plugged into the Firecracker and both work fine).

Make sense?

Re: [slim] How do I get album art to match the album

2009-06-01 Thread dwstraile

Awesome! I think the full clear and rescan and clearing the cache
solved my problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks guys.
