Re: [slim] SB far too expensive?
O dear. Such passion. I ask the question in a fairly disinterested sort of way. It is surely worth asking. For my part I like my SB3 very much and listen to it all the time. With an external DAC it betters my Quad FM tuner and streamed FLAC betters my Quad 77 CD Player. I listen mostly to hi bit classical music radio streams, and to BBC Radio 4. I do not object to the price I paid for my SB3, and yes, I have had my money's worth. I simply observe that a small cheap PC will do more for less. Others have observed there are other hardware solutions to music streaming, and very soon media streaming boxes that handle video as well as audio formats will be cheaper than an SB3. It may be that they will not manage audio as elegantly or as well. The SB3 internal DAC is better than some, but not good enough for me; but I appreciate the difference in production cost between including it or not will be very small. Half a duet would do me as I hardly ever look at the SB3 screen, and I usually tap the keys of the laptop on the coffee table in front of me rather than try and find the remote. I bought the SB3 after quite a lot of personal research. I bought it to sidestep the re-sampling/bit-perfect issues of Windows hardware; I bought it because it was a silent box; and I bought it because of the (mostly) open source software that I could see would develop in response to a myriad of different needs. Was it worth the cost to me? Most certainly, yes. Does it still cost too much? Probably, looking at what other boxes do and contain. And yet the quality of construction is far better than many cheap boxes. [slim] SB3 suddenly dropping off wired network :(
Hi all, After about a year of no problems with our Squeezebox 3 (it's one of the last Slim Devices branded units), it has stopped playing in the middle of a song and disappeared from the network twice, and I can't get it back today :( It's on a wired network, running from Squeezecenter (7.3.2) on a local PC, the Squeezebox has a static IP address, and has been playing mostly local FLAC files and sometimes internet radio stations with no problems. The other day, when the SB3 quit playing, pressing the power button on the remote made it say it was waking up squeezecenter ... connecting to squeezecenter ... unable to connect to squeezecenter, and retrying multiple times didn't fix it. Next we tried stopping and starting squeezecenter on the host PC and power cycling the SB3, which got it back and playable again, but today, no dice. After the music suddenly stopped today, I tried restarting squeezecenter and the SB3 to no avail, so I did more troubleshooting, but with no change so far: - dust-off blast in the network port on the SB3 - different network cable - different switch port - connecting directly to the router (running DD-WRT 2.3 SP2) instead of the gigabit switch (linksys EG008W ver. 3) everything else is also connected through - DHCP instead of static IP address (unable to find DHCP server error message quickly or unable to obtain IP address error after the 30 second timeout) - pinging the static IP address of the SB3 from a PC on the network (no reply) - hardware reset from the menu (no change, other than after reconfiguring, it didn't know about our squeezecenter server, so I had to attempt to connect by it's IP address, to no avail) - connect to squeezenetwork (unable to find an address for squeezenetwork) On the router and switch I'm connecting to, the network lights for the port I have the SB3 connected to are always on correctly, and when I disconnect the cables, the SB3 complains about the Ethernet cable not being connected. When connected, the SB3 can't see anything on the network anymore, and nothing on the network can see it anymore. No changes have been made to the network for a while, the last was adding the gigabit switch a few months ago. Other items on the network are Windows and Linux PCs and a Popcorn Hour A-100 networked media streamer (no, even though it plays FLAC files, it is definitely not a substitute for a squeezebox. It's great for video though, but I digress.) I'm beginning to think the network port or chip on the SB3 has become flaky or partly died :( Is a bad/flaky network port a known hardware failure on the SB3? Can anyone think of anything else to try? Why? You have to be kidding. The SB3 that I bought almost 2 years ago is one of the things that I really think was too cheap (the price) compared to the enjoyment I've gotten from it. It's been wonderful and beyond that a lot of fun for me and my family. Now that I've used it I would have paid a lot more for it. I guess you either get it or you don't. We love it and it's expanded my music appreciation considerably allowing us to explore our music so much more than before. Why? The VFD found in most SBs is expensive. The OEM price is probably close to $100US. And, you could raise a holy war here if you want to talk about the D/A converter used in SB vs. other D/A converters. I suspect the raw materials for the basic SB to be around $150. Roughly speaking, the price of a product should be about twice the raw materials. So $300 is about right. If you still think the price is too high, the server code and protocol used is open to the public. That is, there is enough information on the web to build your own client. Many have. I have suspected the cheapest possible client would be certain types of routers with a USB port and a cheap USB to stereo dongle. Some routers can be re-purposed (hacked) for internet radio: > http://hackaday.com/2008/12/19/wifi-streaming-radio/ ...it should not be very difficult to add a squeeze center client to such a project. This approach, cost wise, should not exceed $150. Actually, if you are frugal, the router should not be more than $50 and the stereo dongle not more than $15. Do not forget this is a hack and you will probably have to crack open the router and flash it with OpenWrt software. And, at this price, there is no local display, no local IR receiver and no remote control. But that does not mean you can't hack them in as well! ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

As mentioned, I am using the net-UDAP tool to adjust all settings on the SBR. Both the computer and the SBR have to be hard-wired to the router in order to use this tool. So I checked the IP address of my computer when it was wirelessly connected and then start Squeezecenter and verify on the information settings screen that it is using that IP address as the server IP address. Then I plug both components in and use the tool to configure the server IP address on the SBR to match the wireless IP address of the computer. But when I reset the SBR, it still can't find the music source (SC on the computer). Labarum;429906 Wrote: > The small form PC has more electronics in it, yet costs less. Why? More electronics? Do you mean a greater number of components? One individual component (a top-end CPU for example) could easily cost more than that whole PC, so the amount of 'electronics' is not a measure of anything. Personally, I think the Squeezebox is very well priced. If you look at HiFi equipment in general, good quality components have no real price ceiling. Some interconnects can cost more than a Squeezebox. Just because a device appears to do 'more' it doesn't necessarily do anything 'better'. Would you question the price of a high-performance sports car if you found a cheaper car that had electric windows and air-conditioning, if the high-performance car lacked those features? I use a cheap PC (built from scraps) for my SqueezeCenter server, and I thought I may as well make use of it as another music zone (using SqueezeSlave) since it's got sound output (the motherboard built-in sound device) and has to be switched on anyway, and using another device such as a Squeezebox Receiver is just a waste or electricity. When I played music on it, I realised how horible it sounded compared to my SB3. Sure the manufacturer managed to add sound to the board using very cheap electronics, but it's no use for anything much other than system beeps. When you're talking about using digital audio outputs (as I do on one of my SB3s), the argument changes slightly, since I wouldn't think that you're going to get anything different out of the SFF PC than an SB receiver, but then you're simply not using half the device you've bought (the DAC). Then again, the receiver is only £85. Comparing it to the SB3 (or Classic as it's now known), the SFF PC has no display (those displays are not cheap you know, and I think they're excellent) and no IR remote interface. -- rickwookie rickwookie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64207 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Cira, I suggest you look at the Sample Usage page: https://projects.robinbowes.com/Net-UDAP/trac/wiki/SampleUsage To find the adddress of your squeezecenter: goto the web interface Click "settings" (bottom right) Click the "Information" tab Server IP Address is the third line down. If you have DHCP on your wired network, something like this should work: discover conf 1 set interface=1 lan_ip_mode=1 squeezecenter_address=a.b.c.d save_data reset where a.b.c.d is the Server IP Address you looked up earlier. Re: [slim] Can BOTH computer and SB be connected wirelessly?
Yes, both the computer and the SB can be connected wirelessly. As you are aware, you could run into throughput issues with a "double-hop", but it can be done. Have you gone through the setup procedure for the SBR again? I know that if you do things the other way (ie, starting out with the SBR wireless and then choosing a wired connection instead) you need to re-do the configuration from the beginning. Just sticking the ethernet cable in the SBR doesn't make it switch over to wired. I don't know for certain, but it's possible that the same is true in reverse: the SBR might not kick over to wireless by just pulling out the ethernet cable. Worth a try. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64200 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Comparison between iPeng and Controller?
I have iPeng on an iPod Touch. I have never tried the Logitech Controller. I like iPeng. Does a great job of browsing through music services on Squeezenetwork. I can easily discover much more music this way than using the Squeezebox remote. The iPod Touch has become my main "computer" for email, web browsing, etc. It is so convenient to use anywhere in the house on the wireless network. I don't think Logitech is suffering from the use of iPeng. Just the opposite. iPeng's added functionality for the Squeezebox I assume incentivizes more sales of Squeezeboxes. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64145 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Can BOTH computer and SB be connected wirelessly?
In my old place, I had my computer connected via ethernet cable to my router and my squeezebox connected wirelessly. It is a standalone receiver that I configured with the net-UDAP tool but mostly didn't give me any problems. In my new place, the jacks for the modem are far away from anywhere I want to set up my computer and I am trying to avoid running cables across the room. I assumed that I would just be able to update the IP address on my receiver to the IP assigned to my wirelessly-connected computer. But so far, nothing but that old blue light. Just to check everything, I did stretch wires across the room so my computer could be hard-wired to my router again and sure enough, that method still works as well as it ever did. Is having both the computer and receiver connected wirelessly possible? I understand there could be some data throughput issues with making two hops like this. But shouldn't the receiver at least be able to connect to squeezecenter on the wirelessly connected computer? Thanks for any and all advice. -- kowloonside kowloonside's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23798 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64200 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool
I, too, was "tricked" into buying a classic which i assumed (based on what I read) would be expandable via receivers. I now am in the situation where I have a working classic and a receiver that I can do nothing with. I'm attempting to use the UDAP tool as well as the .exe Peter compiled, but I'm stuck at one point "Type set server_address=192.168.1.50 squeezecenter_address=192.168.1.50 wireless_SSID=3Com wireless_wep_key_0=abcde wireless_wep_on=1 ◦(substitute the correct wireless values for your network, and the correct IP address of your Squeezecenter) " I have no need to go wireless since I have ethernet in my room. How do i tell it to look for the wired connection? Beyond that how do you find the IP of your squeeze center? thanks for any help! -- cira cira's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57861 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore
I recently updated my server to SC-7.4-26890-whs.msi. With this build, iPeng 1.1.2 is essentially non-functional. Crashes and closes down with almost any operation. My previous SC install, SC-7.4-25661-whs.msi, worked beautifully with 1.1.2. Is this likely to be fixed soon? I will be reverting to my older SC build until then, as I am completely addicted to iPeng. I would feel remiss if I did not add my thanks. We have been squeezeboxed, not just the quantity of gear we have purchased, but how it constantly plays a role in our lives, from waking to alarms of streaming news from around the world, to falling asleep to favorite classics. Thanks to Sean, but also to his idea of building this open community, which I hope, exceeded his expectations. [slim] How to un-link alarms
I originally had a Squeezebox Duet paired with SqueezeCenter running on Windows Home Server. I recently added a SqueezeBox Boom to replace my old clock radio. It's wonderful! My problem: When the Boom's alarm times out, it also turns off my Duet. If I set a different alarm to turn the Duet back on, it also turns on my Boom. How do I un-link the alarms? I have to synchronize the two with audio delay or I get a nasty echo. I do have the "Synchronize Power" set to "Power On/Off Separately" (see attached Pic), but apparently alarms don't count. [slim] Making SqueezePlay more "portable"?
Hi. I have just begun using SqueezePlay for both Linux and Windows, and I fint it very useful and handy compared to xmms and winamp. I'm requesting the possibility to copy both the linux and the windows version of SqueezePlay on to a memory stick, and run it from there. Making it 100% portable. Problem is, the SP configuration files are stored in the users "settings directory": %APPDATA%\SqueezePlay - typically C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\SqueezePlay and for linux: /.squeezeplay I would very much like to store these files in the SqueezePlayer's own software directory. On the memory stick. Do any of you know if this is even possible? -- staalelor staalelor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6632 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64182 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] I am leaving Logitech!
My turn ... I bought my first SB2 in April 2005, followed almost immediately by a second one. I now have numerous assorted Slim Devices around the house, and a comprehensive media server sitting behind them. I've bought a lot of gadgets over the years: most of them have worked, and some have made a significant impact on how I do something. But I think I can honestly say that the Squeezeboxen - and the community that has emerged around them - have made a far bigger impact than anything else. Music is now everywhere in the house, all sorts of music available anytime we want it. Right now I'm listening to some great music I would probably never have heard if I hadn't ripped my son's CD for him. That kind of impact comes from a radical vision, excellently executed. That combination doesn't happen very often.
