the bad thing here is, that most people only complain about the product.
for a new squeezebox user this might be frightening.

so btw. I am a happy customer... ;-) (even with the controller and I

Sorry to see you go. I had figured that the senior Slim team would be
departing when the earn-out came to an end. Congratulations to both you

Just one question, with you and Sean gone - who is going to fix the

OK - wanted to give you some updates on my experience.

The Sonos hardware is really pretty solid - well made, and works well.

However - NOT bulletproof. I have had some issues occasionally with
dropouts and wireless signal strength.

While the call in Support has been pretty good, I'm sorely disappointed
with their forums - there is NOTHING like the level of interaction
present here, either in terms of user input or vendor involvement and
feedback. These forums are really amazing compared to what I'm
experiencing over there.

I'll continue to check in from time to time to share my experience.

Things break, nothing lasts forever. These products are electronic, not
stone. The two year period is generous and unusually long for products
like this. Most electronic products have a much shorter manufacturers
warranty than is provided for the Squeeze line.

Electronics manufacturers are in the business of making and selling
products, not selling insurance policies. Assuming that a warranty
period will never be "forever", what do you think would be reasonable?

If you want a longer warranty period, most retailers are more than
happy to sell supplementary coverage. At least that is true in the US, I
don't know where you are. But conventional wisdom is that purchasing
such supplemental coverage is, on average, not worth it. (Except when it
is, of course)

dwc,

If your wireless card is bad read the thread in the DIY forum
concerning converting a wired version to wireless; since this is my
first post I am not allowed that privilege by forum rules. I will try
another post with the link.

I found that the card can be found on eBay under Dell Inspiron 300M,
510M, 4000 or 5100. They go for about $15. Watch out for newer "N"
cards, Broadcom chipsets and the card must be mini pci and not pci-e.

Good luck,

Eeyore

Logitech/Slim Devices most certainly stand behind Squeezebox Products!
The current warranty coverage is Two Years Parts and Labor Warranty on
the SB3. And I believe a flat rate charge of $90 to fix a broken unit
out of warranty.

Now I think that is more then fair and in no way "locks you into buying
a new product" if there is a failure. Most companies give you 90 days on
electronics if you're lucky.

On the other hand this is a specialized product, unlike a notebook
which must be able to work with every bit of windows software the world
can throw at it. The screen is much larger as well which is where a
chunk of the cost comes from, and internally, it would probably would
use much of the stock componets that a laptop uses. Of course, the audio
circuitry is more extensive than a laptop, but they have this developed
anyway.

As for product runs, how much difference are they to the average laptop
anyway. There are so many laptops and netbooks out there now and many
from much smaller companies than Logitech. A classic example is the new
internet tablet from always innovating. Now this is "design" and could
probably run slimserver at least harware wise, and is going for about
the same price.

People can run slimserver on some pretty low powered PC's, notebooks,
nettops and even NAS units, so I really don't think it would be too hard
to include this in a slim device I think the only reason they don't
is because it would defeat their name ;O) It won't be a slim device
anymore would it ;O)

I personally am tired that I have to keep switching on my PC every time
I listen to music. This was fine when I bought the device, but that is
so retro these days.

Just started using your proggy and working very well.

Some glitches - played songs disappear from the top of the playlist
also selecting a song on the playlist and "move to top" which I would
assume is Play Next sends the track into oblivion! or the top of the
already disappearing list of tracks. Moving the track one place up at a
time works fine as does adding tracks as next play when creating an on
the fly playlist.

Touchflow works well.

Suggestion use the rotating wheel on the HTC device to scroll? Is there
a shuffle rest of playlist option?

Great effort.

One weird disconnect between what the support rep said about not being
able to repair my SB3 because there are not parts left is that Logitech
is still selling (and thus still supporting) the last of the
SlimDevice-logo'ed SB3's:

Yeah, other threads have gone through this before. Many seem to have had
their power brick pack up. Try testing the output from the power brick.
You could search for the specs in the forum they're there several times
and I don't recall them.

You might try opening up and removing the wireless card. I recall
seeing other threads where that allowed the SB3 to work (although if you
need to run wireless, that's not much good!)

In the good ole days there would be a post from Sean telling you how to
fix it yourself.

After you fixed it we'd all chime in and say how awesome it is that the
founder will post repair instructions on the forum.

Aaah, the good ole days...

This also causes me some concern as I have 2 SD SB3s and my parents
have another one.

Bricked in the sense that I get no display and Slimserver doesn't see
the SB3 on power up.

Reset (holding + button) has no effect. I cross checked power supplies
with my other SB# and the power supply is OK.

I wasn't familiar with Xilink reset (holding 1 button) until now, but I
tried that too. Thanks for the suggestion.

FYI for others: here's the doc on resets:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_Reset_commands

In the past I had a "display only" issue where the display died but the
SB3 still showed up on the network. SD fixed that for me. In this case
the SB3 seems completely non-functional, the only sign of life being the
red light peeking out the back of the optical socket.

Re: [slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"

2009-09-02 Thread dwc

Thanks Siduhe,

Got escalated and spoke to second rep. Unfortunately the SB3's with
the "Slimdevices" Logo (as opposed to the Logitech Logo) are not
eligible for repair - even paid repair - at this point. The rep said
the parts are not in inventory. [This is curious to me as the Classic
sure looks like an SB3, but I guess they have changed internal
parts...(?)]

So I cannot pay the $90 for a fix. I was offered a discount on a new
purchase, pending my sending the dead unit back in. So the idea is that
I send this SB3 back in with the RMA they emailed me, and then a sales
rep will call me up and give me some kind of discount towards my next
purchase.

The support rep didn't have all the details on the discount offer, so I
will update this thread after I have sent the unit in and spoken to the
rep who should call me shortly thereafter.

Re: [slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"

2009-09-02 Thread Siduhe

The Logitech warranty is "your Logitech hardware product shall be free
from defects in material and workmanship for two (2) years, beginning
from the date of purchase." I believe this is worldwide, but it may
depend where you purchased it (as local law requirements are different
the world over)

It gets more complicated when you've purchased it from from a third
party vendor, who normally only refund or exchange for one year, but the
manufacturer warranty should still be valid for an additional 12
months.

Slim Devices (i.e. the division of Logitech based in the US) used to do
out of warranty repairs for a $90 fee or similar, but not clear if this
is still offered - others outside the US have reportedly been told by
Logitech that repairs are not available. Let us know how you get on
with support and others may be able to advise you.

No way.
Normally you'd look at the GPU power instead of the CPU. Since hardware
acceleration is not always available under linux, you'll have to check
carefully for the brand/type of graphics card to buy for a linux based
mythtv box.
Then again hardware acceleration will work with some limitations in
terms of formats (mpeg2, mpeg4) and bandwidth.

In case you want to decode about any format in high-def, you'll need to
use software decoders in the CPU. I think a Core 2 is ok for anything
720p and a big quad is necessary for 1080p @ very high bitrates as found
on a blu ray movie.
(A big quad won't do for a nice htpc, imho: power = heat = noise.)

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2009-09-02 Thread Locuth

Hey Steven,

The problem can be either one of the following:
SlimControl shows you an empty list, because it has scrolled past the
end.
move you finger up/down across the empty list.
If things appear, you're all set. (that's a bug in version 0.95)

Or,
SlimControl shows you an empty list because it had a timeout while
downloading.
Slimcontrol 0.95 is not too smart about handling transmission breaks.

Go to the settings (cogwheel in the popup menu)
Change your network timeout to 8000 or 9000 (ms).
Restart SlimControl.

Next time you open the browser, closely watch the status bar (top)
If things fail again, you can tell what's happend.

Get back to me.

[slim] Player stops after a few songs are played...

2009-09-02 Thread kbindera

I am running 7.3.3 of slimserver on a win2k3 server box. I have been
successfully running slimserver for over three years on this box. I
have upgraded over the years, as new versions have become available.
Everything has worked well. With version 7.3.3 and a version or two
before it, I have noticed that I can no longer get an album to play all
the way through, without the player stopping. Typically, it will play
two or three songs and then the device will display the next song to be
played but will say "Stopped...".
I have tried a fresh install of the software, and I have also tried
hardwiring the device directly into my network. So I know this is not
some issue with wireless connectivity.
Anyway, this is really annoying problem and I see no way around it. It
has made the device pretty useless.

What's up? What changed? Is there some magic config setting I am
missing?

[slim] Vortexbox Appliance help?

2009-09-02 Thread bjones10

Got a VBA for my b'day and it's up and running, feeding a SB3 and a
Duet. There are a couple things, though, that have me flummoxed and I'd
really appreciate any help.

First thing, I'm having trouble getting to the VBA GUI. When I go to
:9000, I go straight into the VBA's SqueezeCenter. How do I get
to the VBA's GUI?

Second (and sussing out the questions above probably fixes this), how
do I adjust the VBA's time shown on the SB3? I'm CST, but the player
shows EST when using the VBA as the music source. Sounds like I can
adjust it via the GUI, once I can get to the GUI.

Any help much appreciated ... thanks very much!

Sounds like the time-capsule does not have DHCP enabled for wireless.
An "active" ethernet adapter has to have an address and they will make

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-09-02 Thread Swimmerbird123

Thanks, I hadn't run the test, but it looks helpful. Now I get 100% on
all rates except 5000, which jumps between 80% and 100%.

This morning I am streaming a European radio station from here in the
US with no problem, with wireless strength in the SB3 fluctuating
between 38% and 46%. I haven't tried optimizing the position of the new
router so maybe that can improve.

My point is simply that even at these low strengths, the streaming can
work perfectly well. The problem seems to have been in the hand-shaking
somewhere, either the old router or the SB3 or both.

My laptop could pick up and hold a signal when the SB3 was not able to
connect at all. So it wasn't just a faulty router. And the SB3 would
either freeze or have delayed responses to the remote of 15 seconds or
more. That's not just bad connectivity, it seems to me to reflect bad
error processing of some kind in the SB3. I don't know enough about the
particulars of network interface programming to go any further than that
though.

Regarding the fingerprint generation - I think that it should be
integrated in such a say that you can choose to do the fully analysis or
not. I have a large collection and have no interest in running a full
analysis on my library. MusicIP works just fine for me with the
information it gathers just on the scan to identify if something is
mixable or not.

[slim] New computer/router; connection problems!

2009-09-02 Thread postage22

I recently purchased a mac mini running Mac OS X 10.5, and a time
capsule router (the same router hardware as an airport extreme). When i
try to connect my SB3, it finds an IP address something like
172.16.43.1. My computers IP address is 10.0.2.1, so the SB3 never
finds the music source. When I connect via ethernet, it finds the
proper 10.0.2.1 address, and works fine. The router allows for 2
networks, a normal secured network (mine is configured with WPA/WPA2
security), and a "guest network", which is unsecured. The SB3 sees both
networks, but when I connect through either, my music source doesn't
appear.

I called logitech support, and they seemed confused that the router was
"passing" this unusual IP address to the SB3. I am running
squeezecenter 7.3.3, I have 2 SB3s and one of the original squeezeboxes.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

They have some rudimentary tools, the wireless strength number (btw
45% is low ? ) alas logitech should come forward with some numbers that
y% is enough for mp3 streams and x% is enough for flac or similar.
And have you seen the network test in squeezecenter or the controller
?
You can test different streamingrates from very low rates and up to
5000kbps
knowing that a flac stream is roughly 800kpbs you know what to expect.
The controller has a diagnostic setting that can tell the IP settings
in your players and see if you can connect your server or squeezenetwork
( I think this is in beta ? ) it even pings squeezenetwork.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-09-02 Thread Swimmerbird123

My experience, in case it is useful:

Running 7.3.2 on Linux server, wired to Zoom X6 gateway router
(firmware 2.1.5 from 2007), wireless G to SB3, streaming flac and
internet radio. After installing 7.3.2 back in March, things worked
pretty well for a couple of months and then gradually degraded to the
point of near unusability, with frequent 'rebufferings' and 'cannot
connect'. I wondered whether new software had been pushed to player
without notification. A wireless laptop running Vista sitting close to
the SB3 kept working fine with long downloads from internet or
hours-long back ups and maintenance of music library on the remote
server.

Most frustrating was internet radio - player would connect for maybe a
minute or two and then stop, sometimes reconnecting after another minute
or two, but more often just 'cannot connect' - player would freeze and
be unable to change to music library or scroll through radio stations.
Direct radio streaming from internet to a computer worked OK, so it
wasn't just that the radio station was kicking out the connection. When
the SB3 wouldn't connect and offered the option to try again or go left,
re-attempting the connection still would not connect at all for long
enough to get sound out of the player, even after multiple tries, yet
the nearby laptop kept connecting without problem.

Just the other day I purchased a new router, Linksys WRT160N, and am
running it in wireless-G mode. All my 'cannot connect' and
'rebufferings' seem to have vanished, the Squeezebox is working great
again. So I evidently had network problems that were causing my
difficulty.

I don't think the problem was wireless signal strength, since the
laptop near the SB3 connected fine, and with the new router, the
strength in the SB3 player is still only 45% or so. So I wonder whether
perhaps older routers don't handle the streaming or hand-shaking as well
for some reason. Or that the error-handling in the SB3 was not very
robust and when radio station got lost or the connection broke for
whatever reason, the player couldn't recover properly.

Anyway, I wonder whether Logitech couldn't do something to improve the
robustness of the SB3 performance, even on suboptimal networks. I
remember back in the 90's when the Sun computer company (big unix
installations) suddenly realized it was not enough just to list the
requirements of a proper operating environment, but that their customers
simply weren't able to establish or maintain those by themselves. The
company CEO wrote that it was like a revelation, and that it became part
of the company's job to help them maintain those. Logitech obviously
can't maintain home networks for people, but perhaps they could provide
a suite of tools or other robust evaluation procedures to pinpoint where
the network problems are.

Anyway, I am glad my Squeezebox is working reliably again, and I
apologize to it for all those bad thoughts I had about it being a piece
of crap.

Good point. I might use my old router then just to service my SB3's,
and the new one for general PC use. Assuming you can make a DG834G act
as just an AP.

I've changed channels, with little difference. I've tried those which
no-one in my neighbourhood appear to use (or show up in my WiFi site
monitor). It's not clear if general interference on those channels is
the problem. Does Netstumbler show any info on this? RxQual or
something? I'll install it tonight and see if it shows anything.

As soon as *other* equipment enter the wifi mix all bets are off.
There is a finite bandwidth available if an wireless PC visit an
website with lots of adds or is doing an upgrade, or running a torrent
client ;) what do you expect ? How is music streaming going to react
while other stuff is running on the network.
One can have more than one network/different AP for the computers than
the squeezeboxes or use N router and let the PC's wotk on the N
channel.

If you are listening to internet radio you have a router with Qos
functions, this works quite ok I tried that and managed to tune those
fillters so I could use a torrentclient while listening to radio

I kind of agree with you as long as the SD card support was good, IE if
the library views could be used as normal whilst using local sd card usb
HDD (rather than using browser view) then this would suit most peoples
in car requirements.

though depending on the final size of this thing the installation could
be a big custom job.

That's ok, but please do not just dump anything to do with rebuffering
into that bug. Specifically, if you have or suspect a wireless
connectivity issue then do not use that bug. That bug is for
investigating why streaming seems to have problems under some
circumstance in 7.3 that were not present in 7.2.

And remember that 7.2 was not -capable- of getting into a rebuffering
state with FLAC or anything transcoded to FLAC. In that case you just
got gappy output.

+1 for musicip.

Personally i wish logitech would buy out musicip and make it official -
development has pretty much stalled now, has it not? It would be a great
'app' and give them a serious advantage over competitors (excluding
apple who already have genius).

As for album art, and very good source is www.discogs.com, especially
for harder to find and sometimes better quality, which MP3tag integrates
with. Could this be added, plus others? The main issue i have with

Just an update on my testing last night ...

Streaming FLAC to laptop over wireless playing with VLC did have a
couple of buffering issues, but they were recovered quickly and with far
fewer occurrences.

With just the SB3 on the wireless network, playback was okay, but still
with a few rebufferring events. As soon as the misses switched on her
laptop (wireless), the SB3 was unusable with rebufferring events.

Seems that I have a wireless bandwidth issue for sure, which I'm hoping
the new router will resolve ... hopefully arriving today/tomorrow.

However, the SB3's inability to recover within a short period of time
and then just dropping out and freezing up is a real pain. What logs
