OK - wanted to give you some updates on my experience. The Sonos hardware is really pretty solid - well made, and works well. However - NOT bulletproof. I have had some issues occasionally with dropouts and wireless signal strength. While the call in Support has been pretty good, I'm sorely disappointed with their forums - there is NOTHING like the level of interaction present here, either in terms of user input or vendor involvement and feedback. These forums are really amazing compared to what I'm experiencing over there. Things break, nothing lasts forever. These products are electronic, not stone. The two year period is generous and unusually long for products like this. Most electronic products have a much shorter manufacturers warranty than is provided for the Squeeze line. Electronics manufacturers are in the business of making and selling products, not selling insurance policies. Assuming that a warranty period will never be "forever", what do you think would be reasonable? If you want a longer warranty period, most retailers are more than happy to sell supplementary coverage. At least that is true in the US, I don't know where you are. But conventional wisdom is that purchasing such supplemental coverage is, on average, not worth it. dwc, If your wireless card is bad read the thread in the DIY forum concerning converting a wired version to wireless; since this is my first post I am not allowed that privilege by forum rules. I will try another post with the link. I found that the card can be found on eBay under Dell Inspiron 300M, 510M, 4000 or 5100. They go for about $15. Logitech/Slim Devices most certainly stand behind Squeezebox Products! The current warranty coverage is Two Years Parts and Labor Warranty on the SB3. And I believe a flat rate charge of $90 to fix a broken unit out of warranty. Now I think that is more then fair and in no way "locks you into buying a new product" if there is a failure. On the other hand this is a specialized product, unlike a notebook which must be able to work with every bit of windows software the world can throw at it. The screen is much larger as well which is where a chunk of the cost comes from, and internally, it would probably would use much of the stock componets that a laptop uses. Of course, the audio circuitry is more extensive than a laptop, but they have this developed anyway. As for product runs, how much difference are they to the average laptop anyway. There are so many laptops and netbooks out there now and many from much smaller companies than Logitech. A classic example is the new internet tablet from always innovating. Now this is "design" and could probably run slimserver at least harware wise, and is going for about the same price. People can run slimserver on some pretty low powered PC's, notebooks, nettops and even NAS units, so I really don't think it would be too hard to include this in a slim device I think the only reason they don't is because it would defeat their name ;O) It won't be a slim device anymore would it ;O) I personally am tired that I have to keep switching on my PC every time I listen to music. Just started using your proggy and working very well. Thanks Siduhe, Got escalated and spoke to second rep. Unfortunately the SB3's with the "Slimdevices" Logo (as opposed to the Logitech Logo) are not eligible for repair - even paid repair - at this point. The rep said the parts are not in inventory. [This is curious to me as the Classic sure looks like an SB3, but I guess they have changed internal parts...(?)] So I cannot pay the $90 for a fix. I was offered a discount on a new purchase, pending my sending the dead unit back in. Re: [slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"
The Logitech warranty is "your Logitech hardware product shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for two (2) years, beginning from the date of purchase." I believe this is worldwide, but it may depend where you purchased it (as local law requirements are different the world over) It gets more complicated when you've purchased it from from a third party vendor, who normally only refund or exchange for one year, but the manufacturer warranty should still be valid for an additional 12 months. Slim Devices (i.e. the division of Logitech based in the US) used to do out of warranty repairs for a $90 fee or similar, but not clear if this is still offered - others outside the US have reportedly been told by Logitech that repairs are not available. Let us know how you get on with support and others may be able to advise you. -- Siduhe Who am I on 'LAST.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/siduhe)? "-Siduhe Loved Tracks radio got the thumbs up. Then again hardware acceleration will work with some limitations in terms of formats (mpeg2, mpeg4) and bandwidth. In case you want to decode about any format in high-def, you'll need to use software decoders in the CPU. Hey Steven, The problem can be either one of the following: SlimControl shows you an empty list, because it has scrolled past the end. move you finger up/down across the empty list. If things appear, you're all set. (that's a bug in version 0.95) Or, SlimControl shows you an empty list because it had a timeout while downloading. [slim] Player stops after a few songs are played...
I am running 7.3.3 of slimserver on a win2k3 server box. I have been successfully running slimserver for over three years on this box. I have upgraded over the years, as new versions have become available. Everything has worked well. With version 7.3.3 and a version or two before it, I have noticed that I can no longer get an album to play all the way through, without the player stopping. Typically, it will play two or three songs and then the device will display the next song to be played but will say "Stopped...". I have tried a fresh install of the software, and I have also tried hardwiring the device directly into my network. So I know this is not some issue with wireless connectivity. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
Thanks, I hadn't run the test, but it looks helpful. Now I get 100% on all rates except 5000, which jumps between 80% and 100%. This morning I am streaming a European radio station from here in the US with no problem, with wireless strength in the SB3 fluctuating between 38% and 46%. I haven't tried optimizing the position of the new router so maybe that can improve. My point is simply that even at these low strengths, the streaming can work perfectly well. The problem seems to have been in the hand-shaking somewhere, either the old router or the SB3 or both. My laptop could pick up and hold a signal when the SB3 was not able to connect at all. So it wasn't just a faulty router. And the SB3 would either freeze or have delayed responses to the remote of 15 seconds or more. That's not just bad connectivity, it seems to me to reflect bad error processing of some kind in the SB3. I don't know enough about the particulars of network interface programming to go any further than that though. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
My experience, in case it is useful: Running 7.3.2 on Linux server, wired to Zoom X6 gateway router (firmware 2.1.5 from 2007), wireless G to SB3, streaming flac and internet radio. After installing 7.3.2 back in March, things worked pretty well for a couple of months and then gradually degraded to the point of near unusability, with frequent 'rebufferings' and 'cannot connect'. I wondered whether new software had been pushed to player without notification. A wireless laptop running Vista sitting close to the SB3 kept working fine with long downloads from internet or hours-long back ups and maintenance of music library on the remote server. Most frustrating was internet radio - player would connect for maybe a minute or two and then stop, sometimes reconnecting after another minute or two, but more often just 'cannot connect' - player would freeze and be unable to change to music library or scroll through radio stations. Direct radio streaming from internet to a computer worked OK, so it wasn't just that the radio station was kicking out the connection. When the SB3 wouldn't connect and offered the option to try again or go left, re-attempting the connection still would not connect at all for long enough to get sound out of the player, even after multiple tries, yet the nearby laptop kept connecting without problem. Just the other day I purchased a new router, Linksys WRT160N, and am running it in wireless-G mode. All my 'cannot connect' and 'rebufferings' seem to have vanished, the Squeezebox is working great again. So I evidently had network problems that were causing my difficulty. I don't think the problem was wireless signal strength, since the laptop near the SB3 connected fine, and with the new router, the strength in the SB3 player is still only 45% or so. So I wonder whether perhaps older routers don't handle the streaming or hand-shaking as well for some reason. Or that the error-handling in the SB3 was not very robust and when radio station got lost or the connection broke for whatever reason, the player couldn't recover properly. Anyway, I wonder whether Logitech couldn't do something to improve the robustness of the SB3 performance, even on suboptimal networks. I remember back in the 90's when the Sun computer company (big unix installations) suddenly realized it was not enough just to list the requirements of a proper operating environment, but that their customers simply weren't able to establish or maintain those by themselves. The company CEO wrote that it was like a revelation, and that it became part of the company's job to help them maintain those. Logitech obviously can't maintain home networks for people, but perhaps they could provide a suite of tools or other robust evaluation procedures to pinpoint where the network problems are. Anyway, I am glad my Squeezebox is working reliably again, and I apologize to it for all those bad thoughts I had about it being a piece of crap. I've tried those which no-one in my neighbourhood appear to use (or show up in my WiFi site monitor). It's not clear if general interference on those channels is the problem. Does Netstumbler show any info on this? RxQual or something? There is a finite bandwidth available if an wireless PC visit an website with lots of adds or is doing an upgrade, or running a torrent client ;) what do you expect ? How is music streaming going to react while other stuff is running on the network. One can have more than one network/different AP for the computers than the squeezeboxes or use N router and let the PC's wotk on the N channel. If you are listening to internet radio you have a router with Qos functions, this works quite ok I tried that and managed to tune those fillters so I could use a torrentclient while listening to radio -- Mnyb No it can NOT be controlled with iTunes Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65719 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I think the best potential use for the new product would be installation in a car. The touch screen would actually save the hassle of having to mount the remote somewhere, and it'd look awesome in a dashboard. Specifically, if you have or suspect a wireless connectivity issue then do not use that bug. That bug is for investigating why streaming seems to have problems under some circumstance in 7.3 that were not present in 7.2. And remember that 7.2 was not -capable- of getting into a rebuffering state with FLAC or anything transcoded to FLAC. In that case you just got gappy output. -- awy awy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7480 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65719 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] What's next for VortexBox???
+1 for musicip. Personally i wish logitech would buy out musicip and make it official - development has pretty much stalled now, has it not? It would be a great 'app' and give them a serious advantage over competitors (excluding apple who already have genius). As for album art, and very good source is www.discogs.com, especially for harder to find and sometimes better quality, which MP3tag integrates with. Could this be added, plus others? The main issue i have with Amazon is the large white border the images often have. -- autopilot Cheers, auto. *lounge:* squeezebox 3, squeezebox controller, cambridge audio 640a, mission 701's *kitchen:* squeezebox, trends ta-10.1, kef cresta 1's. *bedroom:* squeezebox boom *bathroom/garden:* squeezebox boom *car:* ipod classic 80gb autopilot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What's next for VortexBox???
I vote for - MusicIP pre-installed and configured (plus the ability to enter your key somewhere to use the extra features) - Some safe means of storing the MusicIP fingerprint data in the files (by either using genpuid [a working version], or making headless do it), for the people who want to have "all-in-a-box". - dual-drive possibility (1 DVD, 1HDD, 1 empty HDD slot) - a dual-core version -- Moonbase Moonbase: 'The Problem Solver' (http://www.kaufen-ist-toll.de/moonbase) Moonbase's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21594 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
Just an update on my testing last night ... Streaming FLAC to laptop over wireless playing with VLC did have a couple of buffering issues, but they were recovered quickly and with far fewer occurrences. With just the SB3 on the wireless network, playback was okay, but still with a few rebufferring events. As soon as the misses switched on her laptop (wireless), the SB3 was unusable with rebufferring events. Seems that I have a wireless bandwidth issue for sure, which I'm hoping the new router will resolve ... hopefully arriving today/tomorrow. However, the SB3's inability to recover within a short period of time and then just dropping out and freezing up is a real pain.
