Re: [slim] Future of Squeezebox Classic
Yes the Touch is a leap forward hardware wise very good in fact excellent hardware it exceeds my expectations by a wide margin for "SB4". It has more native formats to, less transcoding and radiostream issues. In short the upgrade we all wanted I'm getting it for the 24/96 . The tweak potential is enormous with linux onboard. But mr dBerriff has a point. The server backend has some really weak spots even if it some instances is extremely good the basic stuff is excellent it gets your music to the player. even if you discard the cd rip/network stuff as things you have to know to have a life these day's, like being an illiterate was a major problem in when newspapers where the hot new media. I have to admit that i learned networking when i got my first SB that's because it was the first time i had more than one networked device at home. I probably had to go trough the same learning curve if got another device for another purpose so this is not an exclusive SB problem it hits whoever is "first" now i'm getting ip telephony too. So running cat5 and crimping contacts will be as common as connecting extension cords or changing fuse in the fuse box . Anyway you can have Music-IP if you want to but it takes serious wizardry to set up Logitech simply *must* do a system similar to appple genuis and make it a standard part of the system. Also a lot the very nice stuff erland has done for community via his excellent pluginsis a *must be standard* but in a simplified form, especially no non standard tag hacking required. And the very weak playlist creation it still not posible to edit and build playlist without a choosen player to build it on. You cant even save changes to playlist with the controller you have to scroll trough every letter and save it again The interfaces avialable are crude, a really nice playlist editor of some kind is also a *must do now* Btw I'm not an iTunes fan either I find it confusing in some spots to i'm not used to it and iTunes also have a learning curve so it's not as unitive as people wants to believe, but it is the first player many ever sees and expects everything else to be like that. -- Mnyb No it can NOT be controlled with iTunes Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67399 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well, a lot of people do carry music and photos on USB drives and SD cards, so it's a useful feature. It also means the player itself is running a server, which is a feature many longtime users have wanted. As is 24/96 playback, a color screen, etc. There's nothing on the Touch that hasn't been requested by this community many many times. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67399 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Radio Free Colorado is now streaming in 5.1 Channel Surround Sound
Mike, Thanks for providing a thorough background on what RFC is doing. However, I think my original point still stands: if the original source material was mixed/recorded in 2.0, you are really getting only a facsimile of true 5.1 surround sound. This can be achieved via the -encoder- method as you described (subsequently decoded by a Dolby Digital surround receiver), _or_ via a -decoder- like Dolby ProLogicII. Regardless the result is the same. If you take "Stairway to Heaven" and RFC encodes it using a the Omnia DSP to 5.1, the end result (decoded) is essentially the same as if you take the same song via regular 2.0 CD and decode it via Dolby ProLogicII/DTS Neo:6 Music/etc. You are getting a facsimile or "fake" surround sound. True 5.1 would only come from remixing of the original session tapes to a discrete 5.1 mix. Too bad RFC doesn't have access to broadcast some of the natively-mixed 5.1 material out there... -- SamS SamS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9261 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67535 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] more buffering/wireless issues
First I would try to see if you have some new source of interference. Some things, such as a neighbor's wifi network, you can see with tools such as Net Stumbler. Other things like a cordless phone, baby monitor, or poorly shielded microwave are harder to detect -- except, of course, if they are in your house. If a neighbor has put in or modified an wifi network that's causing interference you can try to change the wireless channel on your wifi router. The 3 non-overlapping channels are 1, 6, and 11. If your Transporter is still doing fine in the basement, with no dropouts, then it doesn't sound to me like the router is crapping out. If your signal strength upstairs was previously only 33% then I would suggest doing something with your current router to improve that. You could try putting on a stronger antenna on your current router, or you could add a wireless access point to an upstairs location. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67580 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] more buffering/wireless issues
I know this has been covered many times and I have read those posts. I still have questions. I am using a 20 month old Linksys wrt 100 wireless router, wireless G.My music is on a very fast Thecus n5200 Pro with tons of free space. The router is in the same room as my transporter, which is in the basement. The connection is great. I have never had a drop. Under playing settings, it says the wireless strength is 97 %. My SB3 is 2 floors up. For the past 2 years, I have not had any significant buffering/drop issues. Maybe every 3-4 weeks, there would be an issue. I would reboot the SB3 or the router or my NAS and all would be fine. For the last 10 days, however, it has been non-stop drops. I can't get it to stop even by constant rebooting. I have increased the buffer and that has helped a little, but has not fixed the problem. The wireless strength is usually around 33%, but sometimes dips to 19%. My wife's laptop (connected to wireless) has also been dropping. Anyway, do I need a new router, perhaps one with wirless N? Or, should I try something else first. It doesn't actually know the bit rate in advance. 705.6 is just an estimate assuming 50% compression of 44.1/16 material. 50% (44.1 * 16 * 2) = 705.6. The actual FLAC bit rate is likely to be pretty close to the ALAC rate, but the important thing to realize is that no matter what the resultant bit rate IT WILL BE LOSSLESS. Some compressors are better than others, and even the same compressor can yield different bit rates by varying parameters which tell it how hard to try. When discussing lossless codecs the bitrate is no indication whatsoever of sound quality. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] WEP Connection problem
Thanks so much for your reply. They brought in a new wireless router -- something to do with the digital cable tv that was being bundled with internet service. Previously, I had no password protection. Just an open network. So he had me choose a 13 digit WEP password. That works fine to get my computer on the network, but not the SB. He gave me a cable to connect directly between my computer's ethernet port and the router if I should have to change settings. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that, if that's what's called for. dBerriff;455586 Wrote: > WiFi terminology has been inherited from the standards side with no > attempt to make it more accessible ... > > Diagnosis at a distance is difficult but here goes... > > 1. Yeah, well, similar thing happened to me today. My settings were to turn off the controller's screen to extend its usage (no screensaver...). Re: [slim] Radio Free Colorado is now streaming in 5.1 Channel Surround Sound
Gary sent me a message tonight snipped from the site http://www.hometheaterforum.com: "DPL II is a decoder only. It works with any 2 channel stereo source whether surround encoded or not, although you will get better channel separation on Dolby Surround encoded material. DPL II works with the same Dolby Surround encoding as the original Pro Logic, but instead of a frequency limited mono surround, you get full range stereo surrounds." To forum members SAM's post here, I asked Gary at RFC about what you said: "If that is the case, wouldn't one achieve the same/similar results from engaging DPL2 on their receiver or pre-amp?" The answer RFC e-mailed to me SAM, and from what I read on the internet tonight about Surround encoding on the Dolby and other manufacturer's web sites is that the audio material (live streamed or not) needs to be encoded into a 5.1, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Live, DTS, etc. format for a true _stereo_ Surround effect and Center channel effect to be achieved. (Dolby is not the only encoder brand type, just the most well known). So, SAM from what I think I now understand is that "engaging DPL2 on their receiver or preamp" as you said, is only half of the pairing. When you engage (you mean turn on?) a certain surround setting on your equipment, you are turning on the _decoder_ portion (one half) of the surround sound encoding equation. RFC is doing their part at the source by providing the _encoding_ portion of the surround sound equation, or the first 1/2 of the equation of the surround encoded stream. Gary said to me what is going on with this new RFC stream is a Surround Sound "Codec" is being used by RFC which is then embedded into the MP3 stream. Codec is a technical jargon abbreviation for "Coder/Decoder". "Encoders" apply math to encode the signal source, then the Encoded signal is followed by or sent to a "Decoder" which applies its own math to decode the encoding. The decoding could be done by a device connected by analog audio cables, a device connected by a Digital audio cable connection, a device connected to a Cable Television receiver or even from a Satellite signal. So, RFC's 5.1 channel stream (or other sound material encoded in a surround format) is the source part of the "Codec", it is the "Coder" part. Or, consider it the 1/2 of the Codec signal that is provided to you. Then, it's up to you to decide what is the most pleasing, compatible or best sounding Decoder setting to use at your end. Activating certain surround decoder settings on your receiver or preamp provides the latter 1/2 of the sources "Codec", the Decoder, meaning your selected Surround Decoder is providing 1/2 of some type of mathematical solution to the "Codec". Essentially the surround encoding by RFC is embedded into their 192 kbps MP3 stream. This is all possible since some current Dolby encoding is packaged, or carried within an AAC stream of varying bandwidth instead of MP3. I think I read somewhere that Cinema quality DTS uses a PCM bitstream. Gary told me the reason Dolby usually packages their surround encoding within an AAC stream instead of MP3, MP2 or WMA has to do with minimizing monetary royalty payments to non-Dolby patent holders. Gary said when he monitors RFC he uses the 5.1 setting on his Home Theater system and prefers the sound that way, but that your results can vary because his Home Theater system uses: "full-range tower speakers for the front left/right speakers and a large center channel JBL dialog speaker. His left/right front speakers are mated to a Velodyne powered subwoofer with its crossover set to a 6 decibels per octive bandpass slope beginning at 200 Hz" (quoted from Gary). When I activate the Surround setting on my Sony Home Theater system, doing an A/B comparison to other radio stations (FM and Internet) and then listening to Radio Free Colorado as the signal source, to me the sound just leaps out and fills the entire room with better surround imaging and clarity. Gary said the Omnia DSP unit and mating software package being used at Radio Free Colorado can and does mathematically derive separate _stereo_, full-range surround for all channels up to 5.1, whether the original source material RFC plays is surround encoded or not. Finally, I asked about 7.1 encoding, etc. and the reply I received is that Gary felt any encoding of Radio Free Colorado's stream beyond 5.1 channels would be overkill. I agree, since I have the "wife" factor to deal with, adding more speakers to the living room would cause marital distress. :( Personally I find what Radio Free Colorado is doing fascinating. RFC is still experimenting with the encoded sound level of the Subwoofer channel. Also I note in my listening to RFC that older songs, or poorly recorded songs are more easily noticed now than before. Songs with better recording quality, some of which I own on Compact Disc, sound much better on RFC than the poorer sounding songs which have a bad mix, tape hiss, etc. I

Re: [slim] WEP Connection problem
Hi there I think it's sad that a provider "upgrades" a customers router to use WEP as wireless encryption, because WEP is close to useless. The only wireless encryption standard right now that is not yet cracked it WPA2. Some even claim they can crack WPA within minutes. But I guess you probably aren't looking for a lecture about wireless security but for a solution. I think you need to convert the ASCII WEP key to a HEX key. This should give you 26 HEX numbers from your 13 ASCII characters.
