Re: [slim] Is it possible to imbed one playlist into another?

2009-09-13 Thread erland

I think you should be able to insert a single song or single album by
holding Add button down for a while, this issue an "insert" command for
the selected song or album.

I'm not sure if it also works to select another Dynamic Playlist
playlist, but please try it and reply if it works or not so I know.

Yeah, but it requires my pc to be on. My NAS won't work with alien bbc,
and even having the NAS on is an annoyance. What's the point of squeeze

At least it's clear.

The problem there, it's not only one station, but quite a number of
them.

Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-09-13 Thread Munge

I tried the tip from alex_london, and it’s a brilliant solution! Some
comments:
- sometimes Safari doesn’t start the playback, then I just click Done
and try again
- you need to have lame installed on the server
- you might need to adjust player (i.e. for the iPod) Audio settings in
SqueezeCenter
- as already pointed out by alex_london, there is quite a delay because
of the buffering
Using e.g. iPeng to control the iPod and then Safari to play even gives
you background music. You can run any application except Safari. No need
for Mobile Squeeze if you ask me.
(I use iPeng 1.0.5, iPod 3.1.1, SqueezeCenter 7.3.2.)

Re: [slim] Bathroom compatible squeezebox

2009-09-13 Thread pippin

At least in Germany the rules only apply to what you are allowed to
install in the bathroom (as a professional). No laws forbidding to use a
radio in the bathroom.

The first think you'd have to disallow if you did were hairdryers which
would be kind of ridiculous.

It's a different animal for a manufacturer to label something as "for
bathroom use" since in that case you'd be liable for it working
correctly and safely.

Same here. There are a *few* exceptions where I will listen to GOOD
96k music streams (like Sky.fm or Soma).
I use the ShoutCast Bitrate Filtering set at 128k (only 128kbps or

[slim] Update borked display on SB3

2009-09-13 Thread edesilva

I fired up an SB3 that hadn't been used in 6 mo. or so and it proceeded
to install an update--everything seemed fine, display worked normally.
After the update, however, most of the top part of the VFD is gone--just
black. The bottom 1/8" or so works fine, but the rest of the top of the
letters are cut off.

Any way of forcing the SB3 to do the update again? If that doesn't
work, any way to revert back to the prior version and continue running?
The SB3 says it is firmware 127.

Any other ideas?

[slim] Squeezebox can only connect to wireless channel 1

2009-09-13 Thread history

LS,
I have a Squeezebox 3 happily receiving tons of music from my
SqeezeCenter through a wireless connection using WEP encoding on radio
channel 1. However my neighbour is also using wireless modem on same
radio channel; additionally I beleive WEP security is less safe than WPA
or WPA2 security, so I want to change to radio channel 5 and WPA2
security. Although I can change these settings on mi wireless modem
(Fritzbox 7270), the Sqeezebox does not seem to reconnect using these
different settings.

Is it true, that with firmware version 120 I cannot connect on another
radio channel?

Is it true that WPA2 is not supported in firmware 120 for squeezebox3?

thanks for your comments,
-jaap

[slim] VBR mp3

2009-09-13 Thread Millwood

Is there any way to correctly position VBR mp3 streams short of reading
from the beginning. I ask because it appears the SB doesn't get it
really right. 7.4 seems better, but that may be a superstition.

So my question is - what should I expect here?

I do note that VBR files are reported as CBR in more info.

My sources of VBR files are Winamp CD rip and lame.

Do you mean seeking in VBR? 7.4 should indeed be better. Please file a

must be encoded with LAME for anything to work properly.

Re: [slim] Defection and challenge

2009-09-13 Thread socistep

A lot of different topics in this thread but an interesting discussion.

My view around ripping/tagging is that you are never going to get 100%
correct first time but there are some great tools out there which will
automate the process.

My personal approach is to use vortexbox on my small server, its great
to get a new CD in the post, pop it in the server and 10-15 later its
ripped, tagged, got cover art & available on my Squeezeboxes - this was
particularly beneficial when I re-ripped my cd collection into FLAC
earlier this year. I'm moving house at the moment, the Cd's are being
boxed up and will stay that way, as I've got all my music stored on the
server in lossless format then I have no need for having the cd's in a
rack taking up a lot of space.

Of course, there are times when it doesn't get the correct information
and I have to manually edit tags (I use mp3tag & the find cover art
plugin for this).

Before buying my first Squeezebox I used iTunes for ripping music to
then transfer to iPod/iPhone, to be honest I never had any problems and
liked the software, as it stands I rarely use it now and using SB kit
has opened my eyes to the limitations of Apple.

In terms of a "typical user", I fully understand where people come from
with that, I have a group of friends, we're all late 20's and everyone
has either an iPod or iPhone, out of that group I think perhaps only 2/3
from the 15 would be savvy enough to use SB kit - looking at the touch
and the radio these are the type of products that may well push that
number up. That might come across as slightly snobby but I think people
will know what I mean.

Re: [slim] VBR mp3

2009-09-13 Thread Millwood

Thanks Andy. My real, poorly stated question was - should I expect it
to work in 7.4, and how well.

I think you've said that it should, so I'll keep using it and open a
bug if I have a problem.

The thing that I was seeing in 7.3 was that I'd play maybe an hour into
a long track, and when I paused, it would restart nowhere near were it
had paused. And when I tried to find a spot whose time I knew (say 1
hour into a 2 hour track) I would wind up someplace else. I have not
seen that in 7.4, but that's very preliminary.

(These long tracks, if you're curious, are ripped from a good rtsp
stream from WBAA and converted to mp3 by lame.)

And finally - they do show up in more info as CBR. Does that mean I'm
messing up generating a good header?

indeed - but that was exactly my point when saying that most people
reading and posting into this forum, and spending much thought on the
subject, are the minority in the market. so don't assume your neighbor
is going to need your setup, that's all. :-)

i agree with the quality statement, but then again quality from a
certain point on is relative. the audiophile that laughs at someone
spending $5k on esoteric cables (while having spent 10k on speakers
himself) may in turn be laughed at by someone with a very clean, simple
sub-$2k setup that actually can sound pretty darn good these days. where
do you drawe the line for quality? i agree that 128k MP3 is unacceptable
for truly concentrated listening - but think that 256k MP3s sond pretty
good, and that a lot of music that audiophiles t this day use as a
reference (Orff "carmina Burana" anyone) does not need FLAC, arguably
the original recordning is not diminished an ounce at 192k. then again
stuff like Kevin Mahogany's "pride and enjoy" - it begs for FLAC and a
deserving system to breathe and induce utter musical bliss.

the point is - quality is very relative, and while no doubt is based on
some truths in technology and setup, it also to a certain degree
includes some less rational considerations with some regularity.

anyhow, anyone posting to this discussion is *not* representative of
the market average, we think *way* too much about quality. most people
do not even care to hear a difference between 128k and higher resolution
and just want convenience and a nice background soundtrack here and
there.

Re: [slim] Is it possible to imbed one playlist into another?

2009-09-13 Thread GeeJay

Well, it doesn't really imbed it, at least I don't think that is what's
happening.

When I add another playlist to the current one, it shows up as a single
separate item just like a song. New items from the currently playing
playlist even appear after the imbedded playlist, but once the imbedded
playlist is reached SC basically treats it as a brand new playlist...all
of the tracks from the old playlist are gone.

I guess it works ok. The imbedded playlist initially was populated
with 5 tracks. I immediately added the original playlist to the mix,
and once the 5 new tracks were finished another "new" playlist began.
Again, all the previously played tracks were erased.

The biggest negative is that since I use crossfade, the new playlist
abruptly cuts off the last track 10 seconds before the end (which is
when I have crossfade set to begin) and starts the new playlist.

Not exactly what I was hoping for, but I guess it will do in a pinch.

Re: [slim] How to make alarm timeout greather than 90 minutes?

Two possibilities:

- cheat around the limiting slider by using a different skin (eg. Classic)

- edit server/HTML/EN/html/settings/player/alarm.html: open it in a
texteditor, find sliderInput_0_90 and replace the last number with the
maximum you want.
