This is how it should work by default ? it does for me .
I have both server and squeezeboxes set to static-IP's , but afiak it
*should* work on dhcp networks to.
Maybe it's enough to have static-IP for the server.

Are you saying that this is working for You? When You power on server
SBR connecting again?
I have dhcp but SC and SBR always gets same ip's 192.168.1.20 for SBR
and 192.168.1.18 for SC. Mayby I should fill up "server_address: IP
address of currently active server (either Squeezenetwork or local

If I were a Logitech designer, right now I would be working on two
further devices:

DEDICATED SQUEEZECENTER/SBS \"SERVER\"[/B]
A BASIC DUAL DRIVE NAS USING RAID 1 \"MIRRORING\" WITH ENOUGH
PROCESSING POWER AND MEMORY TO RUN SBS COMFORTABLY AND QUICKLY. IT
SHOULD COME PRE-INSTALLED WITH TWO BIG HARD DRIVES. MOST IMPORTANTLY,
THE NAS FIRMWARE AND SBS SOFTWARE WILL BE PRE-INSTALLED ON FLASH MEMORY
SO THAT A HARD DISK FAILURE IS EASILY RECTIFIED. THE DRIVES COULD BE
MOUNTED ON SIMPLE SLIDE-IN CADDIES AND LOGITECH COULD SELL REPLACEMENT
DRIVES PRE-MOUNTED INTO CADDIES. A REBUILD OF THE RAID SHOULD BE
AUTOMATIC WHEN A NEW DRIVE IS ADDED.

THIS SHOULD NOT TRY AND REPLICATE ALL THE FUNCTIONALITY OF, FOR
INSTANCE, THE VORTEXBOX. IT DOES NOT NEED A CD/DVD DRIVE OR RIPPING
SOFTWARE. AS ANYBODY WHO HAS BEEN DOING DIGITAL MUSIC FOR A DECENT
LENGTH OF TIME, THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY MUSIC SOURCES, MUSIC TYPES, FILE
TYPES AND META DATA FORMATS TO CATER FOR EVERYBODY. IT SHOULD SIMPLY BE
A REPOSITORY FOR THE USER'S MUSIC COLLECTION WITH THE SOLE FUNCTION OF
RELIABLY RUNNING SBS 24/7.

IT NEEDS TO BE AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE AND HAVE VERY LOW POWER CONSUMPTION
AND SOUND OUTPUT AND DESIGNED TO BE LEFT ON 24/7. IF THEY WANT TO BE
REALLY INNOVATIVE, LOGITECH COULD BUILD IT USING 2.5\" MOBILE DRIVES SO
THAT IT CAN BE EVEN SMALLER AND LOWER POWER THAN MOST CURRENT NAS
DEVICES.

*DEDICATED SQUEEZEBOX WAP
A cheap and cheerful WAP that is there simply to provide a wireless
connection to the player(s). It would be designed for maximum
compatibility and reliability when used with SqueezeBox players. The
default setup should be to run alongside a user's current wireless
router or WAP giving a dedicated music network. A sort of open source
version of the Sonos network.

The [b]main* point of these devices will be that they are fully
compatible with all SBS functions (and as many plug-ins as possible), it
would be designed for reliability and - most important of all - backed
by Logitech support and a strong guarantee.

Everything would be pre-installed and as close to "plug and play" as
Logitech can make it. Only when digital music is as simple as "plug it
in and turn it on" will networked music systems such as SqueezeBox
become more widely accepted.

The more competition the better. :)

This unit looks very nice and has a lot of great features (mostly
duplicate features of SB players present and future).
But noticeably absent is support for any Music Services currently
supported by SB players (although I only quickly glanced at the specs
and supported streams).

Re: [slim] Why do we need to chose SqueezeCenter/SqueezeNetwork?

2009-09-21 Thread pablolie

a very intersting topic that shows how, even an entusiast early-adopter
user core, requirements and virews can be quite different.

i like the versatility of SC and SN. i think the confusing part is that
players that are switched to SN utterly "disappear" from the fact of the
earth as far as SC is concerned. and if something is called SC, i would
assume that it alwasy is aware of and able to establish control over any
player in my domain.

so philosophically speaking, i think isntead of what seems a big divide
and either/or choice, players should have two modes of operation - "SC
attached" or "SC bypass". but SC always maintains player visibility and
the ability to control them back.

and while i am an "always on" server person, there are factors to
consider there:
- some of us are constant tinkerers are like to upgrade change or
reinstall systems with some regularity. while SN is great in its ability
to mgive us music while our main machine is down, SC's inability to
backup player configuration is not the ideal tool there. it would be
*awesome* if SN could act as a configuration repository.
- granted modern systems have greatly brought down power consumption
(my E8600 based server combines good processing power with about 50W of
power (monitor off)), but unfortunately sleep modes are still very
temperamental on any home servers, since peripheral vendors don't seem
to test drivers that thoroughly for sleep in desktop duty

so even believers on "always on" regularly need to take down their
machines and upgrade and reconfigure them - scheduled downtime is a best
practice in IT... :-)

Looks like an odd problem. Is it possible one device or the other is
set to Europe's wireless standard - and the channels don't match except

Do You have another device that connects when you set the wireless to
channel 6? If you do and you are running XP and can you download
Netstumbler to analyze the router when its on channel 6?

2009-09-21 Thread ph0n33z

Alright,

I can play music over the SB through SC when I set
squeezecenter_address to my pc's IP. All of that works fine.

However, the led never changes from blue even after configuration.
Squeezenetwork does not see the player as being online, even when I can
play music to it. I am trying to use iPeng directly with the SB through
squeezenetwork, but since it doesn't see a player I can't do it.

Is there something else I have to do to configure the SB to speak
with Squeezenetwork? Is there a squeezenetwork ip that I can use instead
of my local SC?

[slim] Going green with a Transporter

2009-09-21 Thread kevin0964

Hi, today on my SB Classic, I have the power plugged into the switched
outlet on my AV receiver, so that the squeezebox turns on when I switch
on the AV receiver.

I am replacing the SB with a transporter and want to know if doing this
might damage the transporter. If I blow my SB Classic it is not the end
of the world - but the transporter ...

Seems like this would be no different than just plugging it in every
time I wanted to use it, but am not sure if this causes any undo wear or
problems as opposed to just powering it down to sleep mode.

Thanks

Such a mode doesn't exist :)

The only way to switch off a SB3 or transporter is to pull the power.
Pressing the power button just tells the server what screen to show,
brightness level and to stop playing. That is all. Power consumption
should be exactly the same. it is still receiving data to update the
screen and although there will be less load on the CPU, this will make a
negligible difference to power consumption.

I do the opposite. I leave my TP on all the time and use IR-Blaster to
turn my amplifier on/off when I want to play music. The amplifier uses
a lot more power than the TP. The TP will typically use about $3-5/year

You need to use your computer's ethernet address.
WOL works by broadcasting packets to all machines and the network card
itself identifies the packet as "that's for me" and powers on the
computer.

Re: [slim] Going green with a Transporter

2009-09-21 Thread SuperQ

Speaking of, how many kwh are people using for their homes, what % of
this goes to running music equipment.

Me and my SO use about 250kwh/month. The TP is about 2.6kwh/month
(1%).

My primary PC which I use for working from home, running squeezecenter,
etc uses about 80kwh/month (30%), but I need to re-measure this since I
did a few changes to it.

My fridge in my last apartment used about 60kwh/month (25%).

I need to go around and audit the power usage of my other stuff. I
suspect a large chunk of the power in my new apartment is lighting.
There are a number of halogen tube lights that are built-in to the walls
that I can't replace with CFL or other efficient lighting.
