Re: [slim] 7.4.1 rebuffering woes

2009-12-11 Thread DigitalMitch

Zoltan,

WHS was apparently optimised for 0.5G, but HP added some stuff.
I then added SBS and MusicIP hence need for upgrade. Didn't want to
repeat the exercise so went straight to max).

I'm sure that Linux based solutions would be better, but at the time,
the HP medismart seemed good for me, being ready built and Windows,
which I was comfortable with.

The Touch is driving SBS light, but no hints whether that code would
be available for other platforms (since it would conflict with Touch
hardware sales).

If I was choosing a new solution now, (or when I need to) I'd still be
looking for something beyond Touch for the extra server functionality
and some backup for the music files, as well as power and size.
(recognising HP itself is limited backup).

Price seems to be all over the shop at the moment. I got one from Amazon UK in
July for £119.99; last month they were £169.99; you say that yesterday they
were £30 more expensive than that; and now they're back down to £159.99. One
wonders whether anybody knows what's going on, let alone what they ought to be
doing about it

Really? Good Lord. I never realised. Five different prices in as many months
and that's just one sale. Amazing.

Forgive my naivety, but is it really a special offer to sell something for £40

2009-12-11 Thread cliveb

Amazon's pricing policy seems very weird. I get the impression that on
low-volume items, they drop the price a lot if they aren't selling
(presumably to try and clear out the inventory), but then if it starts
selling again the prices goes back up.

Example: I was wondering whether to buy the Babylon 5 Complete
Universe DVD set when it was about 90 quid. A few months later it was
down to about 65, so I snapped it up. Shortly after that it was back up
to about 120.

[slim] How do you add to the Music Source menu?

2009-12-11 Thread relen

This seems like a really silly question. Maybe my mind has gone blank or
something... but is there a way to add an entry by IP address to the
Settings - Music Source menu on an SB2/3?

I have an SB3 on my desk at work for background music. Normally it
talks to a server on my local network, and I mainly use it for Internet
Radio as it happens, as the local server library is small.

I have a serious library on my server at home. It's of course possible
to hold down the Left button on the remote, re-set-up the networking and
tell it the server is at my home server's IP address, but this is not
trivial.

It seems to me that where this should really appear is in the Music
Source menu. I would like to add my remote server to the menu so that I
can choose between SqueezeNetwork, the local server, and the remote one,
with just a few button-presses.

I can't see a way of entering an IP address to appear in the menu. Is
it possible?

Thanks for the reassurance Mitch. I am in fact running Ubuntu as my
server OS and like I said it seems to work fine for me at the moment. It
just worries me when I see suggestions that relatively high powered
hardware (compared to what I am using) might be to blame for poor SB
performance. It worries me that it is a sign that SBS is becoming more
resource hungry over time. I hope that that is something that Logitech
are keeping a check on.

my mp3-player is not connected to the Squeezbox Server. I want to fill
the mp3-player from a windows client pc that is connected to the
squeezebox server.

now my question: is there a software aviable for windows (like itunes)
that will acess the squeesebox-server and is able to copy selected music
(on the base of playlist or other mp3-tag selections) to my mp3-player?

Or perhaps there exists an plugin for itunes, so that itunes can use
the database of the squeezbox server.

Sorry to be late getting back to you. Thank you for spelling out your
abbreviations for the sake of a newbee. For what it's worth, I find the
same as you guys: the 192kbps stream has art, the 128 doesn't.

But otherwise, it's a mystery to me why the art should have disappeared
from a stream like this. I suppose whatever supplies it at the station
is broken, but odd that they don't fix it. Perhaps they don't know.

[slim] new radio -- are these known issues?

2009-12-11 Thread Owen Emry
Just took delivery of three radios, took one out of the box, and noticed the
following:

- The radio tries hard to make me create a mysqueezebox.com account, which I
don't plan to do, since these will get used on a LAN with no internet access
anyway.

- After switching tracks, I often get very noisy (scratchy) skipping for
several seconds. (All I'm trying to do is play my own music collection from
SBS running on a linux machine -- these tracks play fine on my SB3. You guys
do still test the Vorbis decoder, right?)

- When an alarm goes off, I get a loud, jarring ~250msec blast of sound
(perhaps a buffer emptying?) before the audio silences AND THEN fades in.

- The LCD doesn't seem to display Japanese/Chinese fonts at all.

Are these known issues, and is the radio still a work in progress? The FAQ
doesn't seem to cover any of the above -- just basic stuff like walking you
through the install process. I'm seriously considering returning them if this
is par for release quality software.

Thanks,
Owen

Re: [slim] Help - How do I remove the Wireless Card?

2009-12-11 Thread seanadams

Why are you removing the wireless card? I don't mean to offend but if
you need help figuring that out, you stand a pretty high chance of
breaking something while you're poking around in there. But don't let me
stop you...

You need to spread the plastic clips on each side (only about 1/16)
and the board should pop up. Newer SB3s may additionally have the card
secured by some double-sided sticky foam. It should peel away with
moderate force. Once it is free to tilt up by 45°, slide it out of the
connector. The antenna connectors should be removed by pulling straight
upward with tweezers.

Those are the current release versions of the server software and
player firmware, respectively.

When it tries to make you create a mysqueezebox.com account, I think
you can get out of it by holding the left arrow for a few seconds.

No scratching sound when switching tracks for me, but all my tracks are
FLAC or MP3, not Ogg.

I've been using the alarm for a few months and haven't experienced the
alarm problem you mention.

Can't speak to the Chinese and Japanese character sets issue.

Some people are having problems with the SB Radio, others are running
fine. I am mostly in the latter camp, even though it is with an early
pre-production version of the hardware.

Your server gets its server+ player firmware updates from the
internet.
Certain aspects of the Radio need Internet access.

The Radio is a new device and as with all new SB devices there are some
teething issues which require new sever updates (and firmware too).
That's why there is no CD in the box... like pretty much ALL hardware
these days!

These things are NOT toasters - no matter what it says on the box.

There are several fixes to radio issues in 7.4.2.

[slim] Retailer Warning

2009-12-11 Thread m1abrams

I have been looking for a Squeezbox Reciever lately and it seems few are
available. You can get a Duet no problem but few sell just the
receiver. Amazon has a 3rd party selling carring one right now (just 1
mind you) for $174 USD which is actually a bit high for this item. So I
went to get it even though I felt the price was a bit on the high side.
When I went through the checkout I noticed that the shipping on the item
for the cheapest UPS ground was $120! WTF this is to a US address.
Needless to say I did not order it.

The 3rd party selling at Amazon was The Price Pros.

[slim] Not a happy customer

2009-12-11 Thread jobb

I bought a Squeezebox package and after a lot of trying and installing I
seemed to have got everything working. Except for the pauses that
sometimes happen in certain songs. But that seems to happen to others
too. And of course the more serious problem that when I select an
Aerosmith song I get a Drifters song from from my loudspeakers. So, I
sent an email and asked how to get a refund. The product clearly is for
geeks who have time and like to figure out how stuff works. Support
pointed me to the store with the following text:

** Thank you for contacting Logitech Customer Care. I would like to
advise you to contact the shop where you purchase it or the point of
purchase then arrange for a refund. If you have any other concern
regarding your product, feel free to email us back. You can also visit
our website at ulr removed

[ Not a wrong answer. But no empathy either. ]

** I replied to the email with the following:
I am sorry to hear that.

** On that reply I received the following message:
Your recent incident update was from an email address not associated
with the incident. In an effort to maintain the security of information,
we cannot update the incident using this email address. If you are the
incident owner and your email address has changed, or you want to be
able to update the incident using this email account, please update your
contact information using the following link, then resubmit your
update.

[ I never used another email address ]

+++
Just thought I'd share this experience for anyone interested in buying.
If you are. I have one cheap.

Re: [slim] Not a happy customer

2009-12-11 Thread mparry

Hi Jobb,
I am sorry that you seem to have had a bad support experience. I am
unclear though as to whether you just want a refund or you wanted
support?
If you were looking for a refund then it is standard practice to return
the item to the store you brought it from.
As far as the email address I agree that the email support system can
have some problems for time to time. However I would also say that our
support team are some extremely passionate and helpful individuals whom
I bet can get you on the right track. If you need product support I
would be more than happy to put you in touch with one of them. Please
just let me now.

Re: [slim] What happened to the album art on Radio Paradise?

2009-12-11 Thread dpotts

I e-mailed them and got a quick reply. Thanks for the suggestion! They
confirm that the album art is being passed to their stream server, so
probably it's not another instance of the problem they had before that
you mention. But somehow it's not getting to us. I also tried the 64kbps
stream and a different url that RP gave me, and none of these has album
art. Neither does the stream you can listen to at RadioTime.com. Only
the 192kbps stream displays album art. At least Radio Paradise now knows
about the problem.

Re: [slim] Help - How do I remove the Wireless Card?

2009-12-11 Thread equation

Took it out. Switched the squeezebox on and... nothing. Same old
rebooting loop. POS. I expected it to last longer than my cheap
chinese mp3 player at least.

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2009-12-11 Thread local . bin

Is there a slight possibility that Net-UDAP works with a Squeezebox
Radio :-/?

Tiring entering my WPA2 code each time I have problems!

Thanks in advance

The Radio doesn't speak UDAP.

Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience, but maybe a bit premature to
start throwing POS comments around. If you posted more details as to
what is happening with your SB3, my guess is that the helpful members of
this community might have some ideas to help get you back on your feet.

Sean, great to see you popping up on these boards from time to time. I
didn't discover and join the Squeezebox family until the Duet (this
after wasting nearly $1000 trying to build what was essentially a
poor-man's Touch, and later scrapping it for parts.) I get the sense
that I missed out on some fun development times, but better to have
discovered SB late than never. Hope life is treating you well.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-12-11 Thread amey01

Long absence due to a house move - sorry.

I finally had a chance to run an extended session with 1.0b last night.
It's great (there are a few things I've mentioned previously that still
hold, but I won't repeat them here).

The main problem I'm having is with the database/cache. I keep clearing
and recreating it, but at some point down the list it all stuffs up and
incorrect albums are listed beneath the specific artists. No idea what's
going on!
