One other thing I'll note is that the forums here are MUCH more active
and supportive than the forums on the Sonos side - I benefited
tremendously from the help from users here while I was a Squeeze
products user. The community is a real asset for the Squeeze line.

As Squeeze products lineup is more technically appealing, it seems
reasonable that more of the Squeeze community would be willing to fiddle
and share. It's not that Sonos buyers couldn't mimic this behavior.
But almost by definition, it seems that the prototypical Sonos buyer
doesn't know as much about their product and, for the most part, doesn't
want to.

By the way, I would echo the comments of others in this thread who've
discussed upgrading their WAP's and / or antennas. After doing the same
I've had no problems with my Duet or Controller.

 Sorry for the confusion.

A few other users had that problem. I just added some code to rename

Re: [slim] M3u Playlist previous/next not updating song title/author?

2009-12-17 Thread JeffHart

This isn't related to the type of playlist, it's an .mp3 tag problem.
To get the description updated you need to populate the Artist and Title
tags at a minimum. There are many .mp3 tagging tools out there, I use
Mp3tag.

[slim] Sirius and Napster Not Working as Advertised

2009-12-17 Thread youngml2009

Hello. Let me preface my comments by saying that I love the Squeezebox
line. I have four of them (1 Duet, 1 Boom and 2 Radios) and feel that
they are wonderful devices.

That being said, I have a complaint with mysqueezebox.com's delivery of
the Sirius and Napster music services. At various times, playback of
these services will stop for no explicable reason. I understand that
numerous bugs for variations of these problems with Sirius and Napster
have been posted in bugzilla. However, I'm not sure how much emphasis
Logitech is placing on solving these problems. For example, with the
stop of playback for Sirius, this problem was first reported in March
2009 and yet it continues today. See
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11544. The target
milestone for fixing the Sirius bug is 8.0, which does not give me much
confidence that it will be fixed any time soon.

On the one hand, this may not seem like a big deal. If the stream
stops playing, just push play again, right? Just pushing play,
however, gets extremely annoying in the middle of a party, when you're
having dinner, or really when you're doing anything other than wanting
to just push play again.

In my view, Logitech advertises that these products work with Sirius
and Napster, but I don't see that these advertisements live up to their
promises because of this stopped-playback problem. I understand that
there will be bugs with any system, but it seems that these playback
problems with Sirius and Napster (and maybe other services) have been
known for some time.

Can we get any feedback from Logitech as to what steps will be taken to
deal with this issue?

Thanks.

Been following this thread...

It takes a LOT of work to get things to the everything just works
point with the Squeezebox Server. But once it's set up, I think you
really can just set it and forget it.

I think an area for Squeezebox Product management to look at is a quick
and easy server, possibly based on the Sheevaplug...

[slim] amplified speakers - Klipsch-XF-48-Icon-X?

2009-12-17 Thread markbelanger

I'm currently considering retiring my giant hurking cabinet and stack of
amp / pre-amp / sacd player / turntable (gasp!), and going the route of
amplified speakers. The Audioengine A5's are my current pick, but I see
the Klipsch-XF-48-Icon-X on sale (@ $400 each, but were $1250, and I'm a
sucker for a deal) They oddly pitch them as home theater (who does 5.1
without an amp/ rec'r?)

In either case, they would be the (stereo) sound for a squeezebox
classic (a slimdevices 3, actually) and replace the Dali bookshelves on
stands.

I realize the two aren't really comparable - the Klipsh are floor
standers, twice the price, etc. But if you have experience in this
arena, lemme know what you think - I'm sold on the A5's, but I'm not
sure if I'm up-sold on the Klipshes. Hoping to audition this weekend.

See the Touch.

(Though neither is really workable for ripping/encoding/tagging...
it's best in that case to use your regular PC/Mac/Linux/whatever box and
copy the files to the server machine... but, then, I think that's true
of Sonos, too.)

I've always believed there is a huge market for things like VortexBox,
though I'm not sure if Logitech really wants to get into that. It could
be very difficult since it's way out of their usual product line.
System Integrators should be doing exactly what VortexBox has/does...

Many people are now letting the DVD Player do the processing. They use
the RCA outputs on the back of the DVD Player to drive a stereo amp for
the mains and self powered speakers for the surrounds (of course the
subwoofer is powered). But one could actually use all powered speakers
if they wanted to.

My son uses a pair of AVI ADM9.1s with the subwoofer for the fronts, an
AE A5 for center channel, two AE A2 for rears with an Earthquake
Subwoofer on the LFE out. He uses the digital out to drive the ADM9.1
and RCAs to drive the rest. He can listen to CDs using the DVD player
coming over the ADM9.1s. DVD remote has a volume control on it.

I have not heard the Klipsh Speakers but they are floor standers so
they most likely have better base and of course they have more power
then the A5s. If you are going to use them as your main speakers and
have the room, I say spend the extra $400.

Interesting - it does make sense for home theater too, but seems an
easier win for stereo. I appreciate the advice - it's my inclination
re: bass as well. I'll post my thoughts on the Klipsch floor-standers'
sound after a listen. The A5's I can attest to - very nice. Inclined to
take your advice though - a little extra for maybe a lot more...

Re: [slim] VortexBox 1.0 what else does it need?

2009-12-17 Thread bernt

Hi!

I'm currently trying out Vortexbox and I'm planning to replace my
Ubuntu server with it.

A few suggestions.

Option to preview and edit the tags before the rips start.
Option to preview the cover art and download cover art only to the
current rip.

To make things more iPod friendly embedd the cover art on rips and flac
mirror.
Add the itunescompalition tag to various artists albums.

All my covers are named folder.jpg and I mainly use flac.

Sorry if this options already exists or if I have missunderstod how
things works.

Kind Regards
/Bernt
