Re: [slim] Mew Version of Transporter ?
First of all, sorry for not using search capability of the forum. I didn't know that this subject has been already discussed in a such a detail ... Anyway, a couple of comments from my side ... i really do not know whether buying SD by Logitech was a good strategic move or not - to judge that we need revenue and profit numbers, which we do not have. I do believe though that SD/Logitech has to defend their position on the market. I do not believe they can do that by simply leaving it. Although, that is also one possibility ... Transporter was and still partially is, very interesting product. It is not coming from the Hi End brand, but it was fairly priced, with a nice set of features. I believe that SD could improve Transporter market share by adding some new features (video, why not ?!) and also by improving the already existing ones (for example to implement 24/192 native reading). Fairly priced and with improved audio performance this can be a great contender. The other issue is "proprietary" server software, which may be an issue when it comes to integration with the products from other vendors. Although the most important one is supported (Apple iTunes) still there are not covered areas: DLNA, UPnP, ... I still believe though that Transporter is a unique product on the market with the great potential of beeing even better. -- DejanM DejanM's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19066 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73409 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Okay so at the most primal what are my/our wants: 1) FLAC 2) Mac PPC compatible 3) Edit tags 4) Import (via CD or download'd file) 5) Add artwork (less necessary) 6) FLAC !!! (It sounds a lot like iTunes minus FLAC support, but there are a host of things I don't want: a system resource hog, a bloated program, something that dials home to the Apple iTunes store when it thinks I want to buy something, tries to determine the audio volume on all my tracks - whether the option is selected or not, wants to manage my internet audio content, which wants to import and manage my video content, and most importantly ** can't do FLAC natively **.) -- kphinney -I like it, you may not. That was a fun day! Yep, I use itunes for synching my ipods/iphones and like it just fine as a music management tool in many ways. Easy to search, etc. (if only the web interface to SbS was half as easy to use in terms of showing libraries, sorting, creating smart playlists, etc Yes, I use dynamic playlists, custom browse, etc. etc., but none of this is as simple as the basic itunes model). Unfortunately, itunes doesn't do secure rips and/or have AccurateRip access. And I much prefer FLAC files for use on all my SqueezeBoxes. I have no need for lossless on my IPOD, and the SB environment seems to work much better with FLAC files as compared with Apple Lossless. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73445 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hard to imagine, but it's been three years and two OSs since we guessed in that post that Apple would include FLAC support. They haven't. I'm aware that you can install codex for QT which allow FLAC support in iTunes, but I'd rather replace iTunes instead. I'm more frustrated today at iTunes than I've ever been. I want a simple front end to import, add art work, and manage tags. Has anyone ran across anything they like? I've used both Cog (feature lacking) and Play (from the makers of Max) but am still open to something ne aw. Oh - I really like Songbird, but the Mac being used as a server is PPC not Intel so I can't use that. Only if that separate harddrive is a NAS (which is like a mini-computer combined with a harddrive) and the NAS is running it's own copy of SqueezeboxServer. There are NAS units that do this (ReadyNAS, etc.). Bottom line, to stream music, there must be something ON that is running the SbS software. Yes, the solution with a wired switch should work fine. As prices are very low I would recommend a Gigabit Switch with minimum 5 or 8 ports. Re: [slim] Wired network for Transporter & Ready NAS Duo
I presume by your comments you already have a wireless router as your home network. If yes, then a simple wired switch should work fine. >From one of your routers LAN ports just run a cable to the Switch, then as many cables from the switch to your devices. One thing to be careful of is that there are Switches and Hub/Switch combos. A simple Switch has no designated "input" port for the cable coming from your router. A Hub has such a designated "input" port. A Hub can be used as a simple Switch by just not using this "input" port. I ran into the Hub issue long ago giving me very erratic connection & DNS issues with several devices. Not using the "input" port on my Hub/Switch (now making it a Switch) solved all my connection issues and has worked flawlessly ever since. A word of advice: Buy a bigger Switch than you think you currently need. You may just need a simple 4 port Switch right now, but going to a 6 port or 8 port Switch would not cost that much more. More room to grow and keep in mind that one of the Switch's ports will be needed for the input cable. Hope this helps. :) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73378 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
