I understand your point. But I still hope that even if it came to that
point, that there would be enough time to manage a transition which
doesn't require the kind of hacks to pull information to a new system.

That's what the corporate support would want to have indeed. But as long
as they can't provide the same level of service as in these forums, it
doesn't make sense to pull anything down.

As for the wiki: our biggest issue there probably is degrading quality.
While it's been a resource for our own support, they now hesitate to use
it, as there's a lot of outdated information. The community probably could
help the wiki to survive by helping identify articles which need
update/replacement. We could add some kind of header as wikipedia often
does with articles which need some work. Tell the visitor: "this is
outdated information and needs work - use it at your own risk".

While we have good numbers for the forums (visitors, postings etc.)
helping us prove the importance of that system, we don't have this data
for the wiki. It's therefore even more important wiki provides a good
level of quality.

IMHO nothing changes as quickly in this organization as the personnel. We
currently see changes in this area which look promising.

So is mine :-).

Re: [slim] www.slimdevices.com gone?

2010-05-30 Thread Muele

I have two problems:
1. from the Logitech.dk/com site I am unable to find these forums. At
some point (a few months ago) I found "another" squeezebox forum.
Probably it was just a subforum under logitech's main forum. But I'm
not even able to browse to that now. The link may exist, but I can find
it, even when I know what I am looking for.

2. I can't find the beta software. Going through logitechsqueezebox.com
you can through a step where you could go to the beta-stuff, including
changelog etc. That step is not there when coming through
logitech.dk/com

Re: [slim] Can we make a music scheduler?

2010-05-30 Thread erland

I wonder if it would be possible to use the alarm handling to solve
this.

If you only want a simple scheduling, starting it at a specified time
and always play for 2 hours, it should work to setup an alarm and set
the "Alarm Timeout (in minutes)" parameter to 120 minutes.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to set different timeouts
for different alarms.

If you want more advanced scheduler possibilities, you probably need to
use one of the suggestions from Michael.

Note, if you are using Squeezebox Touch or Radio, you probably don't
want to use the alarm functionality because those devices have a
fallback alarm that's triggered now and then when there is a short
communication problem with the server or when the clocks aren't
completely synchronized.

Re: [slim] Can we make a music scheduler?

2010-05-30 Thread Michael Herger
There are several approaches to doing this:

- you could write a SBS plugin to do this
- use a calendar application which can launch scripts when events trigger.
Such a script could talk to SBS to start/stop playback etc.
- write your own scheduler application talking to SBS

Re: [slim] Crossfader/Zero gaps between songs

2010-05-30 Thread lrossouw

There is a crossfade option on the webui. If you are running the server
software (playing music files stored on your pc) go to the pc running
this software and browse to http://localhost:9000/
Once there on the bottom right go to settings \ player \ audio. You
need to set it for all players.

You should be able to set your crossfade seettings there. Put it on
smart cross fade will cross fade songs from different albums but will
keep the gaps as per the original on songs from the same album.

This is preferable if you play songs from live albums or DJ mixes as in
these the music continues smoothly from one track to the next. With
smartfade the original timings should be fine if the tracks were ripped
correctly.

The music played, but played a bit fast/high pitched.

Is there anything I can do on the squeezeslave side to fix this? If
not, do you think that anything could be done on the Linux side to slow
it down?

[slim] Longtime user, new problem that I can't solve...

2010-05-30 Thread jsw4195

First off, apologies if this is covered (fearful that this may have been
exhaustively covered and I just didn't find the threads?) but I HAVE
been searching up down and backwards for posts here and elsewhere on
the web...

I've got an SB3 and a Boom running wireless off a Zyxel router. I've
had both for over a year, and had an earlier SB before that, and never
had THIS problem:

Every morning , at 9:01am, my players lose their Now Playing list, goes
blank. By the time I'm back up and running the top of the hour NPR
newscast on kcrw is over and done...

I was guessing this was static IP/DHCP setting issue? Timing out after
1440 minutes etc? Trying it both ways now (static, dynamic) doesn't
seem to make any difference. The weirdness is nothing changed in my
setup to bring this about.

Technically I'm pretty modest, but not totally green either. And like I
said, this setup worked for over a year with no troubles til fairly
recently. It's driving me absolutely crazy, would greatly GREATLY
appreciate any pointers.

thx

john

[slim] Playlists

2010-05-30 Thread spile

As a recent SB Touch owner I've been very happy with things generally
but I appear to have hit a bit of a stumbling block.

Basically I thought it was a good idea to make life eay for my wife to
find her own music from the Touch menu.
A look at the guide came up with two possibilities - Favourites or
Playlists.
Playlists seemed the more flexible solution so using the Touch screen
and remote I created a custom playlist of my wife's CDs.
Problem was that I noticed that for some strange reason I had a couple
of hundred playlists already present! I don't know how they got there -
it appears that my music collection had .cue, .m3u and .m3u8 files in
them and that squeeze server automatically added them to my playlists.
Deleting them wasn't easy either I tried searching for the files
direcly off the server and then deleting them but for some reason they
remained in the memory of the sb server. Even forcing the server to
rescan the playlists didn't work. In the end I had to manaully delete
them using the web front end to the SB server. A very tedious process -
why is there there not east way to delete a number of unwanted
playlists.
Even after doing all this, I don't have an ideal solution - when you go
into Now Playing > Playlists > Name the tracks not the albums are
listed.
It seems that maybe playlists are not the ideal way for my wife to find
her albums.
Any ideas?

If you buy a "Universal" Remote (eg one of the "One for All" multi
device remotes) and configure it as if for a JVC DVD player then that
will work - you have to also enable this in the Squeezecenter server
settings menu. The Logitech "Harmony" remotes also have full, native
support for SB2/3.

The new "Touch" remotes will also reportedly work, although they've
lost a few of the shortcut keys present on the older remotes.

Michael, I just think some of us are a bit worried about how committed
Logitech management are regarding these community sites (forum and
wiki). As you suggests, the bugzilla and svn repossitory are of course
going to remain, but they could be closed for community access. Chris
has already earlier mentioned that the idea of closing bugzilla has
been discussed within Logitech.

I'm mostly worried about the forum and wiki, especially if something
happens with the servers unintentionally and someone decides that it's
not cost effective to fix the problem. The fact that there doesn't seem
to be any link to them from the official Logitech pages indicates to me
that the commitment to keep these pages available in the future isn't
too high. It kind of seems like Logitech might want to direct new users
to http://forums.logitech.com instead. It could of course also just be
that all the links haven't been added yet.

I understand that you and the other developers will try to do
everything you can to avoid that anything happens with these sites, I'm
just worried that no one from Logitech management seems to care, at
least they don't show that they care in the public.

Yes, I understand that Logitech is a big corporation and it might be
unreasonable that the management spend time announcing their strategy
regarding the community, but it still worries me a bit. If your
management would be a little visible on these forums, all these worries
and rumors could be easily avoided.

I think neither me or Peter is about to panic yet, so far we are just
thinking about what options we have to make 100% sure that the valuable
information on the forums and wiki will be available in the future even
if Logitech decides to decrease their involvement in the community.

It should be said, that I've no indication that Logitech is about to
decrease their involvement in the community besides the fact that there
are less Logitech resources posting in the forum today than a year ago.
I understand that the reason for this is mainly(only?) caused by the
fact that their are less Logitech employees working with Squeezebox
today than a year ago.

My hope is that all our worries are completely unnecessary.

[slim] Notesymbol

2010-05-30 Thread canadianlistener

This morning when I turned on my squeezebox classic the screen shows the
station I am listening to (like normal)and it scrolls across the screen.
But now, beside it it says NOTESYMBOL. Anyone know what this is all
about. The squeezebox still works normal, just has this.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2010-05-30 Thread afro

DSBridge only allows one stream at a time. So you can't sync multiple
boxes, as far as I know.

That's one reason for needing the noscan flag.

No, but I could imagine a manager deciding that only Logitech staff
would be allowed to access/log in to those sites. Hopefully that won't
happen. Hopefully nobody will seek to have gmane destroy their archive,
etc. But I could imagine senior Logitech staff thinking the old SD sites
weren't cost effective & shutting them down. Many folks have pointed out
the deficiencies of the reviews of Touch. I don't think I saw any
reviews that talked about the availability of applets and SBS plugins.
This suggests that the media kit doesn't mention them.
Logitechsqueezebox.com linked to info about using and building
extensions, and now it's gone. I don't think it's at all unreasonable
to wonder if Logitech senior staff are considering shutting/locking
down these old SD-branded sites, and to make some effort to try to
minimize the affect of such a (possible, hopefully unlikely) action. Or
similar fates like this forums server dying and Logitech deciding not to
replace it even if y'all do have good data backups. I really hope your
optimism is right, especially as I'm unlikely to do anything for a few
days (at least!). :-)

The problem has reoccurred again, and lately it has been almost
impossible to recover it. Now I have given up and skipped running
through the SB server. When I run over mysqueezebox.com with the
favourite there (/#slim:noscan=1) it works perfectly, except that I do
not get the cover image displayed. I can live with that though.

But I have one limitation when running via mysqueezebox.com: when I try
to synchronize my two receivers, either one of them is silent or both of
them. Is it related to the #slim:noscan=1 switch? Does anybody know a
workaround?
(When I synchronize internet radio via mysqueezebox.com I get sound
from both receivers.)

/Erik

Hi Mark,

Are you sure you do not even have Windows Defender, which is the
standard firewall in my Vista machine at least. I had to add port 8124
there in order to get DSBridge to work. Furthermore, if you run via the
SB Sever, then it seems you need to have it running on the same machine
as you play Spotify. In case you want to run on another machine, turn
off SB Server and connect to mysqueezebox.com instead and define the
Spotify favourite there instead, as has been described in this thread
before. My definition as an example:
http://192.168.1.4:8124/#slim:noscan=1

[slim] Fixed Volume Causes Loud Sound when Music is Paused etc.

2010-05-30 Thread vagskal

A strange issue suddenly occurred today:

If I pause the music on one of my SB3 (wired) or if I switch that SBS
off, a loud sound, a tone, is heard. If that player is synced to
another player (SBR wirelss), the tone is heard also with that player.

The SB3 in question has the option to use fixed (100%) volume set and
is connected to the amp via an optical cable. The synced SBR has
adjustable volume and is connected to its amp via rca cables.

If I set the volume to be adjustable on the SB3 in question (but keep
the volume at 100%) the issue is gone; no tone is heard.

I have another SB3 (wireless, connected to its pre amp via optical
cable) and just to test I set the volume to fixed for that player, but
the issue did not occur.

I use latest SBS 7.5.1 (r30836) on Win XP.

Any ideas what is suddenly wrong and what to do about it?

If I have to keep the volume adjustable but remember to always set it
to 100%, will the output (via optical cable) to the amp/dac still be
bit perfect?

First you can check it with a digital camera. You should see the
flashing IR LED when you have a look thru a digital camera. Test first
with a known good remote.

That's the difference between a hub and a switch. A hub connects
physically connected devices on a shared medium and collision domain. A
switch establishes a point to point connection between physically
connected devices and uses dedicated RX/TX pairs - no paket collisions.
It uses a fast switch engine and buffers.
