Softsqueeze was the original Java client and it hasn't changed since the time you had it working - all the menus and functionality are the same. As Softsqueeze is no longer bundled in with SBS, it had to be re-packaged as a plugin but once installed it is the same as the originally bundled Softsqueeze. You need to go into the Softsqueeze preference to define the IP address of the server you wish to use. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81347 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Really Fun To Learn The Savoy Style Dance
Lindy Hop is a dance style that evolved during the 1920s in Harlem, New York. This dance form fits in the genre of swing dance. It also happens to be one of the many partner dances that are still popular. The steps of this dance style were taken from the Tap and Charleston. This was the first dance form that broke all race barriers between the whites and blacks. Spontaneity and wildness is the key features of this dance form. *'Lindy Hop Dance NYC' (http://www.youshouldbedancing.net/)* is another name given to New Yorks very own swing dance. The Savoy Ballroom in New York City gave this dance the perfect ground for these dancers to showcase their talent. This ballroom went on to become the ruler of swing. It also perfected this dance form in a great way by fine tuning it steps. The bouncer of the Savoy Ballroom, Herbert White went on to form a group Whiteys Lindy Hoppers, which consisted of the best Lindy Hop dancers who performed at the ballroom. This troupe went on to perform this beautiful dance in movies such as Hellzapoppin and A Day at the Races. This dance was also performed on the beats of Swing music. Every passing day, new steps were introduced depending on the changing fashion. The Jitterbug is the ideal example of this reinvention. This dance is so close to the Lindy dance style that it might be really difficult to differentiate between both the styles. Although, names changed over the years, but, the Lindy Hop is still known to be the Savoy style of dance. -- ESTES21 ESTES21's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39966 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81349 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Stream music over internet? (classic)
OK I have a classic squeezebox, pretty sure it is the version before the duet. I used to be able to login to the squeezeserver from the internet (using dns, port forwarding etc) and start the old java client from any computer on the internet. About a year back I tried to update the software and found the java player was no longer included. I tried some of the 3rd party software players, like softsqueeze and squeeze play but could never get them working right. I couldn't find a way to enter a server address I think (Cause it was looking for a local media server???) Is there a way to stream music across the internet? I can easily handle the internet dns, port forwarding etc. Have softqueeze and squeeze play improved a whole lot (I would hope so...), to allow this? This was probably the best feature my girlfriend and I liked, streaming our music at work from home without having the load/reload ipods etc... Thanks for the help... oh... I read that the new touch includes squeezecenter, do you think this would work? Would love to get the server software off my htpc... -- dandirk dandirk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39964 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81347 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

First off, I love Squeeze Commander, I was using iPeng and they both work great! Now that I am primarily using an android phone, though, I have been dying, DYING, for SqueezePlay on android. I have tried subsonic but I don't like have multiple servers running at once, though to be honest, the machine I'm using for a server (2.53 duo core Mac Mini w/ 4gigs ram connected to hardware switch) can handle it. Re: [slim] MusicIp/SugarCube settings
Hi Brad, Few points in no particular order; 1) Style 114, Variety 3 Is what I use with a library of 12k but there is no right or wrong answer as it will vary to taste, what tracks you have etc 2) Install Trackstat and then use the Trackstat Integration settings on the SugarCube page, eg. Block Track Playcounts Greater Than X, Block Track if Played Recently. 3) SugarCube settings are discrete, so whatever changes you make anywhere else in MusicIP (including the offical MusicIP plugin) will have no impact. When you change the SugarCube settings they are dynamic and will be active from the next track change. 4) Use SugarCube directly (not via DynamicPlaylist) it will use a fuller compliment of algorithms. This will hopefully improve things for you. Technically if you want a random mix you should use the random mix plugin the idea with MusicIP is that its not random ;) Regards -- cparker www.spicefly.com - Spicefly SugarCube - Taking Squeezebox and MusicIP to the next level. i don't like any of the interfaces, webui, sp, sbc, even ipeng. there is nothing out there simple yet powerful, ie. elegant. (the sbc is amazing, and ipeng is very good too, but both have drawbacks, and some of them are beyond their individual ability to do anything about, b/c of the backend) the reason i use SBS is primarily b/c it handles the audio as well as it can be handled. i consider the interfaces an unfortunate, but sadly necessary evil. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbrec & ipeng (parent's home) - sbs 7.5.2b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - p4(ht) 3.2ghz, 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 - 43k+ mp3 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is
Frankly, the only reason I even use Squeezeplay is because Squeezeslave causes my MacBook Pro to take an extra 20 to 30 seconds to go to sleep. Even though I have multiple Squeezeboxes, I also have a baby in the house, so I have to listen to music tied to headphones when I'm tied to my computer working. Using the computer itself for the audio source aids in mobility. Squeezeplay is different from other software solutions precisely because of SBS. Unlike other solutions, it makes for a really nice UI using the web interface and/or a program like iPeng. This is still a geeky solution and I agree, it's not the primary reason a typical consumer wouldn't pick up a SB. It takes only a little bit less setup than a real player. ;) And Squeezeplay is also sufficiently buggy that it would probably piss some people off - after some number of tracks, the Web UI and the SP UI itself will no longer show the actual track being played, but one previous in the playlist. Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is
i don't agree that the poster whose friend does everything for free is lost money to logitech. thats the wrong way to look at it from a business pov. why? b/c logitech needed to develop all that software anyway, for the actual hardware customers it did have. making it available for free actually INCREASES hardware sales, it doesn't decrease sales. it increases exposure, and i'd bet a lot of people who try, eventually go on to buy. even if u believe more people don't buy then eventually do, whatever the numbers are, you get more sales total! the '20 persons into digital audio' scenario: 1. NO FREE SOFTWARE: 10 people buy without trying. 10 more people can't try and don't buy, end of story. (and since they couldn't try first, maybe some return hating it, costing logitech money) 2. FREE SOFTWARE: 10 people buy, (and maybe they tried first, maybe not) 3 people don't try, don't buy however 7 people try, and of those some use indefinitely, (your friend); and over time, some buy, lets say 3 of the 7 as of a given date. so: the free scenario gets you 3 more sales than the non free one, and there is no reason to believe net sales are hurt by the free scenario since customers could return stuff if they didn't like it in either case. the caveat of course is that the free scenario will turn potential customers off b/c they hate the software/paradigm, which i am sure has happened, but that only saves logitech from a costly return after the fact in a non-free scenario, so its good for logitech ultimately. the larger point is that with something like this, allowing people to use it, even only in part, should net more sales than not allowing them to do so. if your friends financial status were to change, i'd be expecting he'd buy something. having said that, i do agree that its odd to me, considering that they have SP, that they haven't developed apps for iphones and smart devices and so on. that truly is a huge missed opportunity and guys like pippin were very smart to move quick into the void. the SBC is amazing imo, but who would pay $299 for it when for $9 you can ipeng? there is no doubt imo, that logitech did not properly leverage the asset of SP in the smart devices category. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbrec & ipeng (parent's home) - sbs 7.5.2b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - p4(ht) 3.2ghz, 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 - 43k+ mp3 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Pretend you didn't know about > this forum and now go to what you might find as the official Logitech > page about Squeezbox and try to find this forum. Good luck. I generally agree with your points. But with regard to squeezeplay as a software player, I can do the same thing you indicated with itunes, foobar2000, winamp, or any number of other "free" players running on a computer. Pre-squeezebox days, my system was Laptop w/USB drive >S/PDIF coax out > Benchmark DAC I > audio input to preamp. And my player on the laptop was foobar2000. I don't think many people really want SB because of SbS. Frankly, the SbS software is at the top of the list of things I'm not fond of. I much preferred my foobar2000 (or even itunes!) in terms of library management. But I agree, Logitech makes it very hard for a customer to find its products and then even to clearly describe what they do (in terms that the average consumer can figure out). My brother is a savvy guy, but he could never understand the point of SB system until I showed him exactly how it worked in my home. Now he has a touch and a boom. In some ways, the fact that too many consumers think the SB player is simply a substitute for a free software player on a computer is part of the marketing problem. Sonos does a better job and part of the difference is that they do push the idea of a SYSTEM for network music playback. Squeezebox still comes off as too much of a bunch of standalone parts. Heck, half the new posters on this site have yet to figure out the difference between mysb.com and running SbS. Re: [slim] Which NAS?
I have a Netgear ReadyNas DUO and I find the performance of SC to be quite disappointing. It can play music, but a lot of operations are just slow. My 8 year old PC (Pentium4 2.2ghz system) runs SC really fast and I would be very happy if the NAS can perform at this level. I don't have a large music collection, about 30G of flacs/mp3s. Reading this thread, I am curious about the performance of the Synology and the small form factor PCs such as fit-pc and vortexbox comparing to the ReadyNas Duo. Amazon is currently selling the fit-pc (older model?) for $199. I am wondering whether it's an adequate system to run SC. I am really intrigued by the 6 watt power usage (my computer in OFF mode consumes 6 watts!). How does the fit-pc, synology, and vortex compare with the a standard P4-2.26 system (single-core, no HT)? -- wildgoose wildgoose's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23501 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80747 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
I haven't read the entire thread, so I apologize if this has been suggested: please allow your app to rotate somehow to portrait mode on the iPad. Your app is really the only one I have that forces me to hold the iPad in landscape, and it just feels unnatural to me. [slim] MusicIp/SugarCube settings
Ive been looking a bit at the songs that have been genergated through the Dynamic Playlists>Sugarcube - and have noticed that they are, well, quite often not that random. I have quite a large library (21000 songs) and have noticed that after a while Sugarcube is picking the same songs in the same order. Also it seems to favour songs with a similar sort of playcount. For example the last 8 songs played have a playcount of 7/7/8/7/9/7/7/8 - and yesterday when I looked it was the same - favouring songs with a playcount of 7 or 8. To put this into context 75% of songs have a playcount of 5 or less - but Sugarcube hardly ever seems to pick these. I am currently uising the following for Sugarcube How much Mix Style - 80 How much Mix Variety - 5 Mix by Song or Album - Song Mix Type - None So ... basically .. my question is what are the recomended settings for Sugarcube to get a nice random selection ? Also which settings out of MusicIp and SugarCube are used ? Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is
Fourth .. I use it only as an additional controller which make the SB-system so much more convenient = using the Duet Controller in the kitchen, using SB Touch in our bedroom and in the living room I can use my laptop on a receiver and on all I can control all 3 SBoxes. If I didn't have Squeezeplay on my laptop I wouldn't use the SBoxes half as much. I would never play any music via PCs with crappy soundcards. -- Milesse Milesse's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30898 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There have been periods where SqueezePlay completely breaks and won't even compile for desktop use because of a change made for the hardware players (granted this hasn't happened in a long time). This has persisted until someone sat down and fixed things to let it compile and work on the desktop again. It's primary purpose is as a development and testing tool rather than being a software player. -- funkstar '[project log] funkstars digital lifestyle' (http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-lifestyle/179882-project-log-funkstars-digital-lifestyle.html) - 'hexus.community' (http://forums.hexus.net/) *in use:* *1*x touch, *1*x boom, *2*x sb3, *1*x controller *in a box:* *1*x radio, *1*x (beta) controller, *1*x receiver, *1*x sb2 wired (silver), *1*x sb (black), *1*x slimp3 (with rear shield) if you have any others, let me know, i'm interested!! funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Where are your CDs?
CDs are currently stored in three large cardboard boxes in the basement. Not having access to a physical object representing an album is a bit of a nostalgic loss. There's something so visceral about browsing through a shelf of disks, like old books. If I was super adventurous, I'd put together a very handsome shelving unit to hold them all in a room upstairs - with a unique RFID inserted into each jewel case. Then a small RFID reader disguised in a piece of furniture near the stereo (possibly a couple of others embedded in the walls) all wired to the server. Pick up a jewel case and swipe it in front of the reader to start it playing on the Squeezebox in that zone. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

True, it is a player. But it doesn't have the most important aspects of the players. First, it requires that your computer be connected directly to your stereo system (rather than being in the basement, back room closet, etc.). Second, it is using the soundcard of your computer (which could be very good or very crappy, and depending on your operating system may or not produce bit-perfect outputcf. windows XP and conversion from 44.1 to 48). Third, it doesn't have the same rock solid synching capabilities. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is
You don't need a Squeezebox when you have Squeezeplay. It's rather a conflict of interest when you're trying to sell hardware players. What I'm surprised at is that no one at Logitech has pushed through a version that doesn't play, but only controls, for the iPhone and iPad. Now that's a big missed opportunity. -- MelonMonkey Bruno *'Twisted Melon - External Wired IR Blasters' (http://twistedmelon.com/shop/?show=bug1)* MelonMonkey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8466 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Need a 4-channel amp recommendation
well, behind the wall I've got like 30cm x 30cm x 10-15cm (12"x12"x 4-6"). I might put it into the ceiling and there I would have a bit more space. The Audiosource one could work in the ceiling but they don't sell it in Europe, I doubt they have a 220V version and I don't want to go with choppy power converters. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81307 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
