Seagate Momentus 500Gb 7200rpm HDD from www.novatech.co.uk. Total cost
 was around £260.

I will add another HDD and I'll need to get the extra mounting bracket
 from mini-itx.

I'm now just waiting for the USB keyboard to arrive before I can start
getting it up and running. I did decide to go for an external USB
DVDrom too as I thought it could be used for ripping CDs or DVDs
 straight to the unit.

This DIY PC will be always on and connected directly to my router. From
what I've read and been advised, Vortexbox and Squeezebox Server will be
accessed via a web browser on my main PC.

Nice one, thanks, I selected the 60w power supply but will ask their
advice if 80w is more suitable. I also intend to plunge for a 500gb
drive as this will be plenty for now but as you say the case is in
theory able to accommodate 2 hard disks with the extra mounting plate.

I rip with dbpoweramp at the mo and intend doing so but then direct the
ripped files to be sent the drive on the mini pc via the
router...hopefully!

Are you sure you've configured the Wake-On-LAN correctly in your
Ethernet card via the BIOS?

It should only come out of sleep in response to the 'magic packet', not
any traffic.

Re: [slim] Squeezeslave stops playing after changing tracks

2010-09-04 Thread ralphy

When I first read your post I thought you might be using an older
version which has a similiar issue but 0.9-133 should work okay with
7.5.1.

I've been able to reproduce your problem on one linux system, but on
another it operates normally.

I'm currently working on fixing the issue, but won't likely have
anything to test for a week or two.

In the mean time you could try the latest development version from
'here'

I don't expect it to fix the problem but want to be sure. Please try
it out and report back.

Thanks,

Re: [slim] Basic Squeezbox Facts.....?

2010-09-04 Thread loosetooth

Okay well lets be clear. I am not talking about the buying of new CDs
and turning them into FLAC and selling the originals on... it is a bit
of a hassle. From now I will buy FLACs from Napster or some such
alternative

What we are talking about is the turning my present CDs (from the last
20 years) into FLACs and selling them.

Is it illegal? Probably. But then it is legal to hang a Welshman in
Worcester if you find him within the old walls and it is after
midnight not all law is particularly sensible or adherred to.

I feel no moral compunction to adhere to the law of destroying
Radiohead's OK Computer after I have changed into a FLAC... I will
sell it for £2-4 at a carboot and if that makes me a criminal then so
be it.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Should the new Looks be implemented ... and when ?

- Yummy Yummy - go for the new looks and delay playlist management
  for two weeks
- Please do playlist management first and then go for the new look
- I like the old style - please give us more new feature and leave
  the looks

why people insist on the small cover browse options? Is there a
performance reason? I would imagine with the iPad's large screen estate
difference browsing experiences would crop out, but all current
implementations remind me existing iphone GUIs.

Quoting myself!! Realise that for a 1GHz+ board 80W is recommended

Looks like we're doing something very similar.

I ripped most of my CDs quite some time ago now and put them onto a WD
My Book external HDD.
Then I bought the Squeezebox Duet but found that it was a pain having
to turn on the PC whenever I wanted to listen to music. Also,
Squeezebox Server does affect the performance of my PC if I'm doing
others things and listening to music at the same time.
Hopefully the mini PC will sort out those issues.

Re: [slim] Apple's Airplay coming soon...

2010-09-04 Thread mortslim

This is going to be a major challlenge to Logitech Squeeze devices.

I suggest that Logitech meet this challenge by updating the firmware in
all their Squeeze devices to add the Apple's AirPlay feature.

This way, the Squeeze devices have the best of both worlds - they keep
their existing infrastructure and add to it.

I don't know how much of a thread it will be to the SB ecosystem, but
Apple's solutions are usually rather well designed and easy to use.
They also have enticed one of the better known consumer amp makers (the
marantz/denon group) to eventually offer products that support it.

[slim] Music pauses at random points and then restarts

2010-09-04 Thread nathan_h

Several different threads on this topic, mostly in the unix areas, make
me think I'm not alone. But the key solution, disabling virus
scanning, hasn't solved this problem for me.

Are there any plug ins known to cause this kind of problem?

If you look how long it takes to download even the small coverart - how
long do you think it will take to download big coverarts (in a way that
could be browsed fast).
Yes - coverart might be cached -but how far will you go regarding the
memory of the iPad ?

Re: [slim] Squeezeslave stops playing after changing tracks

2010-09-04 Thread nickpierpoint

I've downloaded and tried the latest development build but not with any
great success I'm afraid. The playback only lasts for a few seconds
before stalling and the sound is very 'juddery' throughout.

I've attached the debug log created with the following command:

./squeezeslave-lnx26-0.9-173 --retry --keepalive 10 --debuglog
./squeezeslave.log -dall --display

Hopefully a false postive!

Thanks again for your help.
