Fortunately, the next version will be a bit more intuitive, because you
can use Drag-And-Drop to change the player's music source and synching.

Maybe Andy can clarify exactly what bitrates we get from the various

Re: [slim] SB3 issues

2011-02-09 Thread toby10

Kinda sounds like a possible IP conflict where your SB3 and another
device are trying to use the same IP.
Try a network reboot, unplug router, turn off computer, unplug SB3.
Now bring them back up in that same order, waiting for each to
completely boot up before proceeding to the next device.
Start up SBS server before plugging SB3 back in.

If that doesn't solve it I'd check the IP of every device on your
network for possible duplicates.

Re: [slim] Seeking High Bitrate Music Streaming Service

2011-02-09 Thread jeffwdc

After learning that MOG wasn't supported on SB, I resigned myself to
accepting 128K streams. The fidelity isn't great, but at least I
could build a personal catalog of music. I listened to Pandora,
Slacker, and Last.FM over several months. I settled on Last.FM
because they have a large catalog and I like their user interface.
But, yesterday Last.FM announced they will begin charging $3 per
month for SB and will not increasing the bitrate. I thought, if
I have to pay, I might as well get a better bitrate.

Goals
1) Internet radio & music discovery service that allows songs to be
liked or disliked. Creates personal station that gets better as
more songs are voted on.
2) Get highest bitrate.
3) Get a large catalog of songs.
4) Allows multiple custom stations per user account (e.g. Jazz station,

Lite Rock station, etc.)
5) Would be nice to store a few hundred songs on MP3 player.
6) Not concerned about Smart Phone support.

This table from CNet is helpful, but I can't determine how current the
information is. http://www.cnet.com/1990-7899_1-6396943-1.html

Please see attched jpeg for a comparison table from Details Magazine.

At this link, a Rhapsody employee says it streams at only 128K.
http://forum.rhapsody.com/rhapsody/topics/streaming_bitrate_question_client_and_com?from_gsfn=true

Please see my table attached below the one from Details magazine. It
shows only the option for the highest quality stream on a SB. Last.FM
is currently free, but will begin charging $3/Month for SB. Spotify is
not available in the US.

I'm really attracted to MOG's 320K stream, large cataglog, and they
have a great user interface. It looks like I'll have to use my laptop
as a controller and the SB WAV plugin to stream to the SB player. I
got the WAV plugin working last night.

[slim] SB3 issues

2011-02-09 Thread murphyk

I've had a squeezebox 3 in my kitchen for the past 3 years. It's always
worked flawlessly until last week. But it's now properly messing
about

It seems to be OK, all menus work fine. Signal appears to be in the mid
50's. And when I select an album, the first track begins as you would
expect. However, the remote becomes unrepsonsive and won't go through
any of the menus. The music continues to stream with no issues at this
stage, but the display says it's connecting to the wireless network. It
does so. Although the remote is still unresponsive. And repeatedly says
connecting to the wireless network. But irrespective of what album I
have originally selected, the SB finished the first track, and then
goes silent. As soon as the first track ends, i get the message that it
can't find the next track.

I can then use the remote again, select another album, and we go
through the same rigmorole again. What is going on? Has anyone else had
a similar problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it??? It's now
effectively unusable.

I know. But SlimProto (the Squeezebox protocol) sends the port number
to be used on various occasions and it always uses the server port.
We could override this on the player side but this would mean ruling
through various layers of control and sounds like trouble. It's just
too many things that can go wrong with that.

It's how the Squeezebox System currently works, SBs wont work with the
redirection either.

This behavior doesn't exist with the other apps. It might ask once when
I launch an app, and Google Maps has a habit of having the wifi menu pop
up as I'm driving, but its a different situation as it is detecting a
different network. This is the same network over and over again, and
occurs almost every time I select anything from an iPeng screen.

I had set it up with 3483 and 9000 forwarded, both TCP and UDP, so I
know that wasn't the cause of my other issues. I was just wondering if
I could change the external address of those ports, and use my router
to map them to 3483 & 9000. I am able to do this with other server type
apps without issue.

I know the communication behavior can be improved and that's actually

You need to forward port 3483, both TCP and UDP and the UI port needs
to be the same externally as internally. The latter is a SlimProto
thing, your SB won't work otherwise, too.
It could be avoided but then you have to make it just too dependent on

I've made use of the playback feature on the SBC and I'm surprised by
your assessment. Granted, I haven't used the most current FW since I'm
still on 7.5.0. My headphones are a pair for Grado SR-225s. I found
that I could hear some background noise on the controller during
quieter passages; on the iPod Touch (64 GB 3G running current iOS) I've
never encountered that, either with mp3s loaded on it or FLACS played
through squeezecast/iPeng.

Both have a sound quality that is more than acceptable to me, but there
is that one difference I could hear. Interesting how you have a
different experience. Perhaps it has something to do with the
headphones.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Playback comes to iPeng

2011-02-09 Thread Relayer35

This is a nice feature. The remote streaming is nice. I already have
similar apps that do this, Zumocast (which everything passes through
their server, so you're always dependent on it being up), Subsonic
(which is nice, unless you want to fast forward through a song), and
Audiogalaxy (which was crap). This would be a welcome alternative,
especially considering that I already have three Squeezebox's and their
would be no additional overhead as I load the Squeezcenter software
anyway.

So, I splurged and paid the $5, and have to say I'm very disappointed.
It seems buggy as hell. I am using this on an iPhone 4. I had to close
out iPeng three times by double clicking the home button and holding
down the icon and closing it. When it did play, it was okay, but the
screen kept blinking on me, and the WiFi selection would constantly pop
up, (I was at work, and can't use their WiFi despite the fact it was
detected). I paused it to make a phone call, but when I switched back,
it did not keep my place in the song, instead I had to start all over
(and of course it didn't play the first time, requiring me to close out
the app again). What happens is it looks like it is playing for about 30
seconds, but no sound comes out, then it just stops.

I also have a general question about which ports need to be forwarded.
Both the 3483 and the one I have for the interface ? I'd rather
change the external ports, and map them to the 3483 and . But it
looked like in the app I could set the server address, but there was no
way to reassign the . Am I missing something? Some detailed
instructions on how this all works would be welcome. Also, is there a
way to secure the connection. I read something about setting up a
password, but would that be for all the Squeezeboxes?

I understand this is your first shot at this, but since you are
charging actual money for this feature, I shouldn't have to be a beta
tester. The streaming is very buggy, and at this point in time,
unusable.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Playback comes to iPeng

2011-02-09 Thread gharris999

Pippin: thank you so much for implementing this feature. I can report
that it's working very well on both my iPad and on my 3rd gen iPod
Touch. I went ahead and did the in-app purchase on the Touch even
though I own both apps. I don't mind pushing a little spare change
your way for such a significant new feature.

I listened to a flaced recording of Messiaen's "La Navitité" last night
using iPeng, the iPod touch and some Etymotic ER-4 ear phones. It
sounded pretty damn good. Gapless playback, when it comes, will be
nice.

One thing I noticed: when I control iPeng's playlist via SBS's webUI
from a computer, iPeng's player controls become non-responsive. I had
to clear iPeng's playlist from the webUI on the other machine before I
could regain control.

Doing a very quick, totally subjective comparison between the
Touch+iPeng vs. a SBController (7.6 r9307) using beta audio playback,
listening to the same content and using the Etymotics for bothI'd
say the Touch sounds fairly comparable...with the SBC maybe winning in
terms of reproduction accuracy and dynamic range. That has nothing to
do with iPeng, of course...that's the underlying hardware...that and
the vagaries of my 53-year-old ears.

I'll be interested to hear what other folks think on that score. Is
iPeng's playback affected by the Touch's Settings->Audio->EQ?

In terms of ease of use, there's no comparison. iPeng wins hands down.
Using your UI has become 2nd nature to me.

Anyway, great job...thanks again, and I'll be eagerly awaiting further
updates.

What about VPN tunneling ?

I have a PPTP VPN server at home and the iPhone4 can connect to it and
I can access my internal network via Mobile Safari. When I connect
iPeng I also see all the players and can browse my library, but when I
try to play something it behaves similar to Spotify, it just changes
the Play icon to Pause button in Now Playing screen but there is no
audio.

You can't connect to a server if no player is connected to it, and you
only see the players connected to the same server.

First move the player to the server you want (long press on players
name), after that it's possible to connect to that server and control
the player

Yes, please report back on your iplayer findings.

I've been testing the latest portaudio r1596 with my HDA sound card and
it looks promising. The hda sound card has been working great for the
last 4 hours. Rory was having issues with squeezeslave crashing on his

to work for the hda alsa driver as well.

If testing continues to go smoothly, I'll commit the changes to

Great to hear you got your property back.

I wouldn't worry too much about the person who stole it - 'petty theft'
or not he abused the trust which his customer had for him. How many
other people has he ripped off before or would he rip off in the future
if he had not been caught?

What a pity you had to actually do so much work yourself to get the
police to take action but at least they did in the end. Since you
basically had evidence that would ID the exact physical address it was
used from (via the ISPs records of IP address) they should have taken
action to resolve the crime without you having to push them.

[slim] Napster - can't see my music library

2011-02-09 Thread slimfast

I'm running 7.5.1 on a QNAP server though I see the same problem if I
connect directly to mysqueezebox.com so I don't think it's related to
the specific server hardware.

Basically, although I can play all the Napster 'radio stations' and
their themed playlists, my own music library is empty.

I can access my music library on the PC via Napster's own website
interface so it is there, it's just that my Squeezeboxes can't see it.

When I originally had the problem I could see 5 or 6 artists out of
probably 20-30 in the library ... so I cleared and rebuilt the whole
Napster library in case there was some sort of corruption. Now I've
added back in a few artists, nothing is showing on the Squeezebox at
all.

Another idea for those unwanted CD cases, ask your local library if they

Library CD's and their cases get pretty beat up as they are checked

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-02-09 Thread Squid

I am glad to see that the 'download to phone' feature has been fixed and
now works.
However, there's still something that bothers me a lot. My entire
library consists of full albums grouped by album artist. Now, I can go
browse the library by either album name or by album artist. But when I
download an album to my phone, the tracks get saved under a directory
by Artist, not by AlbumArtist. E.g. if I have a few tracks with
collaborating artists, which I added in the Artist tag, then these
tracks end up in their own directory on my phone. My phone's media
player (HTC) then shows these all under a different album (with the
same name and cover) since they all reside in a different folder.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-02-09 Thread RichardH

I have had squeezeCommander for several weeks now, and love it, but I
need some help.

I am running squeeze 7.5.3, have two servers (vortex box and laptop)
and one receiver. I want to be able to put away my controller and use
SqueezeCommander exclusively.

Right now, if I am playing music using my controller on the Vortex Box,
the only library I can connect to on the SC is VortexBox. If I try to
access the laptop library, I get a message on the SC saying Your player
was not found, No SqueezeBox is connected to this server. If I then go
back to the controller and connect to the laptop library, then on SC I
can now connect to the laptop, but not the VortexBox. This also holds
true for MySqueezeBox.

How can I switch between these 3 music sources without first doing it
on the controller? I have tried turning off the controller to no
success.

By the way, I love everything else about the application, and I assume
there is something I am doing wrong.

Thanks

Kudos to the Swiss police. You handed them the data they needed on a
plate to catch a criminal and they acted on it.

Compare this to my experience here in the UK. Someone created a
fraudulent direct debit on my bank account to pay for their Sky
subscription. The DD mandate had a reference number which Sky confirmed
was the person's account number. Sky were in a position to identify the
fraudster to the police. (The Data Protection Act meant that they could
not, of course, give the identity to me).

I phoned the police to give them the information they needed to
apprehend the fraudster and you know what? They were completely
uninterested. Probably too busy kicking down innocent Muslims' doors.

I tried to submit a ticket, but there appears to be a problem with the

I got an error as though the website went down. I'll try again later.

It's a Napster issue. We're using their latest and greatest API (as

pretty buggy.

[slim] Problems with Napster (wrong config?)

2011-02-09 Thread rewers

Hi,

I'm new to the Squeezebox world. Today I've got my Squeezebox Receiver.
And I got it up and running with the Net::UPAP Receiver Configuration
Tool. But now I'm still facing problems with Napster. My installation
is as follows:

Squeezebox Server on Mac OS X.
Squeezebox Receiver connected via WiFi.
Android Phone with SqueezeControl-App.
Registered to mysqueezebox.com

And as I said: It plays all the music from my Mac (Server). And it also
plays music from some apps like "Live Music Archive". And it also
connects to my Napster account. But whenever I try to play a song it
tells me ""Track for download only, can't be played". I read in other
threads that Napster had some problems around new year's. But they are
supposed to be fixed. So I guess it must be a configuration problem. Or
are there still problems with the Napster network?

By the way: My Napster account is a German Napster accout (if that
matters).

Greetings,
rewers.

Welcome to the forum. check your other post for an answer. p.s. the
approach around here is to not cross post. That is, choose the "best"
forum for your question and post in only that forum. Most users here
can see ALL the forum posts very easily so even if you post in a forum
which maybe wasn't appropriate, someone will answer you. Multiple posts
just gets messy.

Re: [slim] Problem with radio station(s)

2011-02-09 Thread toby10

Both stations are very limited in distribution, this is the fault of the
stations themselves. KLEJ is not listed on any other service that I can
find.

Foggy is also listed on the Reciva site and also does not play from
there.
I'd send an email to Foggy, tell them to go to www.Reciva.com > Genre >
Search, enter Foggy, then try to play it. Let them see for themselves
that it does not play.

I'd also send an email to www.RadioTime.com and give the same details,
they handle these streams for SqueezeBox players.

You picked two badly run stations that are both doing a horrible job
marketing their streams and making their streams reliable. ;)

I had some conversation with bluegaspode on this and we didn't really
have a good idea on how to make the two interoperable but I had hoped
(as you can see I didn't test it) that it would at least work if the
feature is turned off in iPeng.
With SqueezePad it works until you decide to change the volume. I will
have to find out whether it's iPeng or SqeezePad changing the volume,
with SqueezeCast I have no idea what's going on.

Yes. The name is being handled by the server and both SqueezeCast and
SqueezePlay are a bit simplistic in that they just set a new name on
startup. It doesn't hurt as much in SqueezePad since that at least sets
a useful name (your device name) but SqueezeCast just sets
"SqueezeCast".

iPeng sets the name when the player doesn't already have one (also to
the device name) or leaves it alone if you change it.
Maybe I extend that to giving an own name if the name is
"SqueezeCast".

iPeng can't automatically find your server over the internet, you have
to set your server's address manually (through Settings->iPeng
Settings->Add Server).
The best way to do this is to use a dynamic DNS service, there are a
few free ones and most current routers support this.
Also, please make sure to open port 3483 to both UDP and TCP and also,
you _need_ to forward the port to the same port number you use
internally (so 3483 has to be forwarded to port 3483 and 9000 to 9000
or whatever your server uses. The reason is that there are a lot of
places in the SlimProto protocol where the port number is being
communicated by the server and the server doesn't know about port
forwarding. This is also the way the Squeezeboxes work.

There is a way if you can find an old "iPeng.ipa" or "iPeng1.ipa",...
on your computer, e.g. in the trash can (the iTunes folder also seems
to keep some history):
1. Delete iPeng both on your device and in the "Apps" section (left
hand pane) of iTunes
2. Drag the old "iPeng*.ipa" file into that "Apps" section in iTunes
3. Connect your device and sync.

In album view, the pop up context menu does not have artist in it ? I

subscription, get a 60 day free WiMP account on wimp.dk/sbox" (see
attachment). But in Denmark the free account is only for 30 days - and
moreover, the link is wrong it directs to wimp.no/sbox instead of
wimp.dk/sbox.

Maybe the app is not really working in Denmark anyway? It seems that
the country restrictions and references is a bit messy at the moment...

Re: [slim] Stolen Boom - Can the Logs tell me when?

2011-02-09 Thread Sike

The story so far:

15. Jan 2011: The Device was stolen. The thief got it working around
22:00 (Thats when it logged on to mysqueezebox.com for the first time)

18. Jan 2011: I reported it to the police as stolen. It took 2 hours to
explain to them how 'cool' it is that I have the IP address of the
person who took it. They explained that they probably can't help me
because the device 'only' costs CHF 300.- (Around 300$) and it's not
worth their time. I made big fuss about them being useless and how much
time we have wasted already. They even offered to come to the place it
was stolen from and dust for fingerprints... Eventually they understood
that an IP address with a timestamp is better.

21. Jan 2011: The Police called to me inform me that they will look up
the IP with the provider and it will cost them CHF 250.- (Again 250$)
to do this.

26. Jan: 2011: They called me to tell me that they have an address and
they will be going around on Monday :)

08. Feb: 2011: The police called me and informed me that they had
recovered my Boom :) The guy (Who I suspected to begin with) had
already sold it on ricardo.ch (eBay type platform for Switzerland) and
already had it packaged ready to go, but had not sent it yet. He
confessed to stealing it and as he had already sold it online he could
not pull the: "I just borrowed it" line.

He will now be formally charged by the police and I can also press
charges. I am still on the fence if I should press charges too. The guy
is a painter who works for a company I contracted to paint my house
while I was on holiday abroad. He had a key and just took it which is
pretty bad and he had sold it which is a bit of a character fault, to
put it mildly. Giving him a criminal record will probably make his life
harder, but I probably will teach him a lesson and hopfully stop him
from robbing the next customer.

All in all mysqueezebox.com is a great service! I would never have
signed up if it was optional. Not only has it recovered my Boom, but it
has restored a little bit of faith in the justice system and given me a
good geek-story to tell my fellow geeks. Thanks also to 'andyg' for his
help!
