So, is it time to start speculating why Amazon is clearing out their SB

And you are 100% sure that the BOOM is not instead connected to
mysqueezebox.com? If you login to your SB account at mysqueezebox.com,
the boom should show up under players as "disconnected". If it shows up
as connected, your Boom is not actually connected to your local SbS.

If your boom is connected to mysb.com, you should use the boom menu to
navigate to "my music" and it should offer to change you to your local
SbS.

Re: [slim] "Couldn't find DHCP server" problem hits one SB3 but not the other

2011-03-21 Thread t-chok

The behavior on this thing is real erratic. It now usually -- but not
always -- finds the DHCP server and gets an IP address okay, but it can
never wirelessly connect to the SBS server, nor can it find
mysqueezebox.com.

This weekend I did what I think may be the ultimate test for it. I
took both of my SB3's over to a friend's house. I downloaded SBS 7.5.3
onto his PC, and then, one at a time, I tried to connect my two SB3's to
his network and SBS. My "family room" SB3, which has been running fine
all along, connected without a hitch and was up and running in a flash.
My "kitchen" SB3, the one I've been having trouble with, came back with
the same problem. couldn't find the DHCP server.

At this point, I think there is a hardware problem and am going to
return it for warranty, unless someone has another idea.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Tim

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet on Sale $169

2011-03-21 Thread ajwillys

I've been wanting to jump on the Squeezebox bandwagon for awhile. I
grabbed two Boom's with this deal and can't wait for them to come! I'm
sure they're probably being discontinued (not on their website anymore),
but that's OK. They will be replaced by something that is WAY more than
$135, I'm sure.

Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)

2011-03-21 Thread firedog

>From a thread on another forum designed to show the differences between
standard CD quality and hi-res recordings (same recording at different
sampling rates and bit depth).

To my ears, the differences are clearly there, just as described. If
you can't discern them, then either your system isn't up to snuff or
your ears need training.

IMO, the vast majority of listeners, if played these tracks, would say
they sound "the same". They all sound good -they're from the same
master. It's just that when you know what to listen for, you can hear
the difference.

from Bruce Brown's (Puget Sound) thread at
http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?2938-The-Art-of-Listening-Hi-rez-music

One thread (the one with the link here) lets you compare redbook to
higher res versions of the same music. You can clearly hear the
differences, as Bruce says below in the thread:

"Here is a file that we recorded at a native 24/352.8 It starts off
with piano/drum. Do not listen to the music! Instead, concentrate on
the sticks hitting the cymbal. Listen to the attack/transient of the
initial hit. Listen to the tone and then the decay. Focus on just this
one element.
Listen to the sound of the cymbals in the room. How big is the room?
What kind of space is this drummer in? Listen to the tone of the
cymbal.
Now... as you go down to 176.4, then 88.2 and finally 16/44.1, listen
to these elements that I talked about above. Listen how the transient
attack becomes more dull. Notice how the tone of the cymbal changes
from crisp/pristine to dull and flat. Next, notice how the decay
becomes shorter and shorter and the "room" becomes smaller and more dry
with less reverb."

To my ears, clear proof that the improvement with hi -res is audible.
You can hear the differences in transients and decay, and you can hear
that the room "gets smaller" at lower res.

And please don't start telling me I imagined it all.

I don't have a 352.8 DAC... and I have no way of knowing how the
downsampling from 352-176-88-44 was done...

I'll try a few things...

Can you give us a short description how you tested the different
recordings against and which of them? How you switched? From a very
short look it doesn´t seem the recording uses more then 13bits.
You may join this thread at Hydrogenaudio.org or ask the poster of

Sounds to me as if the outage may have partially killed the SB's wi-fi
card. If it's still under warranty then by all means try that route
(but don't mention the outage to Logitech).

If the warranty has expired you could prove this by swapping the cards
between the SBs.

Yes.
Feels familiar and I like the player selection button.
No Playback.
But it reacts really slowly and sometimes not at all. And it's hard to
hit some control elements at all. Entering text is awkward and at least
on my Xperia leaves a textbox hanging around on the screen, maybe that's
also why I can't get it to work with authenticating servers.

This is certainly not an Android App but something else in an Android
wrapper.

You could use a SB3 with IR-Blaster (a SBS plugin and a simple IR
LED).
Using IR-Blaster, you can power on/off and change the volume of your
Receiver.

That's the problem.

In the current SqueezeCommander 0.9.5.x, I always try to switch the
player to "www.mysqueezebox.com".
Unfortunately, the SBS 7.3.3 does not know MySB. I need to tell him to
connect to "www.squeezenetwork.com" in this case.

The issue is fixed in 0.9.6.

Most N capable routers have much better range than earlier B/G routers.
With my router where it is I can run my SB3 in the neighbor 2 doors down
garage with no problems.
Wireless networks biggest enemy is lots of metal and big solid objects
between you and the router. Having your router near or in front of a
window that faces your garden will probably yield excellent results at
the bottom of the garden, even with wireless G.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-03-21 Thread Mark Miksis

Hmm, not sure what to think compared to squeezecommander. It'll take
some time to get used to it. Some first impressions:
- squeezecommander is faster.
- I like the ability to tap the player name and get a player selector
screen. But I prefer the way that squeezecommander shows you sync
groups from it's player list.
- The landscape tablet split screen seems to work intermittently. Does
this require a minimum Android version? I'm testing on a 7" tablet
running CM7 (gingerbread).

I've gotten really used to swipe-left and right for players and
playlist screens on squeezecommander and really miss those "shortcuts".

I hope you also like the new iPeng-style look of the
PlayerServerScreen. :-)

PS: Long-Pressing the player name (on the bottom of every page) also
brings you to the PlayerServerScreen. (I think that already works in
0.9.5.x, but I'm not 100% sure)

totally illogical. Please give me some tips how to fix that peace of

How does Squeezecommander scale to larger Android devices such as
tablets with 1024x600 pixel screens?

Is there a landscape mode? Screenshots of Squeezecommander depict

Can the user adjust the font size?

OK, what about scaling? Are text and icons scaled appropriate to the
screen dimensions, or does everything just get larger on the larger
display?

And is there any user control over scaling, or is it fixed according to
the screen dimensions?

AFAICT it's just larger on a larger screen with no user control. On my
7" tablet it looks pretty good, but might not be so great on 10".

If you mean Nook Color CM7 in general, it's pretty amazing for $250.
CM7 is still pre-RC, but mostly works. Great screen. BT has crappy
range and HW video decoding is still being fixed so it's not a great
movie watching device yet. Otherwise it works well as an android
tablet. I like Gingerbread on this size device and have some questions
in my mind about whether Honeycomb will be better or not.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

Sorry, that's poorly worded. The stuff that doesn't work yet applies
to CM7 for the Nook Color, not the Nook Color hardware.
