Re: [slim] Albums show up twice

2011-05-28 Thread aubuti

Adjunkten;633566 Wrote:
For instance, SB will list a two-disc album as two albums, unless all
 files are in one folder.
Sorry, but that is not quite true. Even if the tracks from the two
discs are in separate folders, SBS will happily list them as one album,
in correct order, if:
a) the ALBUM tags are identical
b) the DISCNUMBER tags are set
c) you have selected the SBS setting to treat multi-disc albums as
one

Back to the OP's problem, it is almost certainly a tagging problem. The
most common is having subtle differences in the tags across tracks, such
as a trailing space at the end of the album title on some tracks, but
not all. Or small differences in punctuation. Another possibility is
having multiple types of tags in some files, such as having both ID3v1
and ID3v2 tags, or ID3v2 and Ogg tags, or having anything except Vorbis
comments as tags for FLAC files.

Use a good tagging program to thoroughly examine (seems OK isn't good
enough until you get it resolved) the tags. I highly recommend mp3tag,
which is freeware from www.mp3tag.de. Make the task manageable by first
working with only one of the problem albums, rather than trying to
resolve all the problems at once. After you've found the problem with
one album, it's likely to be the same problem on other albums, although
you may have a variety of different problems.

Re: [slim] Favorite SBS Browser Interface?

2011-05-28 Thread aubuti

1. You should distinguish interfaces (what SBS sometimes calls skins)
from different frontends. All those interfaces/skins you can access
through Settings Interface (Touch, Nokia770, Fishbone, Handheld,
Classic, Default, etc) are different presentations of SBS's built-in
web server. Frontends like Moose and muso are separate programs.

A big reason you should make the distinction is that support for
alternative interfaces/skins is likely going to disappear in SBS 7.6.0,
as part of the 'onebrowser' effort to harmonize interfaces across
different devices. I think then you'll be limited to Default and
Classic. It's not impossible that someone will support alternatives
(eg, Touch, Nokia770, and Fishbone were all voluntary efforts by
members of the community), but I really don't expect to see much action
in that area.

2. I don't use the web ui much for controlling my SBs, but when I do I
usually use good old Default. For a time I used Touch and Fishbone, but
I eventually found them too sparse and too busy, respectively.

3. I don't know why you're getting the 404, but it may have something
to do with SBS gagging on that many genres. If you yourself don't know
why you have so many genres I suggest attacking it at the source,
rather than at the presentation level. Load up your library (or a
subset of it) in a good tagging program like mp3tag and sort on genre
to see what you have, and then impose some sense on it.

Re: [slim] Ideal Server Computer?

2011-05-28 Thread fairyliquidizer

Personally I reckon the argument should start with what hardware you own
and can repurpose.

When I killed my Pogoplug (which with 7.6 I had no performance concerns
with) I remembered that I had an EEE PC 701 with a Celeron M and 1GB
RAM and an nlited XP install. This is more than powerful for running
Squeezebox server with spotify, music ip, custom browse, dynamic
playlists, spicefly sugarcube and a few more plugins.

When the solid state drive on this dies I am getting a laptop from my
sister with a broken display and I'll use that probably with Debian or
vortexbox.

It's all reasonably power efficient and I haven't wasted money on extra
hardware.

Oh my tunes are stored on a 2.5 portable hard disk so no extra power
is required.

I'm not big on using notebooks as servers for a number of reasons. One
is the cost, where you can almost always buy or build a comparable

you're pretty much forced to use external disk drives for storage of a
large music library. That means an extra wall wart and a couple of
extra cables, which is just kinda messy.

I have this debate with myself all the time. One thought: shouldn't
using external drives be viewed as an advantage, in that it separates
the music from the OS?

No it is nothing to do with the space. However the radio chef issue
is different but similar to the previous issue.

The radio chef issue is die to the fact it is only work with the mms

protocol. MMS has been deprecated by Microsoft for about 6 yrs now and
even WMP does not support it (see
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771761(WS.10).aspx ). The
mms protocol is not supported by SBS - you can get play it if you
install the PlayWMA plugin with right version of mplayer for your
server and then disable native WMA.

The station should just enable http streaming (usually a check box
tick) and stop using dead protocols.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the other URL - AFAICT it is not the
mms issue but possible a codec one but PlayWMA plugin will also work
for it.

Supporting the other services means Logitech and the service provider
(and the record companies) coming to a business agreement to extend the
service to Squeezeboxes. These agreements also tend to be
country-specific because of music licensing. Logitech has made
agreements with the other services. Why not Microsoft? I'm not privy to
the negotiations, but I expect it's some combination of the reasons you

You need to read the Microsoft page but in a nutshell.

mms:// used to mean the mms protocol. Then Microsoft started using
http - so they said mms:// means try http protocol and then try mms
protocol. Then Microsoft said - we have new protocol rtsp and we also
deprecate mms so every body should use http:// for your URLs - but
users didn't so Microsoft then said - use mms:// but then servers will
try rtsp and then http.

So now users should use mms:// in front of URLs if they want to use
http protocol - classic Microsoft nonsense.

Will installing the PlayWMA plugin affect the playback of other WMA

Yes - all stream and files will be transcoded using mplayer on the
server and sent using Flac to players. You will not hear any
difference.

The problem is with the station. You should contact the station and
complain they are using a deprecated no longer supported protocol.

Re: [slim] Zune Pass

2011-05-28 Thread toby10

Ok, let's try a different approach. :)

You can get Rhapsody, Napster, Pandora, etc... on numerous different
devices and platforms from numerous different manufacturers. To name
just a few off of the top of my head...

SqueezeBox, Sonos, Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, Denon, Apple, Roku,
PopcornHour, Western Digital, Onkyo, Android, JVC, Toshiba, Samsung,
LG, Panasonic, Livio, Acoustic Reasearch, HP, Sangean, Rotel, Chumby,
Grace, Boxee, Tivo, Vudu, D-Link, NetGear, and MANY others...

As stated before, I find it very peculiar that out of all these many
manufacturers that are obviously very open to music services yet not
one offers Zune Pass.
I can only guess Microsoft is either difficult to deal with or is
asking too much $$$ or simply won't license to anyone (which is my
bet).

AFAIK, Zune Pass is solely available on your PC or Windows Phone or
Xbox, that's it. So my bet is that Microsoft simply has no interest in
licensing to other products.
I'd be asking Zune why your Zune subscription is so limited to very few
options in the market. It is this extreme limitation why many in here
give Zune such poor marks (hence poor comments) and why many do not
subscribe to Zune, it is simply far too limiting a service offered to
only a very small number of Windows only devices. :)

get spotify once they have fixed the volume normalization issue they
have in libspotify for x86.

With spotify I can easilly satisfy visitors and guest :) they tend to
find my music taste esoteric , and it takes time to download and scan
in more party music...

Re: [slim] So freaking frustrated

2011-05-28 Thread bluegaspode

Is this player connected to your server? Sometimes they decide to just
connect to MySB.com.

Try to start a song from your local library directly on that player -
this will make sure it's connected to the server.

Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all
your music to your Android device. Take your music everywhere!

What player model is it?
In iPeng - if it's registered for MySqueezebox.com, it will show the
player under that Music Source as well or if the player is unconnected
to the server but still on the network it should show up as
unconnected player. If it's none of this the player is probably not
communicating, have you tried to power-cycle it?

Re: [slim] Beta: SqueezeConfig - UDAP Config tool for Android

2011-05-28 Thread LukeS

I am getting force close app errors every time I try and config my
receiver. The app loads and finds the squeezebox receiver but when I
select the receiver from the device list the squeeze config app says
getting device data then crashes with a force close error. The
process that crashes is de.cedata.android.squeezeydap. I have tried
on my rotted Moto droid 1 with custom rom and my brothers rooted moto
droid 1 with stock rom both with the same error.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: [slim] Zune Pass

2011-05-28 Thread steve781

I've used ZunePass for years and love it. I pay $12/month for unlimited
music rentals and I get 10 free downloads (DRM free MP3s per month). It
is companies like Apple that are ripping people off by charging $1 per
song. Given the quality of Zune players and WP7 phones, I don't mind
being limited to one manufacturer.
