Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-08-06 Thread ilves

I just moved from iPhone to Android, from the great iPeng to the equally
great SqueezeCommander. I've only noticed one, albeit irritating, issue
so far: in the middle of a Trackstat menu, I click on a song, that
brings up the AddToEnd/PlayNext/etc menu, I select AddToEnd, everything
is OK, but when the Trackstat menu is reloaded the position is not
maintained, the list is scrolled to the top. iPeng also had an issue in
this area in that it randomly re-sorted songs with the same playcount
but at least it kept the position in the same neighbourhood.

Can this be fixed in a future version, or is there any workaround?
Thanks.

All the bugzilla links seem to be for Touch and Radio and 7.6. I

[slim] Playlist question

2011-08-06 Thread STEVESPUR

Not 7.6 related - When adding songs to a current playlist whilst it is
playing, it seems that the playlist is re-started meaning that already
played songs from perhaps 5 minutes ago may be replayed. Is there a
way of adding songs whilst a playlist is playing without the playlist
seemingly being re-started?

Thanks for any thoughts

Make sure to register one if there is something you are missing. Please
note that many problems show up both on Touch, Radio and Controller and
in this case we don't need a bug specific for the Controller.

If you don't know how to register a bug and don't feel confident doing
it after reading the following page, just register a support case at

register it

Do you use the +/Add button to add them ?
The +/Add button should just add the track at the end and don't disturb
what's currently playing, isn't this what's happening in your setup ?

Possibly the shuffle setting might cause a re-shuffle under some
circumstances, but I'm not completely sure when this happens. Could

[slim] What would make you buy another Squeezebox ?

2011-08-06 Thread erland

This poll is a bit similar to the ones I posted about two weeks ago, but
this time I'd like to know what changes that would make it most
interesting for you to buy another Squeezebox.

Note, the question is only related to yourself, not your friends or
relatives, see below for the separate poll thread about what would make
it easier to recommend a Squeezebox to someone else.

Also note that the question is not about what would improve your
current Squeezebox, it's about what would be needed to make it worth
for you to invest in more Squeezebox hardware.

Try to avoid checking all the checkboxes, try to limit yourself to
check the top 3 or something similar.

Re: [slim] iPeng update: Let your Squeezebox get Social

2011-08-06 Thread pippin

New iPeng updates are now available in the App Store.

One thing is that it fixes an annoying crash on startup that some
people experienced after upgrading to Squeezebox Server 7.6.0. There
was a simple workaround but hey, let's better fix it...

To not make it just a boring bugfix, there are also a few updates to
the functionality:

BROWSER
* There is now an (internet) browser under Extras that you can use to
browse and play music from web sites on your Squeezebox. I love that I
can no read music blogs like Stereogum and listen to the stuff they
link right away :)
* Each page driven by a browser (including facebook and Wikipedia) now
has it's owm URL entry field and pull to refresh feature (iOs 4 and
newer only).

SHARING
* There's now better support for sharing and playing shared links with
Rhapsody and Spotify
* Facebook posts now have an (editable) default I'm listening to
text.

LOOKUP
* Wikipedia lookup now also works for local library entries while
browsing
* There's now also a Google Search for Lyrics under the Lookup menu.
No, you can't use it for the lyrics screen saver in iPeng for iPad,
that would be a bit too much of a stretch.

PLAYBACK
* There's now an Play All entry on some context menus. There are a
few cases where this will play whole menus (e.g. Top 100 tracks in
Triode's Spotify plugin) where you could only play single tracks
before. Unfortunately, Favorites is not one of them.

CustomBrowse menus are custom, so you can remove the menu item.

Also, it's not part of ther server functionality. You can't really
blame the server for something you added yourself.

Maybe you should ask for help in the CustomBrowse thread under 3rd

I wasn't blaming anyone, just curious to see if there way of helping
me avoid a problem that's hit me a few times.

Since I almost always use Custom Browse I hadn't appreciated that the
possibility of messing up is somewhat greater with those menus than
with the standard SB ones (which don't provide a 'Play All'option at
the top level). On doing a few more functional tests I also find it's
mainly in the web interface that it's too easy for the mouse to stray.
With the Touch interface it's somewhat harder to select 'Play All' for a
selected menu item.

Removing the Custom Browse menus is not an option. For me, SB is
almost unusable without them. I'll work out if I can see a way to
restrict the options at the higher level menus. If not I'll ask in the
3rd party plugin forum.

Re: [slim] The 7.6.0 is fine for me thread

2011-08-06 Thread furonfour

Running Ubuntu 10.04, updated it via the Debian repository, which went
fine.

Operating system: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: x86_64-linux
Perl Version: 5.10.1 - x86_64-linux-gnu-thread-multi
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.32_02 (sqlite 3.7.5)

Gave me a bit of a scare my library was gone after restarting, but
noticed it was scanning my library. I figured the database change was
the cause, so went to fetch a snack.

Did a check to be sure it indexed all my music, scrolled through the
interface to see if it had all my artwork, and everything was fine.
Scanner seems a lot faster too:

Discovering files (12388 of 12388) Complete 00:00:12
Scanning new files (11602 of 11602) Complete 00:06:27
Discovering playlists (1 of 1) Complete 00:00:00
Pre-caching Artwork (628 of 628) Complete 00:00:30
The server has finished scanning your music collection.
Total Time: 00:07:09 (Monday, August 1, 2011 / 23.00.10)

This was a full rescan, used to take up to 30 minutes in the past. Also
noticed the web interface was more responsive and loaded faster. Adding
new music and rescanning takes less than a minute for me now, which
used to be up to 5 sometimes. My library contains only MP3 with
embedded artwork, ripped with EAC and some by Media Player, tagged with
MP3Tag (using MusicBrainz as source), volume leveled with mp3gain.

Server is running on an Intel Atom board by Zotac, 2 1TB WD Green
drives, 4 gig of RAM (If you have more than 1 GB of RAM, be sure to
check out the new option in the performance settings, seemed to make
things even faster for me).

It's serving a Transporter (wired), a Classic (wired) and a Boom
(wireless). The Boom has several alarms set which have worked
flawlessly.

Only issue I had was a problem I caused myself, I have several albums
by the same artist, of which I tagged one slightly different John-Doe
versus John Doe, which now caused the artist to show up twice (Not
even sure if this was the case before). After correcting the tags, the
album showed up under the right artist, but it left the old artist in
place with no songs under it. Doing a full rescan fixed it.

Nice work, though I was happy running under MySQL, I can see where the
switch to SQLite can come in handy. And since it improved my scanning
time, I'm not complaining :)

Very curious about the Logitech Media Server developments though, have
been considering putting all my movies on the server too so I can use
the physical space they take up for something more useful again.

2011-08-06 Thread PasTim

erland;647524 Wrote:
Would the problem be solved if I removed the Play all item on all top

The problem can still occur on lower level depending on your library
size and menu configuration but removing it from the top level would
probably not cause any harm as it's often not working properly anyway.

The other option, which also might work, is to limit the number of
played tracks to the Maximum Playlist Length setting in SBS
Settings/Advanced/Performance, at least as long as the user doesn't
raise this to a lot higher value than the defult (500).

I tried limiting the playlist length, not being sure if it applies to
CB or not. I stopped restarted to make sure it was saved properly. I
then ensured at least some items had been read into memory once by
selecting the menu item normally (this is sometimes a bit slow the
first time after start-up). I then selected 'Play All' for 'Works by
Composer' (but it could have been any of the CB items) where there are
around 12,000 tracks. It made no difference for me.

If you could limit the list to the Maximum Playlist Length that would
help, and would protect all menu levels. but please don't go out of your
way. I'm sure there are better uses of your time :-)

If I have to I can stop restart the server manually - it is, after
all, my mistake.

I don't see why you would be using sync at all in a commercial setting,
rather than running just one Squeezebox into a sound system with a
multichannel amp and volume controls and then out to several sets of
speakers. Most commonly in-ceiling speakers, but they could be any type

The problem is that it is a historical building. Not the usual US
drywall and plywood building. We also have to make sure that the
neighbours are happy so we need to be able to adjust the volume per
zone.

It's a spacious 50 seat restaurant and the radios were a bit meager
compared to the Sonos S5s. But also much much more expensive.

The sync is great on the Sonos.

Last night I had a party at my house and the whole Squeezebox system
went bezerk again. Not possible to change a song in iPeng and it

[slim] Squeezebox in sleep mode

2011-08-06 Thread mark1007

I was wondering if the squeezebox will still be able to access the songs
in my library if that computer goes into sleep mode.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox in sleep mode

2011-08-06 Thread Apesbrain

No, the computer running Squeezebox Server has to be fully on in order
to provide access to your personal library. Your Squeezebox player
will send your computer a wake on lan packet which, if the computer
is capable of responding to it and everything is configured properly,
will waken your computer from sleep/standby into full on state. Lots
of information on the forums about this, just search...

Question: What would make you buy another Squeezebox ?

- Simplified usage after initial installation/configuration
- Improved support for existing online services
- Support for more online services
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in Squeezebox Server/Player
  firmware
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in mysqueezebox.com
- Improved browsing of local library
- New Squeezebox hardware with built-in speakers and stereo support
- New Squeezebox hardware which have reliable support for local music

- New Squeezebox hardware with support for video
- New entry level Squeezebox hardware with a lower price

I will eventually probably buy buy a touch and a pair of audio engine 02

eventually. Something along the lines of a boom with a screen costing
less than £200 would certainly speed up the decision!!

The main reason for me is not in the list.
I would like to be able to use easily and flawlessly popular software
to play flac and radio streams with Squeezeboxes (especially the
Touch), and be able to get rid of SBS and mysqueezebox.com if I want
to do it.

With TinySBS, and an empty USB stick, it is fine for radios streams,
but not for flacs.

I would like Squeezeboxes to be network sound cards and use them
without installing SBS at all.

TinySBS may be used, if it allows to do that, but I don't want it to
scan or browse the library.

I want to be able to scan and browse with external softwares if I feel
like it.

I heard about different plugins to use foobar or mediamonkey.
But I hadn't had time to try yet.
Is SBS (or TinySBS ot mysqueezebox.com) still necessary ?
If yes, with one of those plugins, is it possible to get rid of scan
and browse from SBS (pointing SBS to an empty folder for example) ?

I like the new social features and it was something I missed before, I
share music on FB several times a week. I will certainly use the other
social features too :)

I bought the playback option but have only got it to work on the iPad,
do I have to sync both the iPad and the iPhone to iTunes for it to work
on the iPhone too? This feature will come to it's use when I have to do
the laundry. An almost seamless stream of music, I like that :)

speakers on shelves or wall brackets or something, with individual
volume controls per zone. If you can't pull the speaker cable through
the wall then use some of the nearly invisible speaker wire that is now

You've got both Ipegn for iPad and iPeng for iPhone, I read. Have you

The playback in the iPad App generally is a different product from
the one in the iPhone App by App Store logic, there really isn't a way
around that other than requiring a registration (and setting up an

HOW?

Quite some time ago, I suggested that a button somewhere that reported

If this were true now, a vote button that said x.xx works, x.xx

Of course this won't solve my unemployment problem and most of Logitech

Re: [slim] Performance of SQLite and large databases

2011-08-06 Thread Phil Meyer
I worry about SQLite. Does anyone have experience with such large
databases with SQLite? In the beta forum I’ve read somewhere that with
very large databases SQLite may run unexpectedly slow and possibly
even slower than MySQL? Thank you for your answers.

I worried about the move to SQLite too. Not so much scanning time; I had heard
initial reports that in general browsing may be slower for large libraries.

For my library (~4 tracks - titchy compared to yours!), 7.6.x is only
marginally quicker at scanning (about 5 mins), but it's less reliable at the
moment.

But so far, it feels like 7.6.x is a bit faster for browsing, which I am much
more interested in than scan time.

It may not be specifically the transition from MySQL to SQLite that has been
the deciding factor in performance gains, but rather a combination of other
changes in the code. i.e. refactoring code, optimising the number of queries
made, better file scanning, less scan phases to tidy up DB after files have
been scanned.

In my case, I had optimised by own MySQL instance, so it was already faster
than the SBS built-in MySQL instance default settings.

But it would be interesting to hear how performance scales over DB size -
whether effect on performance is linear or exponential as the number of tracks
increases.

Please post your findings when you give it a try.

2011-08-06 Thread JJZolx

I'm generating a very large test library right now and will post the
results after it's been scanned under both SQLite and MySQL. Maybe
sometime tomorrow or Monday.

It won't be possible to compare the overall scan times of SQLite/7.6 to
MySQL/7.6, since a clear rescan with MySQL in 7.6 hangs during the
precaching of artwork. It's possible to have the artwork precached
afterward, however, by running a new changed scan.

[slim] SBS 7.6 and Fishbone Interface

2011-08-06 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi - I see that Fishbone is no longer in the list of available interfaces in
7.6 I found a post and have the Fishbone.zip files. I have a couple of
questions that I am hoping someone can answer before I install it:

1. Is Fishbone no longer supported at all? Is there a reason?
2. Will installing it on 7.6 cause issues with the functioning of SB
Server? I put it on a Windows box and seems OK so far.
3. For Linux Fedora, where would I put the Fishbone files? on windows, i
put it in the html folder and that was all i needed to do. I can't figure
out where I would put them on Fedora (I have a Vortexbox).

It goes without saying that it is my favorite skin and I know where to find
all my settings it seems it would be a real shame if it were to go

Re: [slim] Performance of SQLite and large databases

2011-08-06 Thread JJZolx

Ok, the new library has been generated: 1,000,000 tracks (Why mess
around, right?)

I'm scanning it now with a 7.6.1 server running SQLite. I'm not
certain, but already I may be seeing something. Discovery of the 1M
files took just 9:28. Scanning the first 25k tracks took about 10
minutes. Now, at 50k tracks, the time for the scanning new files pass
is over 42 minutes. Much slower per track than for my 33k track
library, which takes less than 12 minutes total to scan.

If it keeps degrading like this as the database grows larger, it's
going to take a _very_ long time to scan the whole library. Maybe
longer than I have the patience for.

It will be interesting to see how well SBS with MySQL handles scanning
the same library. I may also have to scale back the test to something
like 250k tracks.

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-06 Thread GeeJay

The reason Betamax died was it did nothing better than VHS, and had
several disadvantages. Sonos may very well have the advantage in
certain respects, but the fact is there are differences between the
products that can allow both to survive. The last time I checked, Sonos
was missing some capabilities that I consider critical to my listening
experience. Fortunately, unlike Beta vs VHS, the media is independent
from the player, so there doesn't have to be one clear winner.

As far as I can see it runs ANALYZE(SQLite) or OPTIMIZE TABLE(MySQL) at
the end of a full rescan and after every 100 tracks in a new/changed
scan.

The last time I checked, Sonos was missing some capabilities that I

Could you give some examples ?

I'm just asking because I'm seriously interested to hear why people
select Squeezebox over Sonos, if you compare their specifications they
are fairly similar and everyone more or less knows that Sonos just
works while it usually takes a bit of time until you have configured
the Squeezebox system to behave this way.

The Squeezebox is rumored on these forum to have higher audio quality
but no one seems to have compared them in a blind test, which is the
only way to know for sure. My local HiFi reseller strongly recommended
Sonos for its higher audio quality but I personally don't trust them
because they probably have a higher margin on Sonos so that's why they
want to sell them instead of Squeezebox Touch.

I tried to do a comparison myself based on the specifications a few
days back in this post:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=646795#post646795
(But I have no real world experience of Sonos, so I'm not sure if I'm
correct)

Re: [slim] Let's get it fixed

2011-08-06 Thread erland

Isn't this what we tried to do in the following threads:
The 7.6.0 is fine for me thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89393
The 7.6.x lingering issues thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89395

I'm guessing you have also seen the different lists of known problems
and fixed bugs on the troubleshooting page on the wiki ?
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Troubleshooting76

As a start, I think everyone with a problem should at least ensure that
their problem exists as a 7.6.0 bug, either by:
- registering it yourself (see above troubleshooting page for more
information)
or
- registering a support case at http://www.logitech.com/support,
describe your problem and ask Logitech support staff to help you solve
it or make sure there is a bug report for it.

I know this sounds bad but realistically I think Logitech will only
focus on fixing bugs which have been registered as bug reports in the
7.6.1 release, so if people have problem which isn't registered as bug
reports they will probably not be fixed in 7.6.1.

Or were you thinking about something more automatic ?
I actually thought about doing a plugin that packaged all relevant logs
and configuration files into a zip and made it easy to attach with bug
reports a few years back but I decided to not do it at that time.

Well, that just plain wasn't going to happen. It would have taken
weeks.

Trying again with a 260k track library. I'll run the MySQL scan first
this time.

Can you see in the scanner.log which artwork file it stalls on ?

As mentioned previously in the thread, if it stalls on a specific file,
make sure to register a bug report and attach that file to the bug.

You can enable more logging by going to SBS Settings/Advanced/Logging
and changing one or several of the following log points to debug:
- scan
- artwork
- scan.import
- scan.scanner

With a library of this size, it's probably recommended to set it to
High.

Try the latest 7.6.1 nightly, there are some bugs related to missing
music that has been corrected in it. Not sure if it solves your problem
but if it isn't it would be good if you try it so we can find out what's
causing it in your setup.

Yes and I think that's a bug that has been fixed in 7.6.1, so if people
are seeing the same thing also in 7.6.1 it's important that we get more
information so we can find the cause.

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...

2011-08-06 Thread GeeJay

Last I checked, the system didn't support ratings in the same way your
plugins allow for Squeezebox. I use random playlists that allow for
higher rated tracks to play more frequently. Some of these dynamic
playlists can get pretty narrow in focus: Christmas, the British
Invasion years (1963-1970), Early Rock Roll (1954-1962). Sonos may
very well offer all that now, but it didn't when I was shopping for a
system.
