What would the benefit be, compared to the original SBoxes? Total dependence on the Logitech server even for access to locally stored material, yes, but apart from that? I fail to see whats been improved, but I havent upgraded my radios either, Mysb.com server failure alone makes me question the wisdom of such a move, three outages in a month, seriously, who can trust these guys? Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng UE, the iOS App for the Smart Radio
Erland, thanks for the warm words :) And no, I won't implement playlist saving, Logitech shall do that (it would be sooo simple well, almost) ;) mikael_b wrote: I still believe they should have stayed with the SBoxes , perhaps invested in a mayor software rewrite? Well, I agree on that one (could even elaborate for days how that major software rewrite should IMHO have looked like), but it's not what they chose to do. IMHO, they overall made a big mistake, but it's not _all_ bad. They had a few goals and they did in fact meet those: - Handling on the transition between local and remote servers works much more seamless. Face it: While most of _us_ here probably run their own 24/7 server, most people out there in the wild do not. They want an internet radio and from time to time fire up their PC or Mac to listen to what's stored on there. With this scenario, the Smart Radio works much better (read: easier) than the Squeezebox. Heck, you can even run 3 PCs and mix and match tracks from all of these into one playlist. No Server switching. Now if you could only save that one... - Their new App, while certainly very limited in functionality and technically not well done (they don't support VoiceOver at all, for example, IMHO a no-go for a professional App these days) _does_ have something to it: it has a very simple (and actually very well-designed) Favorites screen where you can store your favorite radio stations. This does have it's merits: I bet a significant number of Smart Radio users really want to use this thing mainly as an internet radio for two handful of stations and the occassional listening of something else. If you are this type of user, I bet Logitech's App is perfect (well, unless you need VoiceOver, of course). A number of people have asked me about such a screen for iPeng and I have refused to do it. With reason: iPeng is made for a different kind of user, power users who listen to lot of different music from various sources and want an effective and powerful way to handle that task and who use it a lot. That's a different use case and I believe it doesn't make sense to combine the two use cases in one App. The result would be an App that fits neither use case well. Why not have two which are very different for each type of user and that's now exactly what you see here: the Logitech App that is perfectly suited for people who above all want quick and simple access to their favorite stations and to be able to maybe control the volume while listening. And iPeng for those who want to explore their library or the depths of Spotify, MOG Co. So while I personally still prefer my Squeezeboxes I do see that there will probably be a type of user who clearly prefers the Smart Radio. Now, whether that particular user might not actually be even more satisfied with an iPhone dock or an AirPlay receiver, that's a different question, but not everybody wants to stream from his or her mobile device all the time while carrying it around. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97533 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!
I have a little Question/wish. I own a Squeezebox touch for my music. The Orange Squeeze is installed on an Android MP3-Player. Recently I bought a Popcorn Hour Player for my Videos. This Device can also handle Music, even as a UPNP Client. With an app called iMediaShare I would be able (but not paracticable enough) to stream Music from my NAS to the poppy. When I played with these devices I was asking myself if it would be possible to stream the music you are currently hearing (on Touch, Squeezeplayer etc) to an UPNPClients as well, like iMediaShare does??? Re: [slim] Is Olive One the answer?
Took me a while to find the tech specs: http://www.myoliveone.com/Ones/tech_specs It does not have a traditional digital out. You could do Miracast streaming to a box with a form of digital out but a quick glance at the Miracast standard seems to indicate that most devices will probably only support 16-bit 48khz audio which means you're not going to get bit-perfect output. And I don't know what other transformations might happen in the Miracast pipeline. Julf wrote: And it seems to have it's own, very limited, internal storage, instead of playing from the network. Does it do multi-zone and synchronisation? I don't see it providing the functionality of LMS + a bunch of SBs. It does play from the network. Read the tech specs above. Looks like it supports UPnP. It does claim to have some form of multi-zone support. It's not clear to me if they're just saying that you can get several of these for your house and play them separately or if they're talking about actual synchronization. All that said, it looks like a pretty interesting device that might be making good trade-offs for the market it's trying to attract. The whole ecosystem has the advantage of being a clean-sheet design to integrate with the latest crop of protocols, standards and devices. azinck3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97539 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Most people seem content to use general purpose uPnP or DLNA devices. A friend at work told me today I need to give up on the squeezebox thing. He recently bought a Grace Radio because he wanted something generally compatable with his various uPnP devices. Why do you need a special server? he asked. I explained that general purpose doesn't really work for somebody that has a large collection and wants good sound quality, ease of library navigation, and gapless playback. He just waved his hand dismissing all of that - clearly it's not something he cares about. I suspect his feelings are pretty representative of the typical user. I think that squeezebox-like devices will continue to be a niche product. I don't think you will see this integrated into any other products. Sonos is already filling this niche and is apparently successful at it. Re: [slim] Any ideas why this stream won't play?
ffplay will play it. So you can probably create a custom-convert.conf file and have a way to manually play it with an external helper app like ffplay. Re: [slim] BBC Radio titles
I think over the years I've experienced several occasions when the BBC changed some aspect of their streams that required updates to the plugin(s)! Other radio stations seem to manage to supply track data quite well... Re: [slim] BBC Radio titles
The BBC are moving over to a different method of delivering information, but that currently only works for Radio1 Radio1 Extra. Unfortunately, some bright spark decided to stop transmitting the old information. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?53229-Announce-BBCiPlayer-Plugin-(UK-only)p=711499viewfull=1#post711499 Tunein still transmit programme info. and pictures. Re: [slim] BBC Radio titles
I'll ask the BBC about this again - last time I was told that RadioVis was the strategic solution, but there still doesn't seem to be any useful data there other than for Radio1 and 1Xtra. Also its not really parsable for now playing information. See http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17201 for MP4 podcast although my patch did not fix it fully. There is also a conf file for ffmpeg. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97542 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is Olive One the answer?
It should be noted that this isn't a finished product at all. It's doing the the kickstarter model to get off the ground http://www.indiegogo.com//OliveONE The comments page reads like they are still designing: Hey Colin and Chris, the ONE currently only has speaker outputs. However the board has been designed in a way that we can add analog and digital outputs, we would however need to provide a special adapter. We will think about it and put it up for vote later in the campaign. If you read down the indiegogo page there was appear to be syncronisation: If you have more than one room and we hope you do you can simply add ONE to each room and play the same or different songs. It takes one simple button-click to connect ONE to your network (via WPS). Casual like almost as if it doesn't matter! The spec sheet for MusicOS sounds like it could be extended to be a full on Squeezebox player: Our Software Development Kit will allow developers to build the custom apps around your music experience at home. Our built-in community platform will allow you to vote on the apps you find valuable. The possibilities are endless: Live concert apps.Karaoke. DJ apps... and much more. For my money it's pretty much spot on and they're presenting it like we have a chance to get on at the ground floor and influence how it all works, Squeezebox fans could jump on this and show Logitech what their missing. smiggs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35768 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97539 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is Olive One the answer?
smiggs, you beat me to all the tech answers. From what I am reading it is almost as if this new Olive is focused to be the best of Sonos and Squeeze and at an affordable price. Now the devil is in the details but if they deliver on what they are saying it could be a pretty good solution. One issue I have is with the footprint of this thing. I have a few booms. One is in my kitchen on a counter. The one would be just too large to be put in the same place. Also right now they have no plans to ship with the ability to connect to your home stereo although they say the pieces are there to do it at a later date. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97539 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is Olive One the answer?
Reviewing their website just makes me sad that Logitech never knew what they were doing with Squeezebox. This Olive thing could be vaporware, but already it's got better marketing and design aesthetics than SB ever did. I hope they're successful - the day will come when we'll all need to update our SB ecosystems. Hopefully a solution like this will be semi-mature before that day comes. ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97539 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is Olive One the answer?
It would be great if Olive could use a VLC-based audio/media player as this app is free, open-source and can play just about anything. The latest version plays the brand-new Opus audio codec. I'm sure this approach would virtually eliminate questions like why isn't x stream playing? Is this possible in a hardwarebased audio streaming device? Tunein as the internet radio search portal would be great too.
