I have a small case which holds the Pi with HiFiBerry - I ordered the
HiFiBerry without the RCA sockets pre-soldered. I wired them to the
board and mounted them on the top of the case by drilling holes in the
case through which the sockets protrude, rather like one of the pictures
on the HiFiBerry web page. See
http://www.hifiberry.com/products/dac/soldering-hifiberry/

The piCorePlayer with HiFiBerry is working very well.

Is there an enclosure that will hold the Raspberry Pi along with a
HiFiBerry?

One of the appeals to me of the Raspberry Pi was the enclosures
available for it, but it seems the enclosures won't hold a HiFiBerry?

I appreciate the help.

Re: [slim] Soundcloud plugin: Broken?

2014-03-19 Thread maalt

Hmm. I can add tracks to my playlist using the option "SoundCloud URL".
All other menu options time out. Any pointer would be appreciated.

I highly recommend the Raspberry pi - HiFiberry - piCorePlayer
configuration as a squeezebox player. Easy to set up and sounds great.
I run mine with WIFI and connect the HiFiberry to my Home Theater audio
system. I have LMS running on a MacBook Pro.

AFAIK, Squeezeplug is primarily a server, with an option to include a
player. You can make a standalone player like a Squeezebox with a
Raspberry Pi + Squeezelite.

The simplest way might be the piCorePlayer:
https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home/how-to-1
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97803

That's basically a very small installation file (25MB) which does
exactly what you want: turn your Pi into a SB player.

1. The Raspberry Pi's onboard audio is of rather poor quality. You'd
need to hook up an external DAC to get decent results.

HiFiBerry and the Wolfson DAC built for the Pi might be viable alternatives.

AFAIK, Squeezeplug is primarily a server, with an option to include a
player. You can make a standalone player like a Squeezebox with a
Raspberry Pi + Squeezelite. I've done it and it works fine, with the
following caveats:

1. The Raspberry Pi's onboard audio is of rather poor quality. You'd
need to hook up an external DAC to get decent results. And that means
using either HDMI (which I've not tried) or USB. The Pi's USB subsystem
is known to be rather flaky. Whether any particular USB DAC works can be
hit-and-miss. I used a cheap USB-to-SPDIF converter based on the TI
PCM2704 chip (typically available on eBay for about $15) and it works,
but with some suspicion that it's not quite perfect.

2. Synchronization with other Squeezeboxes is not as good as with the
hardware players. I found it to be acceptable where the players weren't
obviously in earshot of one another, but not with them having
overlapping coverage.

I've now abandoned the Pi as a Squeezebox. My advice would be to
consider a Wandboard running CSOS rather than a Pi, which from all
accounts seems to be a much more robust platform.
