When we had the Big kitchen extension built I had 4 ceiling speakers

Fixed the problem. The clue was when you mentioned hw:device. I changed
the squeezelite setting to plughw: and that did the trick. The
piCorePlayers have been set to hw: for ages, so I think KQED must have
changed something about their stream that now requires plughw.

Thanks for your help.

Just tried through a Topping DX3PRO, audio output

It took about 10 seconds for playback to be audible :)

As the others have said - over-plumb for connectivity!

I'd go one step further and run it all in oversize conduit - even
placing some empty runs for later possibilities.

That way you can easily do new pulls if you have a flaky cable or if
something new comes out.

Think about what else you might be able to use wired network for -
security cameras, home automation gizmos, etc.

Don't forget about speaker outlets!

If nothing else, conduit stubs running down the walls and opening out
into the attic.

In my experience, many contractors are way behind the curve in planning
this type of thing, so you might want to get into the weeds with them.

[slim] Streaming problem

2020-11-25 Thread AngloCuencano

For the past couple of days, I have had a problem streaming KQED from
San Francisco:

I have 3 picorePlayers, all running piCorePlayer v7.0.0b6, one uses a Pi
A+ with analog output, and the other 2 use Pi Zeros with Pimoroni
phatDACs (simple TI5102 DAC in squeezelite settings). Apart from the
audio device setting, all 3 are set up the same. The stream plays on the
A+ system, but not with the Pi Zeros. The only setting I can find that
makes a difference is Player>Audio>Audio Startup Time. By default, this
is set to 0, and there is no sound, but the playing time increments. If
I set it to 0.25, there is a garbled sound output like chipmunks.

It *feels* like this problem might be related to the latest LMS update I
installed on the weekend, at least I only noticed this problem after the
update.

The strange thing is the replacement of the "http://"; by a "///./"

For Classic - LMS will have to do transcoding so there is addtional LMS
processing.
If this is not due to a typo then it may be due to a plugin. Look
through what 3rd party plugins you have installed.

Very odd. Needs to start with basics before looking for complicated
solutions.

Confirm the URL you have entered into the Tune-in box (or saved as a

No additional characters added/missing at beginning or end ?

If it is 2nd hand then on http://www.mysqueezebox.com it may still be
registered to previous owner, in which case you need to get it changed -

I'm afraid that bpa's knowledge is required to decipher that code :(:o

I would guess it is related to the player's ability to play flac, but
that is just a guess

Which player are you using and have you tried the AAC streams ?

In theory you should be able to simply plug it in to power (USB socket)
and Ethernet (same LAN as your local LMS) and it should appear as a
player in LMS within seconds.

Can you explain what issues you have?

Nowadays people would do the same with a Raspberry Pi for around 1/3 of
the price those boxes sold for when new (7+ years ago).

Thanks Philippe - I won't be streaming from a set of files - just from
the Tidal plugin - does that still count as a fixed format / sample rate
source without resampling kicking in?

When playing direct to the NA7004 as a UPnP device (without flow) it's
distracting listening to the album from Pink Floyd Dark, Side of the
Moon, in that there is a pause between the flow of the music from Tidal.
Not good at all. This is what I want to hopefully solve by streaming
Tidal with flow control (bit perfectly of course).

Re: [slim] Building a house: what would you do for whole-house audio?

2020-11-25 Thread agbagb

I'd just turn my little SB Radio up LOUD

But seriously, as others have said, ethernet cable everywhere, including
closets, garages, workshops, outdoor panel by the BBQ, etc etc. It is
so cheap to do when you're doing a big build or renovation; and can be a
pain in the ass to add or move later. I have all my ethernet cables
run back to my attached garage, where they all gather into a powered
D-Link switch. And the router feeds into that as well, through the
cabling, giving me reliable 'net access everywhere. I do still use wifi
(not least because there is always somewhere where you didn't put a LAN
outlet..), but copper wires are still mostly better. And my house
is all stone, so adding more points is troublesome.
