Re: [slim] text editor in piCore
The only caveat to WinSCP and a windows based editor. Even if you use Notepad++ or another editor that understands Unix Line endings, WinSCP can do text file Line ending conversions on the fly, and if not configured properly can leave you with quite a mess. WinSCP should automatically detect the linux server and automatically configure line endings...but make sure to double check piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM. Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex
Plex and LMS run on pretty much everything, so it comes down to how much time you have to build. I run a QNAP for plex and LMS with 90TB of stuff. The QLMS package runs 8.3 fine. You suggest you want off-site listening - whatever your NAS, do not expose ports to web, or you will one day find it all encrypted - use a private VPN for remote access. Sorry if thats obvious but a lot get caught out by leaving UPNP active. I probably should have added that if you are already familiar with vi, it is merely annoying and counter-productive. Of course, there are some who love it. There was a time when I used edlin in DOS, so I understand how vi could be seen as a vast improvement. But it boggles my mind that anyone could prefer it. All of this is entirely off-topic for the OP's question, but I hope by now he has settled on WinSCP, as recommended by Jim, or installed nano, if he's already familiar with that. Re: [slim] New modified SqueezeAMP batch?
If you have an extra, I would be interested in one. I'd like to have a modern unit to eventually replace a Touch, should one of my 2 devices succumb to old age. I'd like to get a head start coming up to speed on the requirements for such a unit. I'm not concerned about the cost. I'd need simultaneous optical and RCA out, Ethernet, but don't care about WiFi. I almost never look at the display since it lives in my server cabinet with the whole house audio amps and other equipment. Any reasonable case would be fine. I run LMS on my Mac. I'm not a hardware guy, and although competent enough to do assembly, I'd prefer to avoid breaking out in cold sweats trying to do anything more than snapping parts together and basic wiring. I've read through this thread, and the others, but still feel uncertain enough that I need to ask - would this unit meet these needs, and what would you recommend? Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex
Can someone suggest a build including OS or something pre-built that would literally serve my 3 purposes: NAS + Squeezebox server + Plex server. My personal opinion: assuming you don't have Pis sitting around idle, I'd go with a relatively beefy NAS which can run Docker. The latter allows you to run many services in a matter which (currently) is well supported by many projects. If you go with a relatively mainstream product like QNAP or Synology chances are you already have support for Plex apps built-in. Otherwise you run it in Docker. When I bought my NAS Docker was still a bit suspicious to me. It took me a while to understand it. But right now I'm running five to six containers continuously. And I like the simplicity with which I can test-run an application in a container and easily throw everything away if I'm not happy with it. Just my 2c. (but I still run LMS on a Pi, as it's easier in _my_ case to run off of git directly, and to deal with patches applied manually etc.) ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex
For many years I have had my music files on a 4 disk QNAP 419P NAS but I stopped running LMS on it some time ago as it's an Arm processor and only has 512mb RAM. It couldn't cope with lots of transcoding and the last Qnap approved version of LMS was 7.7.6. It is however great at doing its principal job which is file sharing. So I now have the QNAP which holds all the files and two separate production machines - one for LMS and one for Plex - that connect over NFS to the NAS. I have rebuilt the LMS machine a number of times but by always using the same mount point strategy I have always made existing playlists work. I also have numerous "dev" devices, Pi's etc which also connect to the NAS via NFS when required and a second offsite QNAP which syncs files on an overnight basis. There is a Pi based LMS at the same site with an NFS mount to the QNAP so when I visit I can play everything that I have in my main (home) office. I have considered Dockers but rejected the idea on the basis that it meant unnecessary expense on a new more powerful NAS when the one I have does what I ask it to. And it's much more intuitive than vi! For a non Linux person by far the easiiest method to edit a file is by using WinSCP. WinSCP connects exactly like an ssh client but gives you a graphical Windows like interface. Find the file you want to edit and right click on it and do Edit. For those that do this regularly add Notepad++ as the default Editor. I wanted to look at the contents of a few files in piCore to see how the Samba implementation works. I used ssh to get in and found the files I wanted (fstab, smb.conf). Nano was not present.
