Re: [slim] UE Radio or . . . ?
Also have an Archos 35 Home Connect. The quickest way I have found of using TuneIn is to hit the search icon and type in the name of the station you want - saves all that scolling about. For the BBC, TuneIn plays either the WMA or AAC streams natively (you can select which if you want). Sound quality from the Archos is not up to the standard of the SB radio, but still very good for such a small device in my view. Re: [slim] SB3 almost dead..
OK... here are the bones of it: 1) You will need a LM317T chip (the type in a TO220 package). Fortunately these are cheap and easily available. 2) You will also need a small clip-on heat sink for the LM317T. 3) When you have the above, unsolder Q3 from the circuit board and remove. 4) The LM317T will need to be soldered onto the circuit board. The attach points are: the end of the component marked 'LF125' nearest to D14 for the input pin; the end of D14 nearest the power socket for the output pin; the end of D14 furthest from the power socket for the adjust pin. 5) Now the fiddly bit: before soldering the LM317T is soldered in place, you will need to cut and bend the three pins so that when attached to the three points above, the chip and its heatsink lay parallel to the circuit board without touching any of the components underneath. 6) Solder the LM317T in place and check that the case can be reassembled without pushing the body of the LM317T onto the circuit board. 7) Test that everything is now working. 8) It is important to note that the LM317T is a linear regulator, so it will generate more heat than the original swith mode circuit. For that reason, it would be *very* advisabe to swich the SB3 off at the mains when not in use rather then leaving it powered on 24x7. I would describe the above as a bodge rather than a repair, but it saved one of my SB3s from the bin. Note that if you try the above, it is at your own risk. It may be worth askng in the DIY section of this board if anyone there can think of a more elegant solution than the above. -- Adam_F Adam_F's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80209 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB3 almost dead..
The issue is that the 1.2V supply to the CPU is shutting down soon after power on. Judging by the measurements you took the most likely causes in my view would be: 1) A hairline crack in a solder joint in the circuit around U17 and Q3, which opens up when things start to warm up. It would be worth examining the circuit board in this area with a magnifying glass to see if there is anything obvious. 2) Either Q3 or U17 is failing. If this is the case, unless you have access to the correct spare parts and are experienced with surface mounted components, it is not going to be easy to repair back into its original state unfortunately. Have you contacted Logitech to ask whether they can still repair SB3s ? If as I suspect the answer is no, I could suggest a 'quick and dirty' method of restoring the 1.2V supply to the CPU if you are handy with a soldering iron. Not entirely satisfactory as a repair, but you might want to give it a try if the only other option is binning the SB3. -- Adam_F Adam_F's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80209 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB3 almost dead..
It looks as if the problem is with the 1.2V supply to the SB3's CPU (the part marked IP3023 on the duaghter board under the wireless card). The problem I had was also with the 1.2V supply, but I am not sure if the cause is the same yet. As far as I can determine, the 1.2V supply is generated from the 5V line by U17 (switch mode regulator chip) in conjuntion with Q3 (FET), and then fed to the CPU via L4. If you have a look at page 5 of the datasheet for U17, you can see roughly what we are dealing with: http://www.chipsinfo.com/NJR/NJU7630.htm We need to narrow down the problem a little further - would you be able to measure the voltage at each leg of Q3 ? If at all possible, let everything cool down and measure the voltages again before the display goes blank. -- Adam_F Adam_F's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80209 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

A mobile phone handset will generate 2 Watts of RF energy typically, and a fair proportion of this will be absorbed by the body as the device is pressed up against the head. A Wi-Fi device generates 0.05 Watts typically and is genrally further away - put these together and any "threat" is orders of magnitude less. The fact that many live near regional or national radio and TV transmitters generating anything up to 1 million Watts seems to pass without comment. Not the whole story I know, but acknowledging this simple fact at least puts the "risk" from Wi-Fi into some sort of context. -- Adam_F Adam_F's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Overheating SB3 CPU ?
MrSinatra;355396 Wrote: > wow, scary. > > have u tried contacting support? i would think they may be interested > in getting the unit back to see what went wrong. I have been in touch with them and this has ended with EMEA support sending me a replacement SB3. Partly out of idle curiosity, and partly due to some enforced idleness caused by a bout of 'flu, I decided to track down the cause of the problem. It appears that the switch mode regulator (NJU7630) that generates the supply for the CPU has failed, as the output is now stuck at the supply voltage (5V) regardless of the input. The end result is that Q3 was passing about 2.7V to the CPU board, hence the hot CPU and the very hot Q3 due to the excess current it was passing. This is probably not directly repairable, as the regulator part is not available retail and even if it was, it hard to say what other damage may have been caused. [slim] Overheating SB3 CPU ?
My SB3 recently developed a fault in that it now invariably crashes after a brief period of use (display goes blank and no sound). It is now out of warranty, and as this is now the third hardware fault I have had with this unit, I am inclined to bin it rather than pay for a further repair. However, I thought I would make some attempt to diagnose the problem first. When this SB3 was repaired previously, the symptoms were exactly the same. On that occasion, the wireless card was found to be the cause and it was replaced. Based on a guess that I had the same issue again I replaced the wireless card myself, but this did not solve the problem. Removing the wireless card completely did not stop the crashes either, but the SB3 did run for considerably longer before doing so without the card in situ. Then I noticed that the CPU (IP3023) was running very hot. Holding a temperature probe against the CPU (i.e. not the best thermal contact), the probe read 100 degrees celcius after a few minutes. Is this normal (doubtful), or could this point to the root cause (a problem with the power circuitry feeding the CPU for example). Can anyone suggest where to look next ? Thanks - this is not going to be as easy a problem to solve as I thought. In the end I tried the command without the -ac and -demuxer parameters. Some Shoutcast streams play fine with this, but when I try to play others (or any Live365 streams at all) nothing happens, except for a message from Vista telling me that socketwrapper has stopped working, and SS eventually crashing. This is unfortunate, as it appears that all Live365 stations streaming at 32Kbps also use a sampling rate of 16KHz, which means that there is a whole class of stations no longer supported on the SLIMP3.
