Re: [slim] 2 Simple SC7 Upgrade Questions
After installing make sure you set the name of your SB. There is a bug that can render the SB unusable if you don't do this. Reinstalling the earlier version sorts it out though so it's not a permanent failure. -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44609 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3 Sometimes stops
I don't think this is the same problem that the other thread is discussing and that thread has grown a lot so I'll risk starting a new one. My SB3 (had it going on two years now) mostly plays perfectly fine. It's never crashed or shown any other signs of distress (except when I recently upgraded to SC7 but that's another story). However every now and again it finishes playing one track..and just stops. It doesn't do it very often and I can't find any pattern to it. Pressing play will cause it to resume and carry on as if nothing happened. System specs: SB3 using wired ethernet connection. Server: Dedicated machine. AMD3500/2GB of RAM Music: WMA VBR, maximum bitrate. I wouldn't have thought that the server would have any CPU issues - on live albums the gap between tracks is barely noticeable - but it is also running one of the grid computing applications. -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44642 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] squeezecenter - dissapointing
I quite liked the new look and feel. The lack of explanations on the settings page was a bit poor but for normal use it looks good. My only gripe at the moment is that it kills my SB3 but that might be because I didn't set the name. -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44503 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Another bug - player not found
I've gone back to 6.5.4 and it's working again. I might try SC7 again at the weekend. I'll define a name for the player and see if that helps. I'm surprised no-one else has seen this though as it wasn't exactly hard to reproduce :-/ -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44556 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Another bug - player not found
Not looking good for SC7 here at the moment. I just fired up the web page and it can't find my player - odd, since it was playing just fine an hour ago. Worse still the text says I should click the 'refresh button'. I don't see one. Does it mean I should refresh the web page? -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44556 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3+SC7 Irritating bug
I d/loaded and installed SC7 today and have discovered a minor annoyance. When I change the player settings the player stops responding to the remote. If I cycle the power to the SB3 it forgets the setting. I eventually found I can workaround the problem by using the SC7 web page to start the SB3 playing but it's a bit of a pain. Re: [slim] How much power does the squeezebox draw while on standby
I use electronic timers to switch stuff off. You can set them up to give different times at the weekend. The timers themselves draw a little current but judging from how cool they feel it's probably a miniscule amount. I have a power meter in my lounge and it's kind of cool to leave for work in the morning and see it displaying 0.00 :) In my case switching off my server, router, AV stuff (including Sky+ satellite PVR) saves me 130w an hour for 80 hours a week. That's 10.4 units a week which is around £80 a year. You could also use this as an excuse to buy some kit. Get a cheap laptop, fit a 24/7 hard drive in it and use that as a server. I did that for a while and it reduces server power consumption quite dramatically. -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44291 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Open Ports ... Security Issue?
Opening a port on your firewall is like unlocking a door on your house. The security implications depend on who or what is waiting behind that door. As long as the software that answers the "door" is robust and can't be duped there is no problem. Unfortunately it is very difficult to write software that meets those requirements. Even people trying to write the kind of the software that should expect to come under attack often don't get it right (think of all the IE, FF etc. patches that have to be issued). I don't want to cast aspersions but I'd be very surprised if SlimServer had been written with that level of security in mind. As for what might happen if someone breaks in using Slimserver:The worst case scenario is that they take control over the machine that SlimServer is running on without you knowing. From there they have full access to your network and can browse all the storage attached to it. -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30564 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Problems with Tina Turner :-/
My Slimserver (6.3.1) insists on listing albums by Tina Turner under both "Tina" and "Tina Turner". Why? How can I stop it doing that? Another question:I ripped an album and the information couldn't be found for it. Since then I've used Windows Media Player to correct the album title but Slimserver still calls it "Unknown 13-12-2006". [slim] Network always busy
As I posted earlier I've switched my server onto new hardware. Everything is working but I noticed that the network icon was always showing activity. My server isn't just a music server it's also my mail server and general 'houseNet server'. The fact it's a mail server and exposed to the outside world bothered me so I downloaded Ethereal to take a look. It turns out that my SB3 and the server are continuously exchanging multi-cast packets even while the SB3 is off. I don't think the server used to do that on the old hardware. Presumably it's the SB3 asking if anyone is there - but why is it doing it all the time? -- AndrueC AndrueC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6612 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26705 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
