Re: [slim] Darko Audio's recent video tribute to the Squeezebox (GOAT)

2022-12-22 Thread Browny

Definitely think these videos touch on the thing that still blows me
away: Squeezebox was so far ahead of it's time, it's still advanced 17+
years later!

Every Squeezebox I bought over the years is still working perfectly (a
decent selection - see below), and thanks to this community (and Michael
in particular) they more than keep pace with changes over time.

39529

Without a doubt the best Tech Investment I've made!

oh - and the Controller is arguably the only part that has become
redundant thanks to Smartphones, so doesn't get a lot of love these
days. In fairness it's easy to forget that the Controller was seen as a
must have component for the battle with Sonos 'back in the
day'sighdoes make you wonder what might have been.

Blows my mind really that Squeezebox still wipes the floor with Sonos
even after they've had over a decade to try to catch up!!

And final memory for me.I bought a Nokia N770 to use as a squeezebox
remote once upon a timeanyone still got a working one of those!!??
Bet that looks clunkier than a Squeezebox Controller now!!!

Agreed. Ive been around since SB2/3 and slimserver 6.

Best money I've ever spent on any electronics. It has literally
transformered how I can listen to music. I'd still be happy even if
things hadn't changed since then.

The fact that it has evolved with Internet music streaming.for
freeis a bonus. Simply the best value for three hundred pounds
nearly 8 years later!!

To put it in perspective..every PC I owned at the time has long
since died, or been superceeded.

I'd echo that this feels like the beginning of the end, but I've said
that before too!

I'm just content to enjoy the music these days. Squeezebox will always
have a place in my gadget heart even when (if) something better comes
along.

Thank you Slimdevices.

Sorry, but that's not true. The BB development environment is just
fine - the device is running an excellent JVM and you can develop
applications easily using the Eclipse plugin. In addition BB now has
App World for easy deployment of applications.

Personally I think the latest devices could make an excellent platform
for a remote, but I'm not convinced that there is sufficient demand for
it to warrent the development effort. Historically BlackBerry devices
have been corporate hand outs - this is changing and BB is certainly
much more popular in the consumer space than before so in time that may
change.

But even then the combination of:

-Compatible BB
-Squeezebox User
-Actually wants a BB Controller App

seems a small niche at best!

In addition the only way to connect to SqueezeboxServer would be when
on your home Wi-Fi with a direct TCP/IP connection (unless you exposed
your server to the internet). I understand that iPeng has been a
success on Apple, but that has 2 user bases to target in iPhone and
iPod Touch and I suspect that the iPod Touch makes up the majority of
iPeng users (just a hunch - nothing to back that statement up!).

2009-10-02 Thread Browny

Tbh I think the whole doom and gloom starting to spread is a bit of an
over reaction. Its just a website extra - you can turn her off! For
someone new to the whole idea of audio streaming its not that bad an
idea. I find it patronising to me, but thats because I already know
about the subject.

I posted a link to the old one because it worked for me, but it already
looks of its time and times do change. The new site is much more
consumer orientated, but thats probably because all the geeks have
already got a squeezebox and Logitech need to find some sales
somewhere!

The new products look good and are still very much in the spirit of the
original Slimp3 - their primary function is high quality audio.
Logitech have not taken the company off in a wild tangent doing
something else like video streaming. Now they just want to sell lots of
them - thats not a bad thing in my book.

Re: [slim] Slim Devices' crocodile in the bathtub

2008-11-30 Thread Browny

From what I've seen so far SD have been very good at listening to what
their customers have been asking for on these forums and developing it.
I'm sure all these threads are being watched with interest.

For me the Controller was a response to everyone banging on about the
Sonos remote. Same with the Boom - it came along because enough people
asked for it.

I'm sure that SD will be looking at iPeng et al with great interest
(not least because its once more killed off Sonos's USP). I agree that
there should be an official version and suspect that one could come in
time.

As to iPod/iPhone vs Controller I see these as very separate products
that can be made to overlap on functionality, but they cater to very
different markets. I think the case for overlapping customer bases is
suspect at best - simple reason being if you're an average iPod user
then your first port of call for home audio will be a dock for the iPod
rather than a network audio player.

The main beef I have about the Controller is that its too expensive to
justify (for me). That's not to say that I don't think its a superb bit
of kit, but given the myriad of other ways I have of controlling my SB3
its just not worth it. I'd rather spend the money on a Boom!

I don't have an iPod either for similar reasons - its a cool bit of
kit, but the only reason I would buy one is because I needed a portable
MP3 player. My BlackBerry does this just fine (btw Flipside on the BB is
excellent since it scrobbles to Last.fm) and I got it free with my
job. Again I'd rather spend my money on a Boom!

Can you guess what I want for Christmas??

Re: [slim] FLAC format for videos?

2008-10-01 Thread Browny

If you take FLAC as a container for lossless data then the nearest
equivalent for Video is Matroska (MKV files).

These are an extentible container for the audio/video codec (I
think!!), including hd content. The nearest equivalent to the
Squeezebox for video is the Popcornhour, which just happens to play
these files streamed across your network...sound familiar

Problem with all this Video stuff is there is NO legit way to rip the
files - therefore no large company is going to touch all this with a
bargepole.

Pity

Having searched around I found the following link on Remote Central:

Basically it looks like Onkyo amps are picky about the level being used
on the direct port.

Is there any way to change the output level on the SB3 headphone port
when using IRBlaster like this?

For info the Wiki link mentioned previously in this thread doesn't work

Re: [slim] Is Slimserver sustainable as Open Source?

2007-02-20 Thread Browny

Personally I started with Slimserver when it lived at 6.2 - it was
usable, buy did not do what I wanted...

Simply because it was open source I was able to communicate with the
development team and get MY Slimserver to act as I wanted (I wanted to
stop having to scan your file system and have a method to add albums to
the database as I ripped them). Dan (the lead developer) made the
effort to assist me with this.

I now have a customised Slimserver 6.5.1 that does exactly what I need
- and what is more my Squeezebox/Slimserver is now not only the the
coolest gadget I ever bought, but is also now also performing exactly
as I would want it to.

There are issues with Slimserver 6.5 that I would like to see dealt
with better, but that comes down to personal preference...

As my daytime job I am also a software developer and have to filter the
personal preference from the 'enhancement to the system' that gets
worked on - but my system is 'closed source' - mainly because my user
base is the Business (who just expect IT to work). Ultimately at lot
of what I do is a measure of benefit vs. cost - Sooner or later,
whether this is closed or open source, you need SOMEONE to make that
judgment - to be fair to SD this is something they do very wellI
can see that my requirements are not those of the masses.

BUT...because it is open source I can change it for me if I want to.

Someone previously mentioned M$ - Try doing what I have done with a
closed source model - it would be impossible.

As a final signoff - Slimserver is a FANTASTIC piece of
software...please remember that before you have a go at it...

If you don't like it, you can join in and make it better (have a look
at the Nokia 770 Skin, which is a superb example of someone wanting
something and then making it available to the masses) - this is
something that can never happen under a closed source model.

Peace!

Browny

[slim] Re: Open Ports ... Security Issue?

2006-12-12 Thread Browny

My take on this has always been that opening a port is not the issue its
the confidence you have in the software thats listening on that
port

The questions should really be:

- 'how resilient is Slimserver' to attacks (e.g. Buffer Overruns)

I guess thats one for the developers to answer.

- 'is Slimserver a target for hackers'

Probably not at the moment - security through obscurity and all
thatalthough as Mac owners are learning sooner or later that wil
disappear..

2006-11-25 Thread Browny

aahh - ok.

You're correct in stating that you need to download a codec for
Shorten.

What Operating System is Slimserver running on?

Personally I downloaded a RPM to install on my ClarkConnect box from:

http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/dries.ulyssis.org/fedora/fc4/i386/RPMS.dries/shorten-3.6.0-1.2.fc4.rf.i386.rpm

Windows will probably be a download from:

http://etree.org/shnutils/shorten/binary/windows/shorten-3.5.1.zip

There should be installation instructions in there.

Hope this helps.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-19 Thread Browny

On reflection I'm dissappointed about all this, but to a certain extent
I don't know why.

What I have always loved about the Squeezebox is that it married my
interest in music and hi-fi with my love of IT. This was then made
even stronger by the fact that I could read the source and understand
how it worked and even tinker with my system when I felt the need.

BUTfundamentally I am not a mainstream user. Non-techy friends
have been blown away by what the Squeezebox device can do, but once I
told them what it cost and what was needed they were not always so
keen.

I think the problem here is that Slimdevices has become too successful
to continue as it was. Media Streaming is clearing an up and coming
market and SD are not going to be able to continue forever on ripped
CDs as a source - CD is a dated format now and I'm sure the music
industry would dearly love to hasten its demise. Online music and DRM
is going to be the future whether we like it or not.

For SD to continue to move forward they do need to appeal to the mass
market - it can be done as Apple have proved. This is where a link
with Logitech makes more and more sense.

I suspect the future will be to embrace DRM and get down to a mass
market price point. Otherwise I fail to see how Logitech can get a
return on their investment. This is a real opportunity for there to be
a SD device in every living room - the only shame would be that it may
not be in mineThere will always be another start-up coming along
that delivers what I want!

It does feel like the end of an era, but to quote the late great George
Harrison 'All things must pass'.

As already stated by stinkingpig its easiest to use the built in
version (which is v5). The version that ClarkConnect installs is
v4.1.12 which is getting on a bit. One odd thing to watch for is in
the 'Running Services' page on the ClarkConnect web interface - if you
have the official CC MySQL installed, but not running, when you start
Slimserver you'll see that the CC MySQL is showing as running even
though it is not.

Out of curiosity I have tried 4.1.12 with Slimserver 6.5.0 (following
the instructions in the wiki) and it appeared to work fine, but as the
Slimserver Database is the only one on the server it seems easier to
stick to the bundled version.

[slim] Analogue VU and Replaygain

2006-09-27 Thread Browny

A question for the experts:

My collection of Flac files have Replaygain tags attached. My
squeezebox is set to use the 'Smart' setting for volume since I use my
squeezebox mainly on random play (the volume changes drive me nuts).

Generally I'm a happy bunny with all of this, except

I also love the Analogue VU screensaver, but since all my Replaygain
metadata is set to bring the volume to -7db or so I end up with the
needles using only a 3rd of the scale - it reminds me of when you used
to get cassettes that had not used all the dynamic range on the tape -
I just find this irritating!!

I've lived with it for a while, but today I've been using the
Transporter skin on the new version of softsqueeze and notice that
despite having 'smart' replaygain selected, the VU meters in the right
hand screen were displaying the track with volume levels before
replaygain is applied.

Is there any way to get this the same on my Squeezebox?

Cheers,

Browny

I've heard in the past of ISPs downgrading your link if they detect

blocking audio streams.

I suspect that Tiscali have a 'fair usage policy' which basically
covers them to block any traffic that might actually use the

I think that the problem with trying to market SB to the masses is that
when you try to describe it to someone the response you usually get is

It's the sort of product that you don't realise you need until you play

http://www.clarkconnect.com/

There is a decent (if a bit old) review of what it can do at
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2004/10/28/review_clarkconnect/

Its free for home use and is perfect intro to using Linux as a server
OS - its designed to run 'headless' and has a very well thought out Web
Interface for managing the box through the browser.

You can pick and choose what modules you want to load in the Web
interface (for example installing MySQL was a breeze).

Finally as it is Fedora Core based it can use the RPMs for Slimserver.

However if you still want to use the PC as a desktop as well then I
would go with the flow here and recommend Ubuntu for that.

of the downsides to switching to MySQL was loosing Moose. Thanks for

Just a question for the future - If your running on MySQL is there any
need to snapshot the whole database into a moo file? I appreciate in
the past this was necessary due to SQLite locking issues. MySQL takes
that limitation away and its also a lot quicker as well.

Could a future version just use the database directly?

Just out of interest I've been listening to the slimscrobbler station -
It's a bit ecclectic, but actually rather good. Seems we must all have
good taste in music as well as music players!

Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a
network music player?

- Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday!
- No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands!
- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

I think you've missed the point of a Beta - it is part of the QA
process. Constructive feedback on the issues you've found to the
developer would be more useful.

If you're after something more 'rich' as an interface I can recommend
Moose. (not on a 770 tho!!)

Looks like your Slimserver is talking to the database ok, but does
appear that one of your tracks is overflowing the track length field
(secs) field in the database - wierd.

I have seen a couple of posts elsewhere about issues running Slimserver
on MySQL 5 - is it possible to try it on MySQL 4.1?

Cheers,

 I'm installing this via ssh/putty on a headless Ubuntu machine - I
don't think tray icons are going to work for me!

Download the MySQL PHP Admin Client from:

http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php

This gives you a browser interface into MySQL on your Ubuntu machine.

From here it should be pretty straightforward to create a database,
create a MySQL user account (e.g. Mine is called SlimDB), Make sure the
account has full priviliges on your new database and can access
locally.

You then should be able to follow the wiki ok.

Hope this helps. I'm at work at the moment so don't have access to my
server. If you need any more info I can check this evening.

Good Point - to be fair to Slimdevices though SQLite is still the
default for now. I suppose the wiki will catch up when MySQL is the
default.

One of the things that I believe the developers are looking at for the
switch is how to automate all this.

In the meantime it should be possible to create a little script that
can be run on MySQL to set things up - I'll have a look into this.

Install it onto your Ubuntu box. You can then use the browser on your

that respect.

re your rant - thats why I use ClarkConnect. Simple web interface - I
installed MySQL by selecting it in a list. It even installed
MyPHPAdmin automatically for me. Linux purists will wince at this, but
it was very easy to do.

Better leave it now though - Don't want to start a Linux distro war on

[slim] Re: When should I switch from SQLLite to MySQL?

2006-01-21 Thread Browny

I have updated from using SQLite to MySQL (4.1) and found performance to
be MUCH more to my liking - in particular in relation to doing a
complete rescan. I'm currently running 6000 flacs on a ClarkConnect
1.3Ghz Athlon Server with 512Mb RAM. There are no latency issues for
that I can see - searches included.

The reason I switch was to allow me to view and update the Slimserver
database while slimserver is running.

If you look at Slimserver's roadmap you will find that MySQL is the way
Slimserver is going for the future. Why not early adopt? It is pretty
painless (see the wiki) and you can go back very easily if you don't
like it.

One final note of caution - I have seen a couple of posts relating to
issues running on MySQL 5. Stick with 4.1 for now.

[slim] Re: Is slim still good in 2006 ?

2006-01-13 Thread Browny

Interesting one this.

Personally I think one of the great things about the Squeezebox is that
it is essentially a dumb device. For me the obvious benefit of this is
the sound quality.

I can't help thinking that adding a processor is going to introduce a
lot of noise inside the case (try listening to the soundcards in PCs -
its not pleasant). I'm sure Slim would manage to engineer a way around
this, but that would imply more complexity and higher cost too.

[slim] Re: SlimServer server requirements

2006-01-11 Thread Browny

There is no way that Slimserver puts enough load on the disk for you to
need raid for performance issues (unless you're planning to run a very
large number of Squeezeboxes at the same time).

Myself I have a standard IDE 200Gb Drive that holds my music colletion
(for now at least - Squeezebox has started me buying CDs at an alarming
rate!). I use a hardware Raid for backing up 1 disk (mirroring) to
another so I don't have to re-rip all my CDs if a Hard Drive fails!!

The one thing I would recommend is to make sure you have a wired
connection between your server and your router. Wireless works fine
for me, but 2 hops over wireless connections just puts the stabilty of
playback over the edge.

Yes should do. Each release of the database comes with an upgrade
script that get applied when Slimserver starts. Normally this script
is just incrementing the version number, but occasionally the structure
of the tables may change.

[slim] Re: Backing Up the Slimserver Database

2006-01-09 Thread Browny

You might want to try coming to this from a different direction.

The problem you're encountering is a file lock on the db file when the
backup runs.

If you were to switch to using MySQL then you could either use the
database backup features available in the database, or even run
scheduled tasks to copy the records from one db to a spare.

Switching to MySQL is fairly painless - see the wiki below:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MySQL

If its an Apple product it will probably:

- Look Fantastic (going to struggle to beat SB3 though)
- Be easy to use (as long as you have a Mac!)
- Have a battery life you can measure in seconds
- The Battery will die 2 seconds after the warranty expires
- Not sound as good as the competition
- Be a sealed unit so it can't be fixed

...and best not to have one from the first batch as there is bound to
be some kind of display feature!
