font size! The large fonts on the SB3 are what made me buy one.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox + Spotify + PS3 = ???

2009-09-29 Thread Declan Moriarty

Yes it does work with the free version. You have to use the address in
the brouser of:-

http://serverip:5800

where serverip is the ip address of the server you are using. You can
also use the name of the server if it has a name. The VNC server will
download a Java applet to the browser that has to be installed. After
this happens it does an authentication check if you have set it up.
After that it puts up another window with the desktop.

This presupposes that the PS3 will allow you to run java applets!

Re: [slim] HowTo: Prevent server from suspend/hibernate while Squeezecenter playing?

2009-09-27 Thread Declan Moriarty

You might want to look at Windows: Prevent Standby plugin. The reason
it is for windows is that it uses the Win32::API with the kernel32
command. If you change this command in the Plugin.pm file in the
C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Slim\Plugin\PreventStandby
directory (this will be in the
../SqueezeCenter/server/Slim/Plugin/PreventStandby directory on Ubuntu).
With the SqueezeCenter directory being where programs are normally
stored in Ubuntu. If you cange the Win32::API command to a linux
command to switch off power management you should be OK. Probably the
best thing to do is to copy the PreventStandby directory to something
like PreventStandbyLinux and make the change to the Plugin.pm file.
Note that there is an install.xml file with xml detailing the plugin
name etc. One of the first lines in this file is an id tag that looks
like this:-

idBFACABFD-6334-4743-95BA-43A60E159560/id

How this is generated I don't know. Would a coppied plugin break if
this line ws coppied? If one got rid of it would the plugin still work?
How was it generated in the first place?

The plugin was wirtten by Julian Neil. He might be able to give
pointers on these matters. If you did copy the plugin it would be
polite to add a revision in the header of the Plugin.pm file stating
that the plugin ws adapted for Ubuntu.

Note that the last line of the install.xml file has:-

targetPlatformWindows/targetPlatform

Note this is the second to last line as the last line has the
/extension tag on it!

You will need to remove Windows from the targetPlatform tag and replace
with Linux.

This presupposes that there is a linux bash shell command to switch off
suspend mode!

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-09-27 Thread Declan Moriarty

It won't work with SqueezeNetwork. DSBridge streams (broadcasts)
spottify over you lan from your PC. Spottify normally runs from your PC
anyway. If you don't use DSBridge you have to use the Wave Input
plugin. DSBridge generates an mp3 stream from anything that uses
DirectSound. It also makes DirectSound sound better! Since
SqueezeNetwork doesn't use your PC you can't use it with Spottify or
DSBridge or Wave Input Plugin. All these things require SqueezeCenter.

Re: [slim] Best of Luck - moving on...

2009-09-14 Thread Declan Moriarty

I am happy with my SqueezeBox 3. The touch sounds interesting. The
only thing that worries me about is is the fact that it requires a USB
drive to be plugged in if using the built in server. This would mean
scanning a large music collection would be dreadfully slow compared to a
server using internal IDE drives. Also since the internal server of the
Touch is operating on the Touch only (no web interface), if something
happens to the Touch display you are stuck. At least I can control SC
from my computer and my SqueezeBox. I would only be able to control the
built in SC on the Touch from the Touch. Although I would be able to
play it on my PC using SqueezePlay. I wouldn't have the option of using
SqueezeSlave with a web interface.

Surely something like intergrated CD/ripping/server solutions that are
sold by places like cooltipia or ripcaster are better than the touch
since no USB drives lying arround (faster DB scan).

Another point about Sonos. Surely the Sonos has less information
than SqueezeBos is untrue. This is exactly the same as the duet. The
reciever has no display the display is in the SBC/iPhone. And Sonos has
an iPhone client. Sonos has a controler (and has a new touch
controler). I chose the SB3 because I couldn't read the Sonos
controller and couln't try out the SBC but realiesed it was probably
going to be extemely difficult to use.

With the new server software in the Touch, it appears that anybody
having an existing installation can't use the Touch without transfering
there library to the Touch and USB drive combination? And a Touch
would'nt like a SB3 + Boom + SC server installation?

Probably not, but keep the CD's! You don't know how good you backups

about LP's now seems stupid. They sound boxy and you have all these

Re: [slim] Play music files from outside music library ?

2009-07-09 Thread Declan Moriarty

Sorry about that. I have checked on my Ubuntu System on a USB drive
that I use occasionally and I cannot create a symbolic link. You are
using an external USB drive for you music library. I tried to make a
symbolic link on to a USB stick and failed. The stick ws formatted to
FAT-32. It think this may be the problem. Creating a symbolic link in
the linux system works fine. Using the GUI to create it if fine. But
using the GUI to move the link to the USB stick doesn't work. You might
have to try a USB stick formatted to ext3 to see if that would work.

Re: [slim] need help in displaying song titles

2009-07-08 Thread Declan Moriarty

Yes you can display song titles only rather than going into Music
Library-Album route.

You have to go into squeezecenter on the PC and goto Settings then
Player and Basic Settings and Menus.

This will bring up the Menu Customisation page. There is a list of
items in the Home Menu at the top of the page. There is a list of
Inactive Menu Items lower down the page. One of these is Songs.
Select this and click the Add button. The Songs entry will now appear
in the Home Menu. This will present a list of all the songs in your
music library. Note it lists all the track 1's then the 2's etc. It
dosn't do it is Album order!

You can do this. Make a symbolic link to the desktop in your music
directory. on the comand line you can use the ln -s command:-

ln -s desktop directory music directory/desktop

Then go into squeezecenter and check if it is seeing it. Go to Music
Library and select the Music Folder option. The contents of the Music
Folder should be displayed. Then look for your Desktop symbolic link.
Click this and you should see the contents of the desktop. Then verify
this on your player.

[slim] Is it safe to keep an SB3 in stand-by all the time?

2009-07-08 Thread Declan Moriarty

I have a second hand SqueezeBox 3 that came with a UNIFIVE power supply
that gave up the ghost. I replaced it with the more modern replacement
power supply whitch is far better! It doesn't get nearly as hot!
However the power supply does get warm but not overly so. The

Should I unplug it when not in use?

Some people say they see red lines in the display. This isn't
happening to mine yet. Does keeping it on (in stand by) make this more
likely?

Thank you in advance.

The SB3 is very reliable as far as wireless connections are concerned.
Are you sure it is software related? This sounds like what my SB3 was
doing just recently. It was the power supply cutting out. I had the
old UNIFIVE power supply in the UK. I replaced it with the more modern
power supply from At-Tunes in the UK. It works far better now. The
power supply doesn't get nearly as hot as the first one. No spontainous
cutting out and restarting. My one got gradually worse after it started
doing it. The times to the cut outs from initial plug in were getting
smaller each time.

Re: [slim] user experience with 7.3.3 = worst

2009-06-30 Thread Declan Moriarty

One problem why dynamic IP Addresses can possibly be difficult using the
SqueezeBox products is that SqueezeBox doesn't use DNS! I have 2 PC's.
Both have different computer names. I refer to them using the names not
the IP Addresses. My firewall uses the name of my 2nd PC NOT its IP
address. The squeezeBox uses the IP Address since it dowsn't appear to
have a DNS entry! There is a player name in SqueezeCenter but this is
only in SqueezeCenter and not the DNS! Considering people have
connectivity issues with Duets/Controllers this seems to be a major
design oversight.

No wonder people are using static IP's - they have no choice!

[slim] Slim Services Squeezebox 3 Power Supply cutting out and getting hot

2009-06-24 Thread Declan Moriarty

I have a Slim Services Squeezebox 3 I bought on ebay in February and the
power supply is getting hot and has started cutting out quickly. It
more often than not will not work at all. It is a UNIFIVE power

Output Power: DC 5V 2A.

Is there a better power supply than this available in the UK? The idea

not in use.

The Squeezebox works OK Thank God, it is only the power supply that is
the problem.

Re: [slim] Visually Impaired

2009-06-09 Thread Declan Moriarty

I am registered blind in the UK and have bought a Slim Devices
squeezebox 3 (with Slim Services) on the front from eBay. Very good
product. I did research on these products and found the Squeezebox was
the best for my requirements. I wanted to connect it to my Hi-Fi.

I chose not to get the Boom because I wanted to connect the device to
the Hi-Fi and having speakers built in wasn't necessary and was too
expensive.

The Duet was out because the remote I felt was difficult (very hard to
read - no magnification available). I tried to see the remote in action
but was unable to do so. I saw the Sonos remote in action but it was
impossible to read so that was out. There is an Internet Radio from the
Blind available from the British Wireless For The Blind Fund in the in
the UK but they wanted £27 or so I think par year for the privilege of
Internet Radio that I wasn't prepared to pay. (To be fair they were
offering Talking Newspapers and RNIB's streaming Talking Book Service
(although you have to pay for that separately)).

I do have some sight so can read the display of the Squeezebox and the
large fonts are marvellous. Even the smaller fonts are readable up
close. The viewing angles are good, and the remote control is good.

Having a Duet controller that could talk to you or one that could be
magnified would be useful. You could then control Squeezeboxes, Booms
and receivers. The idea of buying a mobile phone and Talks software
just to control a music player whose remote control is unusable doesn't
appeal. I have just replaced my 10 year old inaccessible mobile phone
with a Motorola F3 Fone that is excellent. It doesn't have wi-fi
internet capabilities but it was less than £20. I have found it
immensely difficult to get accessible mobile phones in UK. The shops no
nothing and don't take responsibility!

Audio feedback as to where you are in menus seems a good idea at first.
But I wonder how useful it would be in practice (I use print not
Braille). The problem is that nearly all the menu options are either
your music collection or internet radio stations. The way Rock Box
solves this is to have Voice Files for fixed menus and .talk files that
go into your Music Library and are played every time you select a menu
item. As you scroll down the menus the .talk files are read out to you.
Rockbox is open source firmeware for MP3 players. I have an iAUDIO X5
which is great with Rockbox!

The comment about Harmony remote controls was interesting. Checking on
Amazon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0012RHQN4/41208-21/?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

I find it is a touch screen remote! Again small type on the screen and
poor contrast. The rest of the remote looked OK, but because of the
touch screen and the small type it would be useless for a totally blind
person and very difficult/ next to useless for someone who has severe
sight loss.

I worry about how long the Boom will be in production given the
emphesis on the Duet. What are the supplies of VFD's like?

Note although you can control these players using a laptop, I didn't go
down that route since I wanted a stand allone music streamer not a fully
fledged laptop. To have to buy a laptop just to access a Reciever
because I couldn't use the Duet controler rather defeated the purpose.

Finally the Squeexebox 3 is an excellent product - the only affordable
accessible Internet Radio/Music Streamer on the market. The Boom
replaces it in this category. However the Boom has it's own speakers.
For someone like me who has a Hi-Fi already this is a bit disappointing.
You have to get it online new where you can or go second hand.
(Although Second Hand is cheaper). The idea that the SqueezeBox 3 could
disappear to be replaced only with the Boom or unusable Duet; or Very
Expensive Transporter doesn't appeal.

One final general suggestion would be to make the players
Squeezeboxes/Duets/Receivers/Transporters use DNS names. This would
allow people to use DCHP servers properly without having to re-configure
things each time the player had it's address changed. The player name
at the moment is used by the server and is not part of the DNS system.
My firewall has my 2nd PC's DNS name programmed in, but my Squeezebox IP
address.

Again the Squeezebox is a very good player. And again a
talking/magnified Duet would be VERY useful. Being able to use the
database in the Music Library in SqueezeCenter is very good. In Rockbox
when you use the Database this items are spelled out to you. Although
there is no speech in SqueezeBox being able to read the menus in large
print on the display and navigate in Albums rather than through the
Artist/Albums Directories that I have in my Library is very welcome!
