Re: [slim] So regret to buy SB3
As I see it, as long as the SB operates like a thin client and must rely on a server to operate, there's little point in supporting UPNP at all. By itself, it cannot connect to a server and directly access files. Adding such capability would be a drastic departure from the server (slimserver) / client (SB/Transporter) relationship that exists now. Not that it wouldn't be a nice feature, but it's apparent to me that is why UPNP support does not exist and likely won't with out an entirely new product. -- GlennT GlennT's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10243 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37600 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Speaker Recommendation
I've become a fan of Paradigm speakers, and have a pair of Monitor 7 floorstanders that I use with our Squeezebox. Those are out of that budget, but I've heard good things about the Atoms and Titans, both from the Performance line. They should be $220 or $250 for a pair, respectively, depending on your local dealer. The lowest I auditioned were the Esprits at $450, and probably would've been happy with those before hearing my uncles Studio 20s. At any rate, they're a good budget wise brand IMHO. I also run a Yammie receiver (RX-V1300) BTW. For about $430 (perhaps less if you have a generous dealer), the Mini Monitors would be a nice step up. -- GlennT GlennT's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10243 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36925 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pros/cons of unplugging my SB3?
Board creep and motor fatigue are two big factors that used to plague PCs, and both have improved significantly over the years. More items are integrated or mechanically fastened down these days, and drive technology is simply better. Even if you leave you computer on, most are set to spin down the drives anyway. This has been reasonably true for the last 10 years, save the unfortunate few that had budget build Quantum Bigfoot drives in the late 90's (5.25 drives take more ummf to spin up). I'm a network administrator, and I've never noted a difference. I have a PC at home that is nearly 7 years old, all original components, and has been powered on and off daily through that entire span of time. The one next to it ran for 9 years, before being mothballed, then recommissioned for Slimserver. That said, my slimserver is on 24/7, just as our servers at work are on 24/7, for availability. Power consumption is minimal anyway, but I see no reason to leave something on based solely on the old lifespan arguement. Dynamic addresses (i.e. DHCP) have never been a great option for servers. As already mentioned, if you assign the slimserver a static IP, or reserve it in your DHCP server, your SB won't have trouble finding the server anymore. I actually like the reserve option, since the IP will return, even if you reinstall or switch the OS. -- GlennT GlennT's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10243 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35792 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] FF / Rewind?
Ben Sandee;202707 Wrote: I'm unable to find anywhere where FF/RW support is even an advertised feature. Transcoding is advertisted and does work. Ben Transport functions are so universal that I believe it is only natural to expect them to behave univerally. I wasn't expecting it to everything to be perfect, but I was certainly disappointed with the clumbsy FFW and RRW; really the only disappointment honestly. Also, not having a stop button still catches me off guard, though less so since I use a universal remote with pause mapped to stop. I love the simplicity of the remote and the interface, but I would definately support additions of separate track advanced/reverse and FFW/RWD, and maybe even stop. It's only 3 buttons. As it stands, I find myself having to think everytime I want to FFW to the middle of a track, taking my focus away, and that's just not something I have ever had to do with any other device. The actual behavior is not unlike other software application, as you even run into similar situations with Windows Media Player and the like, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be prudent to seak solutions for those limitations. Re: [slim] home network wows
As said, in a peer-to-peer scenario like this, you need the same user name and password set on both machines. You can log in as different users on each machine, but the accounts must exist on the machines you want to access. example: user1 is primary user on machine1 with pass Abc123 user2 is primary user on machine2 with pass Xyz789 (primary, in that is the user that you usually log into that particular machine). For user1 to access machine2, an account with the same name (user1) and password (Abc123) must also exist on machine2. That is, if you want it to be seamless. You *can* map a network drive, and select connect as another user, and enter in the credentials for user2. I use that method when my computer is logged in as a user without a password (guest account). Also, RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is a great tool, but the remote machine (the one you want to be headless) must be running XP Pro (or Windows 2000 server or Server 2003). XP Home only supports remote assistance, and not on demand connections. -- GlennT GlennT's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10243 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35072 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] DSL vs Cable
I've also had both. In addition to depending on the ISP, much can depend on your individual situation. Our home is more than 80 years old, and the phone lines coming into the house, and through the basement, is quite old. During bad storms, the connection is *sometimes* sporadic. Also, the actual thoroughput of DSL can vary greatly, depending on your distance from the switching station (CO). We're actually more than 1000ft out of SBC's range, and although Earthlink is simply a resellar of SBC services, they somehow can break the 14k ft SBC rule. Our speed isn't the best, but it's more than good enough, given the low cost. Streaming radio has not been an issue. Comcast broadband was great, though expensive, and offered far more bandwidth than we needed. Plus, I wanted to get Dish Network for some channels I had been yearning for. At any rate, the ONLY problem I ever had with Comcast was with the splitter outdoors. To get the best possible signal to the modem and keep amps out of the path, a 2 way splitter is often installed at the head end; often outdoors, as in my case. If you get the optimal 15db (IIRC), 7.5db goes to the modem, and 7.5db goes to your TVs. Ours would fail about once a year, due to exposure to the elements. I never had the time or energy to move it indoors, or install a weather proof box. Both provide solid service, with faults that are specific to our situation. -- GlennT GlennT's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10243 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
