[slim] MacPro Users-Anyone using Digital Into the MP with SB3?
I just got a MacPro 2.66 Refurb. I've been flipping back an forth between the SB3 which is playing through a powered speaker set-up. Sometimes I want to use iTunes mostly to play DRM'd music files. I also have a USB powered headphone amplifier. So that is another reason to use the MacPro. Would it make sense to take the Optical TOS Link out and feed it into the MacPro's digital in, and essentially use it as a source switcher between the SB3 and iTunes? -- Jazz1 ---- Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SBR as wireless bridge?
I've got a MacPro 2.66 Powermac coming. It has no wireless. I currently use a laptop with an external HD to store music on. It connects wirelessly and I use the SB3 to control the music. I had used the SB3 to give Internet access to a Dell running Ubuntu as it did not have a wireless card. It worked fine. It is now out of the picture. So I know the SB3 can host wireless access for a computer through its Ethernet port. So tonight for an experiment I hooked the Mac laptop up to the SB3 to see how it might work. Once I cut the wireless connection on the laptop, the Network system preferences gave me a green light, but said it could not obtain an IP address, and off course the music library running through the laptop would not play. Forgive me on this, but it seems like I can't have it both ways. The laptop can't act as a music server when it is relying on the SB3 for a network connection? I assume when I put the Mac Pro 2.66, acting as the server, I will run into the same problem. Any suggestions? I'm going to try to have the Apple Store install a Extreme Wifi card in the Mac Pro but I've heard there have been a lot of issues on these retrofits as the 2.0 and 2.66 (now end of life) did not come standard with Bluetooth or Airport Wifi. -- Jazz1 ---- Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44846 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Mac Mini, iTunes and cover art
I just bought and used Coverscout in order to see cover art via Slimserver on my Safari Browser. Though it worked in restoring my ability to view cover art of my music selection I've found a unwanted result. When I look at "New Music" Slimserver is now designating some of my old music as new. From what I can tell this so called new music is simply old music that I have had Coverscout find album art for. I'm still rescanning my library, and I hope I see some kind of recovery of what might be truly new music when I query Slimserver via my browser. I suppose it is not the end of the world, but I guess I didn't know Coverscout was somehow going to re-calculate my library based on the addition of cover art to older music. Other than that I'm happy with Coverscout. I wish Apple would let iTunes work better with Slimserver. How about it Mr. Jobs, since you hate DRM now why not open up Fairplay so Slimserver can server up my iTunes library of about 2,000 songs. Until then I'll be buying CD using Amazon.com Prime/used CD's. Seems to me the end user who is legally buying music is the one who is being penalized. Just wondering if anyone else has done this with such old hardware? -- Jazz1 Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26274 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Scanning Server
That is great news regarding future updates that will assist with this problem. I sometimes pump in two or more music CD's and hate to have to wait to hear them while the scanning is going on. Some obvious ideas but I hope they help. Is your iMac falling asleep, is your Energy Saver pref. set to sleep HD when possible? Are you still logged on to the Squeezebox network. So I hope this helps until a real pro comes along. -- Jazz1 ---- Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Parallel WiFi network connection does the trick! Mac Heavy ; )
I've been limping along on an old Apple Graphite Basestation. No "G" of course, and limited encryption options. It really pumps out around the house, but with two kids on WiFi, me and the Squeezebox the Squeezebox has been dropping the music more often than I liked. Only one kid has a "G" Wifi card in their computer, and the other only has "B" access via a laptop and a desktop, all Mac of course ;) I had read that one "B" connection dumbs down the "G" network to "B". So I wanted to avoid that. Also the old Graphite won't bridge to the Airport Express. Have to get an Airport Extreme/AE set-up for that. To make a short story long, I'm now driving down "diamond lane" in my house by tasking the Squeezebox and my MacBookPro to the second "G" AE connection. Try it you'll like it! If I get brave I'll drill a hardwired ethernet connection to the server which is a floor below the SB. Does anything this would be even faster for the SB? -- Jazz1 Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26132 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Added a Santana III two CD set to my server tonight. Is it normal for music to drop in and out while the server scans for new music. Is it my 1.25 Dual Mac G4? I'm only going to have it scan playlists after I trim my iTunes playlists down. I'd like it to only scan when I want it to, or at some pre-set time so it doesn't cause my server to stall, or music to stall. I suppose it could be WiFi problems not the scan. But the message regarding scanning did come on the Squeezebox screen and I did have a lot of drops for a while. [slim] How Often Does Slim Serve Scan for New Music?
How often does it scan on? Can I control this? I'm thinking some of my dropouts are happening when it decides to scan. I put the new Tom Petty CD on my server and then went upstairs and I had stalls. I did see text notice on Squeezebox telling me that it was scanning. Also, really weird, during some of the stall the CD music stopped and I got some kind of chime going, that I don't think was part of the song. Is this some kind of alarm about stalling, or should I lay off the sauce ;) -- Jazz1 ---- Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26074 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Apple Mac as SlimServer Question
Nice to see that the Squeezebox can start up the Mac from sleep. Also nice to see that the SlimServer can start the server and the Squeezebox. What about sleeping the Apple Mac server when done with listening? Any plug-ins for that? Alternative, I'm wondering if just setting the computer to sleep after "X" minutes of activity would work. Is music serving going to keep the computer awake? Is that an activity, or is only mouse moving or keyboard typing an activity? -- Jazz1 ---- Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26048 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Edit Playlists via SlimServer Browser Interface?
I've added playlists easily, and I'm guessing I can edit on the server itself. However I want to edit playlists within Slimserver. How can I do this? If I delete some playlists originally established in iTunes, will they only be deleted as far as SlimServer's browser "Browse Playlist" is concerned, and remain for my use in iTunes/iPod? [slim] SlimServer on Mac-Waking Up Server
I was very pleased to learn through this forum that by using the Squeezebox remote I could wake up my dual 1.25 Powermac for SlimServer duty. I was also wowed with the versatile browser page control of Squeezebox. Can the server also be awakened by the browser instead of the Squeezebox. I had left the Squeezebox in a timed sleep mode while on the Squeezenetwork last night. I could not wake up my server via the browser the next day. Squeezebox wanted me to sign of that network. I just got a Squeezebox and a Roku. My local high end shop guy has some many thing routed, switched and sliced and diced through it I'm afraid I'll mess the thing up.
