Re: [slim] UK portable Flac players

2007-08-24 Thread Keith

I agree with Heuer regarding the percievable differences between MP3 and
FLAC with portable devices, I cannot comment on the car as mine is only
quiet when it's parked with the engine off so it's irrelvant about the
quality or image of the sound mind you some would say the same about my
car... Makes a lot of noise and has limited, if any, image, oh hum.

I've tried with different sampling speeds with MP3 and find that 128 is
acceptable for most portable listening (sounds pants when played back
through the main sytem though).

I've been using media centre (http://www.jrmediacenter.com/) and this
allows me keep my portable devices up to date while at the same time
automatically converting them to MP3 where required (I keep a cache of
MP3 files so that if I select a specific file that's already been
converted the system uses that rather than reconverting the FLAC file)

Re: [slim] Network play causes RAID access errors?

2007-08-24 Thread Keith

I'm sure there is more cost effective methods but this is what I did:

4 x 320Gb sata drives in JBOB pairs and then mirrored (RAID 1) and have
not had any problems, although I haven't tried RAID 0.

The only issue I have is with hibenate whereby the Raid fails when the
system comes out of hibenate mode but I put that down to the raid
card.

I use a high point card (1820A) to JBOB them and windows XP to mirror
them, possibly it would have been better to do this the other way
around but I'm still learning.

Re: [slim] Unable to Connect to SlimServer After Working for 5 Days

2007-08-20 Thread Keith

Don't know if this will help but you could try using a fixed IP address.
Just that the other day my partner was using one of the SB2's as a
bridge and all hell let loose with the rest of my SB2's (both wired and
wireless) seems that the issue was IP address duplication. Setting up a
fixed IP address fixed the initial problem while I worked out what was
causing it. I'm now back to DHCP and things are working normally.

Re: [slim] How do you use your Squeezebox/Transporter?

2007-06-13 Thread Keith

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36061

Question: When you listen to music, do you connect to Slim Server or
SqueezeNetwork?

- a) 100% of the time to Slimserver (on computer or NAS drive)
- b) 75% of the time on Slimserver / 25% on SqueezeNetwork
- c) 50% of the time on Slimserver / 50% on SqueezeNetwork
- d) 25% of the time on Slimserver / 75% on SqueezeNetwork
- e) 100 % of the time on SqueezeNetwork

I voted 100% SS but that's not quite correct as I do use SN when the PC
is off. I would go with 95%SS and 5%SN.

I like the option of SN as the PC is quite noisy when running so it
makes sense at night.

I would like to be able to use SN with an alarm function as since
moving to a RAID drive i cannot use the hibernate function on the PC so
have been without the SB on mornings.

Re: [slim] Umm, Slim Devices Logo (Instead of Logitech)?

2007-06-02 Thread Keith

OK so I'm shallow. I accept the argument that the lable on the box
shouldn't effect any decision and that you should use your ears.

I have been fortunate to babysit a friends Transporter for a couple of
weeks and yes there is a difference and yes I want one, the money isn't
really an issue, well not as much as the aforementioned logo.

I may still have to swallow my pride but in the meantime I will
contiune to make some noise... literally.

I guess an alternative would be to offer the units unbranded on the
front? There I go again, :o)

Re: [slim] Umm, Slim Devices Logo (Instead of Logitech)?

2007-06-01 Thread Keith

Brand is important otherwise why would companies protect them so much.
It's because consumers associate with brands. Would you like to have an
F40 with a Fiat badge, nope didn't think so. Do I want a Logitech logo
staring at me from the front room, nope. I don't have an issue with
Logitech in computer peripherals but not HiFi, that's just not their
bag.

They can place their logo on the back and leave the front clean. Yes
it's only a logo but the same way that a Casio watch does the same as a
Rolex it tells the time but a Rolex has other intangible values.

Of course people are passionate, if people were so fickle as to ignore
brand a company like Coke would be really in the mire, well it's only a
carbonated soft drink after all. personally I prefer Pepsi Max with a
bit of JD No7 but hey I could drink Tesco's Cola and Bourbon if it was
manufactured by the original companies but I would never offer these
'substandard' product to guests.

I think that bring me back to the rational behind the logo issue, most
people don't give a monkey what logo there is but it does matter if you
have guests it's all about image, and isn't that what the brand is about
image...

Re: [slim] 6.5.2 with old slimdevices logo

2007-05-31 Thread Keith

I've been considering purchasing a Transporter but contrary to some
points of view brand is very imporant but why pay for a brand or more
accurately why pay a premium price for a brand? There must be something
that provides the purchaser with something more than just the product?

Although I want what I believe is the best it has to have to be at the
right price. $2000 for a Slim Device Transporter is a lot of money but
$2000 for a Logitech Transporter is excessive.

This has nothing to do with Logitech as a company it's consumer
preference.

That's my view and like all consumers I can always vote with my
wallet.

I can see the rational for the standard SB but the Transporter is
something else, it's a niche market product so why not exploit this.

Are you using MAC address filtering?

Just that I had a similar problem with the WAP54G AP where on the
previous FW MAC address vanished. The latest version 3.04 has fixed
this problem but this is an AP not a router.

[slim] Random Mix - Bug?

2005-12-08 Thread Keith

When using random mix I find that tracks that I have excluded in iTunes
being played even though I have checked that I want these files
ignoring. If I attempt to find these tracks with search or browse they
are hidden so that bit works, so why does Random Mix pick them? Is this
a bug?

There are another 3 SB2 running fine so it would seem that this could

[slim] Sb3

2005-10-25 Thread Keith

Er, not convinced with the new shape. I currently have a couple of units
and I would have to relocate them for the new shape. Would like to see
both options available. Alternatively make a unit where the screen can
be moved through 90 degrees so that you can have the unit either
horizontal or vertical.

The way I read the description suggestes that wireless is now standard
and ethernet is optional, is this correct? Will the ethernet version
include wireless? As it is wireless is not a great idea for kitchens,
or should I say kitchens with a microwave...

If your still struggling you could always purchase a filter from RS
components, they do various coulours (Red 588-724, Green288-730,
Neutral 588-746 and Clear590-913) and are 220x130x1.5mm.

I've included the stock numbers so just go to the following and place
the stock number in the search box at the top of the screen
