[slim] Squeezebox Server with Squeezeslave to turn on speakers when playing

2009-11-07 Thread Lister

Hi there,

After setting up Squeezebox Server on a 24/7 server running Ubuntu,
connecting a SQ3 and a SQ boom to it, I use SqueezeboxSlave as a daemon
on the server itself.
All works perfectly, so I'm up to the next step: turning on the powered
speakers connected to the server automatically when squeezeslave starts
to play anything.
So far I've managed to connect a 220v relay to the com port of the
server using salvaged electronics parts and I can successfully switch
the speakers on and off from the commandline by starting and stopping a
program.

What I want to do is to monitor the state of Squeezeslave, preferably
with a bash script, and switch the speakers on when it is playing
anything, and switch them off when it stops. With the Boom in use as an
alarmclock, and synced with SQslave, I can then have music throughout my
house when drinking my morning coffee. :) (and maybe let the relay turn
the lights on or something...)

How can I poll the play/stop state of Squeezeslave?
Can I poll SB Server directly? The m3u playlist in
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/prefs/ tells me the playlist update date/time
and therefore the moment it starts playing, but how do I know when it
stops?
Or can I catch a signal from the lcdproc option?

I'll be very happy to hear anyones thoughts on this.

Cheers,
Lister

Btw, is someone interested in the schematics and program for the
comport relay?

[slim] Slimserver wav flac problem

2005-03-08 Thread David Lister
I have just downloaded Slimserver 5.4, with a view to buying a Squeezebox
in the future.

I can play mp3 files ok in my software mp3 player (jetAudio).

However, I am unable to play wav or flac files.

The 'PLAY' button at the top of the right hand pane in Slimserver is
ineffective (it should turn orange when pressed).

I have tried various wav files (all 14400, 16 bit) - they all fail.

Can anyone please help? Why is Slimserver only able to play mp3?

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [slim] Slimserver wav flac problem

2005-03-08 Thread David Lister
Thanks for your help.

I know that lame is not installed on my system (Windows 2000) - I have had
an error message informing me of this when attempting to convert flac to
mp3 streaming (in order to see if flac/mp3 conversion would work after
flac/wav streaming didn't work).

My impression is that I should be able to play flac files as a wav stream
(without converting to mp3).

Wav File Format - Wav Stream Format is built in to Slimserver (File
Types|File Format Conversion Setup)

I did try softsqueeze - I wasn't able to install it. I double-clicked on
softsqueeze.jnlp - Java Webstart came up with an error message 'Unable to
launch the specified application'

(An error occurred while launching/running the application.

Category: Launch File Error

The field jnlpcodebase has an invalid value: http://[% host
%]/html/softsqueeze/)

I didn't pursue this any further (I launched softsqueeze.jnlp from C:\test
- was this the wrong thing to do?)

If I get a Squeezebox I will want to stream my flac collection. To do this
I will need to get familiar with Slimserver. Apart from streaming mp3
(which I don't need), I'm not having much luck.

You probably need to install lame_enc.dll in your slimserver bin directory.
You need this for slimserver to be able to convert from raw (wav) to mp3 for
streaming to your music player. If you want to get the complete feel for
what a squeezebox is like you should try out softsqueeze--it's exactly like
a squeezebox (and if you don't want to compromise the sound quality of your
flacs sotsqueeze will allow streaming of the uncompressed wav without
conversion to mp3).

Re: [slim] Slimserver wav flac problem

2005-03-08 Thread David Lister
Thanks - it's all becoming a lot clearer now.

Regards

1/ After starting Softsqueeze I am able to browse all my albums by
searching
 *

I am able to see all the albums on a full=screen display, and am able to
scroll through them in order to select which ones I want to play.

If I get a Squeezebox, there won't be a full-screen display. How will I be
able to scroll/browse through my collection (I know I will be able to
search for specific albums/tiles/artists, but I would like to be able to
 browse as well).

The web interface allows full browsing by artist, genre, album and by album
artwork(and in the upcoming 6.0: new music, year). Adding items from teh web
interface of slimserver will play them on your player.

2/ I am able to select and play albums from within Softsqueeze with no
 problems.

How can I use Slimserver to control what is being played on Softsqueeze - I
can see the playlist, Slimserver says 'Now Playing', but nothing seems to
be happening. Is it possible to control album playing in Softsqueeze from
 Slimserver?

the slimserver GUI is basically a web interface. The default skin refreshes
every 30 seconds, so unless you initiate control from the GUI (or any browser
on any computer pointed to http://serverIP:9000/) then you would have to wait
for that refresh in order to get an updated status on the player. The right
side fo teh GUI is your current state, topped by a status pane, and the
playlist below. On the left you should see a list of browse, search,
settings,
and help items to choose from. Browse and Search let you add songs to your
player(s)' current playlist.

cheers,
kdf
