Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-09-17 Thread Munge

I run Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04, Wine 1.0.0, Lame 3.98.2, dsound.dll is dated
27 July. The only change I can think of is that I disabled CoverArt in
the ini file since I don't need it.

I run dsbridge successfully under Wine on a couple of PCs (following the
instruction provided by omega12). The multiple instances (netstat) was
resolved when I restarted.

Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-09-13 Thread Munge

I tried the tip from alex_london, and it’s a brilliant solution! Some
comments:
- sometimes Safari doesn’t start the playback, then I just click Done
and try again
- you need to have lame installed on the server
- you might need to adjust player (i.e. for the iPod) Audio settings in
SqueezeCenter
- as already pointed out by alex_london, there is quite a delay because
of the buffering
Using e.g. iPeng to control the iPod and then Safari to play even gives
you background music. You can run any application except Safari. No need
for Mobile Squeeze if you ask me.
(I use iPeng 1.0.5, iPod 3.1.1, SqueezeCenter 7.3.2.)

Re: [slim] Large music library = slow Slimserver??

2007-12-13 Thread Munge

Probably a lot of good advice here, but one thing struck my mind. Could
the fact that you have put very many folders in e.g. the rock folder
contribute to the lousy performance? I don't think Windows can handle
this properly. Perhaps you should try to have separate folders for
Rock\A Rock\B etc.

[slim] Noise with SB and Naim

2006-12-14 Thread Munge

I have an SB2 connected to my Naim Nait 5, and there is a constant low
noise from the speakers (regardless of whether the SB is on or off).
The noise does not get louder if I increase the volume on the Nait. Is
this likely to be a grounding problem with the Naim, or something with
the RCA --> DIN cable? Or should I get a better power supply?
I have another setup with an SB3 and a Tivoli Model Two, and there is
no noise.
Any help would be appreciated.

[slim] T-amp - no noise?

2006-11-15 Thread Munge

I'm planning on getting a T-amp and a pair of cheap speakers for my
daughter's Squeezebox setup. I tried out some PC speakers that I had
lying around, but they all made a noise/hiss as soon as the SB was
connected. Can someone confirm that the T-amp is quiet when no music is
playing?

Thanks,

Or is this perhaps related to my tags?

Cheers,

[slim] Why is artist via genre so slow?

2005-12-11 Thread Munge

Hi,
Here are two common scenarios:
1) Browse artist, select an artist, and all albums are displayed. This
takes no time at all.

2) Browse genre, select an artist, and all albums are displayed. This
takes ages!

I have 371 albums (5144 songs) on a W2K laptop (300 MHz, 192 MB RAM),
Slimserver 6.1.1.

To me, this seems to be a fairly trivial indexing problem. (It has
nothing to do with the setting for "Filter genres at the album & track
level" which I thought initially.) Does Slimserver use a SQL database?
Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid this problem?

Cheers,
Munge

[slim] SB2 internal DAC quality equals that of a $??? CD player

2005-09-29 Thread Munge

I know this has been discussed quite a lot, but without any detailed
explanations, could you give a rough estimate of the SB2 internal DAC
quality? How much would I have to pay for a CD player to get a
significantly better sound quality than I get from the SB2 using the
internal DAC? (I know there are crappy CD players for $1000 and pretty
good ones for $300, but I'm looking for a ballpark value.)

[slim] Power management on laptop running Slimserver

2005-09-28 Thread Munge

I plan to get an SB2 and use an old Thinkpad 240 as server. I have
installed Slimserver and it seems to be OK. The problem is that my
network card (an old Dlink DE-650) hangs/goes to sleep after some time
(a few hours). I have disabled all suspend settings in the Thinkpad
power management setup. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
correct this? Is it a Thinkpad power management problem or is it a
crappy old network card? Or would this be a non-issue with an SB2
connected to the LAN (i.e. there would be continuous traffic)? I use a
Netgear MR814v2 router. Any advice would be appreciated!

[slim] Re: How to use FLAC?

2005-09-22 Thread Munge

My plan is to use iTunes --> WAV. iTunes gets all tag info but nothing
goes into the WAV files. However, the folder structure will contain
this (except for year?), and then I can use a custom tag specifier like
G\A\L\T in the Flac Frontend.

As for the Linux CD with Thinkpad 240: There is no cd drive on the 240,
so I would have to take out the disk. My first attempt will be to run
Slimserver under W2K on the Thinkpad.

Thanks for the information. I realize that EAC is likely to give me
better data, but when you say that hifi cd players improvise when they
cannot recover from errors, then I am willing to accept improvisation
when I rip the very same CD. It shouldn't matter much unless the
ripping happens to be very unsuccessful.

2005-09-21 Thread Munge

Thanks for all good advice! I tried EAC with the seetings from
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30959
The CD went back and forth for ages and then it said that there was an
error. No file created.
Look here, I've got a hifi CD player with which I am happy. It doesn't
retry 28 times and then delivers the sound, it gives me great sound at
once. What is so different with the PC CD drive? I never get any read
errors when I read a software CD. What's so special with ripping audio
CDs? I'm beginning to think that all this is mumbo jumbo. Please
explain why I need this EAC tool. Otherwise I will go for iTunes -->
WAV --> Flac Frontend --> Flac. At least it works and is easy to use.
