Re: [slim] Any Windows 7 issues yet
Thanks all! Well except for iPhone. Useless answer Dude. Had you backed it with an actual issue you personally encountered, I might have given you some cred. Say what you will about Microsoft, they NAILED the install process with this one. I went from XP to W7 64 bit so I although I do have to reinstall my software Everything PC wise Just Worked. No digging for old driver CDs, no struggling to get on the Internet to go get even more drivers, I didn't even have to configure Internet access for that matter, it just worked. No struggling to do things in 640x480 mode till you get your graphics card working, it simply came back up at top settings. It recognized all my drives and gadgets. In fact, even my webcam even worked, all without any extra efforts on my part! My Mom could have done this install. And yes, the first software I restored was the SB software and it is working great. I'm not saying it's a better OS than than Snow Leopard, Linux or what have you, but I was very pleased with the install process and will gladly give credit where credit is due. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70242 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Any Windows 7 issues yet
My copy is on order. I'm planning on loading the 64 bit version so I'm curious to know if anyone has confirmed compatibility yet. Music from my Squeezebox is the last hing I want to lose. Re: [slim] Off Topic - Large basement - audio options
First let me check to see if I understand you correctly. You want to play one source in multiple speaker zones but want to be able to independently control the volume in each zone. My first thought is that you are looking at a wired solution, of which there are many choices, and are sometimes best installed by a local AV specialist. Wiring in a home already walled in, is of course a challenge but there are lots of tricks to run much of it in wall and hide the rest that can't. Many receivers allow for a 'Zone 2' and sometimes even a third that have independent volume control. You might need to invest in a second remote to save walking around looking for the one. !!However!!, many receivers will not pass digital sources to the extra zones. That means that if your CD or DVD player is plugged into the receiver digitally (fiber, coax or HDMI) as it almost assuredly is, then you will not be able to hear it in the other zones. Seems silly but it's true. You could solve the above problem by using analog outs from your CD player. Depends on how much of an audiophile you are and if you are willing to lose that 'pure' digital signal to your receiver. Another option is buying a cheap stereo receiver/amp for the second zone and running a feed from the main receiver's pre-outs to the second receiver where you would then have separate volume control via the knob or remote. Again, the practicality of this depends on distance and the ability to run more wire. I'm sure there are more glamorous soltions too I'm not thinking about. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66328 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Load on Startup choice gone in SqueezeCenter
Am I confused or did this option go away. It now only has an option to load on login. It's been bugging me after Windows automatic updates that do reboots and such. Used to be a non-issue. SOrry if I'm missing something. I try a search and so no similar topic. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46106 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox turns itself on!
Shot in the very dark, but could you have a time zone issue? Maybe that was your alarm coming on thinking it was 5:30 in a wrong timezone. Also, I had an issue with a TV coming on at night. Took a while to figure out it was our cat walking on the remote. heh heh -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45652 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Need some help on this one...Duplicates!
I had this happening when I upgraded to Squeezecenter which includes I-Tunes compatibility. It was reading all my FLAC files from my library but it was also getting duplicates from the I-tunes listing. I keep a seperate library of MP3s for my MP3 player and my wifes Nano she won. I didn't tell SqueezeCenter about this other directory but it picked it up from the ITunes database. I'm not sure if it would have brought forward both libraries if they had both been the same files but since the proper library had flac versions and the ITunes library had MP3 versions, it probably thought they were two separate songs each. I had to turn off the ITunes support and rescan. Didn't need it anyways. Probably not your issue but you could give it a try. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45969 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Apple puts top down management style back in fashion
I know I'm feeding the troll but I just want to say that the Squeezebox is open code. Yes, that makes it geekier and sometimes setup is not 'plug and pray' like MS but look at the community of developers that formed around it to make it to new and amazing things. In short, maybe it has more than an on/off volume button. However, you end up getting so much more than you paid for. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45950 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPod, FLAC and Music Managers
The Cuwon is not my favorite player because I have no real use for mobile video but it is a niece piece of gear for flac music if you don't mind the size. As others mentioned the main drawback of FLAC on a portable player is thier size but this or any 30GB unit would allow for 900+ flac songs. The 20 GB = 600 or more. That's a lot of tunes for on-the-go. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39762 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Speaker Recommendation
Most of the bookshelf speakers I can recommend are a little higher than your price range. I normally highly recommend staying away from big box stores but I did get a pair of 2 way Harmon Kardon bookshelves about 6 or 7 years ago that I was extremely happy with for a small room and they were under 300 at the time in a BB store. I'm not familiar with their current lineup but if you can comfortably read a spec sheet then you can narrow down your search to a few good choices then go listen to them for the sound type you like. If the company doesn't release the detailed specs, then they are not worth buying as they have something to hide no matter how well marketed they are. Actually, what I really wanted to say, was that your phone company should be able to provide you with a filter to help keep your phone line clean. Should be a freebie as they are very inexpensive but I can't speak for your phone company. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36925 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Accessing Slimserver through corporate firewall?
not sure how you figure that running a port scanner is more likely to get you fired than manually testing the same thing one port at a time. Not likely either will get you fired, I would hope. It's totally passive. The more 'intense' scanners also look for any software or possible exploits on any open port that could be used for unfriendly purposes. It's a little harder to explain to your IT Security folk why your running something like this on your network. Also, If you port scan from the outside and you can get in on a port, you can be almost 100% sure you will also get out on it. However, when you scan from the inside, you might find a way out but depending how the packets get wrapped up, your application might still need a swinging door back in and sometimes a firewall blocks incoming only. If it gets treated as a return packet from an internal request, it won't matter much and it will be allowed back in. Some server apps on the outside though need to be able to establish a session from thier end. IN this case, your firewall has to let 'strange' packets in on that port. Sorry, I got wrapped up in the argument but that doesn't help you at all. Sounds like you are ready to roll anyways. Some places even frown against streaming audio as it chews up bandwidth when half the staff are listening to news or music all day. Many places have a policy but few actually enforce it when it comes down to it. However, you know much better than we do what your particular comany will let you get away with. To answer your question, although you don't need it anymore, I usually recommend Advanced Port Scanner to network newbs who just want to find a free port to make something work. It's not near as advanced as it says but it's easy to use and describes some of the more common port uses which helps you to understand what else is going on on a given port. For instance, someone mentioned just map your server to use port 80 because it's used for web and it's always open. However, your PC is already being slowed down when you browse the web but do you also want your SW server and client to have to deal with all your web traffic directly pumped into it too? Again, Sorry, way too much information. Irregardless, you know better than us what you can get away with. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33402 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Accessing Slimserver through corporate firewall?
There are all kinds of shareware apps for 'testing the security' of your firewall at work. You are looking for a port scanner. There are also multi tool programs that scan ports and do many other thing s to 'test security' all in one package. Careful with these, your firewall might pick up on the activity of some of these tools and log you. If you run it from an internal IP (from your within your work network) it would be pretty easy for them to figure out it is you. For the port scanner to work, you will need to run it from outside your network anyway. It's passive and can't do any harm but is not generally appreciated but network admins. Quotes around 'testing' added because certainly they could not be used by Hackers as long as the .txt files says they are for testing purposes only. However, what I really wanted to say wasBe careful. Depending on who you work for, intentionally bypassing firewall security for whatever reason can get to a nasty speech from your boss or even fired depending on policy. -- Murph Murph's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33402 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
