Re: [slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?
If you can, consider the 'NHT M-00 powered monitors' (http://store.nhthifi.com/M-00-Powered-Mini-monitor?sc=12&category=1213). These are an acoustic-suspension design, so no worries placing on a bookshelf. You will probably require an attenuator, and NHT makes 'the PVC PC' (http://store.nhthifi.com/NHT-PVC-PC;jsessionid=0a0109441f436905e28e75754ea3bd6f93bdadfddfe7.e3eTaxmKbNaNe34Pa38Ta38Qc350?sc=12&category=1213) which works great with the Squeezebox (and breaks ground-loops too). If you want more bass and thus also add a subwoofer, you will have a very nice sounding full-range system. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70600 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox: Wifi and Health
Mid to long-term exposure to low-level radiation from in-home wifi, etc is currently an unknown human health risk. Also, if it is a risk, it is a damn inconvenient fact for the industry and the consumer - so most studies regarding this topic are usually defensively funded at least partly by the industry (both direct and client), hence potentially obscured and biased. [For instance, the tobacco industry still I think even now insists that their product isn't "proven" to cause illness, and dares anybody to ever conclusively prove it.] As a general rule, I personally try to avoid adding another wireless device to my home. Currently I use an older "wired only" SB3 (which unfortunately is not a purchase option anymore I believe), and my home is networked with powerline networking devices (which work perfectly). As I have not become spoiled with the convenience of wifi (yet), I don't miss it at all, and don't feel defensive about the topic. Also, I've heard from others that Wayne at Bolder Cable will take out the wireless card in a SqueezeBox for a very minimal fee... -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Playing cd's
Hi bpa, With great anticipation, I tried the listed steps on my Windows XP machine, and SC shows a CD Player menu item now and pulls the loaded CD's track listing. At first, trying to play a CD would result in an error message about not being able to play the file type - but when I went into the "file types" SC menu and deselected all but the CDDA2WAV, it appeared that it was remedied. But now when I try to play a track, it says "Connecting.." for a time and the optical drive starts thrashing, and the song never plays. Even after I press Pause until the SB3 says "Stopping..", the optical drive continues to thrash around with the disk. Any ideas what I should do? The drive is a fairly generic Sony DVD ROM drive which can play both DVD and CD disks. P.S. I also noticed many copies of the CD Player EXE in the list of active processes in Task Manager. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42106 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] best stand-alone seakers to connect a SB3 to?
About the Dynaudio BM 5A's: I found them to be extremely good for nearfield mixing-desk usage, but not so good for home hifi. They are nearfield and the tweeters are extremely directional (as they should be for their intended mixing purpose) - which means you had better not move your head even an inch, if you want the soundfield to remain coherent. Good hifi-oriented speakers will have a MUCH larger sweetspot for listening, and slightly different voicing. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46115 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Transporter vs. SB3 - my experience
I wish my Transporter was working flawlessly. :( Some of the various issues I've been finding with it, are mentioned in the "Transporter issues" thread in this General Discussion forum. For instance, approximately 30 minutes ago, the volume knob completely stopped functioning AGAIN, this time after switching between internet radio and my local music library. About 4 hours ago, the Transporter competely locked up AGAIN and required a power-cycle to regain normal functionality. This time I didn't need to physically unplug the machine to fix it, but you can probably imagine how this is still frustrating/irritating when it happens, repeatedly over time, and especially when you really REALLY want it to work well! The extra features of the Transporter that distinguish it from the SB3, are very important IMO (especially the front buttons/knob) and conceptually make it a terrific and family-friendly audio device. These extra features are also supposed to be worth about $1700 simoleons more than the SB3. So why can't the end-user be reasonably expected and advised to use them without trouble. I would even be willing to pay a bit more than this extra premium, if these features would work flawlessly on a (reasonably) consistent basis. When this Transporter works well, I love the thing! However when it does NOT work well, which is sadly frequent, I get depressed about needing to reconsider the 30-day return policy. I am so extremely impressed with SD/L for creating these genius products and software. They are absolutely stunning achievements for everyone involved, especially us end-users. I guess that I just wish, that I wasn't now needing to think so dang hard about whether I can justify the significant (for me) extra cost for the Transporter. It is obviously such an amazing device, but also currently has these very disturbing quirks that may or may not ever be fixed, if they are even fixable. I wonder what others can please advise here. Re: [slim] Transporter issues
JJZolx, actually the knob seems to make its occasional buzzing sounds regardless of whether or not it has been used. But we all really do like the knob functionality (I personally like it very much), and would hate to not be able to use it - as it is such a "family-friendly" feature. Also, in the list of fixes from SS 6.5.3 to 6.5.4, I didn't see any mention of fixes for the items I mentioned - which is why I didn't yet install 6.5.4 (but perhaps I will do this now, since you've suggested it). Thanks Sean, really appreciate all the work that went into this great device and please don't consider any of my writing as a negative comment about the Transporter - it is an amazing achievement. Actually yes I did search bugs.slimdevices.com for similar reports of these things I've mentioned, but didn't see anything that looked exactly the same as these items. Thought about filing some of these items as new bugs, but I'm torn about doing that, since the issues seem to occur on their own schedule, without the same trigger each time. SuperQ, the Transporter is running wired and was installed directly in place of the previous wired SB3. No networking problems here (I've checked). Thanks for the good ideas and advice so far, and for any replies still to come... -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Transporter issues
We're trying out a new Transporter and really enjoying it, but also notice some problems that we wonder if anybody else has seen, and/or might please have some tips. 1) After switching to/from internet radio and SlimServer, or to/from SqueezeNetwork and SlimServer, the music is sometimes literally too fast or too slow. My wife and I got quite a laugh last night, hearing Diana Krall singing like a chipmunk! :) Other times it is too slow, I mean way to ssllooow. Unplugging/replugging the Transporter fixes it sometimes, but sometimes takes several unplug/replug actions. 2) The Transporter sometimes just locks up and stops responding to remote or onboard buttons at all. This is fixed by unplugging/replugging (at least so far). 3) The onboard knob seems to almost randomly go through periods of making its occasional noises, you know the ones I mean - those buzzing sounds that mechanically come from the knob itself. However this is loud enough to become distracting sometimes, even when music is playing. 4) The onboard knob, once so far, completely stopped working - as did all other onboard buttons except power, play and pause. The remote also completely stopped functioning during this episode. Unplugging/replugging the Transporter (I'm getting pretty used to doing this now) several times, did eventually fix it. 5) Sometimes the music will temporarily lose its hifi sound (becomes a bit unfocused and tinny/harsh) only to sound excellent and normal again after a power cycle. The difference is not extreme, but it is noticeable. We only play uncompressed .wav files and the internet radio stations (radio acoustic, etc), and at the moment are using SlimServer 6.5.3 on a Windows 2000 machine. We really like the Transporter's sound and functionality, so please don't consider this in any way a hostile etc thread :) Again, just wondering if anybody recognizes these Transporter behaviors and has tips to share? Thanks to any/all that reply. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So I think is quite reasonable to assume that SB/Transporter users are an appropriate audience here. :) I think it would help more people than you think. For instance, I have a totally silent headless PC right next to my stereo shelf, which runs SS and also functions as our HTPC. Hi aubuti, 1) This could hopefully be easily selected within the relevant page of an enhanced SS (why not?) 2) The Waveinput plugin itself is already often being used in this way, right? The SD Dir of Engineering wrote that people had been requesting this for years! I believe I'm not the only one who would find this enhancement extremely functional. It seems to me that serving music files from an optical-drive platter is just as much "serving", as when it serves from a hard-drive platter. Users would still serve most music from ripped copies on harddrive, but being able to also spin the occasional CD on your SS computer would be a function, that more people would appreciate than you might think. :) Honestly, why not enhance SS to do this? And why not also have an option to serve the PCM audio to a selected soundcard? Maybe it is extremely difficult to program and implement, I don't know. Perhaps I am the only one who would really enjoy and use these functions... -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41577 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Couple of nagging questions...
aubuti;252860 Wrote: > ...examples I've seen mention using foobar2000 or Winamp to play the > CD... aubuti, That is exactly what I am referring to also. If you need to initiate and control the audio stream with some other application, then SS is passively receiving (not initiating/controlling) the stream. I am talking about SS doing this itself with basic functionality (certainly nothing nearly as complex as Win/Foo), so the user could still just use a headless PC in the background. SuperQ, That sounds like quite a nice custom setup you've got there. I wish SS could even natively do just "play", instead of a "rip-&-play". So when friends come over with CD's you could play through the slim device and SS - no ripping needed on those occasions, and no separate CD player taking up shelf space! :) Perhaps SS could access the built-in "CD Player" application and drivers in Windows, or something like that - why not? -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41577 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Couple of nagging questions...
I have been wondering for a while about something: Could SlimServer possibly be enhanced to access a computer CD/DVD-ROM drive? I would like to use SlimServer and my slim devices to spin CD's on my computer optical drive, in addition to playing ripped files from hard-drive. Why can't Slimserver access music files from a computer optical drive, like it does from a music folder. Is it really that hard to do, or even perhaps impossible? Just curious please, all comments and explanations are very appreciated... -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41577 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So capacitive coupling (perhaps), and all the way into the sub/sat amp. I can't help but wonder, what happens if you plug the SB3 into another outlet on the same circuit leg (but not the powerstrip)? Also, do you have your computer, sub/sat system, etc all plugged into the same strip? Might check the power rating of the strip or try another strip... -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38588 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

That's why I decided to not use a similar > connector for the SB3 and just go directly from the RCA jacks (although > I use the preamp control configured on the server). Sounds to me like the problem lies in the amp within your sub/sat. This happens often with them, and your experience using them without the SB3 and getting *more* hum seems to provide evidence for it. Unbalanced (RCA) connections can allow some potential interchassis current to flow through the cable shield, but I don't think this is your issue here - it seems much more likely to me, that the sub/sat amp is the problem. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38588 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
