I think this is the issue. Also, if you're using the same SSID on both
AP's you can go to network settings on the Controller and look at the
BSSID, that is unique per AP. This is how I was testing if the
Controller was roaming. For me, strangely, it worked! I was using a
Linksys router and Linksys range expander. The bug is still open so
your mileage may vary.

I would agree that those Ethernet over Power adapters, or whatever they
are called, to an access point. It all depends on how well ethernet over
power adapters work in your home, but I would guess it must be better
than a wireless stand alone repeater.

It doesn't surprise me that an SB3 doesn't perform as well as a wireless

smaller area.

It sounds to me like Ethernet wall plug adapters are the best option.

Anyone out there have a wall plug adapter and thermometer? :-)

When your Controller drops out what exactly is happening? Does the

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6085

It worked for me in several configurations I tested, but it may not
work in all possible roaming setups. You can browse to BSSID in network
settings on your Controller to see the MAC address of the wireless
access point it is connected to at any given time, this may help you to
diagnose, if it is indeed some kind of roaming issue.

r3191 is now being pushed to 7.2.1 users, so I've removed the custom
files I linked too in my last post. If you're using 7.2.1 your
controller should already be updated to r3191, if not you can simply
restart SqueezeCenter and that should push the update.

Pablolie, any update? Contact me in private if you prefer.

OhPinchy, yes 7.3 beta includes this fix.

Neo, care to try 7.2.1 and see if this fix helps you?

FordDonald, care to try 7.2.1? You're also seeing the blue icon issues?
I take it you had issues with the custom.jive.version/bin, no big deal
r3191 is being pushed to all 7.2.1 users now, just update to 7.2.1 and
you'll get it.

Jmschnur, what Internet radio stream caused your receiver to turn
itself off? I tested a number of slim picks with r3191 and they played
just fine.

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-10-24 Thread Ross L

We think we have a number of these Blue Icon Of Doom issues resolved.
The fix will be pushed out sometime next week, but if you'd like to try
it now you can download a custom Controller firmware version and a
custom version file here:

http://eng.slimdevices.com/~ross/

Simply put both of those files in your cache directory, and connect
your controller to a player connected to your SqueezeCenter and your
Controller should prompt to update. Cache directory for OSX:

~/Library/Caches/SqueezeCenter/

Cache directory for XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\SqueezeCenter\Cache

Application Data is a hidden directory, you'll need to enable show
hidden files and folders from folder options (tools - folder options -
view, from explorer) to browse to this directory.

Let us know what you find.

Re: [slim] Wrong self-assigned IP for SB Duet receiver

2008-09-18 Thread Ross L

Sounds like a networking problem. First off self assigned IPs will look
like that, 169...etc. If you're seeing this option it means your
controller isn't reaching DHCP. Could be a few reasons for this, number
one reason that comes to my mind would be WEP encryption failure, do you
use WEP?

Things to try:
1. Factory reset Controller and Receiver (hold front button for 6
seconds until it blinks rapidly)
2. Go through setup again, if it fails, consider disabling encryption
temporarily as a diagnostic. If that works, double-check your
encryption.
3. If it still fails take a look at the router, is DHCP enabled?
Everything seem normal? Might want to reset the router too.

[slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep

2008-09-16 Thread Ross L

There are a number of network related issues that can occur with Duet
and Controller, I could use some information in this particular case.
For anyone noticing their Controller not properly reconnecting to their
wireless network after sleep please share a few details if you have time
to help me out. A typical case of this seems to be after setting
Controller down (not in charger) for a period of time, then waking the
controller and seeing a red wireless icon.

If you see this please reply to this thread with your wireless router /
access point model number and version, and firmware version. As well
please share your wireless encryption settings, and DHCP status. Also
please let us know if this is a standard wireless setup or bridged
(Receiver connected via Ethernet), and finally the firmware version of
the controller available in Settings - Advanced - About. If you have
questions about what connection type you're using, please see here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeboxConnectionTypes

If you happen to reproduce this behavior (red wireless icon after
sleep) please check the DHCP client table within your router (often

We're trying to reproduce this here in the QA lab, so far I still
haven't seen it. I'm using a Linksys WRT610N but I think its time to
try another.

Just wanted to post letting everyone know this is a very high priority
for us in QA. Thanks everyone for the great details.

I also wanted to suggest if anyone is willing, please update our router
status wiki page with problems you see with your specific routers or
wireless access points.

I'm still in the process of adding details from all the routers and
access points we have here in the QA lab. I thought mentioning this may
help us to track down the access points which most commonly exhibit this
behavior.

Re: [slim] Duet Receiver Loses Connection

2008-03-07 Thread Ross L

Ahh ok so the issue is the wireless connection between your PC and your
network. If your Receiver and/or PC are right next to your router, why
not consider Ethernet?

Anyhow, you'll need to do a bit more diagnostic to understand exactly
what is causing this, it could be a number of things. From what you're
describing I have a hunch it's your PC running SqueezeCenter, it's
losing its network connection, could be the fault of the router, but
would doubt encryption is to blame.

Ensure your routers firmware is up to date, and consider doing the same
for the driver of your wireless adapter for your PC as well. If you have
Ethernet, you could cable your PC if that solves the problem it would
indicate the issue is your PCs wireless connection. If it does not
solve the issue, consider cabling your Squeezebox receiver for the same
test.

Let us know how you fair.

Re: [slim] Trying SC7

2008-03-06 Thread Ross L

Depends on the firmware you're using currently. SC7 ships with firmware
86 for SB2/3, and 40 for Transporter.

It is indeed simple to run more than one SqueezeCenter server on a
single network, just install as usual. Then go to the player(s) you'd
like to connect to the new server, hold the left arrow for 5 seconds
and scroll down until you see the new server (computer name). You may
need to run through 'set up networking' once more.

Re: [slim] New Airport Extreme now won't connect to slimserver

2007-09-14 Thread Ross L

Ron,

It's very possible that the wireless failure is out of your control. It
could be due to neighboring wireless networks, or some new microwave,
too many things can cause wireless networks to fail. Just because it
worked yesterday doesn't mean it will work today. I use a Squeezebox
via wireless in my garage and most of the time it works perfectly, but
sometimes it simply will not work. The wireless works in the rest of my
house but not in the garage, sometimes. I've turned appliances off and
on and even asked my neighbors, yet still I have no idea what causes
the failure.

In my opinion, the only practical solution to my problem is an Ethernet
cable. I realize that in some situations, wireless networks simply don't
work as well as I want them to.

Re: [slim] Slimserver loosing contact with Squeezebox 3

2007-08-10 Thread Ross L

When it stops working, you can ping the SlimServer PC from another
computer on the network? What are you pinging from?

If the SlimServer computer still has network access then perhaps its
not a networking issue, but rather software. Do you have any firewall
software on the SlimServer computer?

You could also try using the radio tune in feature of SlimServer, it's
easy to find on the SlimServer web interface.

Are you sure you want to enter URLs with the remote control? That
sounds arduous.

Automatically run at login is an option when right-clicking SlimTray,
the SlimServer icon in the task tray next to the clock in XP.

Re: [slim] Squeeze network connection died

2007-05-23 Thread Ross L

I know little about RSS, sorry. I really think this must be a networking
issue. What is the make/model number/firmware version of your wireless
router? Do you use DHCP? If so, what is the IP address of the player?

Also have you compared the MAC address of the player with the sticker
on the bottom? Holding the left arrow and scrolling down to current
settings will show you the MAC address of the player.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-24 Thread Ross L

HifiSteve you might want to call/email support. I think something might
be wrong with your player, have you checked its MAC address?

Hold the left arrow on the remote for 5 seconds, then scroll down to
'current settings' and hit the right arrow. Then scroll down to MAC
address and compare it with the sticker on the bottom, do they match?
If they don't hit the right arrow once more and change the MAC address
to match the sticker on the bottom of the player. If that doesn't help,
I'd suggest contacting support about this networking issue.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-04-23 Thread Ross L

Some changes have been made in the most recent nightly build that seem
to be clearing up the blank web interface after restart issue, without
the need for any work around. (bug 4748)

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/SlimServer_6_5_x_v2007-04-23/

I realize most people that have run into this have likely found the
workaround to be functional. If anyone is still experiencing this issue
please try the latest nightly 6.5.2

We are very much aware of SlimServer issues on Vista, and we're doing
our best to get the data to the right people so we can get these
wrinkles ironed out as soon as possible.
