Re: [slim] I need help - Slimserver failing on Mac.

2005-02-18 Thread Steven Moore
As you are new to mac this is how to open the firewall:
Goto systems preferences from the Apple menu.
Select sharing in the internet and network section.
Select firewall, click new...
In port name select other and then type
3483, 9000, 9090
in the port number section.
Type slim server in the description section. Click Ok.
The firewall should be open now for the slimserver.
Try this and get back if it's not working after this.

I'm currently trying to set-up the Slimserver on the Mac but am having
weird problems - and to be honest I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing
:-)
Anyway, this is what is happening:
1) I've downloaded the Slimserver for OSX software.
2) Installed the software and it now appears in my system preferences.
3) Started the server, and selected 'when I logon' in the system
preferences screen.
4) I then go to the slimserver webpage and can see that it is scanning
my library and finding my Music.
5) After a minute or so the server stops running (in system
preferences) and I can no longer get to the webpage.
This is happening everytime I try this...
Any ideas on what could be wrong. Please remember I'm new to OSX so
if you have anything I could check please let me know.
Thanks,

Yes, all goods incoming to the UK are liable for import duty & VAT.

The limit is a value of around the 18UKP mark (inc shipping), can't

The output form the above command is valuable stuff, just to see

Slimserver is working fine, and uses between 0 and 2% CPU, much better
than before. Searches are totally instant! I am very excited about
this now, great work guys (no need to go back to 5.4 even), and to
think its only going to get better!

Feature request: The OSX preference pane is great, but could you add a
real time "Total Tracks: " , or some indication when its scanning.
When Slimserver is really busy, neither the web interface or SB can
display any information and its nice to know what's going on.

[slim] Search for songs 6.0b1

2005-03-10 Thread Steven Moore
imac g4, 10.3.8, 6.0b1
Searching for songs on this machine has improved from the alpha
slightly.
When searching before you got a list of matching songs (1 of 43) etc
and then pressing down on the remote caused the server to crash, now in
the beta when pressing down you get a list of songs with some missing,
e.g the display will read (5 of 6) on the top line then a blank line
below with the music symbol at the end. Pressing play or right on the
blank songs causes a crash, pressing play on the displayed songs allows
them to play.

A stock cube has no fans, so noise would come from your hard drive

some
strance vibrations.

Various upgrades can add noise as well.
Yep, I was very disappointed. I think it's probably the first thing -
this
is a cube that's being sitting on a shelf unused for some years. I
borrowed
it to get the SqueezeBox up and rip my CDs, with a faint hope of
turning it
into a really long term loan - but it is a big whiner. I don't
believe it
has any upgrades; optical drive isn't silent (and is losing its grip in
terms of being able to eject CDs) but I think it's the hard disk
that's at
fault.   I'm about halfway through ripping my pathetic collection;
I'll back
up to a firewire disk tonight in case the HD is fixing to die.

Thanks for your input.  Nice to know that a cube can/should be silent;
but
since this was my only shot at a free one, and they still fetch
remarkably
strong prices on eBay, I'm now looking more towards Linkstation or
similar.

Re: [slim] DB corruption again

2005-03-18 Thread Steven Moore
Maybe the db is at fault for my particular problem of not showing all
the songs in a particular album or search.
By not showing I mean it displays (1 of 15) of an album but when you
press down on the remote to see the next track the track name is blank.
The next one may display and the next one may be blank. Still happening
on 17th nightly. Rescan stops now after 50 mins which is long but an
improvement but I am still seeing 70% cpu usage under normal
conditions.

I ripped a new album today, copied it to my music folder and hit
rescan. Some time later I actually want to listen to some stuff, but
upon entering 'elton' in search music=>search artists via the remote I
don't get Elton John, I get Alanis Morissette, who is allegedly the
artist for most of my anime soundtracks and a few Elton John tracks.
Same results with live search on the web interface - the associations
between artists, albums and songs seem nearly randomized.

This is on a nightly from a few days ago
(SlimServer_v2005-03-16.no-cpan-tar), can't tell you the exact version
because the web interface does not show a revision anymore, just a
lonely 0 a line _below_ the 'SlimServer Version: 6.0b1' The slimserver
worked fine yesterday evening and I haven't touched it or the server
machine since then.

Basically I have been having problems with every rescan - I just
default to deleting the db now when I add something. Seeing as I don't
have a version number anymore, something's corrupting more than the
db.

Not here, I'm afraid. I'm still getting around 400 tracks short of what
itunes reports 9013 slim to 9424 in itunes. 24th nightly. 10.3.8, imac.

Hold on,
I did a rescan without wiping the cache and now how have 9381 songs.
Strange. Tried it again but still have the 9381.
I think I solved a problem also. When I clicked on an album I was only
getting the first track displayed. I seemed to have solved it by
inputting the locations of my itunes xml file in my home folder and
music folder on an external HD.

What can go wrong with tags that can affect slimserver?
Is there a program that can checks tags in os x? I need something that
can scan a lot of files.

Steve - SlimServer will read all versions of ID3 tags - v1.x, 2.2, 2.3

If you have high-bit / Unicode characters in your tags, I highly

1. itunes enabled, so it will pick up the music folder itself.
2. itunes disabled with the music folder pointing at the itunes music

I'll send them tomorrow, getting late here and it takes nearly an hour

I'm getting some strangeness here. SlimServer 6 actually shows
slightly more tracks than i have in iTunes but with some weirdness
going on.
I looked up an album this morning (Kia by Blackalicious) and initially
Slim only displayed 3 tracks but reported the album as having 18.
Searching for the album in a few different ways it then decided there
were only 3 tracks in total.
ITunes displays (and plays) all 18 tracks. Nothing odd about the
tracknames as far as i can see.

No common thread on the systems then.
I tried running with both use itunes enabled and disabled pointing the
server to the itunes music folder.
With itunes enabled finding 'bad' albums was very quick, but I thought
I had solved it by disabling use itunes and doing a wipe/rescan, it
just took a bit longer to find the 'bad' albums. So it could be
something to do with itunes integration, I don't know.
Went back to 5.4 yesterday and everything was fine, just like yourself.

The logic for track validity has changed in 6.0 - as well as the entire
subsystem that handles file paths to deal with Unicode. Still a few

[slim] itunes settings suggestion

2005-04-08 Thread Steven Moore
I wonder if it would be possible to have a 'scan manually' option in
the server settings>itunes section This could comprise of 2 radio
buttons beside each other one for manual and the other for reload
interval with an input field.
At present I have itunes reload interval set very high (10) in
order to avoid the server rescanning every time I use itunes to listen
to music. Whilst this works I think the other system will be clearer
for new users.
I still want the benefits of itunes integration namely playlists and
adding music via itunes (tagging etc) but not the continual rescanning.
Any thoughts?

Re: [slim] Mac OS X slimserver install problems - newbie

2005-04-16 Thread Steven Moore
I have the same set-up as yourself and mine works in both 5.4 and 6.0
so it does work.
The web access button is greyed out because the the server is not
running.
There should be a start server button, click it and wait for a few
seconds for the server to start up.
If this doesn't work try re-installing the server (5.4.1 or 6), use
install preference pane for all users and enter your admin login. You
are admin of the computer aren't you?
Then set the start slim server to when I log in.
If this does not work try repairing permissions with disk utility.
Once you get the server working you can change settings to allow for
your music to be on an external HD.
Let us know how you get on.

My plan is to keep the mp3s stored on a lacie ext hard drive and have

stored on an external drive.
It played all the songs in my library for the last couple of years, but
now no luck. The song count is half what it should be and several of
the

Squeezebox (as opposed to the Web interface) don't play but display
STOPPED on the display.

A couple of things have changed recently that could be behind it.
First, I upgraded the Slim Server software recently to version 6.0.1
because the Squeezebox was having frequent trouble connecting to Slim
Server (even though it found the network fine).
Also, I recently updated to iLife '05, which upgraded iTunes to version
4.7.1 (30). Not sure which event triggered the problem.
I followed the suggestions in the FAQ about changing the path for the
iTunes library and changing it back with no luck. I also changed the
preferences so the Slim Server starts when I log in to get around the
problem of the external drive not being mounted right away.
I also tried their suggestions about changing the Keep Music Folder
Organized settings. I've done all this twice but with no results.
Any suggestions?

Point the .xml location to there and hit rescan. I think the music

receiver, and decent speakers and my thinking going into this process
is that I would not be able to hear much of a difference between 192
and a higher standard.
This idea may be considered blasphemy to any audiophiles out
there, but it seems to make sense to me in terms of conservative
storage space ustage. Currently I have around 800+ CDs to get in
there, I have ripped around 350 of them and there is a ton of room left
on the drive so that I will be able to continue to add music to it all
the time once my current discs are all loaded. Any thoughts that any
of you have are appreciated.
Also...once it is set up and I have the music streaming, what
are some modifications that all of you have made, what do you consider
the most important additions, and what would you do first with your new
system? It will be a rough couple of days waiting for friday, thank
you
for any of your thoughts.

It would be useful to have this signposted on the site... which of
course begs the old question about how mature the mainstream releases
should be... but for now i just need to know which release will play
uninterrupted music the longest
5.4.1. But if you need to run an SB2 you must run 6.something.
I've been running the 6.0.2 nightlies with good results. I'm surprised
that 6.0.2 hasn't been officially released yet - there must be dozens

bug fixes since 6.0.1. Not exactly time-tested, but how much worse can
it be than the 6.0.0 and 6.0.1 releases?

You can adjust the delay in the server settings to make it wait

Perhaps I am expecting too much in which case please feel free to say
so
! I'm a longtime happy slim owner - up until recently I've run the 5.4
server on a martian netdrive (low power linux box), but, for closer
integration with itunes and my ipod etc, I've decided to experiment
with putting the server on my new mac mini, where I also intended
doing
the ripping from within iTunes using blacktree's lame plugin. I have a
slimp3 and a SB1. 6.x releases on my martian seemed to crash a lot
when
trying to open radio streams, so now seemed a good time to move
across,
and I also took opportunity to copy music from my 10/100-only
accessible Martian to an external firewire drive.

So far so good - after remembering to open both ports on my mini's
firewall (original slimp3 only needed 9000, hence much confusion on my
part) and installing 6.0.2, setting iTunes to look to music I've
placed
on external firewire drive all works nicely. Live search is great !
(but
doesn't work in Camino yet?)

OK - now I figured I'd test the end-to-end workflow, ripping a CD and
observing it turning up in itunes and slim with no extra copying. And
it works ! Yay. But, while ripping it basically seems impossible to do
anything with my slims whatsoever. In fact, they both blackout and
lose
connection sporadically as the rip progresses, I _think_ coordinated
with the write of file and tag info - is this simply because the
itunes
communication with the server is thrashing during the encode ? Is
there
anything I can do here ? Anyone in same boat ? I'd expected that if I
was listening that the rip perhaps would go more slowly but that the
server would still be able to serve with a reasonable 'nice' level but
no can do it seems - moreover I even lose the displays completely.

This all makes me a little worried that my mini is not going to work
out as a server if it's doing anything else which is a tad disturbing
given that it's a 1.42GHz with a gig of memory and using external fast
firewire drive.
Am I missing some way of optimising my setup and workflow? I'm also
very curious about other mini owner's experiences of running the
server
- I'm almost contemplating sticking an old laptop on the network ONLY
to
act as a music server, to be honest

Thanks for a great product, despite my grips above! and for all the
superb support,
-g.

Tried to listen to some stations today but no music came through the
sb or web interface, but I am able to see the station names etc.

Normal music plays fine.
Are the open ports 9000, 3483, 9090 tcp and udp correct?
Tried running with firewall off still no joy.
Do I need to do any port forwarding on the router?

As I said I haven't used it for a while so I'm probably missing
something stupid.

Nope - the fault is ours, not yours. The problem seems to occur if
you use iTunes and do not have an audio directory set up. That
should be unrelated to radio, I know, but it isn't. We'll be
putting the fix into a re-rolled 6.1b1 tonight.

I second enabling ac3 files to be played.

Steven Moore

2: Enable SlimServer to play AC3 files; i.e., create a new File Type
AC3 with stream options wav, flac, mp3 and pcm. The first three stream
options would decode the AC3 stream and stream it as wav, or encode to
flac or mp3. The last option would just stream the AC3 data so that it
can be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder connected to one of the
digital outputs of the SB2. Ideally this option would also
automatically disable the analog outputs when playing an AC3 file.

[slim] loosing contact when browsing new music > all songs

2005-07-06 Thread Steven Moore

Using 6.1.b1 latest. on mac 10.4.1. ~ 12,000 tracks.
Is anyone else loosing contact when browsing the new music > all
songs folder? Contact lost from 2 mins to 4 mins, sb comes back on as
normal after this time.

This is reproducible.
Consulting console with d_info set the server is checking status of
files.

Is the loss of contact due to the number of files involved?

On a related note, sometimes when searching the sb looses contact
with the server for a few seconds, then returns to normal also.

Not using the web browser just the sb itself, perl is around 90% cpu

Larger scale, this is the nature of the single-process beast --

Re: [slim] Re: iTunes 5

2005-09-09 Thread Steven Moore

My upgrade went fine, as did another machine here.
Your itunes Libraries are in your music folder in your home folder.
itunes 5 has created its own library in place of the old one. The old
one is in a folder called previous itunes Libraries in the music
folder also.

I know it's a new library file because the date created was 7/9/05.

Your Library file could have been corrupted before updating.
You can either try and get your old Library file to work by deleting
the new one and putting the old one in it's place (renaming it iTunes
Library). When you restart itunes it will attempt to update you
Library again. This probably won't work.

or redo your playlists.
I know it's a bit late now but it's a good idea to back up your
libraries regularly to avoid this.

Spinning the weighted volume knob will have affect of fast scrolling.
-- volume mode is entered automatically (timer expires) or by

[slim] sound glitch on pause (SS 6.2)

This may have been present on previous versions of slim server but I
think I would have noticed it.
Has anyone else noticed when pausing a song just after you press the

is a sound for a split second. It seems like the SB is playing a little
bit more of the song. After this there is silence. At high volumes this
sounds bad.
Obviously the ideal function would be immediate silence.

I'm not sure if the server is still scanning but I can hear the ex fw
drive being continually accessed.

On a similar theme does anyone know when doing a rescan for new music
if ss checks every file?
If it does I was looking at the music folder and thought that it may
faster to just check each folder of each artist to see if it has been
modified since the last rescan and if it hasn't just skip that folder.
In my case ~13,000 track tests against ~1000 artist tests, an obvious
performance gain. Just an idea.

[slim] Re: OS X User Switching Problem When Installed For All Users

2006-01-09 Thread Steven Moore

This sounds like a permissions problem, I would guess your music is in
your user area and this is not accessible when you are logged into your
wife's account because your wife cannot access your area.
Check the activity monitor and see if the perl process is owned by your
wife when the problem happens.

If you are using itunes your music will be in your music folder >iTunes
folder >itunes.

This might be overcome by moving the music folder (only the music
folder not the .xml files etc) to a shared folder in the users folder
or onto an external hd which you can set to ignore permissions. I have
my music folder on an external hd and this works fine. You can set the
place where itunes looks for music in itunes preferences >advanced
>general.

I was checking and the perl process is owned by myself.
Does anyone know if it's the case the perl process is owned by the
first person to log in?

different versions of slimserver and I was wondering how slimserver
'expects' the tags to look like. ie what is the proper format of the
tags that will mean that that tracks/albums etc are scanned in
correctly into slimserver.
I've never seen a document from slim devices (excuse me if there is
one) which describes the format for which tags should take and it may
be useful for de-bugging if we had a standard format that we could all
reference and having that standard may help with tag issues.
Even better would be if slim devices or a third party produced some
scripts that could run through our music files to check for
irregularities and could help pinpoint possible problems and possibly
fix these errors.
I don't know how long it would take to produce such documents and
scripts but the time invested may be recouped in less de-bugging and
writing error checking code.
If we where all on a level playing field as far as tags are concerned
we could at least rule out one source of problems.

[slim] Re: slim server on mac

Perl is slimserver, the server is probably creating it's database of
songs, give it an hour or so and the cpu usage will fall to normal.
