RE: [slim] Re: Powered speakers

2006-08-10 Thread Stuart Cooper
There are of course the new Acoustic Energy Aego M units:

http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/catalog/default.php?manufacturers_id=44

These come in at £99.95 and are available in black or white, conveniently
matching the Squeezebox. :o) I have a set of Aego 2s myself, and for tbe
price they're excellent.

I apologise for re-inventing the wheel.
I had done a few searches in the forum, but most threads seemed to reference
either US web sites or products.

I'm also trying to keep the budget down as much as possible, anything over
£100 seems a little excessive for what I require.

I suppose what I'm looking for is more along the line of a set of PC
speakers (either stereo or 2.1), something nice and simple that can be
'unobtrusive', eg. mounted to the wall.

I'll do some more thinking/research.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. :-)

RE: [slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-22 Thread Stuart Cooper
In my defence, I would like to point out that several update emails have
been sent out with regard to the delays shipping the Qnaps and I do
endeavour to reply to all emails and phone messages, and usually succeed.
Most are answered within 24 hours, but often a lot quicker.

I've also posted on here with regard to the firmware issues and was dealing
with some people on the weekend we first encountered the disk problem.

Cards are never debited until units ship, or we are informed that they have
shipped by one of our distribution partners. Due to issues with transactions
"timing out" after 3 months if not released, I had to release one or two
Qnap transactions before they shipped (to avoid further delays retaking
fresh payments) - although to be fair, I understood the units would ship on
28th Feb and the transactions were released on that day. Due to a last
minute problem, they were delayed a little longer and then we had the
firmware problem. Paul will back me up on this.

Annoying and frustrating yes, but there's nothing Machiavellian about it.

Incidentally, while a debit date may show 20th Dec for example, that will be
the day the payment was authorised, and not the date it was debited, which
in this case will obviously be many weeks later when the payment is
released.

I hope that this clears up any misunderstandings.

Very poor! I ordered mine from them in November and I have had to do all the
chasing regarding delivery. My status on their web site shows the Qnap was
posted on 28 February yet I have received nothing. Now I am only getting an
answering machine when I call and no reply to email.

No status reports and all the information I got about the upgrade situation
was from this site. My business partner ordered one around the same time and
he has heard nothing yet his credit card has been debited! Suggest you shop

RE: [slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-13 Thread Stuart Cooper
Hi all,

There does seem to be a common problem writing files to the Qnap, that
doesn't seem to have affected the 400Gb units so far. Reading doesn't appear
to be a problem however.

I have now spoken to Paul at Progressive who is currently at Cebit. He will
be returning tomorrow late afternoon and will contact everyone as soon as
possible after that to discuss the way forward. He is also liaising with
Qnap as to the best way to resolve this unfortunate issue quickly.

We would both just like to reassure everyone that this will be addressed as
a matter of urgency and resolved before any further devices are shipped. If
you have details of your problem, please inform Paul directly at

RE: [slim] Re: Slim Devices at Amazon

2005-11-25 Thread Stuart Cooper
I understand your frustration... :o)

The old SB2 is still listed as so many external links point to it, so rather
than present folk with a "page not found" screen when they've been directed
there, it's simply left there for the transition period, to provide a
pointer to the new version. The SB2 has not been available to any of us in
the UK since the new SB3 was released.

The high shipping cost to RoI is indeed ridiculous - I've had that
conversation with DHL, but it's their tariff - I'm just having to pass it
on. They also charge the same for Jersey and Guernsey - and they have UK
postcodes! I've shipped to customers' friends or relatives in Norhern
Ireland before now, so that they can pick them up from there.

Many, many of my customers will tell you that they have ordered one day and
had a Slimp3, SB1 or SB2 in their hands the next morning. By and large,
that's the norm - except when new models are released and we all have to
wait. C'mon guys - someone attest to that for me... :o)

Stuart,

1. I went to your website and got excited when I found SB2 wired listed. I
clicked on it and got "NO LONGER AVAILABLE - NOW REPLACED BY NEW
SQUEEZEBOX".
If its no longer available why bloody list it???

Not a good start.

2. How on earth can you charge £35 to send it less than 150 miles south of
the Northern Ireland UK Border?

3. I would prefer to deal with the "faceless Amazon" as you put it because I
can go to their website, order it, have it turn up within 48 hours without
any fuss. I mean, I've been looking to buy (Credit card
waiting) for the best part of a month now. How bloody difficult should it be
to buy the product?

I'm not having a personal dig at you Stu and forgive me if my tone comes
across that way. I am just very VERY frustrated.

I've never heard of them either and if I lived any further south I'd be in

of it on eBay.

I've had people ring up about the Roku, have explained the benefits of the

will be Slimp3'd over the winter!

I think that is not the best idea (add an HD to an SB2). The whole idea
is that I don't HAVE to have all of the infrastructure (and costs -
silent PCs are expensive) of a media PC to stream high-quality audio
from SOMEWHERE on the net to my audio system. Given that my server
solution has about 1TB of disk spinning (250 GB of audio), I doubt that
you could call an SB3 slim.

[slim] UK Publicity: Squeezebox2 on "The Gadget Show" CH5

2005-09-22 Thread Stuart Cooper
I recently submitted a Squeezebox2 for review by Channel 5's "The Gadget
Show" here in the UK. It is on the first episode of the new series, full
details below.

With regard to earlier threads on the Squeezebox's profile in the UK - I've
been promoting SD in the UK since we began selling the Slimp3, with some
success. Initially, the Mac based press were more interested, but it was
also in PC Pro etc. I also had it feature (albeit briefly) in HiFi World not
so long ago.

Anyway, the show were pleased with the unit - as was the delivery guy who
returned it! :0)

You can also install SlimServer on a Linksys NSLU2 NAS box(check out
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/InstallSlimServer )

I did this and it works great. It uses hardly any power and is completely
silent. It might be a little slower to load the slimserver web pages etc.
than a full blown PC, but it's not too bad. The 6.1.1 release of slimserver
has really sped things up in that regard anyway.

Cheers
James

RE: [slim] UK Wireless Squeezebox2 availability?? (black) frommultitask-computing

2005-04-24 Thread Stuart Cooper
Ooops - not sure how I missed replying to you Bruce. Very sorry about that.
I do try to reply to very single email usually.

I have been sending an awful lot of individual emails of late though, as
well as newsletters - you're down as "unsubscribed" at the moment; if I can
subscribe you, you'll get the newsletter updates. I'd hope to get your unit
shipped from the next batch to hit the UK though.

probably demand has been just THAT good

Shipments were backlogged due to orders. Slim Devices has posted here sayign
they expected to have those backlogs cleared up in the next couple weeks.
This would mean we are now nearing that time. However, shipment time to the
UK has to be factored in, and the MultiTask would have to deal with their
back orders in sequence. Usually they are very responsive, even in these
forums.
Hopefully Stuart can provide more updated information.

RE: [slim] Re: softsqueeze $420!!!

2005-04-13 Thread Stuart Cooper
Hi Richard (and Johan) and thanks for the vote of confidence. Much
appreciated.

I'd love to be able to drop the price on the Trinloc, but it's set by the
manufacturer and the margin is teeny, so it won't be dropping in the
foreseeable future. On the plus side, it works! I've been using a demo unit
for weeks now, with no major problems - on a (frankly flaky) PC with XP SP2
and the dreaded VIA USB chipset.

We can ship to Ireland (North via DHL, or South via Parcelfarce), the cost
varies according to number of units ordered.

Well if you need another one try www.multitask-computing.co.uk as mentioned
by somebody else. I got mine for the same price as my SB1 for £148.99
including postage. This was displayed on the Multitask website though "We
will ship to EU countries subject to cleared funds upon request, but we are
unable to ship to destinations outside the EU". So I guess that postage may
be a little more to Ireland, but still probably cheaper than the buying from
the US.

£190 seems a little excessive for the UK.

dabs.com has had them for a little less but their supply seems to be very
intermittent at best. Multitask have provided a very good service in my
opinion. I'm just hoping they con drop the price a little on their Trinloc
DAB receiver (nudge nudge if Stuart is lurking!).

RE: AlienBBC vs DAB (was Re: [slim] (UK) Powered speakers for SB)

2005-03-21 Thread Stuart Cooper
DAB is now a possibility again using the Trinloc DAB USB radio in the UK -
at least on Windows. When used with DABBAR (1.3b1 or above) all stations can
be streamed via HTTP and integrated with Squeezebox2, Squeezebox or SliMP3.

I am using one with Windows XP SP2 and Squeezebox & SliMP3 and it’s working
very well - even in my poor signal area (the highest I get is about 30%
signal). It even works with my VIA USB chipset, which the Wavefinder would
have nothing to do with! More details here:

http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=30
6

- for anyone interested, I'm retailing it at £129.99 as of this week :-)

Further option: get a free-to-air TV box that has Audio out. In the UK
Comet do them (Sagem?).

RE: [slim] Does anyone have a broken squeezebox?

2005-03-07 Thread Stuart Cooper
I have one that DHL kindly ran over with a forklift truck... some of it
still bears a passing resemblance to a Squeezebox, although the display is
not at all well. I will have a proper look and see what is left in one piece
and let you know... Which bits do you need?

Difficult to explain why, but I could really use a squeezebox without a
display.

Does anyone have one with a broken display that they would like to sell?

Also one with a working display, but broken audio circuitrt would be equally
useful.

yes you figured it out, I need to seperate the visual and audio
functionalilty of the squeezebox into two different rooms.

Thanks,
Bruce.
