[slim] LAN - no password, WAN - password. Possible?

2009-05-25 Thread WSLam

Just wondering if this is possible.
When I access my SqueezeCenter within my LAN, I obviously do not want
to be bothered with entering a username and password everytime. But I do
stream music to remote location at times (i.e. office) and by opening up
the port to access my music library, I thought it would be a good idea
to have password protection enabled.
Is it possible to have a WAN-access only password enabled?

Re: [slim] When Duet controller can support Chinese Characters ??

2008-09-04 Thread WSLam

Has Slim Devices officially come out to say that support for Chinese
display will never be supported on the Controller?

That is a real shame. Even though 99% of my music library is not in
Chinese, I would still like to read the 1% of my library using the
Controller. SD has always support for multilingual display on the SB3,
this is really a step backward... I wonder if it was a deliberate
decision or an oversight?

[slim] Auto-Sensing Amp for In-Wall/Ceiling Speakers

2008-08-13 Thread WSLam

I am in the middle of renovating my new place and will have about 10
SB3/Duet setup throughout the house. Other then my main HiFi rig, I am
hoping to deploy in-wall/ceiling speakers. The speakers wire will run
to a place where the Duet/SB3 will be placed. What I now need is a
auto-sensing amp that 1) must be small, 2) requires little to no
ventilation. I do not need lots of power, they are just for background
music.

Any suggestion? Thanks!

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote

I have reinstalled twice, same thing. Any idea?

The bug is well documented. It's real. If you have not noticed it, feel

wmadec is used to decode WMA files. Are you listening to WMA files? If
not, you should not see it, but if so, then it's there to decode your
music and converting it into FLAC and then stream it to your
SB3/Transporter...

There is a new wmadec out there. I do not know if it does anything
about your memory problem, but you may want to give it a try:

Yes I am running the latest version.
The bug (chop off one) is actually being tracked as Bug 2985.
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2985

It is not easy to detect. I cannot imagine how anyone could detect it
unless they have more some odd classical recordings that breakup a
piece into multiple tracks.

Hi Kirk,
WMA Lossless is not supported by SB3 or even the Transporter.
Apparently Microsoft charges a licesning fee for WMA Lossless decoder
(in hardware)... I think that is why you do not see many WMAL decoder
in hw.
If you look under your SS's Server settings\File Types, you will see
there are several way to decode WMA... WMA (non Lossless) will get
streamed, but lossless usually gets converted to FLAC.
If you convert all your WMAL into FLAC, I believe the quality should be
identical. I think it will be like unzipping, and then instead of
zipping, you use another compression, say RAR, but the data bits should
remain identical.

Hi abergdc,
Actually, your suspicion may not be the reason... I do not think it is
network related. Why? Because WMA does not get directly streamed to
your SB3. All WMA Lossless gets converted to FLAC or WAV (depending on
your SS config) since SB3 itself does not support WMA Lossless. So
whether you are playing WMA Lossless or FLAC, really SS is streaming
FLAC to your SB3.

[slim] WMA Lossless users

2006-09-22 Thread WSLam

I have been trying to diagnose a few WMA related problems and I am
wondering if this may be machine/installation related or is this a
general issue with SlimServer/SB3 playing WMA Lossless.

Here are the issues:

1) end of songs gets cut off. this is usually difficult to detect
except with some classical recordings where they breakup a piece into
multiple tracks. I am not talking about gapless playback, I am talking
about a small piece at the end actually got chopped off.

2) an ocassional burst of pink noise while playing

3) music just stops. SB3 spectrum analyzer has no activity. no more
music. hit play again and the piece will played from the beginning...
but it stops. This usually happens only after more then 30 mins of
playing.

Why I think these are WMA related? Because if I convert them to FLAC,
then none of these issues exists anymore. Everything becomes ok.

Please help fellow WMA Lossless users...

[slim] 6.5 Installation not overwriting some files?

2006-09-21 Thread WSLam

While trying to diagnose a WMA related problem, I found out that the
files under \SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread were not
updated when I installed 6.5.

I tried to reinstall, manually stop SlimServer, then reinstall etc, but
no use. The files remain the old versions from earlier versions. In fact
the files in the folder were dated from Nov 2005.

At the end, I manually deleted the files and install 6.5 again. And
sure enough, newer files are finally written into the folder.

Maybe the installation is not overwriting all the old files? Wonder if
anyone else has this problem or maybe this is just my machine acting
up?

[slim] SlimServer File Type settings

2006-09-21 Thread WSLam

Quick question. Under SlimServer File Types settings, for WMA, e.g., I
have:

Windows Media FLACwmadec/flac (Checked)
Windows Media MP3 wmadec/lame
Windows Media WAV wmadec (Checked)
Windows Media Windows Media (built-in) (Checked)

Question. I only have WMA Lossless, I know SB3 does not have native WMA
Lossless support, so it must either transcode to FLAC or WAV for
streaming. Question is how do I know what is SlimServer doing? to FLAC
or WAV when both are checked?

Thanks.

[slim] Re: Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)

2006-08-29 Thread WSLam

Dennis, I have done all that you suggested. I have tried 3 diff SB3 as
well. SB3 is ONLY have a problem with the Level One. the only thing
that I have not yet tried is a diff powerline ethernet adaptor.

can't see dhcp, can't see slimserver, hence non pingable.

i think this is a specific incompatability users should note.

Hi mark, thanks for your suggestion.
1) I am using a good, regular cat5 cable
2) The same cable works for my notebook
3) Just tried to do a reset, and same thing. Can't find
DHCP/SlimSerever
4) It killed my linksys router. my linksys rebooted when SB3 starts to
searching for a DHCP server.

Again, with a computer, there is NO problem.

[slim] Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)

2006-08-28 Thread WSLam

I am helping my friend setting up a SB3 in his stereo system. Since his
wireless router is a little far, so he bought a pair of Level One
PL-2021 Powerline ethernet adaptors.

I spent two hours at his place and could not get then to work with the
SB3. So I took them home. And they worked when I tried to connect a
notebook computer to it. The problem is with the SB3. SB3 cannot work
with the Level One. It can't 'see' the network...can't find DHCP
server, can't find SlimServer. I already tried using static IP instead
of DHCP, but same results. But as soon as I replace the SB3 with a
computer, it works right away. So something is incompatble between the
SB3 and the Level One adaptors. Anyone has any idea what the
incompatability may be?

You are of course right. With SB3 wireless capability, it is not
difficult to have a computer that is far enough for noise not to be an
issue. Since I also wanted a MCE machine, I went with the Hush. Sort of
kills two birds with one stone, at a price. Fanless is expensive! The
thing weighs like 20 to 30lbs! it's one gigantic heat sink!

Re the closed nature of the system, it's not just the tagging system,
but also (a) the recommended way of putting your music on the system
("send it to us"), and (b) the prohibition on hardware tinkering (what
if 400GB gets too small?).

Oh, that. Well, it's because of the fanless thing...everything is
connected inside via heatpipeps. I do have an external HDD connected
using SATA in a SmartDrive HDD Enclosure, so I could have ore capacity
without adding a single fan...

I OTOH just wishes that UI will include one for CLASSICAL music.

closed you mean their tagging?
i agree... but then, classical music just doesn't have the same market
appeal... I doubt the mainstream software will change to accomodate the
tagging needs of classical music.

It's funny that when I did it on my own, I went down the same path. The
computer they are using is a Hush...SOTA Fanless. I simply won't settle
for any fan based cooling computer...as time passes by, dusts gathers
and it will be noisy (at least in HK).

I also picked WMA Lossless. Personal choice. No intention to defend
myself here.

Anyway, the high price is mostly due to the Hush. It's a first rate
computer and what I use as my MCE and SlimServer now. It's been
flawless. Fanless...is imo a start for any audiophile. Now only if they
would bundle a few SB3 in the setup, they can consider themselves truly
walking down the Audiophile path.

[slim] news for classical music users

2006-05-12 Thread WSLam

I spent a good portion of 2005 digitizing my CDs so that I can build my
listening experience around the SB2 (then, SB3 now).

Then this comes along... I wish I waited a tad longer.

http://www.fortunaclassical.com/

I have a Hush as my music server! Same computer! But they are still
using PC as source, whereas I think SB3 is a clearly superior solution!
SD should work with Fortuna and create a few packages!

But Fortuna will be a GREAT START for people migrating to the SB3.

Now I wish SlimServer offers interfaces like the one they have...

[slim] Re: Financial condition of Slim Devices, Inc. ?

2005-08-03 Thread WSLam

The most important thing we can do is to make sure we do our own share
of 'marketing'. I'd assume we all here love our SB2 and how it has
changed the way we listen to music. But given the SD is still a pretty
small company, they can't really afford marketing like Sonos. If we all
do our share to spread the word, I think that is the best thing we can
do to make sure any diaster to happen down the road. We, the people who
gave it a fair try, know the SB2 is a wonderful product. But if you go
to say audioasylum.com, you will see people who are so stuck up and
insist in using a noisy PC as their music server (running some fancy
ASIO sound card)... they just don't see the beauty and simplicity of
the SB2... we need to do our share to make sure words get spread out.

I am going to give a demo to a group of friends tonight. =)

[slim] SlimServer on ReadyNAS600

2005-07-18 Thread WSLam

Infrant released a new firmware for their ReadyNAS600 NAS last week.
Along with the upgrade is an optional component users can upload to the
ReadyNAS. SlimServer 6.02!

Finally, a VERY easy way to run SlimServer in a NAS without any
hacking.

The process is very simple. Upgrade your firmware as usual, then
download the additional SlimServer component. Upload SlimServer like
the firmware. The ReadyNAS needs to reboot twice (after firmware
upgrade, then SlimServer).

Upon the second bootup, SlimServer will be up and running! The whole
process took me less then 10 mins.

http://www.infrant.com/support.htm#download

It's just 6.02 as usual! Seems to work very well.

My only gripe now is to find a way to truly silence the ReadyNAS. Any
idea?

This surely is a great way to run SlimServer. JAVA takes up too much
resources on Windows desktop imo. I much prefer to run SlimServer on
another computer other then the one I use day to day...

Yes, the 4th disk can be used as a hot spare. so like i said, you can
have up to 2 disks died on you.

Arthur, you from HK too? So am I. I actually know the distributor and
have sold a few for them. Contact me if you wish to get one. the only
problem right now is that the NAS will be best placed in a separate
room since the fan may be too noisy for a music server. but it's pretty
quiet... not as quiet as you may want.

i have 2 myself, both running 4x400GB. i did a short write up on it on
www.pixource.com... anyway, email me... or PM me.

2005-07-01 Thread WSLam

NAS itself just means Network Attached Storage. So basically a hard disk
on the network for everyone to access and share.

The ReadyNAS is 'cool' because it is also a hardward based RAID5.
meaning, you get data redundancy. In a 4 disk RAID5 config, you have
have up to 2 disks died on you without losing a single file. and you
can then hot swap hdd (bad ones) out and replace them with good hdd of
the same capacity. the RAID will rebuild itself for full protection.

Imagine losing 400GB of music... ouch...

2005-06-28 Thread WSLam

My SB2 has been working fine, feeding into my TacT RCS2.0s.
Just about 20 mins ago, problem begins. Nothing has changed. Cables are
the same, WiFi Connection is the same. Sound coming out has a slight
'pop' to it every 10 secs or so, and the loudness seems to fluctuate as
well. I have rebooted all related components, router, computer
(slimserver), SB2 and TacT. Same problem. It seems like all of a
sudden, my TacT is having problem locking onto the signal. Cable is an
Audio Note Sogon between the SB2 and TacT.

Any help will be appreciated.
