Apparently Microsoft charges a licesning fee for WMA Lossless decoder (in hardware)... I think that is why you do not see many WMAL decoder in hw. If you look under your SS's Server settings\File Types, you will see there are several way to decode WMA... WMA (non Lossless) will get streamed, but lossless usually gets converted to FLAC. If you convert all your WMAL into FLAC, I believe the quality should be identical. Hi abergdc, Actually, your suspicion may not be the reason... I do not think it is network related. Why? Because WMA does not get directly streamed to your SB3. All WMA Lossless gets converted to FLAC or WAV (depending on your SS config) since SB3 itself does not support WMA Lossless. [slim] WMA Lossless users
I have been trying to diagnose a few WMA related problems and I am wondering if this may be machine/installation related or is this a general issue with SlimServer/SB3 playing WMA Lossless. Here are the issues: 1) end of songs gets cut off. this is usually difficult to detect except with some classical recordings where they breakup a piece into multiple tracks. I am not talking about gapless playback, I am talking about a small piece at the end actually got chopped off. 2) an ocassional burst of pink noise while playing 3) music just stops. SB3 spectrum analyzer has no activity. no more music. hit play again and the piece will played from the beginning... but it stops. This usually happens only after more then 30 mins of playing. Why I think these are WMA related? Because if I convert them to FLAC, then none of these issues exists anymore. Everything becomes ok. Please help fellow WMA Lossless users... ws -- WSLam WSLam 'SB3' (http://www.slimdeviceas.com/) | 'Unidisk 1.1' (http://www.knekt.com/spec_sound/product_display.cfm?ProductID=179&activeNavBar=products&activeSubNavBar=Source) -> 'EMM Labs DCC2 SE' (www.emmlabs.com/html/audio/dcc2/dcc2.html) -> 'Acoustic Reality eAR1001' (http://www.acoustic-reality.com) > 'Magico Mini' (http://www.magico.net) 'Photos of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/gallery/1573984/1/87768997) WSLam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=830 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27739 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

While trying to diagnose a WMA related problem, I found out that the files under \SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread were not updated when I installed 6.5. Hi mark, thanks for your suggestion. 1) I am using a good, regular cat5 cable 2) The same cable works for my notebook 3) Just tried to do a reset, and same thing. [slim] Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)
I am helping my friend setting up a SB3 in his stereo system. Since his wireless router is a little far, so he bought a pair of Level One PL-2021 Powerline ethernet adaptors. I spent two hours at his place and could not get then to work with the SB3. So I took them home. And they worked when I tried to connect a notebook computer to it. The problem is with the SB3. SB3 cannot work with the Level One. It can't 'see' the network...can't find DHCP server, can't find SlimServer. I already tried using static IP instead of DHCP, but same results. But as soon as I replace the SB3 with a computer, it works right away. So something is incompatble between the SB3 and the Level One adaptors. Anyone has any idea what the incompatability may be? -- WSLam WSLam 'SB3' (http://www.slimdeviceas.com/) | 'Unidisk 1.1' (http://www.knekt.com/spec_sound/product_display.cfm?ProductID=179&activeNavBar=products&activeSubNavBar=Source) -> 'EMM Labs DCC2' (www.emmlabs.com/html/audio/dcc2/dcc2.html) -> 'Acoustic Reality eAR1001' (http://www.acoustic-reality.com) > 'Magico Mini' (http://www.magico.net) 'Photos of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/gallery/1573984/1/87768997) WSLam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=830 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26817 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

With SB3 wireless capability, it is not difficult to have a computer that is far enough for noise not to be an issue. Since I also wanted a MCE machine, I went with the Hush. Sort of kills two birds with one stone, at a price. Fanless is expensive! The thing weighs like 20 to 30lbs! it's one gigantic heat sink! The most important thing we can do is to make sure we do our own share of 'marketing'. I'd assume we all here love our SB2 and how it has changed the way we listen to music. But given the SD is still a pretty small company, they can't really afford marketing like Sonos. If we all do our share to spread the word, I think that is the best thing we can do to make sure any diaster to happen down the road. We, the people who gave it a fair try, know the SB2 is a wonderful product. But if you go to say audioasylum.com, you will see people who are so stuck up and insist in using a noisy PC as their music server (running some fancy ASIO sound card)... they just don't see the beauty and simplicity of the SB2... we need to do our share to make sure words get spread out. NAS itself just means Network Attached Storage. So basically a hard disk on the network for everyone to access and share. The ReadyNAS is 'cool' because it is also a hardward based RAID5. meaning, you get data redundancy. In a 4 disk RAID5 config, you have have up to 2 disks died on you without losing a single file. and you can then hot swap hdd (bad ones) out and replace them with good hdd of the same capacity. the RAID will rebuild itself for full protection. Imagine losing 400GB of music... ouch... -- WSLam WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon 'Photo of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/thumbnails.php?album=62) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SlimServer on NAS, coming soon!
I just learned that another NAS will natively support SlimServer soon! Infrant Tech (www.infrant.com)'s ReadyNAS600 (perform much better then the Buffalo one) will support SlimServer around mid July! http://www.infrant.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=992#992 -- WSLam WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon 'Photo of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/thumbnails.php?album=62) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Any update on Chinese display support on SB2?
I can go through the music via the web UI now, but it will so much cooler if I can see it through the SB2 itself. thanks. ws -- WSLam WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon 'Photo of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/thumbnails.php?album=62) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Popping sound
I do believe it was the cable, rather, the connectors. I tried another cable and it was fine. So it has to be the cable. [slim] Popping sound
My SB2 has been working fine, feeding into my TacT RCS2.0s. Just about 20 mins ago, problem begins. Nothing has changed. Cables are the same, WiFi Connection is the same. Sound coming out has a slight 'pop' to it every 10 secs or so, and the loudness seems to fluctuate as well. I have rebooted all related components, router, computer (slimserver), SB2 and TacT. Same problem. It seems like all of a sudden, my TacT is having problem locking onto the signal. Cable is an Audio Note Sogon between the SB2 and TacT. Any help will be appreciated. ws -- WSLam WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon 'Photo of my Setup' (http://photos.lam.ws/thumbnails.php?album=62) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks kdf, i guess that's what I was hoping for. [slim] Slimserver browsing behavior
I am sure there is a way to customize it, but can't figure it out. Hoping someone could help. When I am browsing through my music in SlimServer UI, say for example, when I click on Browse Genre\Classical\ on the third level (after classical), I get a list of all the composers, artists, composer etc how do i limit what gets displayed on the third level? So for example, under Browse Genre\Classical\Composers, I get only composers? Possible? ws -- WSLam *** *** *** WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Osx + Wma
Since I need to find a 'function' for the Mac MINI, I thought I would turn it into my SlimServer machine. The Mac mini has an 200GB external HDD connected to it via firewire, formatted with Mac file system. Now, the music are all in WMA Lossless. I cannot even get the Mac to play back these files, and when I access the files on my SB2, it says it cannot open. However, if I copy the file to the local mac hdd, it can. Any idea? Why can the files only be opened when it's in the internal HDD, and not the external? -- WSLam *** *** *** WSLam SB2 | Linn CD12 | Unidisk 1.1 | TacT RCS2.0s | Placette Audio Balanced Passive Preamp | Mark Levinson No.33H | Revel Ultima Salon ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
