Put me down for a positive MOG vote. 9.99, the price of one CD and it
streams to multiple devices. We have been using it for several months
on a Boom, Squeezebox Classic, iPad, and several computers. Hasn't

Re: [slim] Questions About SiriusXM

2011-10-06 Thread brucegrr

I gave up on this one. Not going to invest much time (and I have spent
hours already) trying to get this to work. The service added a bit of
depth to my music but not so much that I am willing to hassle with it
to get it to work.

Called SiriusXm to cancel the service and THAT was a nightmare. 20
minutes of inane questions asked by a girl barely able to speak the
English language.I was sure the next question was going to be are you
circumcised? :) Finally told them, enough, Cancel the service. Service
was cancelled and money refunded.

Wasted an evening.

[slim] Questions About SiriusXM

2011-10-05 Thread brucegrr

I thought (my first mistake) that adding SiriusXM would be just like
adding any other service. I thought it would be native to the player
and I would not have to switch to mysqueezebox.com. Am I missing
something here?

1. The app does not show up in the app list on the squeezebox server.I
restarted the server but nothing changed.

2. It is in the app list on iPeng.(though,at first, iPeng went crazy,
menus flashing, and it locked up. Next time it worked OK.

3. All the other apps I use (Pandora,Slacker,Mediafly, and TuneIn Radio
are integrated in the squeezebox server software. When I use these
services I am not logged out of server software and onto to
mysqueezebox.com site. With SiriusXM I am logged of the server software
and onto mysqueezebox.com. Is this how it is supposed to work, and if
so, seems a PITA.

Any help is appreciated. I have not added a new service in quite
awhile. We had a Class, boom, and Radio. (using Win 7 and an iPad to
access everything)

Re: [slim] Why do you continue to use your Squeezebox ?

2011-07-21 Thread brucegrr

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88916

Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ?

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that
  works good ?
- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to
  something else that supports this
- I would consider switching if someone offered something with
  similar functionality
- I have already started to look for something else but haven't found
  anything interesting yet
- I have already started or completed the transition to something
  else

We have a Squeezebox classic and a Boom. We are completely satisfied
with our Squeezebox system. All the players and the server are
hardwired. (eliminating any wifi issues.)

It works and that is what I want. I want to turn it on and listen to
music, podcasts, etc. I want a system that is easy for my wife to use.

We have been using Squeezebox devices since 2005. We are happy.Ipeng
made us more than happy. Now we can use an iPad to control everything.

I have plenty of hassles in life. I am glad Squeezebox is not one of
them.

[slim] Rhapsody and Playlists

2011-02-13 Thread brucegrr

I have been a Squeezebox user for 6 plus years. Recently I decided to
give Rhapsody a try. I a Classic Squeezebox, Boom, and I am using the
iPeng app on my iPad.

I am having difficulty figuring out how to make playlists while using
Rhapsody. When I click the icon to save a list of Rhapsody songs that
are playing the action never completes. All I get is a waiting for
192.168.0.xxx. I am unable to save the playlist.

With iPeng I am able to save the playlist but when I go back to the
playlist to play it it says unable to connect to server.

Maybe I don't understand the whole Rhapsody process. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

I'm still amazed that there's such a gap in the market that hasn't been

We have five computers in our home. 1 High school senior. 2 in college.
Squeezeplay allows everyone to listen to what they want while doing

Basically, everyone can listen to their own music and believe me in our

This most often is a problem with antivirus software. (and the log

Disable or uninstall your antivirus and try to scan again. If it scans
successfully you know what your problem is. I now Microsoft Security
Essentials has been a problem for a number of people.

With some antivirus programs exceptions can be put in to make the
antivirus software play well the the server software. I would encourage
you to search the forums on this issue. There has been a lot of
discussion about it.

This is not an official Logitech forum. It is a user forum that
sometimes practices the art of speculation. :)

Any other site linking to a discussion on this forum and considering it
an official Logitech statement...is acting quite foolishly.

As far as I know Best Buy has been selling Boom's for 150.00. I was in
Ft Wayne last weekend and there were three of them on the shelf. (and I
wish I had 450.00 to buy them) That's all I know for sure. I can
speculate but it would be just that...speculation. I usually leave the
speculation up to others who are more knowledgeable about Logitech
matters. Then we can make fun of them when they are wrong. :)

In other words..no one knows FOR sure.

overstatements of the problem only detract for making a proper
 diagnosis.)

Correct. Some of us can remember slacker not playing correctly as a
pretty common occurrence.

I think people often expect too much from the whole process of playing
music. As long as networks and the internet are involved.there are
going to be times when songs don't play, signals are dropped, servers
time out, servers are off line, congestion etc. it is just a fact of
life.

The issue is overall reliability. If an end-user is looking for 100%
up-time perfection.they are not going to be happy.

A problem with Slacker is rarely a Squeezebox problem. Most every
problem I have ever had with Slacker (or any internet music source) is
due to a problem on Slacker's end.

The hardware, software are an easy target when things don't go right
but often they not the problem.

Re: [slim] unknown artist album artwork

2009-12-12 Thread brucegrr

I have a bit of OCD so not having a cover art for an album drives me
nuts. I have very few albums without covers, but for those albums I
can't find a cover for I took a picture I like (of my wife), resized it,
and I use it for my unknown cover art.

[slim] Squeezeplay, Mediafly and the Chipmunks

2009-11-13 Thread brucegrr

I am using the latest beta of Squeezeplay. I am using Mediafly to listen
to some podcasts. On a quite a number of podcasts they begin to play in
a fast speed that makes them sound like the Alvin and the Chipmunks

this problem.

Squeezeplay problem? Mediafly problem?

Re: [slim] A Radio is supposed to play music, not silence...

2009-11-05 Thread brucegrr

Satellite latency + low connection speed...recipe for the problems
you are having.

Your connection speed is nowhere near broadband speed...Much closer
to dial-up.

Please remember that your streaming of radio is just one
program/service that is accessing the internet. I suspect you are
starting with less than a 100k when you stream radio.

You can try the various suggestions given here..but I
personally doubt you are going to get what you want at 100k. BPA is
right...32k stream maybeand like you said maybe, maybe,
maybe 128K (and that with the proviso that nothing else is taking
upbandwidth like web surfing, email, etc)

Re: [slim] Squeezebox: Wifi and Health

2009-10-21 Thread brucegrr

I certainly wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. Read. Be informed. Fact is
no one knows for sure the long term effects or the cumulative effect.
Often we want certainty when all science can give us is probability.

I always look at who is sponsoring a study and what do they stand to
gain from the study turning out a certain way.

My home is filled with wireless equipment. I am inclined to accept the
WHO viewpoint BUT I don't dismiss every report that suggests another
point of view. Definitive science has been proven wrong more than
once...so it always good to be receptive to opposing views (though I
don't think we should give a moments notice to the crackpots who use
pseudo-science and fear)

This issue will be studied many many more times in coming years. I am
sure more information will come to light as we go along.

Re: [slim] Double Listings in Albums

Load your music files in a tag program and look at the tags. That is the
only way to know for sure.

Personally, I delete ALL tags except the id 3v2 tags.Very simple to do
with mp3 tag. Since I use cover.jpg in each folder I also delete ALL
embedded cover art.

Cleans tags yield clean results :)

I would do as a previous poster suggested. Remove the the playlists.
Rescan and see it the problem goes away.

Re: [slim] Double Listings in Albums

2008-02-23 Thread brucegrr

As your library grows it is vitally important to have a single tagging
format. If you download much music you'll find a variety of tagging.

Are you using cover art? As a separate filed cover.jpg or is it
embedded? If you have BOTH of these then you can end up with duplicate
entries.

I use MP3tag to tag my files. When I first started I have thousands of
files to fix. Eventually, I cleaned it up and everything shows up like
it should.

A general observation..it seems Itunes is half the problem
people have with tags.

Which of the ip addresses (if any)shown in the DHCP clients is your
squeezebox? (Lewis, Alan, or Pat?)

Have you shut everything down and rebooted? Reboot your internet

with the clients it is managing.

Are the network setting (ip,submask, etc) the same in the router
settings as they are in the squeezebox?

NeilF,

Don't go to the web pages :) There, fixed it :)

I would like to know about your computer system. What is running in the
background? Using process explorer, what are the actual memory usages
for the programs running? Is your computer connected wirelessly or
wired to the network? Router type? Is this exact problem replicated in
Firefox and IE?

Your sig does not give enough hardware info to be helpful.

According to Process Manager it looks (and I could barely read the
.gif)that you have 5-7 programs running (either using or in background)
All of them use memory. Not talking about cpu usage here. Talking about
ram use. Big difference.

NeilF;229047 Wrote:
A lot of this is already in the thread...
 - Look in sig for hardware.
 - SB accesses network wirelessly.
 - What is running in the background? Nothing really... Typically my CPU
usage is sitting there at 0.

I think something to do with certain web pages is conflicting with
SlimServer and making it go 'mad' - Look at the shots in the following
 post...

You must have a very special machine that can run WinXp Pro, 12 programs
and every is fine :)all in 512mg of ram.

No offense, but I don't buy it.

It very well could be something else.but if I was
troubleshooting a customer's system I would start with reducing the
programs are running, freeing up ram memory and then see how it goes.
Have you disabled every unnecessary program and checked to see if this
fixes it?

Re: [slim] SlimServer / Squeezebox 3 users - PLEASE TRY THIS! (Gmail lags SlimServer)

2007-09-21 Thread brucegrr

Windows can work fine IF your processor speed and ram is sufficient. I
have two squeezeboxes running right now and I am surfing the net and
doing email. No stutters.

The lower the processor speed and the less ram you have the more likely
it is to tax the system.

If yo uleave gmail open then it is going to access the internet every
so many minutes. Only open it when you need to. Close all other non
essential programs. Turn off programs loaded in memory at start up
that aren't needed.

What windows version are you running? It should be noted that Firefox
tends to hog more and more memory the longer it is loaded. Well
documented. I am a Firefox only user and I have verified this memory
usage issue.

I don't use Gmail but I did load your other page with no problem at
all.

Every action uses memory. What operating system are you using?
Processor speed? ram? Are you using the most current version of

I don't think gmail alone is the problem. Gmail is no different than
any other function that consumes memory.

Think about it for a moment? How is Gmail able to affect a wireless
signal?

I just can't think of any way that Gmail would be affecting slimserver.

Is slimserver open in a window in Firefox when you access gmail? If so
, how about if you close the slimserver window(not slimserver just the
window) and access gmail? Same problem?

Not trying to give you a hard time here but the two biggest memory
users on my system are firefox and slimserver. They DO use memory.I
can't imagine fiefox showing 0 or little memory usage.

XP needs 256 megs ram just to run. So, depending on what else you have
running in the background, you could be having a memory issue.

[slim] Squeezebox died in the night

2007-08-04 Thread brucegrr

I woke up this morning to find my squeezebox dead. No display of any
kind.

1. Checked power supply cord by switching it with the other Squeezebox
we have. Nothing.

2. Checked brightness. Nothing.

3. Tried factory reset. Nothing.

I presume the coroners of this forum are going to said DEAD
so.

The Squeezebox is 16 months old. I am unhappy that it died so soon, but
I have owned enough electronics over the years that I know stuff
happens.

What does Slim Devices charge for repairs?

Any advice is appreciated.

You have a router, yes? Your internet is DSL/Cable, some form of

From what you described in your post it is not likely that SB3 is the
problem.

Re: [slim] Quality of Slimserver

2007-05-24 Thread brucegrr

Michael,

I have not tried Vista with slimserver. I based my opinion on what I
have read in the forums. Since my setup works PERFECTLY I hate to mess
it up. It looks like, from the release notes anyway, that maybe 6.5.2 is
much more Vista friendly.

My point is.Microsoft throws out to the world its latest and
greatest.and then eveyone expects instantaneous compatibility.
Never mind the fact that there are more people who clean the toilets at
Microsoft than work at Slim Devices. Vista is a major OS change
(especially in how it handles security)and Slim Devices should not be
faulted for there being issues that need to be worked out between the
OS and slimserver. I am quite confident it will all work out. People
need to be patient.

Re: [slim] Quality of Slimserver

2007-05-23 Thread brucegrr

Where are people getting the idea you need a powerful machine to run
slimserver? From what I have seen, slimserver will run on some pretty
slow, antiquated equipment. I think what really drives a lot of
this..is our impatience. If rescan takes 2 minutes longer than
we think it shouldit is the bloated software's fault. How easily we
forget the days of dialup and slow, slow, slow computers.Remember the
boot up, go get coffee, eat breakfast, and then just maybe you might be
able to use the computer days?

As to Vista and slimserver not working together well.I am sure they
will get that worked out. There are LOTS of programs and hardware that
do not play nice with Vista. I spent a whole day upgrading a new laptop
to Vista. Got all doneonly to find out my printer wouldn't work
with Vista and that HP might have the driver out by JULY!! Personally,
I like Vista.

Let's remember Vista was not on the supported OS list when most of us
bought our Squeezebox. At the time we bought it functioned according to
the stated system requirements. Just because Microsoft foists another OS
on the world doesn't mean slim devices must hurry up and make everything
compatible. Perhaps it is in their best interest to do so.but it
may not be a #1 priority. I have slimerver on an XP system. I want to
upgrade it to Vista but I am waiting until Vista is more mature and
slimserver is more Vista friendly.

[slim] 2nd Squeezebox with AudioEngine Speakers

2007-04-30 Thread brucegrr

A year ago I ordered my first Squeezebox. I have been nothing but
pleased (well ok a few of those upgrades I might have cussed a
little)

Today my second Squeezebox arrived. I ordered a white version. I
paired the Squeezebox with a set of AudioEngine Powered Speakers.

First, the AudioEngine speakers are phenomenal. Well built. Someone
cared about the end user experience when these were developed and
built. Great sound. Good range.

Second, the second Squeezebox took about 10 minutes to install and
setup. My first one is wired. I am using this one wireless. The setup
was flawless. The only hangup was on the Wep2 key. Of course the hangup
wasI need to learn to type :)Once I put in the right key it
worked.

For less than 600.00 I have a great sounding setup. I couldn't be more
pleased.

For the record I am using a Dlink DIR635 router, with a dlink switch. I
live in the country and the only internet service available is dial-up
up or wireless. I use wireless 128K up and 1 mgbit down. Seems to
handle all the internet features pretty good.

I crab from time to time when things don't work...so I want to say good
job Slim Devices when it goes right. Five stars from me, slim devices.

Bruce

PS. Those who told me that the multiple squeezeboxes would just simply
work were right. Thanks for the help in getting me past me hesitancy
about adding another squeezebox.

[slim] Re: Getting rid of slimserver

2007-01-23 Thread brucegrr

Are people really having trouble with Slimserver keeping up with 500
albums? Seems that there would a problem Other than Slimserver to cause
that. I have 14,000 songs that Slimserver can access and it never has
a problem. The only slowness I ever see is when I initially browse my
music via album cover. Slimserver will be a little sluggish for a bit
(15 seconds) but then it is fine.

It seems some on this thread want a swiss army knife approach to their
music. One program to do everything. As a long, long time computer user
I have found that rarely is this approach a good one. I think Nero is a
good example. Their recent release has everything but the kitchen sink
(and it is in there somewhere I suspect)IMO the program is bloated and
the extras they have crammed into the program are not as good as
separate programs that can be bought elsewhere.

The sad fact is most of the features software companies put in the
programs are never used. They do it to justify an upgrade I like the
fact that Slimserver does its job and does it well. Just like EAC and
mp3tag.

Few of us can do a lot of things well. Better to focus on what we can
do well and excel at it. I like software that takes the same approach.

long as your network settings are correct, router ports open, firewall
configured correctly..it just plain works.

I have found the wireless experience to be less than 100% Too many
variables..your mileage will vary. People should remember
wireless is not a perfect answer. There are a lot of different things
that can kill a wireless signal. I had a wireless network in one
home.and every a particular car drove by our houseon
his way to work..killed the signal. Every time. Can't explain
it. It just happened.

[slim] Re: Upgrading from 6.3.1 to 6.5.1

2006-11-07 Thread brucegrr

It should be noted that the vast majority of people have no trouble with
6.5.1

I would try it before giving up on it.

To revert to a previous version I would follow Mitch's advice in post
#3

6.5.1 works flawlessly for me.

[slim] Re: Live365 issue

2006-10-31 Thread brucegrr

I gave up using live365 via slimserver. Way too many login errors.
Always works with Squeeze Network.

I do not use Live365 very often. I have fallen in love with Pandora and
usually use it.
