Re: [slim] still have MusicIP confusion

2011-08-30 Thread chinablues

+3. Also, in MIP settings I have changed to 'Import All Song data from
MusicIP (slower)'. It may be slower, but not by very much. Some time
ago this 'worked for me' when there seemed to be other issues with MIP
scans...so I've left it there.

Re: [slim] 7.6 and MusicIP not working

2011-08-16 Thread chinablues

Tried a rescan, this time with MIP Plugin set to 'import all song data'
as opposed to 'only read mixable status'this time it appears that
Music IP Mix is there for all albums. Took 1 hr 29min to import all
data. Not too bad. But previously on 7.5.5, I always had it set to
'only read mixable status' and that always worked OK. Yes, Windows 7.

Re: [slim] 7.6 and MusicIP not working

2011-08-15 Thread chinablues

Agree that the file time/date is the key to new music. Out of interest,
checked my last scan timings. Music IP import, 14:52 min:secs for 68152
files. Seems very short to me? Music file scan shows 68141 music
tracks, so some small error in count. But if 14:52 mins is Music IP
import time and music scan time for same collection is 1hr 29 mins,
maybe I'm losing on the IP import?? I'd hate to wipe my Music IP
database & rescan again as that would take days or weeksand also,
Music IP seemed to be working fine in 7.5.5? I'll do another scan
tonight & see if that improves things. (actually, I don't use MusicIP
mix that much, but hate to see inconsistencies!)

Thanks for reply. Mostly in album view, the IP mix is there, almost
always in New Music it isn't there. But it's not consistent. Not sure
what is happening. I noticed though that some folder dates were not in
agreement with the contained file dates (maybe over 2 years difference).
What date does SBS use to identify the 'new music'file date or
folder date? Not sure why this would cause the problem though.

Re: [slim] Artwork for FLAC (not iTunes) music?

2009-10-09 Thread chinablues

Both MP3tag and Tag&Rename will find artwork (and other info) directly
by looking up Amazon.com. MP3Tag is free, but I prefer Tag&Rename.
(does other things apart from artwork). If you cannot find the artwork
on Amazon.com, I find http://www.cdcovers.cc/ to be quite useful.
Amazon.com typically has the folder.jpg in 300x300 or 500x500 pixels
size which is ideal. Cdcovers you download the album art separately and
then resize/rename to folder.jpg.

Re: [slim] Defection and challenge

2009-09-10 Thread chinablues

The OP's 'conclusion' post gave a good summary from his point of view,
but I have to agree with the comment from iPhone...QUALITY enters into
the picture for me. I started out on this music network quest with
Audiotron (anyone remember that?) streaming MP3's. While I was at the
computer trying to get it to work, my wife was in the sitting room
shouting 'turn that crap off'. The lowish MP3 quality offended her
ears. Then along came the Transporter & I found FLAC. Coupled with a
good amp and a pair of Kef 205/2's, this is (for me) audio nirvana. I
want a system that I KNOW is better than my ears. Just this last
weekend I culled 766 128kbs MP3s from my collection. Anything lower than
128Kbps was gone a long time ago. I'm getting old, I don't have the time
left to listen to crap.

I don't want music 'from the cloud', until as iPhone mentions, it comes
in FLAC quality.

Thus for the naive user, the first question before embarking on
networked music systems is: "Do you really spend time 'listening' to
music, or are you just looking for a nice system to give you background
noise?". Depending on the answer, you point them in the direction of
the radio or SB Networked music.

Re: [slim] Defection and challenge

2009-09-09 Thread chinablues

In an earlier post, the OP mentioned:

"Let's forget about CDs then and concentrate on library management"

This is for me the crux of any workable SB solution. It's a lot of
work and is not something your average joe would wish to do. I used EAC
extensively in the beginning, then db Poweramp for the ripping part.
But as has been mentioned, ripping accurately to FLAC is only part of
the puzzle, and it's perhaps only 10% at that. Tagging correctly is the
other 90%. I use Tag&Rename extensively for that. Sometimes mp3tag has
it's uses too, but nowhere as useful as Tag&Rename. Even a downloaded
FLAC always (in my library) has to be retagged, or have tagging checked
before it's deemed acceptable. Anal I know, and I agree this can be the
aspect of the whole solution that drives people away.

I know lots of folks that are interested in the SB solution and indeed
I have got a few up & running successfully. BUT they want me to handle
their 'library management'. Mostly they want something that 'just
works'. SB can do that with a good library. I don't know how good the
ripping services are, but I suspect for many that would be a good
starting point. Get their existing CD library ripped by a ripping
service & make sure they include that cost in the assessment of overall
system costs in the move to 'networked music'.

As others have mentioned, Itunes means for me death to a well
structured librariesit destroys them and feeds the user with it's
own version of what 'it thinks' the album should be. The users I have
got running have strict instructions to stay clear from
iTunes...doubtless some have got it working, but deep under the hood it
seems to 'mess about' with my very carefully structured library.

As the book library goes the way of the dodo, perhaps there's a new
career out there for some of the unemployed. Music Library Managers.
The OP mentioned the 'retirement' word I believe. Maybe it's not
retirement, just an new career opportunity!

Rebuffering was a pain for me. I have a transporter & duet.
Wirelessly, the Transporter on its own worked fine about 95% of the

always with FLAC files. Wireless strength to Duet receiver probably the
main issue. (seems to me the Transporter has better receptivity than
the duet in picking up wireless signals). Installed 3 homeplug units,
master at computer, & one slave unit at Transporter & Duet receiver
locations. (TV, Blu-Ray Player, AVR, TV receiver unit & Transporter all
connected to an ethernet switch & this connected to the Homeplug unit in
living room. (Aztech, 200Mbps ). Worked fine ever since.

2008-11-18 Thread chinablues

I assume we are talking about "The Rolling Stone Magazine 500 Greatest
Songs Of All Time". Downloaded from the internet. If so, this
collection is a bit of a bitch. Many tracks although ostensibly part
of the 'Same album' do in fact have some 'hidden' info which identifies
the source album for the individual track. I remember having the same
problem... I cannot recall exactly how I fixed it, but I suspect I
first used Tag&Rename to rename every file to contain the critical
information viz: Track number, Artist and Song Title. Then I think I
used MP3Tag to delete all tag information for every song in the
collection. This left only the bare file names. Then used Tag&rename
to re-create the tag information. Track #, Artist & Song Title coming
from the file name & the other common information like Album name,
genre, album art...via Tag&Rename's multiple file tagging feature.

PS do this fix up on a copy set of the original files!!

Re: [slim] Artwork annoyances and questions

2008-10-16 Thread chinablues

The issue I had with one artwork file (folder.jpg) per album was that
Windows Media Player (in Vista) would automatically resize this file
down to 200x200 pixels. OK if you want that, but not if you don't. I
managed to defeat this scanning/resizing function of WMP in Vista, but
was glad that I had embedded artwork in all the files. Thus I could
delete all folder.jpg files and run a 'extract folder.jpg from file
information' routine for all albums using Tag&Rename. This got rid of
all the 200x200 art files & replaced with the originals. Now I keep
the artwork file in both places, folder & in the tag itself

btw, you can set MP3Tag to show you how many artwork files are embedded
in each tag.

If Squeezecenter could control music flow to eg, Denon's range of
Networked Audio devices does this not imply the death of Squeezboxes?
Why have a transporter, squeezebox, duet receiver or boom when you can
stream wirelessly directly to one of these:

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/networked-audio-products.asp

OK, maybe the Denon gear does not match the Transporter specs, but I'd
guess it would come pretty close to squeezebox/duet specs. It appears
that FLAC (and WAV) is supported directly by the Denon boxes.

I have a Duet sitting on top of a standard sized Denon amp. Works fine
but looks ugly for bedroom ceiling speakers. I searched various places
in the UK & Singapore for a 'duet sized' amp. No joy. I have a
colleague about to spend a lot of money on a wireless system. He will
probably go Sonos because as Peter mentioned, they got that right. For
some folks it's the 'form factor', not the sound. I don't need a built

amp of acceptable performance in China.. Add this to the catalog for
folks that want a simple Duo Duet package.

Agree with Puzzler. It ain't a wireless issue. I've been running
FLAC's on a wireless network to Transporter for almost as long as the
Transporter has been on the market. Never seen this problem until
'recently'. I'm typing this listening to Etta James flawlessly on
FLAC. But as per my previous post, it (or another track) could
suddenly start the stuttering/rebuffering issue.

Late here. Maybe I'll try some things tomorrow as it seems to be
difficult to find a 'hard' fault here. Questions/thoughts:

1. Is it a 7.3 beta issue?
2. Is it certain tracks & not others?
3. I've applied Replay Gain on a lot of tracks (using dbpoweramp).
Maybe it's something to do with this? (perhaps some tracks don't have
RG & some do...I'll check more tomorrow)
4. Recently I added a Duet. Is it something to do with streaming to
two devices? (transporter & duet)

I had similar issues with FLAC re-buffering a week or so back. Now OK.
Going back further in time, FLAC ran fine for me. I don't know why it
went from working to stuttering to working. I frequently install the
latest Beta (now with 7.3 - 23276), so it could have been one of the
earlier 7.3 betas that had an issue. Also been fiddling with memory on

for a while then back to 8. I cannot correlate the changes to the FLAC
stuttering, but I can confirm it 'happened to me too'.

Pat, your comments about cost of hardware, memory are well taken. I
lived in Beijing for two years and watched as migrant workers chipped
off the cement from the bricks. There, used bricks were more valuable
than labour. Makes you stop & think about global economics. (you see
the opening ceremony of the Olympics? Who in the west could afford
that?). But in this world of audiophiles and techie folks that maybe
layout 200$ for copper (ok, interconnects), you are right, its
relatively cheap to upgrade the equipment to run the application.

Not to say that 'bloatware' is not a concern, but I'm prepared to give
some latitude to the application I use on a daily basis.

Some interesting points in the original few posts about lack of and/or
need for clear/simple documentation. As an engineer myself, I have to
admit that 'reading the manual' is tantamount to an admission of
defeat. But I think I'm the exception, not the rule... I had a nice
experience recently doing a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate.
After installing SC & pointing it to my music folder lo and behold,
there was Transporter conncted wirelessly with no need to reenter any
WEP encryption or anything else. After scanning the music, it just
played as before on Xp. (Yes, I had a little issue with MaCafee, but
that was minor).

So, no installation issuesno Network issues, no wireless issues,
and yet, all too often we read here about one problem after another in
these areas. And this brings me to my dilemma here in Phuket.

A friend is looking at spending some serious money in setting up a
villa with wireless music. He doesn't know what he wants, but has lots
of money. Someone is pushing the Sonos system to him. Do I push
Transporter, Squeezbox and/or Duet?Well for a starter Sonos has an
agent here, Logitech has none as far as I know, so + 1 for Sonos.
Today I had a look at the Sonos web site & it has a certain kind of
'non-techy' appeal. Looks like it's just plug & play. I guess that's
+ 2 to Sonos. (even given my easy experience with Vista). I'm the kind
of guy that takes a perverse pleasure in the number of wires at the back
of my system and could rewire from scratch without any 'manual'. My
friend has every wire labelled not 'technically' but 'third plug from
left, second row down'. And he wants all his wires hidden. Sonos has
this kind of Bose, Ipod 'Mr Clean' feel to it somehow (even my wife
knows not to use the word doze in our house..). So, + 3 to Sonos.

I have to admit that my friend probably represents a bigger slice of
the market than techy folks like me. So he'll probably end up with a
Sonos system & never know what he is missing in terms of eg.
Transporter audophile qualities...

I will try to push the Logitech solution, but I think it will prove to
be an uphill battle..

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-15 Thread chinablues

A long thread & if its been said before, my apologies. Never mind the
MusicIP scanner & how long that takes (never been a problem for me),
the thing that bugs me is the SC scanner interface with Music IP when
I'm scanning new or changed music. Here SC scanner zips through the
music folders mostly correctly picking up changes and additions in
double quick time, but then it does a FULL scan of Music IP import.
THAT takes for ages. I'm scanning as I write this. Directory scan
finished in 25 secs, Music IP import, currently at 2450 of 20593 having
taken 4 mins 50 secs already!! Is there not a smart way for SC scanner
to suck in only the changes/adds on Music IP??

Yes I like MIP too...

I believe one of the Plugins from Erland Isaksson does this, but cannot
remember which. ( I had it loaded, but wiped my install to reinstall a
beta & haven't loaded the plugins I used to use). Erland has a website
which explains all. Check on Audio Plugins.

[slim] Squeezcenter Display with variable screen width & tabs

2008-05-14 Thread chinablues

I've been playing about with the general Squeezecenter display & until
we get the ability within SC to resize windows (left & right different
widths) in MS IE 7.0, I have come up with a set up that 'works for me'.
Sharing here in case of interest to others.

1. Open SC, but not in IE 'full screen mode'.
2. Pull window to right side of screen such that right hand (RH) lines
up with RH of monitor.
3. Pull LH of window to about 50% across the screen.
4. Refresh screen. This will split the window 50-50%. Run steps 3 &
4 until you get the RH 'now playing' window to a size to suit (all
fits)
5. Now pull LH side of window over to LH of monitor screen. Overall
screen will now readjust to about 75% to eg album art and 25% to the
'now playing' window.
6. As an option, paste http://127.0.0.1:9000/ (or whatever is your SC
site) into a new tab. Repeat 2 to 5 for this new tabbed window. I
guess you could open as many tabs as you like.

Using the above, I have one IE instance opened with two tabs. On first
tab I have album art displayed 10x wide (22" monitor). On second tab I
have artist listings. I can switch from one tab to another, explore &
add tracks from either to the 'now playing' window.

Note this is on SC 7.1.19631 (beta). I don't know if it works on
previous versions.

Re: [slim] 7.0.1 Official Release Date

I've generally downloaded all the updates & am on 7.1 19261. I've had
little problems with any of the updates. Ok there are sometimes
issues, but they tend to get fixed within a day or two. The lastest
update solves a lot of problems in scanning .for the first time I
get error free scans of all music, including artwork.

Didn't know the functionality was there in the Fishbone skin (which I
used prior to SC7). But I'd sure use it if it was there now for
exactly the reasons you mention.

Re: [slim] Dead Transporter

2008-03-27 Thread chinablues

Interesting, just happened to me too. After sending in a fault report to
support, I browsed here under 'dead transporter' (of course, I should
have done that first). I had the thing apart, checked voltages as I had
a power supply failure a couple of years ago. Never though the fix
would have been as simple!

I wonder if the glitch was something to do with the latest download
rather than a power supply spike? I think it happened to me running
7.0.1 - 17981.

Re: [slim] Playing music with no computer turned on

2007-04-03 Thread chinablues

What's the big deal about computers? Mine is on 24/7 & is only powered
down when I go on vacation. (this for remote possibility of fire risk).
It's in a separate room from the stereo, so sound is not an issue. Music
goes wirelessly through the walls. Long time ago PC mag ran a report on
computer reliability comparing power off at nighters, versus 24/7 ers.
There was no real difference in reliability. Typically electronics
suffers most on power up, thus leaving it running often results in
longer life compared with switching on/off all the time.

PS. I work in the process control industry. We have systems that have
been powered up for decades...power on is good!

Re: [slim] Transporter broken?

2007-04-03 Thread chinablues

My power supply failed about 6 weeks ago. Problem is I live in China &
there appears to be some restriction in shipping electronic goods back
from China to the USA. Beats me why this should be the case given that
most stuff you buy in the US is from China! Anyway, compromise is that
SD will ship a power supply board (which is relatively small & an easy
plug in replacement) to a colleage in the US & he will carry to China.
Unfortunately, according to SD they are/were out of PS units at the
present time. Seems to indicate that this is a weak part in the
system? Also, I wonder, browsing this thread whether the 220/240Volt
folk have statistically more of a failure rate than the 110V US folks?
There seems to be quite a few UK guys reporting failures here.

Echo the above point. I don't have an iPod but do have lots of MP3's.
Since getting the Transporter I have re-ripped all CD's to FLAC (about
7000 files or so). So I have MP3s and FLACs of the same CD. I also
have a lot of MP3s with no corresponding FLAC. If I could mix in same
library but have Slimserver automatically select the FLAC when there is
a choice, that would be great. Yes, I've tried Duplicate MP3 Finder &
that allows duplicate MP3s and FLACs to be found, but as Gary mentions,
gets you into the "faffing around" zone. A put-off for folks that don't
like 'faffing around' with databases etc..

The web interface is too geeky. Ok for me, but not for my wife (who
also likes music). Also my computer is in another room, so selecting
there when sound system is elsewhere is a pain. This should be an easy
fix/addon I would have thought & would improve the marketability no
end.

Maybe been mentioned before, but would be nice to have a headphone
version. ie minaturised battery powered SB3 embedded in a headphone.

"And, having just had my 6-month old 400GB backup disk die on me "

Wow, after all the work of ripping CD's to a hard disk, you trust the
hard disk? I've learned this lesson a few times. Either install a
Raid Array (mirrored hard drives), or maybe better, have a second drive
where you copy all the ripped files. This 2nd drive can be stored in
another location to insure against a common mode failure (power spike,
fire, physical computer theft for eg) which causes loss of both your
Raid drives. A 400GB drive can be bought for about 135$ I believe.
Cheap insurance.
