[slim] Re: Tons of Problems with 6.5

2006-11-28 Thread cmaskelyne

Unfortunately the only choice is to stick with the old version. I have
around 63000 files so tagging again is not an option and for the same
reason I think I would not have enough space for FLAC (and the thought
of re-ripping my music collection is not one I relish. Also MP3 still
provides the best flexibility and choice for players so not being
overly concerned about that extra bit of sound quality I will stick
with that.

I am still puzzled how Media Player, iTunes and Musicmatch and indeed
Slimdevices (version 6.0.1) are all OK but the new version does not
work. I take your point on the standards but lack of functionality
aside I did not see many complaints about 6.0.1 for tagging but there
are clearly issues now is it not possible to revert to the way the
tagging worked then rather than make changes. That aside I have been
happy with the squeezebox (I have v1 and v3) it just bugs me that I
cannot use the latest version of the software with some of the new
functionality that has been included without investing a very
significant amount of time on music that appears OK everywhere else.

[slim] Re: Tons of Problems with 6.5

2006-11-27 Thread cmaskelyne

I am running Windows 2003 server fully patched but without R2. I have
experienced some of the issues on this forum but primarily the ones
around the whole tagging problem.

I know that many people say you have to go through with a certain
tagging program and put them all onto a certain format v4 for example.
My comment would be this: It works fine on 6.0.1 (I must admit I am
still getting an issue with 6.3.1), it works fine on iTunes, Musicmatch
and Media player so why can we not get the tagging right on Slimserver?

I look forward to a posting saying all items have been fixed. That is
when I will upgrade until then I will do without some of the additional
functionality in return for all my tracks being tagged OK.

[slim] Re: to many directory tagging problem

2006-10-18 Thread cmaskelyne

Final post of the night.

6.3.1 has the same problem with the multiple directories. Half of my
albums disappear under "Web" with the artist being MP3's.

It must be something to do with the tagging not being picked up as the
other half are OK but can't for the life of me figure out what.

Anyway on the plus side 6.0.2 works fine. I did the following:

Stopped service, removed slimserver from the add/remove (control
panel). Deleted the directory C:\program files\slimserve.

Then did a full install of 6.0.2 set my directory up to scan:
H:\web\mp3's and bingo all present and correct.

As I mentioned before it is probably some rogue tagging that is in some
of my MP3's though I have been through with iTunes to remove everything
other than album, artist, track name, track number, genre and album art
so heavens knows which bit is the problem.

Also I converted all tracks to 2.4.

Finally I removed, gapless, album artist infomation, part of
compilation tags again using iTunes.

Now I can listen to my music again, when 6.5.1 works the same way as
6.0.2 I will upgrade, until then at least everything that I need is
working.

Would be glad to hear from anyone with other resolutions or the same
issue.

2006-10-18 Thread cmaskelyne

Right 6.5.1 nightly 18/10 does not fix this issue. Exactly the same
problem. Have tried it scanning the directory directly and using iTunes
- issue occurs on both.

Now having got it working fine under 6.0.1 (both scanning directly and
with iTunes) I am regressing back to 6.3.1 to see it the issue is there
as well.

More work needed I think. Will let you know when I have tried 6.3.1 if
this does not work the solution is to go back to 6.0.1 and do a clean
installation and then a clean update of all music.

Thanks for the update - I wonder if this is the same issue as I have
updated all mine to 2.4 tags. I am thinking there is something funny
going on where it does not pick up the tag but with the option set to

Anyway have downloaded the nightly and will let you know if the issue

[slim] to many directory tagging problem

2006-10-18 Thread cmaskelyne

There have been several issues reported with tags not being picked up
properly in the new version of slimserver.

With a fairly substantial library (43000 tracks) I was disappointed to
find that many of the tracks had disappeared to "Web" or "MP3's" which
were the subdirectories that I had assigned for my music.

Previously I know 6.3 was working so I reverted to that only to find
the same issue. Having worked my way through iTunes, Musicmatch and
Windows Media Player (all showing the correct tags) I decided to rever
to an even earlier version 6.0.1.

Despite removing all traces of slimserver the same problem occured.

In my desperation I remapped a H:\web\mp3's as Z:\MP3's (I tried) to
map it completely but you can't scan only a drive. Anyway so this meant
that I could see if the artists all changed from Web to MP3's however it
was even better than I expected - all tags were fine.

Next move is to move back through the upgrades and see if and when it
plays up. If you have this problem I suggest in the interim you move
the directory closer to the root or if this is not ideal share and map
the drive so you only have one sub-directory to your music. I will keep
you posted on whether this fixes the problem in later releases.

I guess if this does it probably needs to be fixed by someone but as a
casual user I am not sure how this works hopefully someone can pick
this up and see where the problem lies.

It has taken a couple of days but at last it seems like I am making
progress.

Still the best music steaming system out there even with these little
trials keep up the good work.

[slim] Re: Tons of Problems with 6.5

2006-10-16 Thread cmaskelyne

The saga continues.

I have now taken off all of 6.5.1 (or so I thought). Uninstalled from
Windows and deleted the directory (I assume just the one in Program
Files).

Put 6.3.1 back on and same problem half the albums are under MP3's or
Web (the two parent directories - H:\web\mp3's. Despite this all the
other programs seem able to pick up the tags. If I go into slimserver
the tag is showing 2.4 and the same is showing in iTunes so why are
they both not showing the same thing.

Has anyone got any suggestions where I can go from here? This is really
getting to be a pain as I have spend most of the day trying to fix this
problem.

Properly tagged in : musicmatch, winamp, windows media player, itunes
and 6.3.0 so in view of the fact many others have the same problem and
I would have to wade through 43000 tracks I will just go back to
something that works. I just want to listen to my music - which I could
with the last version. Whatever has changed needs changing back as it
seems I am not alone.

But thanks for the help you have provided. I really would have

I am afraid I have just downloaded 6.3.1 to reinstall. Having checked
the tagging issue with Musicmatch, Winamp, Windows Media and iTunes
(where they all show tagged correctly) and 6.3.1 I drew the conclusion
that 6.5 has introduced a bug that was not there.

I tried today to download, remove (from Windows uninstall) and delete
the directory and pluggins and reinstall - and the problem remained. If
you haven't yet upgrade all I can say is do so with care.

I to would prefer the stable release rather than being a tester. Does

6.3.0 did not have the problem (although I cannot tell when this

To cut a long story short I will go back to 6.3.0 but can anyone tell

I have a similar thread running at present where some of the albums have
disapeared - I have found mine under Web / MP3's which is where the
tracks are stored:

h:\web\mp3's\depeche mode (etc)

I think that it is taking the first two directories and using these
rather than starting at the right point. I assume as a large number of
my tracks do appear that it is only doing this where the tag is no
good.

[slim] Re: slimserver missing albums

2006-10-16 Thread cmaskelyne

After a rescan (unfortunately it is still going) it looks like it is
second guessing the tags incorrectly.

My directory structure is as follows:

H:\web\mp3's\depeche mode\personal jesus cd single\track 01

and so on

Where for some reason it is not picking up the tags it thinks the
artist is web and the cd is MP3's. The thing that puzzles me is that
Media player and iTunes are both tagged perfectly.

I am not sure which tag you are refering to but most of mine are tagged
Artist rather than Album artist in iTunes - not sure if that helps.

Would it help if converted the whole iTunes library to id tag 2.4?
which I think is the latest - or should I be picking an earlier one?

Thanks for the assistance so far.

[slim] slimserver missing albums

2006-10-16 Thread cmaskelyne

I have had slimserver running successfully on a 2003 server for some
time but recently things seem to be playing up.

Normally I scan the directory for music and this works fine. I noticed
in the last week or two though that a significant number of albums are
not listed under the artist. For example I have around 10 albums either
of, or with a track from "Air" on them. Only half of these are listed. I
have in the region of 20 "Depeche Mode" albums that have gone AWOL. The
strange thing is that there are approximately the right number of
tracks in Slimserver so I wonder if they are hiding elsewhere.

Also when I go into "Depeche Mode" under artist then the number of
track drops by about 50% to 21,000 in the listing at the top.

Finally I thought that maybe it would work if I linked to the .xml file
in iTunes. Despite all the albums being listed in the file I still have
exactly the same problem.

The tracks are ripped at different times but all in unprotected MP3
format. All tracks appear and can be played fine in iTunes and iTunes
and Slimserver both run on the same machine.

My thoughts are:

Is there a problem with Slimserver? - as neither is working I thought
that may be the issue.

Is there a problem with file protection? - would not have thought so
otherwise the tracks would not play in iTunes.

Have I got too much on here?

Should I revert to an early copy of Slimserver/iTunes (personally I do
not think the iTunes part will be a problem as an xml file is an xml
file and you cannot do much to stuff that up. Also a straight scan of
the folder causes the same issue.

If so can anyone direct me to a place where I can download say version
6 which I don't think caused me a problem.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

2006-04-09 Thread cmaskelyne

Couple of points no security in its own right will stop someone getting
access to your network but the more levels you put in place the more
likely a hacker is to use your next door neighbours unsecured network
rather than yours so I think hiding the SSID is still a valid measure
that you can take to help to keep your network safe.

On the wireless issue. I have just set up a belkin wireless router and
can report that this has enabled me to set up the WPA protection
without any issues. This leave me with my Netgear/Slimserver/SB3
combination being the problem. Not sure exactly which part but I still
suspect the Slimserver as there have been no other changes to the
system and it was working OK last week.

[slim] Re: Wireless / DHCP problem

2006-04-09 Thread cmaskelyne

Right, thanks for your thoughts here is where we are at.

Firstly I had tried some of the items mentioned and am an IT manager so
have a good knowledge of networking.

Here is what I have done and what the results are.

Removed all security on the router (MAC filtering, hide SSID and WPA).
Bingo all worked fine. Put MAC address filtering on and still no
problems. Hid the SSID still working. Then put the WPA on and it
stopped completely. I am having a similar problem to another posting at
the top of the forum list currently. So disabled the WPA and bingo
working again. So I decided on the WEP 64 still working. WEP 128 still
working. Back to WPA and no joy.

The network part is connecting but the slimserver will not start.

Now here is my deduction and you can let me know your thoughts. As the
WPA is working fine on my two other laptops and the SB3 appears to
connect but cannot link to the Slimserver (which I know is working
because my other SB1 is OK) the problem must be in some recent code
that has been either released as part of windows update or as a
slimserver upgrade must have caused the problem.

My next job (though not tonight) is to roll back any windows updates on
my W2003k server and then to reinstall an earlier version of slimserver.

The fact that there is an almost identical posting leads me to believe
one of the two items above is to blame. I must admit that I only use
the SB3 once a week or so which makes it difficult to say which day the
problem arose but it would be over the last 7-10 days I suspect.

One other thought is whether the 54g part of the card has failed in the
SB3 and I may be connecting at 11b but I will probably check this now.

[slim] Wireless / DHCP problem

2006-04-08 Thread cmaskelyne

I purchased a Squeezebox 3 just before Christmas and have been very
happy with it until this week.

As some background I also have a squeezebox that is connected to the my
slimserver via an Ethernet connection.

The problem I have is that my Squeezebox 3 which is using the wireless
connection cannot connect to the Slimserver.

My wireless is working fine as I have two laptops connecting without
issues. The settings for the wireless are all fine as the Squeezebox 3
appears to connect without problems.

The slim server appears to be working OK as my other Squeezebox
connects fine and works via Ethernet (as does the Squeezebox 3 when I
connect it this way).

This leads me to the conclusion that there is some kind of issue with
the wireless connection using slimserver.

It will go through and appears to connect however if I leave the IP
address to get one automatically from my DHCP server it will not get an
address in the right range. My two laptops are not having this problem.
I can do a release / renew without a problem. I should point out that
my DHCP server is on a W2003 Server which runs slimserver so the
Squeezebox 3 could connect to the wireless without necessarily getting
an IP address. Which I think is the problem. However it does get a
correct IP address if connected via Ethernet (so I don't thing the DHCP
service is a problem).

The mystery deeps when I fix a static IP address in the range. The
Squeezebox 3 appears to see the slim server address as you go through
the settings but once it tries to connect it cycles through two things
– “connecting to slimserver” and “connecting to wireless network”
before it comes up with the usual message that it cannot connect to
slimserver.

I am total confused with this and the only thought I had was that a
recent update to the slimserver software may be causing some conflict
(I have automatic downloads and updates turned on) and am running
6.2.1.

I have reinstalled the slimserver and tried setting everything up from
scratch again but to no avail – have you any thoughts on this.

My guess at this stage is that whilst the wireless network connection
is appearing to connect it is not doing actually doing so. This would
lead me to the conclusion that this could be a hardware fault. Could
anyone either confirm this or suggest any other options that I may need
look at before going down this route.

Thanks for any assistance anyone may be able to offer.

2005-04-19 Thread CMaskelyne
If you are planning to use this as a proper server and run services such as
file & print, internet hosting, etc you would probably be better with Linux
as this could handle it. Don't think you would get away with Windows 2003
mine sometime grinds to a halt and that is a P4 3.0Ghz with 1.5 Gb RAM. If
people are downloading from the server then it can affect the slimserver
stream. You may get away with more services running if you set up some QoS
or you could try W2000 Server which is not so memory hungry.
