Re: [slim] Boom Line In not working

2011-12-08 Thread david_f1976

If I set Line In as 'Always On' while connected to my local SB server
then I find that the line in always tends to work regardless of whether
I'm connected to a server or not. Any other setting and it's hit and
miss whether the line in will work while not connected to a server.

Probably worth trying if you haven't found a solution yet

It's certainly possible to get Napster working on Squeezeplay on the

works just as well on my Jogglers as on my Squeeze devices

On QNAP NAS devices SSOTS is used to get SbS up and running. To install
plugins you just have to create a folder named Plugins in the Public
directory of your QNAP and unzip the desired plugin (e.g. Other
 Players) there.
Afterwards you can use the import plugins function of SSOTS. Just one
 click and that's it!
Other Players appears in the Squeezebox menue and can be used as
 desired.

 Cool :)

Not 100% sure on your NAS, but basically go to your Squeezebox Server

Restart Squeezebox Server and it should appear

[slim] Multi-Zone Music with Airport Express and JRMC

2010-10-08 Thread david_f1976

This caught my eye.

Airport Express and the upcoming Airplay feature have the drawback of
not being able to play different music in different zones. According to
the article linked below it is possible on Windows using a combination
of J River Media Centre and Air UPnP.

Don't know how well the synchronisation works, but definitely a step up
from Airplay and having iTunes as a server and a step towards
Squeezebox/Sonos

Yes you need to keep it plugged in. If you're not using wireless it is
possible to take the joggler apart and insert the usb stick internally
where the wireless card currently is. There is a video on YouTube
somewhere (don't have the link handy) showing how easy it is to to do
this. Another alternative that some people are using is a micro SDHC

Question: Is third party plugins/applets important for your Squeezebox
purchases ?

- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless support for third
  party development is prioritized
- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless the third party
plugins I rely on is supported
- I use third party plugins but I would still consider buying more
  Squeezebox products without them
- I don't use third party plugins so they aren't important to my
  Squeezebox purchases

Like many others the 3rd party plugins have become near-vital to my
squeezeboxes. AlienBBC/BBC iPlayer allowed me to get rid of my tuner for
a start.

What differentiates the Squeezeboxes from Sonos is price, infrared
control and 3rd party plugins. I now have iPeng and have noticed the
Sonos street price lower than the Squeezebox Touch's RRP - that mainly
leaves 3rd party plugins as the differentiator. As I've not yet
completed my audio player purchasing, if the Sonos is as easy to use and
maintain as everybody says the loss of 3rd party support could trigger a
push to jump ship.

I was talking about the front end, that's why I said decode - analog

encoders should not be considered by anyone at any price for any reason.
For digital there's no encoding necessary as the cards are just
recording what they're receiving (clear-QAM, ATSC, DVB, etc..)

$500 is a ton of cash to spend on a front end, especially when you may
want 3 or 4 of them. The ION platform was promising this for under $200
and that's what all the Myth fans were raving about. Solutions using a
SoC offer sub $200 completely fanless ability today.

The free solutions (Myth) actually cost more than the commercial in
 many setups.

As long as your not fussed about live TV, it is possible to integrate
your MythTV backend server with the Sigma chip layers acting as
frontends via the likes of Samba, NFS and UPNP. You get the best of both
worlds then: the flexibility of MythTV, with cheap, low power and
reliable frontends.

The Hauppauge MVP is another option for a very cheap frontend for SDTV,
but a bit more challenging to set up and more limiting with video
formats.

There are various options, depending on where you are initiating the

Don't know if this'll still work from WHS. As you say, search is your
best option. But, why sync? There is an option to stop iTunes messing
with your music files, and let it just read the metadata.

Have you tried iTunes 9? I believe it can now monitor folders.

does the app that records the show, also serve the show out? via upnp?
dlna? other? what client or media adapter do you need on the other
end of the ethernet from the server?

i know some of you have got something going already, interested to hear
 what you think! :)

I currently have a MythTV setup but only for SD. I went with this
because of cost and flexibility (when I last checked Windows MCE can't
record and then share those recordings over a network in a user-friendly
way), but it is a hell of a learning curve (I pretty much knew no Linux
when I started). However, there is now Mythbuntu which combines MythTV
with Ubuntu and this is probably the easiest MythTV way of getting
started, but still be prepared for a lot of reading and frustration.

MythTV is split into two parts. The backend which acts as the PVR
controlling and hosting recordings. This doesn't have to be too
powerful. The frontend is for watching the recordings. However, I use
XBMC (using the MythTV protocol) or my Popcorn Hour over Samba to view
recordings (Although Myth has UPnP, it is too unreliable for MythTV for
me). On Linux, even for HD stuff, frontends don't need to be too
powerful these days because of VDPAU. Look out for Ion-based boards
(Atom processors with NVidia graphics).

That should be a starting point if you decide to go down the Linux
route

[slim] Word spacing on SB3 display on 7.2

2008-09-08 Thread david_f1976

I've just re-installed my system and in the process moved from SC7.1 to
7.2. On my SB3 display it appears that there is no spacing between
words, e.g. A Girl Called Eddy appears as AGirlCalledEddy. All is
fine in the web interface. I'm pretty sure that this wasn't occurring
previously. Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

We've seen various reports of such behaviour:

Could you please do the test as suggested by triode in one of the last
 comments?

When I click on the link, I'm taken to a bug page. I then click on the
url for the forum thread and I get a permission problem.

Is this the correct procedure or am I missing something?

Sorry, my brain isn't working well today.

Do you mean the bit about replacing the font file?

I don't have an old version of SC installed anywhere, so not sure where
I'd get the fonts from. And if I did, I'd probably need instructions to
do the replacement.

2008-09-08 Thread david_f1976

Just had a quick play and to my eyes the spacing seems ok on the small
font size, but not on medium or large.

For the record I am on Ubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit edition
SqueezeCenter Version: 7.2 - 22900 @ Tue Aug 26 10:45:08 PDT 2008 -
Debian - EN - utf8
SB3 firmware: 112

It looks like the discount is for Dell employees.

If someone using it was not a Dell employee, would that matter ?

I'm tempted to give it a go but I don't want to get stung when/if they
find out I'm not a Dell employee :-)

Has anybody else tried it ?

 Thanks

No problems so far here. Ordered mine over the weekend and just had an
email to confirm that the item has shipped.

Some people seem to be having problems with the voucher when trying to
order the squeezebox classic. Looks like you'd have to go for the duet
to get the discount.
