Thanks. However, I know how to record an analog device into a computer.
I have done it numerous times in the past. One of the easiest ways is
with the Windows XP Plus Analog Recorder. However, that is no longer
available since Vista has come out (see the Microsoft website). The
Microsoft website says all of this functionality is built into Vista.
Thus my question. How is this done in Vista. I don't see any tools
for this.

Thanks

Now after installing the 5/5/07 nightly build SlimServer does not start
up automatically at all any more even though it is set to do so. Also,
once I manually start it, then I also have to press the red button on
the remote to start the device as SlimServer says that it cannot find

Any chance this is all gonna be fixed sometime soon?

* What version of Vista are you running? (Home Premium, Ultimate, etc.)
Also specify if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.
Ultimate, 32-bit

* What version of Slimserver have you installed?
I have tried them all after 6.3.1. 6.3.1 is the only version that will
work. In fact, it works first time each time, no issues, not fiddle
F$*ing around

* What error messages are you getting? (if any)
No error messages. All versions other than 6.3.1 show Slim.exe
running, the interface says it is running, Services says it is running,
the systray icon says it is running, even Slim support agreed it was
running, the browser opens but is blank.

* What additional Security software are you using? (Firewalls,
Antivirus, etc.)
Besides Windows Vista Firewall, ETrust AV

* What happens if you try running Slim.exe manually from a DOS prompt?
(Cut and paste any errors.)
No errors. Same thing. It says Slim is running

Sounds like Vista comes configured with a fairly restrictive firewall
that even applies to itself. I haven't played with Vista yet but I
suspect you'll need to authorize port 9000 in the security settings.

I added an exception for Slim.exe in the Vista firewall. Now all I get

It is getting even more amazing to me that it appears that Slim folks
have not tested any of this on VISTA. I contacted support this even

think of based on having no VISTA machine to troubleshoot on said they
needed to consult others and would get back to me. This ought to be

[slim] Re: Squeezebox no longer startup automatically

2007-01-23 Thread fingers

I would agree... however that is exactly what happened. I have had no
problems with previous builds of 6.5.1 until now.

So, here is what follows. After contacting tech support by phone this
evening because I never heard back after filling out and submitting a
support issue via the website (by the way... they have no record of
that ticket). Tech Support was unable to get me up and running. I
sent them a file to check out.

In the mean time... it has now been 2 days without music so I have done
the following:
1. Add Remove Programs: removed SlimServer. Deleted SlimServer
folder under Program Files. Rebooted. Downloaded and installed the
released version of 6.5.1. Installed. SlimServer would only flahs and
never come up. Services said that SlimServer was not started. Started
within Services however even though Services said SlimServer started,
it never did and when going back into Services it indeed was not
started.
2. Tried the above 2 more times. Same thing
3. Tried the above again however, this time I downloaded and installed
6.3.1. SlimServer starts up first time everytime on the computer but...
the 3 Squeeseboxes have no clue what's going on and show blank
4. Start with one Squeesebox. Do a Factory reset. However, it is
apparent that even though the Squeezebox says that a Factory Reset
happened it does not (the Factory reset settings do not automatically
advance to the next character when entering the WPA encyrption).
Walked through the network setup. Upon restarting the Squeezebox want
a Firmware upgrade. I do the Firmware upgrade and after have to walk
through the network setup a second time (re-entering the WPA
encyprtion). Upon restarting the Squeezebox cannot find the
SlimServer. Perform the whole taks of Factory reset 3 more times to
success (4 times total).
5. Repeat the exact same procedure for the other 3 Squeezeboxes on my
network only they only required 3 Factory resets instead of 4.

All is now well. SlimServer 6.3.1 is up and running!!

Is is really ashame that someone has to go through this process each
and every time they attempt an upgrade. This is not the first for me.
The same thing has happened numerous times here at home with my 3
Squeezeboxes and also numerous times at the office with my 2
Squeezeboxes there.

Be Aware!

SlimServer starts, but shows YOUR PLAYER WAS NOT FOUND. To fix this I
need to press the POWER button a couple trys on the remote. Then I
need to go around the house to the other Squeezeboxes and do the same
to them. They I need to re-launch SlimServer. Any suggestions?

PS... SlimServer also does not remember that the other Slimdevices are

2007-01-22 Thread fingers

kdf;173166 Wrote:
Since you don't like reading the bug report, I can offer a summary.
Some players are having a problem reconnecting to the server after
detecting a loss of connection to the server. A few people have
offered packet traces that show some questionable activity, but nothing

yet difinitive. the firmware engineer responsible for SB stuff has
asked for more details, but is not yet able to reproduce in order to
 debug it himself.

the current workaround is as you have already noticed, press power a
few times to force the player to reconnect. Unplugging and plugging
back in also helps. Where possible, avoid restarting the server so
that you don't have the reconnect issue.

Speaking for myself, I have not run into this issue. As a contributor,

I restart often and sometimes leave the server off for a long time
before another start. All players reconnect fine, aside from one SB1
which sometimes doesn't realise the bridge from the SB2 it's wired to
 is back online.

While Jim is being rather short about it, he is right. The choice is
up to you. If you can accept that you are in an unfortunate minority
and live with the extra power button pressing until it's fixed, you'll

get to enjoy the SB when it works, and when it's fixed. If you believe

that people like me are lying, others saying nothing, and the product
itself is utterly useless for all and will never be fixed, then you
might want to consider looking elsewhere. As a so-called insider i

know just how much of a priority it is to avoid server crashes, and a
lot of what is going into 7.0 is to avoid crashes even at the cost of
the occasional unstable feature. At the very least, this will mean
that you can restart less. As for firmware fixes, there is someone on

it, but there are sometimes things in private life that matter
more...so you will need to have some patience on this matter.

sorry for the aggravation that you are suffering. I offer only what I

 know.

 -kdf

As I am sure are you are as most of us... I am interested in playing
music. It is always humerous when both people that post here and those
on product support via email say...OH WELL!

The point is... that this is truly not consistent. I just now after
installing the released version (not the nightly updates) of 6.5.1 does
not work as well installed 6.3.1. It is now also showing that it is not
going to work as well. What this means as has been typical in the past
over a year of dealing with SlimServer is that I am going to have to
purge any instance of SlimServer from my machine, re-install again,
re-setup the WPA encryption.

Non of this should ever have to happen!

for current releases, you'll have to resort to editing a file.

Look for the file, HTML/EN/cmdwrappers under the slimserver install

open it with any text editor (notepad, vi, etc)
Look for the [% BLOCK galleryitem %], around line 150
Near the end of that section, around line 180 you can remove the line:

 [%- content | indent(4) %]

with that gone, the text under the image will no longer be there.

installing any newer version of slismerver will require redoing this

would access the wireless network. I then reset both Squeezeboxes back
to factury settings and set each one up again... presto! Finally have
my music back.

Typically, when the computer that slimserver is installed on is shut
down, the Squeezebox goes blank. There is nothing displayed on the the
screen. Once Slimserver is turned back on, the Squeezebox display
lights up. However, now even with the Slimserver computer shut down,
the Squeezebox stays on trying to connect to the wireless network.

[slim] Re: .WMA files not playing correctly

2006-08-21 Thread fingers
, then this could leave the SlimServer DB in a mess. (I had
this happen because SS assumed that a particular WMA tag was unique for
each file, and one of my WMA providers was breaking this. But that was
fixed before 6.2.2.) One easy-to-spot symptom of this is if the web
interface reports far fewer artists, albums or tracks than you expect
(at the top of the Browse Artist page, for example).

 -- Brian

Under Server Settings / File Types, and check that Windows Media -
Windows Media - (built-in) is checked.

No, there is no ARTWORK folder. No, not all the files appear in
Artwork / No Album.

Sometimes the files change size after the rescan. Sometimes some of
the tag information is missing after the rescan. By the way... is
there a better wan to edit .wma tags other than Windows Media Player?

I have tried both restoring only the corrupted files and also all the
files of a particular album. I have tried both copying over the
exisiting files and removing the existing files prior to copying the
backup files to SS.

I copy both .wma and mp3 files. This problem is only with .wma files.
When replacing corrupted .wma files on the SS machine, I copy over my
LAN from the computer sitting next to the SS computer to it.

At this moment I am listening through SS some files that I just copyied
back to the SS machine from the backup machine because after my most
recent scan some of these album files (.wma) became corrupted. I have
not rescanned since copying the files to SS and they are playing just
fine.

SS doesn't say anything about the files, it just skips over them if
corrupted. It may play a bit of each but just skips over. Windows
Media Player on the other hand does indeed state that WMP cannot play
the file because it is corrupted.

I looked at the bug today and it appears to be closed. Did this get
fixed?

I did a couple tests this morning. I ran a rescan of the libary (Clear
Libary and rescan everything). Once finished I again had a new folder
under ARTWORK that says NO ALBUM. Inside were a number of .wma files
that were corrupted. I copied my backup non corrupted files from
another computer back to the Slim Server computer. Played the replaced
files. All played just fine. Re-ran the same scan(Clear Libary and
rescan everything. This time there were different files listed under
NO ALUBM in the Browse ARTWORK view that were corrupted. I copied
backup copies of these files back to the SlimServer computer, played
the files just fine. Re-ran the same scan again and now different
files are corrupted.

This is only happening with .wma files. Clearing run the SlimServer
scan affects these files.

Wow! I will have to really sit down and read through this whole thing
before I can reply to all.

However, yes, I copy the uncorrupted files back to the machine with
SlimServer. I can play the uncorrupted files just fine in Windows
Media Player and also in SlimServer when I first copy them over.
However, once I run the full scan as I mentioned, random files become
corrupted. SlimServer cannot play them and skips them and when I try
to play them in Windows Media Player it says it cannot play them
because they are corrupted.

Yes, the corruption is random... not the same files each time.

read off the 3 numbers for physical memory.

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-16 Thread fingers

Michaelwagner Wrote:
 Sigh ...

Almost everything you told us, in flamebait and now more calmly, is
 already known.

You could have found this out yourself with a little light reading.

Slimserver is written in perl. Whether you are a perl fan or not,
that's the language it's written in. Warts and all.

perl did not acquire threads until recently, and not all
implementations for all machines work equally well, so the developers
have stayed away from multi-threading until very recently. The entire
slimserver has it's own internal dispatcher so that it can service
music requests and display requests and handle remote control button
presses while scanning and dishing out web pages at the web interface.

[edit] the two threads you see in windows - one is a perl windows
implementation thread that does almost nothing - I think it waits for
sigint or something. It is not a perl second thread. Slimserver is at
the moment single threaded. In 6.5 they're getting their toe in the
water with a second thread. We'll see how that goes.

It is true that (some) file systems have a way of notifying you about
file updates, but the notification method is not uniform across file
systems. Moreover, Slimserver has to work (and does, to a remarkable
extent, it does succeed) across multiple systems and across networks.
So the file store may be on a linux box, but slimserver may be running
on windows. Or vice versa. The problem is complex in it's generality
and not, as I understand it, handled at all well by perl. So the
application would have to get down and dirty in system details, not a
 pleasant task.

There is code in slimserver, going back to the early days of release 6,
to catch and detect most common scanning loops. These loops are more
subtle than you might think, because some music file formats spread
themselves across multiple files. For instance, one file format records
the entire album as a monolith and then generates a second file called a
cue sheet. The idea is to prevent gaps between tracks if you don't want
them. But the 2 file format wasn't as well thought out as it might have
been (by the designers of the format, not Slim) and it is possible to
 have various out-of-sync problems.

But, basically, what you described as happening shouldn't.

Which is why we asked to see your logs, to try to get to the bottom of
what's happened, to improve the product so it won't happen again.

 You wrote:

 No it doesn't.

If it's consuming 99% of the cpu, for long enough for you to casually
notice, it's not running properly at all.

I run slimserver 24/7 and have done so for about a year now. It runs on
my main computer that also runs AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop (when you
look up pig in the dictionary, that's what you find). Slim may use the
CPU for 10 seconds at a time, in response to a query, but that's it.

And when scanning, once in a blue moon, it is rather more busy for 15
minutes to half an hour or so, but even then you have plenty of
computer left over, at least I do on my 1.8GHz machine.

So *if* that's not your experience, and *if* you actually want to get
to the bottom of it rather than complaining and
*shouting-but-not-for-help in a very loud voice*, turn on the debugging
options and show us what your log shows.

 Or not.

 Your choice.

actually yes it does! I run SlimServer on multiple machines. All
the machines are a minimum of 2.8GHz up to 3.06GHz. All my machines
have 1GB of RAM and large hard drives with more than enough space
remaining on each drive. Everyone of my machines not only pegs the CPU
when scanning. But also comes close just during normal operation, even
when Slim.exe is idle. All of my machines are running the latest
version of Windows XP Pro with all the latest patches. All machines are
running SlimServer 6.3.0 - 8148

Here's some other interesting information. When I first copy the .wma
files to the Music Folder, browse through SlimServer to the Music
Folder, find the particular album and play, all plays well. However,
when I then tell SlimServer to find new music, including trying to
clear all and find new, it appears that process corrupts the .wma
files. Not all, but a few in each folder. I can copy the .wma files
back from my backup share, play them again through SlimServer prior to
telling SlimServer to find new music. Same thing happens once I do,
some of the .wma files in each folder containing them become corrupted.
However, not the same ones each time.

[slim] .WMA files not playing correctly

2006-07-23 Thread fingers

I decided to try ripping a number of CD to .wma instead of .mp3. I used
Windows Media Player to rip the CDs. The thing that is strange is that
if I play the .wma files in Windows Media Player they all play just
fine. However, when playing them with SlimServer they don't. All the
tracks for each album are listed, when I start to play the album it
typically plays part of the first track and then skips to another track
and play part of it and then skips to another or stops playing the album
all together as it has now reached the end. This is happening with
every album that contains .wma files but does not happen to any of the
albums that contain .mp3 files.

Any clues?

That is a warning and will not cause SlimServer to stop. Do you have
 the actual crash message?

This message is what I get when attempting to run from command prompt:

2006-07-14 10:45:26.4209 AysncHTTP: No DNS servers responded, you may
have trouble with network connections. Please check your network
settings.

SlimServer does not open.

This is what is listed in the Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7034
Date: 7/14/2006
Time: 10:45:17 AM

From the command line, and you get no other messages? It just stops?

BTW, you do have a DNS problem that you should solve. Try running
slim.exe --d_http_async to see which server(s) it is trying to contact.

Yes. That is correct. It just stops.

I ran --d_http_async and it found no DNS servers. I am guessing it is
because I am running this on my work network. However, the Squeezebox
and the computer hosting SlimServer are on the same hub which should
not cause any problems.

Hi Andy

If you are asking if under ipconfig /all there is:

Primary DNS Suffix

The answer is YES

[slim] Re: A couple questions

2006-07-13 Thread fingers

Unfortunetly, things are back the same again today. SlimServer
constantly shutting down.

I have attempted to start it via command prompt: c:\program
files\slimserver\server\slim.exe --noupnp. But that does not start
SlimServer. It brings up a list of options of which --noupnp is not
one of them.

upnp is enabled in the router.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing SlimServer to shut
down randomly?

thanks
