Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?
My long term solution is relying for as long as I can on my current setup (1 SB3, 3 Boom, 1 SB2) and the spares I have in storage (1 Boom and 1 SB2). If/when I'll run out of spares, I think Raspberry Pi should suffice. I'm currently at a point in my life where I think my SqueezeServer might end up outliving me, to be honest. And that's fine. Re: [slim] Strange problem with SB Classic
Yup, found out as much. Came here to report back. Basically the AC adapter wasn't keeping the device on correctly. It's strange because I measured it later with a voltmeter and it outputs rock solid 5.12 Volts... but I haven't checked amperage, maybe that's where the problem lies. Luckily I had a brand new AC adapter from a spare SB 2 that I'm keeping in my stash and with that it works a charm. Now I'll try to score a couple of extra AC adapters, since they seem to be one of the weakest links in the chain. [slim] Strange problem with SB Classic
I have, among the other SB devices around my apartment, a SB Classic. It's connected with analog to a pair of self powered speakers. Today I tried turning it on from the web interface and play some music. Nothing came out. I started investigating. Basically what I have is the player seems to be working. It's seen by the server, it's seen by the router (it gets connectivity through WiFi and gets assigned an IP). If I sync player with it and start playing from it, the other players play music. But the screen stays off and no sound comes out of it. I think I tried correctly the Xiling thing but the screen didn't turn on at all. Optical connection shows the usual faint red light. gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103764 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wrong transcoding settings to MP3 in default install?
I've actually found out why the mistake happened. It didn't happen. Back then. When it was decided to move to this configuration for transcoding, the -v switch simply indicated to use VBR encoding. In later versions of LAME this changed and it became a substitute for -V 4. Old LAME (3.89) relevant help section: Code: VBR options: -v use variable bitrate (VBR) (--vbr-mtrh) --vbr-old use old variable bitrate (VBR) routine --vbr-new use new variable bitrate (VBR) routine --vbr-mtrh a merger of old and new (VBR) routine -V nquality setting for VBR. default n=4 0=high quality, bigger files. 9=smaller files -b specify minimum allowed bitrate, default 32 kbps -B specify maximum allowed bitrate, default 320 kbps New LAME (3.99.5) relevant help section: Code: VBR options: -V nquality setting for VBR. default n=4 0=high quality, bigger files. 9=smaller files -v the same as -V 4 --vbr-old use old variable bitrate (VBR) routine --vbr-new use new variable bitrate (VBR) routine (default) -Y lets LAME ignore noise in sfb21, like in CBR -b specify minimum allowed bitrate, default 32 kbps -B specify maximum allowed bitrate, default 320 kbps The sad thing is that Squeezeboxes display the transcoding bitrate that the server communicates, based on server settings, and not the actual bitrate of the file being played back. Hence the problem in discovering this (and why I used foobar2000 streaming to check). gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94642 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wrong transcoding settings to MP3 in default install?
In any case, one thing to give thought to would be to use Ogg Vorbis to handle transcoding. Vorbis is natively gapless and sounds better than LAME at low bitrates (at least according to general knowledge at Hydrogenaudio). Too bad that it's pretty impossible to handle transcoding to a different format than MP3 when it needs to be triggered by bitrate limiting. gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94642 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wrong transcoding settings to MP3 in default install?
If Cpu power and strict bitrate are not critical, one could also do: Code: flc mp3 * * # FB:{BITRATE=--abr %B}T:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=--resample %D} [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [lame] --silent -V $QUALITY$ $RESAMPLE$ - - Bitrate limiting is not used for encoding (just, I suppose, for triggering the transcode) and one can use the Quality setting to choose among the different VBR presets, that are definitely the most optimized toward quality. The default quality setting for Lame is 5, for the -q switch. I guess one could hardcode the desired one, taking into account his CPU (it's not something that needs to change from player to player). Would the above work? gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94642 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Wrong transcoding settings to MP3 in default install?
Unless I'm mistaken, there is a problem with the standard settings that LMS used to transcode when streaming to a bitrate limited player. This is the string that's used, for instance, to transcode from FLAC: [lame] --silent -q $QUALITY$ $RESAMPLE$ -v $BITRATE$ Now, the quality setting is the one we set under each player settings (0 to 9, 9 being the default that uses a fast psychoacoustic model, good for high bitrates). The problem comes with the -v switch that is used. That is equivalent to use -V 4, which yelds a bitrate of about 165kbps (it varies, considering the -v settings are VBR). This makes completely worthless the $BITRATE thing, considering it translates to {BITRATE=-B %B}. So, supposing I set a player to Quality 9 (the default that the interface tells us sounds very good at high bitrates) and limit it to 320kbps... what do I get? In case of a FLAC to be transcoded I think that the normal expectation would be to expect a 320kbps MP3 to be streamed. But if I'm not mistaken, that's not the case. Because the transcoding line would read like this: lame.exe --silent -q 9 -v -B 320 This encoded a V4 variable bit rate MP3, which has an upper bitrate limit of 320kbps. But V4 is never going to hit that limit, sitting conveniently in its usual 165kbps range. So even though LMS is telling the player that it's sending it a 320kbps MP3, I really don't see how that could be the case. Wanting to keep the same approach (otherwise I think the changes needed would be more far reaching), the correct line to use in convert.conf should be: [lame] --silent -q $QUALITY$ $RESAMPLE$ -V 0 $BITRATE$ This would use the V0 preset that has a target bitrate of 245kbps (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME#VBR_.28variable_bitrate.29_settings), with bitrate peaks at 260kbps. Considering that the current settings go from 256 to 320, it would still make sense to keep them as they are. 256 would strictly enforce the 256kbps limit, while 320 would let the V0 preset more space to "breathe". I don't think that, given the currently available variables we could have a real 320kbps CBR setting, as that would require the use of the -b 320 switch, that's not compatible with the rest of the bitrates. All this, as I mentioned at the beginning, unless I'm mistaken and mp3 transcoding happens in a whole different way. gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94642 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the answer, I was thinking about using this OyremoteCL: http://www.krautsourced.com/?page_id=88 Which is a command line program to send commands through the network to an Onkyo receiver (many models supported, in case anyone is interested). Re: [slim] anything new from CES
Some thoughts and questions: 1) LMS works perfectly on Windows 7 x64. It's quite likely it will work no problem on Windows 8 as well. Considering Microsoft support strategies, this gives us at least a 10 year window with a supported OS in Windows environment. Linux will work forever quite probably... 2) How hard would it be for somebody to develop a slimclient a la Squeezebox 2/3? And make it compatible with LMS? Is there anything closed source that would stop that from happening? 3) LMS does already pretty much anything you might want to from a similar solution. Actually, it already does more than what it should (IMHO), considering the UPNP pictures and movies is completely optional and mostly useless. 4) If I could I would buy, right now, 10 Squeezebox 2/3 and stash them away for the rest of my life. They do what I want from a music solution. -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92973 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I meant replay gain in the player. A proper "cloud" squeezebox app for iPhone, capable of caching songs (thus slowly building a library of cached songs up to a limit set by the user), capable of doing everything a Squeezebox 2 is capable of: crossfade, smart crossfade, replaygain, smart replaygain... Already have an SB2 and an SB3. The server is always on during the day, turns itself off (S3 standby) at 3.00 AM and back on at 8.15 AM. At switch off the server sends the bedroom SB3 to SqueezeNetwork to keep the clock going (at wife request). Now I'd like to place the Boom in the bedroom but I have no intention (yet) to mess with the 7.4 can of worms. If I don't send it to Squeezenetwork I won't have problems with firmware updates ever, right? Is Boom capable of keeping the clock screensaver on even when the server goes down? -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70273 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.
Would it be possible to have a single button on the remote to activate and disactivate synch groups? Having to go to settings/synch/etc. it's *really* annoying. When you have several SBs in your home, that's a function that you surely want to activate quickly. -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67769 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is 7.4 of any use for SB2/SB3 users?
I'm wondering if Logitech has effectively EOLed pre-Duet stuff. There was still stuff being asked that involved SB2 and SB3... is there an official stance on this? I've even received a notice of a bug on SB2 and SB3 being closed because it was fixed on the Boom... -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69118 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Is 7.4 of any use for SB2/SB3 users?
Honestly at this point I would like a simple answer to a single question: in a SB2/SB3 environment, what are the advantages of switching to 7.4? If any, that is. -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69118 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Synching SB1 with SB2/SB3. Limits?
Server is a powerful machine, quad core. Windows XP. SC 7.3.3 I'm wondering, if I were to try and hook up my old SB1 to add an extra music zone, what limits would I have when synching them all together? Lack of replaygain I seem to remember.
