Hi Stefan: Thank you for fixing the problem with the contextual menus. One minor issue seems to remain: the 'replay' and 'shuffle' contextual menus used to be 3-line tall. Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
Recently switched from an old iPad to a new iPad Air. Noticed one strange behavior. In my old iPad, a light tap on a track brought up a 3-item pop-up, one of which items was play. Tapping on that then played the whole album/playlist starting from that track. On my new iPad, tapping on a track does not activate the pop-up, but starts playing immediately. Is there a setting anywhere to go back to the behavior of my old iPad? TIA. In other words, on the Pi, is SqueezePlug a prerequisite to install and run SqueezeLite? 2) VAMP sounds really promising, except that the last detailed building and installation instructions from the creator presupposed the VAMP would be connected to the router via Ethernet, which is a non-starter in my setup. Later on in that thread, he claims to have wi-fi working, but gives no further details, and has been relatively silent since then. Is there a thread or website I'm missing that gives directions on how to install a VAMP so that it connects over wi-fi rather than being hard-cabled? FWIW, I wouldn't need an internal DAC, since I'd be using the one in my receiver. (It would be pointless to use a better DAC, since the receiver would first re-digitize the incoming signal for DSP purposes, so it's just as well to provide a digital input stream. Accordingly, since I don't see any of these projects having an S/PDIF output, I assume I'd be using a USB-to-S/PDIF adapter of some sort. Would there be any possible pitfalls to such an approach? Once again, thanks! Community Squeeze is intended to support WiFi as well as SPDIF (coax and Toslink). On the back I'll also put a small RGB led connected to 3 pwm outputs of the processor, that way the color and intensity is fully under software control. The control for these is available under sysfs so any program including an applet under jivelite can control it. By default the led will be off, it will only go on when some software does something to it. This will let anybody who wants to play with it do so to their hearts content. During phase one we can play with it and find out if there is any use for it and determine if it needs to be on Gen2. The Ethernet jack has the fairly standard gigabit two leds, one of which is dual color. The brightness is going to be the same as on the wandboard. (I'm just using the wandboard schematic for this) So any of you that already have a wandboard can look at the Ethernet leds and see if the brightness is what you want. If feedback gets in in time I can change the leds for Gen1. John S. Sounds like an excellent plan to me. John, congratulations on the launch of SWAMP0.5! On the matter of balanced outputs, it would seem reasonable to think of them as an extra cost 'optional' add-on. If the SWAMP1.0 internal DAC is that good, those of us with balanced setups can probably afford to pay the extra fare and retire our external DAC. JohnSwenson wrote: The DAC chip I'm going to be using on these boards is a brand new one, I have not used it before, so I can't be completely sure, but my gut feeling on this is that it is going to be way better than what was in the Touch. A big advantage of thisone is that it has a direct output, no need for any other output stage, between the DAC chip and the output jack is one resistor per channel, that's it. This does a lot towards keeping the cost down. I have a $1200 DAC at home from a company known for very good sound at reasonable cost, this new output is probably going to sound significantly better. That is the level I am aiming at and I think it's quite acahievable at a very low cost. Part of getting this quality is the programable DSP in the DAC chip, by putting the proper filter in here you can get vastly better results than other systems. I have proved this with other systems, that fairly ho hum DAC chips and analog out stages with the right digital filter can sound vastly better than very high end stuff with garden variety filter used in almost all the DAC chips. And this implementation is NOT going to be a ho hum implementation. I'm using very low jitter clocks, very low noise voltage regulators, and unusual ground plane techniques to keep the digital noise out of the analog domain. The final result when it is all tweaked up should be pretty spectacular. This is what has me excited, the ability to do all this stuff and integrate it into the system so it doesn't cost a fortune. I just did a quick and dirty cost estimate this morning, and with a single core wandboard module, the wifi module I've talked about AND the audiophile DAC and S/PDIF out we are looking at right around $200 for the complete board cost, the only thing not included in that price is the case, antenna and power supply. A dual core module will cost a little more. The Gen0.5 boards will have a quick and dirty implementation of this functionality, not nearly as good as Gen1, but enough so we can hopefully get the software to talk to the DSP in the DAC chip so I can start working on the filter design. So Triode and Jack, don't expect wonders out of the Gen0.5 board, it should sound pretty good (I expect significantly better than a Touch) but nowhere near what it will be when all said and done. John S. Wow, John. This IS exciting indeed! I'm sure there are many in the community that are as excited and are eager for you and friends to succeed in this endeavor. I think it would help aiming one's finger, which for right handed persons hides the icon as one tries to hit some undefined area to the left of it. Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
Love Squeezepad's elegant design and simplicity! On my iPad though, the volume slider in the main screen is very difficult to set precisely. It works better in the larger artwork screen, possibly because it's longer. Even though I mostly control volume on my preamp, I would very much like to see a longer slider in the main screen so that I could more easily make minor volume adjustments (near the 100 mark) with greater precision. I guess this should help you settings the right volume! Thank you. I was not aware that the volume icons are actually active. However, while the + (right side) works well, the - (left side) is hit or miss. It seems as though it needs a larger target area to work as well as the +. (Both icons work well in the larger artwork screen). I also think that I hear a *-very small-* improvement in favor of 24/96, but would find it very difficult, probably impossible, to reliably distinguish it from the CD version in a blind comparison. Of course, one cannot generalize from a sample of two, but this suggests to me that the sonic benefits of 24/96 recording may be, at best, secondary to the quality of the entire recording set-up (mic positioning and quality, cables, electronics, venue, etc.). Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
The recent update of squeezepad provides a most welcome change that makes it much easier to tap the left hand side letters without inadvertently launching a track. BUT, embedded art is now privileged over cover.jpg files! This is not an improvement for those who have painstakingly inserted high-quality artwork and now have to de-embed all art manually if they want to see the higher resolution (larger), higher quality art. Please at least provide an option for defeating this most unwelcome feature which actually works against the squeezepad's ability to show album art almost at full scale. Thanks. There are great tools that can remove all embedded art automatically at once (Bliss being one of them - I wrote a blog about it some time ago: http://www.squeezepad.com/2010/10/how-to-upgrade-coverart-to-a-higher-resolution/ ). I just found another thread which talks about different programs (mp3tag and tagrename) to handle the embedded art: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/284477/batch-tagging-album-art-using-cover-jpg Sorry for the inconvenience caused.. I'm a bit reluctant to use programs such as bliss, which sometimes produce unexpected effects. Dbpoweramp does remove all embedded artwork automatically if and when I open up each folder to check its art status. I'm sure you are right that in the long run one is better off by removing all embedded art (except for those folks with compilations perhaps). But I still think your excellent app would be even more so if it gave the user the option to choose which art is privileged. I hope you will get input from others to that effect. Why not embed the larger art in the files ? too This design make images consistent in SqueezePad vs squeexeboxserver and squeezeplay . If SBServer privileges embedded artwork, then by all means Squeezepad should do the same by default. However, well-designed software should accommodate the user's preferences, not the other way around. In this case, it should allow the user the option of prioritizing cover.jpg files rather than embedded art. I hope the developer of this otherwise fine app will provide that option in the near future.
