[slim] Mysqld.exe runs without SqueezeBox Server

2009-10-09 Thread juniper

I have been checking my running processes using LookinmyPc Inspector
trying to sort a PC problem and noticed an instance of Mysqld.exe (13
threads and 8788 kb) . The only product that uses Mysqld.exe on this PC
is the Squeezebox Server, yet this is not loaded as a startup program
and it was not running when I found mysqld.exe running. This may not be
a problem or even related to my problem (my PC periodically freezes) but
it seems curious. Can anyone advise please?

... but I take Jim's point. It then makes no sense to switch it off
when Squeezebox Server is switched off. Is this a little bug?

Re: [slim] Can we avoid inflamatory titles?

2008-02-14 Thread juniper

I like this forum very much. I have received lots of helpful patient
advice and sometimes when I have felt brave enough contributed some
ideas, help myself. I have no personal experience of being flamed,
trolled, nor have I seen any instance of it. That maybe is because the
threads I follow do not attract that type of abuse.

I am however worried with the idea of moderation because of the risk
that it it could be perceived as a form of control by the
authorities in this case Logitech.

It appears to be a bit sledgehammer to crack a nut, and lock down a
really useful thread, which may have been running for some time. Surely
it is better to remove an offensive post, if more than n members have
complained, as an alternative to a moderator locking down a thread
which they perceive to be going inflammatory.

Other alternative approaches to the problem have also been proposed in
this thread. Is there any way that we the members / peers could vote on
what we feel to be the most appropriate way of dealing with the problem.
We are all grown ups and members of this SB community.

Re: [slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-16 Thread juniper

The more I follow the thread and also read comments in the Beta forum,
the less I feel inclined to make the jump to Release 7.0 until it
becomes official. There still seem to be too many unresolved BETA
issues, that may be fun for techies to comment on and try to resolve
but could be a nightmare for the less technically inclined.

Re: [slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-16 Thread juniper

Jim - I would like to take it asap. I then looked at the Beta forum and
there seem to be problems with the most recent builds. I am happy to
experiment and am not nervous of a certain degree of risk, but the
comments seem to indicate more fundamental problems.

[slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-15 Thread juniper

I read in this forum at the start of Dec that. the target date for an
official 7.0 release was to be 5th Jan. That has come and gone.

a)Is anybody able to explain in a nutshell the selling points of 7.0
over 6.5.4 please?
b) When is the formal release now likely to be available to ordinary
non techie users like my goodself?
c) If still some time off - is there any point in downloading 7.0 beta
- following on from a) and b).

Thanks in anticipation

Re: [slim] Musicovery.com can it work on the Squeezebox?

2007-10-09 Thread juniper

I have now listened to Musicovery using the Wavein plugin release 1.02,
and it works. However despite my earlier expressions of joy on
discovering Musicovery, I do now have some concerns particularly that
their free Lo-Fi (32 kbs) option sounds pretty miserable on my SB via
the soundcard, and I would not yet be prepared to pay a monthly
subscription to their Hi-Fi (128 kbs). Mainly because although I am
intrigued by the Musicovery approach (see www.musicovery.com) I am not
sure that I would want to pay regular money to experience it at an
acceptable level of quality, and I think that their range is narrower,
shallower and often repetitive (same title different artists in same
selection / multiple titles same artist (and often not that worthy of
selection) in same selection.

Thanks Haunyack, but both services are only available in the US. Its
back to Last.fm for me, at least until the geographic listening
rights can be sorted out, maybe I will try again then.

[slim] Musicovery.com can it work on the Squeezebox?

2007-05-08 Thread juniper

Now that Pandora is technically unavailable for non US listeners, tho of
course Last.fm is still with us - praise be. Slimmers may be
interested in trying out www.musicovery.com. It enables the user to
access streams based on mood, genre and epoch - and it is quite neat. I
hasten to add I have no vested interest. My question is as non tech
expert, how on earth can one listen to it via the Squeezebox.

I will think about it myself, but would be interested if anyone else
would like to check it out and post their ideas.

Cheers

Re: [slim] PC + SB3 + Wireless Speakers - possible?

2007-02-03 Thread juniper

These two questions are probably so basic that I apologise. but if you
dont ask you will never know

My 1 x SB3 is currently connected to my old stereo amplifier which
feeds the speakers. Posters here have talked about having multiple SB3s
(lucky them) - does this mean multiple amplifiers?

Q1. Must an SB3 be connected to an amplifier or can one connect an SB3
direct to speakers without a separate amplifier. If so disconnecting
the SB3 in Room 2 and taking it to Room 3 and connecting it to the
second set of speakers appears practical. Dragging other equipment
around isn't.

Q2. Does the wireless bridge function of the SB3 help in any way with
connecting additional speakers in other rooms?

[slim] PC + SB3 + Wireless Speakers - possible?

2007-02-02 Thread juniper

Can anyone advise please?
My original plan was to buy wireless speakers to pick up sound from my
PC. This was before my kids bought me the SB3 for my birthday - nice
kids!.
My PC is in Room 1. My new (fantastic) SB3 is in Room 2. It is linked
to my old stereo amplifier and speakers (also in room 2) and I am happy
with the sound. I would also like to listen to whatever when I am
working in the kitchen. How can my SB3 communicate with speakers in the
Kitchen - room 3 or somewhere else room 4? I do not want to drag the SB3
+ amplifier and speakers around the house every time I want to listen to
whatever in a different room.

Any advice much appreciated before I make a stupid decision.

Re: [slim] PC + SB3 + Wireless Speakers - possible?

2007-02-02 Thread juniper

Thanks so far I am mulling over the input to date. I do not want to play
diff music in diff rooms - just want to let the same music to follow me
around in the house without a major upheaval of equipment. I thought a
pair of wireless speakers being easily portable would achieve that.

Re: [slim] PC + SB3 + Wireless Speakers - possible?

2007-02-02 Thread juniper

Thanks Cshaida. I really appreciate the interest and contributions over
the past hour or so. I will look at the other threads and wherever else
is worth looking. I must admit I thought that my need was not unusual,
and was probably quite a key requirement for receiving internet audio
information in a household. The idea of switching the audio feed from
room to room as one moves around sounds quite appealing. The SB3 has
enabled the first key step of enabling one to receive and control
internet sourced audio at a distance from the PC.

What I think I like is the idea of the wireless router being the prime
transmission coordinator, and the PC being nearly as much a peripheral
as other equpment . I see this is achieved in Squeeze Networks which
can run independent of the PC. Thus I would like the router to transmit
signals to the SB3 and then onward via the amplifier to both local and
wireless speakers.

Re: [slim] PC + SB3 + Wireless Speakers - possible?

2007-02-02 Thread juniper

Thanks Aubuti. Sadly extra SBs are out of the current budget. What I
would really like to understand is how I could technically achieve this
with wireless speakers. I have read that the Saitek A-250 is a
reasonable wireless stereo speaker - possibly not at a quality that
would appeal to Audiophiles but good enough in a busy household during
the working day.
