Re: [slim] What's your favorite device for remotely controlling your Squeezebox?

2011-04-13 Thread nacmacfeegle

I'll play..
Ipeng on Pod, Pad and Phone:- best for browsing lining up playlists
etc.
Stock issue candy bar IR remote:- mostly kitchen use to quickly power
up and get the favourites going.
Harmony one in the lounge for powering everything up together and to
get going, after that it goes back on the cradle in favour of something
with graphic feedback.
Moose on a netbook, very nice but now bypassed in favour of Ipeng.
I've never really liked the web gui and only ever use it for
maintenance.

As far as I understand it, the 128 streams play fine over the
Squeezenetwork and Squeezecentre, I can certainly vouch for this.
The downloads are DRM'd and won't play over the SC once saved on the
PC. There are probably ways of getting round the DRM such as burning
to CD-audio and re-ripping, but I don't really know an awful lot about
that.

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-20 Thread nacmacfeegle

The Nacmacfeegle are a set of characters in Terry Pratchett's books.
OStensibly Scottish, with definite west coast accents. They are
mischevious pictsies thrown out of fairy land for getting drunk and
partying too much. They have a fear of their real names being written
down and used against them by lawyers. So it makes quite a good online
persona.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nac_Mac_Feegle

I adopted this one a long time ago for a skydiving forum, and use it
here and on AVforums as well.

If you've never read a Pratchett book before, do yourself a favour and
try one out....

Re: [slim] Switch SB3 from SC to SN before turning on

2008-10-22 Thread nacmacfeegle

Hi sand,
maybe the server power control plugin might be of use
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521

I use XP on my servers, and have this plugin to automagically switch
the Squeezeboxes to Squeezenetwork when I power off the server via the
SB remote. It will also shut down and switch to SN after a definable
period of inactivity on the SBs. You can specify the
shutdown/sleep/hibernate etc state of the server from the plugin
settings. I'm not sure if it would work with your NAS and it may
depend on it's OS.

I have different fonts/savers on the boxes for SN and SC so I can tell
at a glance whether the server is off or not.

Alternatively you could disable wake on lan at your NAS.

Re: [slim] How to Purchase IR Blaster in the UK?

2008-03-10 Thread nacmacfeegle

Okay, I loaded up the IR blaster plugin (from here
http://www.gwendesign.com/slimserver/dev_hard_and_software.htm#irblaster
)at the weekend, set it to 'repeater' mode (no learning)and it worked
fine with stock IR repeaters from Xantech.
I was using an SB3 with SC7 on win xp via a wifi link. It happily
repeated signals to a Sky plus box (via a 'digisender') and a sony DVD
player.I have the type with two senders on each cable and I didn't try
the set up via a multi way connector.

It wouldn't repeat IR signals when the server pc was switched off,
which kind of makes sense really.

I would have played more but Scotland were winning at the rugby for a
change!

Hi... Non-geek here, puters?-- fly them, I don't fix them..

The best thing I did in my Squeeze experience was to get a 'Network for

this aspect and lets face it, setting up and understanding (if only on
basic terms) the network properly is key to a joyful relationship with
the Squeezies.

The book I got even had nice pictures, which is always good for the Non

Instead of someone writing a manual, perhaps some recommendations on
good books, or sources of guidance....

Question: Would you buy a Slim Devices/Logitech branded amp?

- YES!
- NO!

I voted no, but didn't elaborate.
Its simple really, I already have, or can procure, suitable amps or
powered speakers that match my budget needs, audio quality
requirements, and decor/form factor tastes.
I'd rather the good guys and girls at Slim focussed on ironing out the
few remaining bugs on their Duet/Jive projects, and all the other great
things they do, rather than be distracted by developing an amp that
physically matches the reciever / sb3 / transporter.
After all making amps isn't their core business and that market is
already pretty much catered for, at all budget levels.

Given that the new reciever is so small, I'd expect it to be hidden in
many installations, I certainly have a few ideas I'd like to try out
with it.

Re: [slim] SlimServer iTunes plugin...

2008-01-29 Thread nacmacfeegle

"Any changes in music library always require a
SlimServer rescan, regardless of the source."

I'm pretty sure that if you 'browse music folder' via the SB to your
changed music directories, eg a new album etc, then you don't need a
rescan.

Re: [slim] Media monkey with slimserver?

2008-01-25 Thread nacmacfeegle

In the past I have created playlists in Mediamonkey and saved the m3u
files into my playlist directory which is then picked up by Slimserver,
no problems. I keep my playlist files in the same directory as the main
main music, FWIW my directory is called AA1 playlists so it is always
near the top when I browse music folder via the SB3 remote. Obviously
Slimserver is told to look here for playlists.
I'm not at my home so can't go through the process step by step, but
its pretty straightforward, which is just as well really.....

Re: [slim] Is my Squeezebox 3 dead?

2007-12-21 Thread nacmacfeegle

Sounds like an issue I had as well, with an out of warranty SB3, Do a
search here I came up with a thread that discussed removing the wirless
card from the unit, mine sprang back into life and now works fine in
wired mode via homeplugs. Obviously this needs to be done at your own
risk. You'll need some TorX screwdrivers to open the case.

Re: [slim] Wow - Squeezebox in Frys

2007-12-12 Thread nacmacfeegle

I saw one set up but not running in PCWorld (UK outlet)in Aberdeen
recently too, they are also on the PC World christmas gifts flyer that
came with Radio Times, or something similar.

Great to see them in the mainstream, but I suspect we might be able to
pick some up on e-bay as 'unwanted gifts' in the new year.....

Seems to be working fine up here on the North East coast of Scotland.
Normally no problems either as this is one of my favourites.

I bought one in the UK and ordered one direct from SD. How do they
know who has how many?

[slim] Re: What's next from Slim? Speculate here.

2006-05-09 Thread nacmacfeegle

Next from those fine folks at Slim Devices?, Okay, I’ll surface from
deep lurk to add my tuppence worth.

I think they should be attacking the Sonos/Streamium type market. For
the average Joe, the SB is still very much a high tech ‘geek’
orientated device. Just look at the nature of the posts on this forum
as an example. To make it really big I think they should be going for a
market with minimum set up stress in mind.

If Slim made a base station that consisted of say a wireless router
(pre set to talk to the owner’s SBs), and hard drive, and, if the
assembly was quiet enough a built in player, they could then market SBs
preconfigured to talk to the base straight out of the box. The base
station would probably look like a smallish Tivo type HiFi component. A
‘Slim NAS and Squeezebox combo’ if you like

The base station could have a standard network connection so it could
be integrated into an existing network if users desired, and for
updating etc. Or/and it could have a usb connection that could take
updates from a thumb drive, or music from a PC, it could even have
future expansion with internal slots for additional drives. This
architecture might form the basis for in-car setups, and those who have
a desire to take their networks camping, sailing, onto Everest (or
anywhere beyond the current range of a domestic WiFi) with them.

If the SBs formed a mesh like the Sonos then all the better.

I’ve recently got the Slim bug, but a month ago I didn’t have any
networking experience, (absolutely none at all, I literally didn’t know
DHCP from an IP address) and have had a few nights of ‘tweaking’ to get
everything set up and working. From my limited research, Sonos scores
over the Slim stuff in ease of setup, and that can be an attractive
thing to some folks. I had to go out and buy a ‘networks for dummies’
type book (best 10 quid I’ve spent recently!) to set up a WiFi to take
full advantage of my two SB3s.

Of course, people will still want to customise their installations, as
they do now, and I’d hate to see the evolutionary nature die because of
any Slim standardisation or some sort of technical ‘lock down’ as part
of the simplification.

So for the future, maybe a ‘dumbed down’ Slim base and preconfigured
SBs, all talking to each other straight out of the box, just like a
Sonos.

[slim] Re: A Silly Poll

2006-04-13 Thread nacmacfeegle

My bairn is almost 4, he loves the squeezebox especially when the
'jumping beans' (equaliser screensaver) dance to his favourite songs.
He knows how to cue them up by pressing the favourite button then the
play button on the remote.
