Re: [slim] Harmony Remote and Power Cycling SB3

2008-01-29 Thread oriordan

It works fine when I use the power button on the SB remote. That was
what led me to believe it's a Harmony issue.

>From a symptom point of view, it's almost like the Harmony is sending a
"Play - Power Off" sequence when powering off and a "Power On - Play"
sequence when powering on.

[slim] Harmony Remote and Power Cycling SB3

2008-01-28 Thread oriordan

I have a Harmony 659 which works fine controlling my SB with one
exception. My SB is configured to "Pause on power off/Remain Paused at
Power On". However when I use the Harmony to turn the system off, I can
see that it is sending some command to restart playing right before
powering down. When I power on, it always starts playing again. I tried
manually learning the Power Toggle command from the SB remote but that
didn't have any effect.

I also tried configuring the SB for "Stop on power off/Remained Stopped
at Power On" but have the same results.

The 659 is somewhat less flexible in terms of configuration options
than other Harmony remotes; there isn't a lot of option for tweaking
basic on/off commands.
I'd like to fix this since it's a bit annoying to always have music
coming on the minute I turn on the system.

Any tips or pointers welcomed.

Re: [slim] Crossfade problems with 6.5.2?

2007-06-19 Thread oriordan

Looks like rescanning the library fixed the problem. I was able to
re-enable the plug-ins and still have everything work properly.

It's odd that I had to do a complete rescan when I upgraded to 6.5.1 to
solve some problems and now a complete rescan when moving to 6.5.2 to
fix this.

In any case, problem solved and thanks for the help.

Re: [slim] Crossfade problems with 6.5.2?

2007-06-17 Thread oriordan

I do have the iTunes update plug-in installed. It's possible that I
didn't have iTunes running when I hit this problem. Let me try
that...OK just tried it but no luck.

I ensured I have iTunes running. I played one song and noticed that the
display on the SB3 froze with 11 seconds left to play on the song. The
song completed and then there was about 14 seconds of silence. The next
song started and the display came back to life. I thought this might
have been a one-time thing so I tried it again, and exactly the same
sequence happened.

This is new since 6.5.2; I had the iTunes updater running since 6.5.1
with no obvious issues.

[slim] Crossfade problems with 6.5.2?

2007-06-17 Thread oriordan

I had been having a problem with 6.5.1 that several other people on the
forums had commented on - the last fraction of a second of all songs
being cut off. I was anxious to upgrade to 6.5.2 since I had heard that
the problem was resolved there. Now I have the opposite problem - there
is a long pause between songs, as though Fade Out was select. I have
checked the Crossfade settings to ensure they're off. I even tried
turning turning them on, then exiting, then turning them off, etc.
Configuring the device locally rather than from the PC had the same
results.

Any suggestions on resolving this? Listening to the 2nd side of Abbey
Road is now impossible since there's about a 5-10 second delay between
the tracks which are supposed to be contiguous...

TIA

[slim] Re: End of song is cut off

2007-01-29 Thread oriordan

I am having the same problem with the last quarter of a second or so of
all songs being cut off. I initially upgraded to a nightly image in
order to use the iTunes update plug-in and that's when I noticed the
problem. I thought it might be the iTunes update plug-in but disabling
it and rebooting didn't make any difference; I still hear the end of
each song being clipped.

I already had an email thread going with Daniel in the support team; I
have pointed him to this thread and hope he'll file a bug or tell me if
it's a known issue. I'll update this thread when I hear from him.

[slim] Gaps between songs in 6.5.1

2007-01-08 Thread oriordan

I recently upgraded to 6.5.1 (nightly build) to be able to use the
iTunes update plug-in. Since the upgrade, I've noticed that songs seems
to start with no gap between them which I don't think was the case on
the official 6.5.0. I've confirmed that my Crossfade settings haven't
changed and I can't find any other config setting to adjust this
inter-song gap. Is this a change in 6.5.1 and if so is there a way to
configure a gap between songs?

Just to close this thread out, I got some nice support from Daniel at
slimdevices. He confirmed that some sample files where I was having

complete uninstall and reinstall of SlimServer fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help along the way. I know a lot more about tags now
than I did before ;-)

To answer the first point, the 30 - 40 second delay on selecting
"Browse Albums" is with nothing happening; no music playing, etc. I
assume it's the time it takes to get the entire library loaded. My
laptop is configured to not spin down the HD and while I have several
windows open (Outlook, IE, Excel, etc.), there aren't any other heavy
duty applications actively running at the time.

You are right that it's nothing to do with transcoding at this point
since nothing is playing.

As a side experiment, if I launch Slimserver on my PC, and click on
"Browse Albums", it takes about 15 seconds for the library to appear.

The second delay (from "play" to music actually starting) may be
attributable to transcoding. Since I'm not an expert in this area (can
you tell?) can someone suggest how I'd convert an album to a lossless
format so I can see if that makes a difference?

[slim] Re: Long delay before music plays with SB3

2006-08-10 Thread oriordan

Here are some numbers I measured last night:
>From Browse Albums, I push Right Arrow. It takes about 30-40 seconds
for the 1st album to display.

>From the time I select a song to the time it starts playing takes about
20 seconds for the first song after turning SB3 on. There is no delay
when it goes to play the next song. I suspect this is the time it takes
to load mov123.exe and lame.ext

If I select a different song entirely, it takes about 8-10 seconds.

Do these numbers seem reasonable? If my theory about loading the
transcoder programs is correct, is there a way to pre-start them so
that delay can be removed?

(which requires LAME)file format and reinstalled Quick Time. I'll try
all these changes tonight and report back.

[slim] Re: Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

2006-08-09 Thread oriordan

Yes, I'm using iTunes integration. YOu are right that it can cause Dups
but I am not dealing with Dups here. The Dups that iTunes typically
causes are songs being repeated (i.e. 20 songs showing up in an album
that has 10 tracks). What I have is songs from a single CD being split
into 2 different albums by Slimserver, without any duplication.

[slim] Re: Long delay before music plays with SB3

2006-08-09 Thread oriordan

Thanks for the responses. Answers to both threads:

The system has 512K of memory. There's between 50K and 100K free in the
steady-state. It's hard for me to gauge CPU utilization right when this
is happening since the SB3 is in another room.

The files were all imported using iTunes with a .M4A filetype. mp3tag
tells me they're all in MPEG-4 AAC format. How can I tell if I'm
transcoding or not?

[slim] Long delay before music plays with SB3

2006-08-08 Thread oriordan

I'm having performance issues when using SB3 to the point that my wife
wants to throw the thing away. Menus to navigate (e.g. Browse Music ->
Browse Albums) are very sluggish.

Worse, it can take easily 60 seconds from the time I select a song to
the time it actually starts playing. It gets to the point where we're
not sure if the box is actually responding or not, and definitely far
too long when our 4-year old wants to hear her favourite song right
now...

Once I select an album and it starts playing, there are no break-ups,
clicks, pops, or delays; it moves smoothly from one track to the next.
But stopping an album and choosing something else puts me back in the
same mode, though definitely not as slow as on the initial selection).

I have an IBM T42 Thinkpad running Win XP; connectivity is via a wired
ethernet. I am running 6.3 on the SB3. My library has about 500 albums
and 6000 tracks so it's reasonably large.

Things seem to have gotten worse recently. I assume all the delays are
on the PC side. Any suggestions on fixes, or where to look for the
source of the long delays?

I did what you said and mp3tag seems to show that they're all

the first 4 songs below and one with the last 13. Here's the exported

[slim] Re: Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

I downloaded mp3tag but it didn't show any obvious differences between
the tracks grouped as one album and the tracks grouped as a separate
one. I also am not running MusicMagic. I've noticed that it's typically
the last track on the album that's split off by itself, but I did check
that the TOTALTRACKS count is correct. I was going to copy and paste
the tag info into this thread but I don't think mp3tag lets me do it.

Any other suggestions?

[slim] Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

2006-08-06 Thread oriordan

I have about 500 Albumes in my iTunes Library. After tidying it up, I
cleared the Slim library and rescanned the entire iTunes library. I now
have several cases of a single CD being split into 2 different albums by
Slim. I've checked both iTunes and the actual directory (e.g. ...\My
Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\The Beatles\) to confirm that
the entire CD is in fact contained as a single entry in iTunes.

Any suggestions on how to get Slim to collapse these back into a single
album entry? It's annoying to hear only half an album when you put it
on...

TIA

Peter

[slim] Deleting songs from library?

2006-02-01 Thread oriordan

I am an iTunes user. I would like to be able to exclude songs that
Squeezebox can't play (e.g. songs I bought from the iTunes store). I'd
also like to be able to delete some of the playlists that I have in
iTunes. I don't want to uncheck them in iTunes because then they won't
get sync'd to my iPod. Is there a way to edit my Slim music library, or
does it always include everything it finds?

Apologies if this is has already been covered. I couldn't find it in a
