That's $900 dollars profit. Sounds good to me.

$50 for an ARM-based board and $50 for a half-decent DAC. Size of a
cigarette packet. The pre-production models already available from the
Chinese guys at your local airport are good enough for most people.

I usually find my answer to polls is "none of the above".

I don't I need another squeezebox player; I already have 12 logitech
devices and a bunch of other toys to stream music. But if logitech came
out with something like the revue which actually worked I'd probably buy
one. It would have to have certain features, though...

So I answered "yes sub $1000" and "no".

Nah. There are loads of people already developing squeezebox-compatible

hear music differently to the non-disabled. I'm physically unable to

Which is why I use Logitech SB. :)

Yes. :)

I regret not buying the programmer for the Mrs.'s aid. It once got wet
and reverted to factory settings, although since it was still whistling
it must be working.

Like the UE's, this is realtime sensory modification. With a little bit
of imagination, Logitech could corner the market in mobile auditory
experience. Your Logitech Ultimate Phonaks could cut out background
noise, optimise for your surroundings, tailor your ambiance, eq to
taste, and let you hear the sound of your own voice louder than
everything else. With your LMS backend, there would be plugins available
which allowed you to selectively filter out things you didn't like, such
as politicians or management speaking...

What?

Sure; but in a situation when both players are wired and only mp3 is
streaming?

It's not actually a pure sync problem. The synchronization is pretty
solid once it's established, but it sometimes hesitates when it starts,
then often stops between tracks. I can usually get it going again by
skipping backwards and forwards between tracks, but I shouldn't need to.
After living with this for months and spending some time trying to
interpret the masses of debugging output (which to me looks like a
project abandoned partway through due to lack of interest), I decided to
replace my lovely precious SliMP3s with some other Squeezeboxen. Just a
couple of weeks before The Announcement.

If SliMP3 sync is broken, I'm guessing squeezeslave is, too.

I ordered my first SliMP3 on November 22, 2002. It still works just
fine, although I have no idea where the remote went.

I don't disagree with any of that. What I'm talking about is my
investment in the software which is now LMS, and the stuff I've built
around it over the last decade. I want it to continue improving, rather
than degenerating into a radio tuner.

I'm glad someone's brought this up.

IMO, we should refuse to have anything to do with the UE stuff on the
Squeezebox forum. Let's see how well Logitech cope with supporting their
users without additional resources from the community. Maybe just for a
while, in the hope that we might get some firmer commitment from them to
LMS -- see who blinks first.

Because if it carries on like this somebody's going to fork. The world
doesn't need another bunch of almost-identical distro fanbois
willy-waving.

It depends what you mean by "properly". I find iPeng gets it almost
right, to the point where, wandering around the house, I don't notice it
as bad synchronization, it's more like being at an open-air festival.

Without some heavyweight algorithms to cope with the rubbish timers in
most hardware, it really depends on how much work the developer is
prepared to do to get it right on a specific platform.

So, *some* bug fixing. Updates when absolutely necessary.

These days I'm a unhappy professional Solaris admin. I can smell Legacy
Software a mile off. But most companies make at least some effort to
drag their customers along with them when they introduce The Next Big

The main problem would be memory. Yeah, Google says that the ATV2 only
comes with 256M, which is probably not enough to do anything useful as a
server (like the Touch). But the ATV3 has 512MB: enough to satisfy quite
a few people.

Datapoint: Apple only sold 3 Million of these ATV boxes last year, but
that's OK, because they think of them as a "corporate hobby".

FWIW, I picked up a Dell SX270 for about $60 on eBay. Ugly little thing,
but works really well running LMS+Debian.

How do you know Amazon UK are sold out?

If it's the long delivery estimate, I think that's just because they
ship them from various places in Europe, rather than keeping any UK
stocks. I've had that with several toys I've ordered recently, and they
never take that long to arrive. Fingers crossed.

XBMC has squeezebox plugins. The controller/artwork display is OK, but
the player is just a squeezeslave. The showstopper for me was that it
grabs the audio output and doesn't integrate nicely with the psychedelic
visualiser. If that worked I'd probably be using it instead of my
Chumby.

I could live without the hardware, but LMS is what I'll miss most,

I'm something of an obsessive performance geek when I get the time. I've
tried ZFS in the NAS, adding SSDs to the ZFS, using 15K "enterprise"
disks with a caching controller; using an SSD in the LMS box, an
additional jumbo-framed SAN, and running LMS on CPUs way too powerful.
Amongst other things. All a waste of time and money.

With dbhighmem enabled, what made the biggest difference to performance
for me is this:

push @{$sql}, 'PRAGMA cache_size = 200';

in Utils/SQLiteHelper.pm.

Cunning. How would this work on Windows?

Re: [slim] What is purpose of #EXTURL in playlist?

2011-08-28 Thread pallfreeman

You can safely delete any lines beginning with a "#". These are
comments.

SBS uses #EXTURL to be smarter, but it will regenerate it when it feels
the urge.

Re: [slim] Blocking Incoming Connections...

2011-08-28 Thread pallfreeman

Your ISP is assigning a random address. At both ends. Without some third
party to keep track of these addresses, neither end of your setup knows
which address to use to get to the other.

Dynamic DNS solves these problems to some extent. Check if your DSL
routers have the ability to register with a Dynamic DNS provider. You
might be able to get hold of some little utility to do this from your
PC, but it's the other end which really needs it.

I'm not sure why you think SSH can help. Surely it would have the same
problem, not knowing the addresses, as SBS has?

Probably, though, the worst that could happen is that someone who knows
what you're up to could get access to your SBS and loudly play you
Merzbow's greatest hits.

It's a reasonable assumption, although it will allow about 250 other
people to connect. :)

SBS tells me that Block Incoming Connections only applies to HTTP and
CLI connections. It may not work for players, only for browsers. It
only seems to want addresses, and not names.

If it works with names, you could register the remote player with a
DDNS provider.

Re: [slim] The 7.6.x lingering issues thread

2011-08-08 Thread pallfreeman

Hopefully, that's the last of my significant problems with 7.6 sorted,
and my Radios will stop turning themselves on.

I have three Radios. Two out of three firmware updates had problems. I
got the "Unable to download update, please retry or contact support"
screen, repeatedly, and couldn't cancel the update with the Back or
Home buttons. Rebooting the Radios by holding the power button fixed
it, and all three are OK. Please.

I think a fix is in the works. There's already new firmware for the
Touch (r9464) which stomps on some of these problems, but the Radio is
usually a few days behind (because it's harder to revert).

Re: [slim] LastFM broken for all Squeezebox devices

2011-07-31 Thread pallfreeman

I just had a fiddle with the GF's Boom, playing from a local SBS. It
scrobbles the tracks OK, but hitting the "+" button on the remote,
instead of giving me the "Love Track" prompt, instead removes the track
from the playlist! There seems to be something odd going on here.

On the Radio, I also see the "Empty" popup, but the track is "Loved"
OK.

I use a 16-bit netmask on my core network; I think this is why the
auto-discovery protocol gives me problems. I was unable to find a way
to enter the SBS address into the Logitech App, hence: it doesn't work
for me.

Although I've used a Mac for years I didn't own an iThingy until I got
an iPod touch a couple of months ago, just to run iPeng. The learning
curve was nearly vertical, but I'm now a fairly happy iPeng user.

I'm from the North of England. We don't do smilies.

Thanks for confirming that. I had assumed it was simply my ignorance
