Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2
I've recently upgraded to SC v7.2. The upgrade went fine and I re-scanned etc... without issues. But I have noticed an odd behaviour just recently. When using the web interface (with Fishbone skin), when playing tracks back from a playlist, the displayed Artist info is not always updated properly (it would still show as the previous artist) when moving to the next song and the Album info would be updated correctly but clicking on the link would actually take me to the previously played album listing. A reload of the web page sets everything properly. On top of all this, this behaviour seems to come and go - ie: not 100% repeatable. I'll have to see if does the same thing with the stock skin. I've cleared my cache etc... to see if that fixes it but it does not. Has anyone else observed this? Very strange. -- shabbs [shabbs] *Rip/encode:* 'EAC' (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) v0.99 prebeta 4 [secure] w/ 'Lame' (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html) v3.98 [-V 0] *Audio:* 'SB1' (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_squeezebox.html) --> Technics SA-DX1040 --> customs; 'SB3' (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_squeezebox.html) --> Yamaha RX-V661 --> JBL E30's shabbs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6016 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51633 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter won't populate album art
Ugh. I had this very same issue. I use AVGFree which does not let you specify an exclusion list (the for-pay edition does), nor does it seem to have a quick and easy way to unload the resident real-time scanner. I ended up having to uninstall AVG and move to ClamWin as my AV solution in order to get the scan going properly. ClamWin does not have an on-access real-time scan engine like AVG does, so we'll see if I stick with this solution. [slim] Re: Introducing..... me!
Joe Blow - heh heh - up here in Canada, we call him Joe SixPack. My reply below is more towards Jim's question of "WHY do they realize it's great? Do you have a particularly cool way of demoing the features?". I have been an SD customer since the SB1 came out. I remember when the SliMP3 came out but I was just beginning to understand digital music at that time and did not realize what it really represented. When the SB1 came out, I picked it up and was hooked. I have since bought an SB3 as well and will most certainly purchase more products from SD as they continue to grow. Every time we have guests over to our house, they see the SB3 in our living room, notice that it's showing info about the music that is currently playing and start to ask questions about it. When I begin to explain the setup (mp3s, home network, home stereo, slim server etc...) one of two things happen: they get the concept and are interested, or they gloss over and don't understand. When I see people glossing over, I usually bring them back to reality with a quick summary, show how the remote can access the music wicked fast (even letting them try it) and then get them a drink as they listen to the music. For the ones that get it, they usually want more details on how it all works, how much does it cost and where they can get one. After that, their reaction is usually "Man, that sounds like too much work." or "Damn that's expensive." or "I'll be getting one of those real soon". To date, I've only had one buddy actually buy one after seeing mine, the rest I'm still working on. The "oohs and aahs" usually come from the following: - How quickly I can access all my music using the remote (search, genre, playlists etc...) - The look of the browser interface with album art etc... that can control my Squeezeboxen - The sound. "That's an MP3 we're hearing? Wow it sounds just like the CD" (neither myself, my equipment or my friends are Audiophile-quality btw) - The plug-ins ("Hey, it says the Giants are up 28-0 over Philly in the 3rd! Cool!" - Synching the SB1 in my basement with the SB3 upstairs - Internet radio integration (everyone has heard of Shoutcast) The other oohs and aahs are for the Harmony 880 remote which controls my whole entertainment system. I find everyone loves the sound and look of the SB3, but don't want to spend the time/effort to set it up and get it done right. The "iPod crowd" gets it, but would rather just plug their iPod in to their stereo. The "non techie crowd" just wants something they can plug in and work right away and not need a dedicated server to run the show. The "techie crowd" understands right off the bat but the decision then comes down to cost/effort. I'm always showing it off when we have guests over that are interested and I will continue to do so because I feel it is the best product out there for streaming digital music. My $0.02. I've been trying to isolate what's up with the Artist count in SS and where it pulls the data for it from. Part of that search has led me to this "Album Artist" tag (or "TPE2" or "Band" depending on the file format). Some new apps (WMP11b and iTunes7) seem to be populating it now. There seems to be a large difference of opinion on how this tag should be used wrt to VA. I don't want to code my tags "just for SS", I'd rather code them using the proper standard. The Foobar WIKI at HA I linked is just one example of a group trying to suggest a standard. I'm just trying to sort though all the confusion. ;) Slimpy - I appreciate the info. [slim] Re: Looking for Good Info on Album Art Downloading
Here's my "Album Artwork" setup if it helps: - Each album is in a seperate folder in my overall heirachy - I create two artwork files in each folder: --> folder.jpg (200x200 pixels) --> albumartsmall.jpg (75x75 pixels) - I embed the folder.jpg image as Album Art inside each MP3 using Tag&Rename. SS then uses the folder.jpg image as the "large image" when looking at the album info in the SS web interface. It uses albumartsmall.jpg as the "thumbnail" image when browsing the albums gallery. I think the embedded image is displayed in the "now playing info" in the web interface as the track is played. I manually downloaded all my album artwork from web sites like amazon.com/music, allmusic.com, allofmp3.com and search on images.google.com when I can't find it on a music site. Hope that helps. Out of curiosity, I checked my FileCache and it was pretty large. I ran the cachedump script and it produced an output that contained nearly 500 lines that referenced "fitstretch-100-100-0" on each line. Is this for the resizing of the Album Art? FileCache folder size: 162MB, 18,253 files, 4,340 folders Is that reasonable to expect? EDIT: My cover art is structured as such: Each album is in it's own folder. They each have their own strenghts and weaknesses in various areas (screen door effect of RPLCD if you are too close, rainbow effects of DLPs etc...). You need to find the one that fits you best and fits your budget. It's also good to understand HDTV and the different types: 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc... This is an old article but is still a good read. http://www.projectorcentral.com/hdtv_edtv.htm Some other good links here: Buying an HDTV: http://www.digitalhome.ca/content/view/1364/98/ Choosing the right size of HDTV: http://www.digitalhome.ca/content/view/1399/98/ You also need to be aware of the native resolution of the TV you are buying. To display 1080i content natively, your TV will need 1080 lines of resolution. A lot of sales guys will talk about TRUE HD - just be careful you know the specs of the products your looking at and understand the limitations. A TV with 720 lines of native resolution will always down-convert a 1080i signal to fit in its 720 lines. Also - find out how much HD programming you can really access. A lot of people assume the HD channels are showing HD all the time. That's not really the case. Most channels only have a few hours a week of new HD content and the rest is SD. But it is growing. I've still got my original SB1 remote and it's neither damaged nor worn and has seen consistent use. It has survived a move too. I too was of the impression that the remote was flimsy and looked cheap, but at the end of the day, it gets the job done just fine. I'd rather SD keep the cost of the SB low by supplying a minimal remote and focusing efforts on the SB internals. Also, the SB can be easily controlled via a Universal remote. I now have a Harmony 880 that I use to control my SB and barely touch the original remote, unless it's closer to me than the Harmony. ;) Heh heh. I too have the Harmony 880 and love it. The wife was getting sick of wading through so many remotes. She is now very happy, and so am I. Money very well spent. This device looks great and it sounds like it will address the audiophile's needs out there with what they've put in the box. It's beyond my price point but it sounds about right for the audiophile niche market. Kudos to Slim Devices for listening to their fans and delivering. Good luck with this product - we'll all be watching closely. Hopefully this will help take Slim to yet another next level. Is there anything out there that would compete with this product?
