[slim] Promotion codes?

2008-09-20 Thread shvejk

In the good old days forum readers were sometimes rewarded with
promotion codes and even ponies. Since amazon.com sells Boom for $278

I don't think there is a way for a plugin to put menus directly on the

Yes, it can be done using Player Settings - Menus

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-07 Thread shvejk

A power outlet and some powered speakers with the remote in its cradle
may well be an outdoor hit though.

Yes, I agree.

Logitech sells quite good portable speakers with iPod dock. It should
be easy to adopt them to Squeezebox Controller.

Logitech should have this option available right at the product
announcement to avoid all the why am I paying so much for a remote?
questions. Or at least a clear product roadmap...

Anyway for geeks reading the forums it is still exciting option to look
for in the future.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-07 Thread shvejk

To control an SBR one needs the new $250.00 controller so going the new
route would cost me $400.00 for one extra SB(R).

Hopefully, this will quickly be addressed by Logitech or by the
community. I cannot imagine a reason the controller could not be setup
by plugging a PC to the Ethernet port.

Otherwise, your option is to buy the controller and the SBR separately,
configure your SBR and return the controller. It is kind of silly.

Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC

2007-04-04 Thread shvejk

I hope Slim Devices choses to support non-DRM ACC files.
Yes, they do, through transcoding. I'm wondering why this is such a
problem?

Good question. AAC is supported through transcoding. In a typical
SlimServer + SB scenario transcoding works well and there is no
problem.

AAC support in firmware is needed when you want to avoid transcoding.
For example when SlimServer is setup on a NAS or the music is stored
online ( Oboe Locker ). Someone could argue that these are very
specific scenarios and that number of users interested in the requested
enhancement is tiny. However, since both WMA and OGG support was added
to the firmware in the past, there is still hope that this will be
addressed in the future...

Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC

2007-04-03 Thread shvejk

Now if you wanted to pay an extra chunk of money to Slimdevices so
they could pay a licensing fee to Apple, you might get somewhere.

The licensing fees seem reasonable to me. I am happy to pay a couple of
extra $ to cover the cost.

http://www.vialicensing.com/Licensing/MPEG4_fees.cfm?product=MPEG-4AAC

On the other hand, why should Slimdevices put themselves at a
competitive
disadvantage price-wise in order to support a proprietary format
when
there are great, free, lossless formats such as flac available?

I am not asking for the free formats to be removed. It is great that
they are supported. This is about making the great player even better
and attracting new customers.

Similar arguments had been made before wma support was added to the
player firmware. Today we can clearly see that it was a great decision.
Pandora, Rhapsody, SN support of many internet radio stations, all made
possible because of that.

Indeed, why would anyone have chosen a proprietary format over a
free
one in the first place- oh yeah, those Ipods are s cute!

iTunes customer base is huge, if you like it or not. It makes sense to
enhance SB compatibility with iTunes music.

Cheers,

And we still would have been left with our working boxes and SlimServer

Logitech must keep Sean (and the SD team) happy for a while. Otherwise,

There is not that much value in the SD brand/hardware/firmware. It
could be replicated.

Logitech has bought the team and there is a hope they will not break it

Congratulations to Sean. I've been watching your work since Slimp3 was

individual can still achieve something great in this corporate
dominated world. I am glad that SlimDevices have proven to be
successful. On the other hand, today is a sad day for many of your
fans. It is an end of the era. Good luck for the future.

Corporate America is focused on maximizing profits. Build your product
as cheaply as possible. Sell as much as possible. Ignore your customers
as much as the laws allow you to. SlimDevices approach was so different,
that is it almost unimaginable to be preserved in the future. Will I be
able to add new features to my SB2 by simply refreshing the firmware
with no extra cost? I would expect a corporation to push SB4 on me
instead of offering free upgrade of my SB2. We will see...

[slim] Re: Slimserver on Evesham mini-pc

2006-03-17 Thread shvejk

Assuming that the PC is dedicated to Slimserver and that your music
collection is 100GB, the PIII HP ePC plus Michael's SlimCD is a much
cheaper option and it runs great.

With some bidding luck on eBay, you can have a running Slimserver PC
for about $100. It does not look as sexy as MAC mini, but you can
easily hide it somewhere in a closet.

Most ePCs are sold with 128MB or 256MB of RAM and, for that reason,
WinXP is not recommended, but SlimCD solves the lack of Linux skills
problem.

Hope it helps with your decision.

See iPod Hi-Fi review at http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2006/03/ipodhifireview/index.php
From the review, Zvox mini compared to iPod Hi-Fi:

ZVOX mini ($200; $300 with battery and carrying case): The Mini, which is currently in our review queue, is in many ways the closest system to the iPod Hi-Fi: Although it doesn't include an iPod dock or remote control, it's a one-piece, box-shaped speaker system, designed to replace a traditional bookshelf stereo, with much more presence than you would expect. Although the Hi-Fi gives you better bass, the ZVOX system provides more treble detail (perhaps too much for some people), as well as slightly better imaging and a much wider overall soundstage—more than any other one-piece system mentioned here. It's also much smaller. Who will prefer it? People who want a bigger soundstage and more detail, or those who like the Hi-Fi but need better portability.

[slim] Is slim still good in 2006 ?

2006-01-12 Thread shvejk

The latest load/performance issues with SqueezeNetwork got me
thinking...

Is slim architecture still a good idea in 2006, when cheap embedded
devices are getting more and more powerful?

SqueezeNetwork provides ( so far ) little functionality. If the same
functionality is available in firmware, then there is no longer need
for centralized server/network infrastructure.
And when SlimDevices sell many thousands of SB3s, the cost of the
infrastructure will be very significant ( I think ).

Any comments?

That's interesting solution. Is it a PCMCIA device? Does it work with Linux?
Can you provide the name or a link to the eBay store?

You could also get USB 2.0 PCMCIA card. However, all this cost more then an 'old' desktop with a regular 3.5 ATA drive.
So, if this thing is going to sit ina corner and be a dedicated SlimServer PC, then extra cost of a laptop is not justified, in my opinion.

Get yourself HP e-Vectra Pentium III PC on eBay for less than $100
Put in a large 3.5 hard drive to fit your whole music collection.
Burn SlimCD and boot the PC from it.
In 15 minutes you will get a fully functional SlimServer including many plugins.
SlimCD works good with as little as 128MB of RAM.
Pentium III e-Vectra is small, very quiet and energy efficient.
Should also be more reliable then a laptop, which is not designed for 24/7 usage.
Make sure you get a quiet hard drive. Like older Seagate Barracuda 5400 rpm models.
The CPU fan is almost silent. The power supply is external and fanless. The hard drive is the biggest noise contributor.
Good luck. It is going to be easier to learn Linux when you have SlimCD up and running.

Re: [slim] please confirm: bridging does not make SB3 an access point

2005-11-30 Thread Josef Shvejk
it was discussed here in the past

no, SB2/SB3 is not an access point
it could be done, but since routers/access points are really cheap, it is not on any todo list

I had a Motorola wireless router connected to SB2 as access point at home, in the past, it worked fine
CompUSA recently had wireless routers for $1.99 after rebate

Yeah, but they still have the WMA support backward. SB3 natively supports WMA. No need for transcoding.

Squeeze Box is NOT one of them. You got the internals right first, and then, finally, got a nice case as well.

However, with SB3case is much more classy. The see through glass would not been good.

It is nice to see SB3 mentioned. However, the post is full of incorrect
info:

- Squeezebox scans your music libraries
- higher quality audio on this model than previous models
- 802.11g support (finally!)
- a better display

I wish they would know what they were talking about and give real
reasons the box is the best on the market.

I have been waiting for what seems like forever to buy one of theseboxes, mostly because I want it to work with a Yahoo Unlimited Music

SB2 is a unique piece of hardware. Features like WMA and DRM support can be added with firmware upgrade.
SlimDevices has a unique policy of adding new features to the firmware free of charge.
The above might not be obvious tosomeone who only readsSlim marketing materials, but for me it was a deciding factor to spend my money on SB2 just after it came out.

agreed, but SlimCD on that machine may still be challenging (the old IBMlaptops needed some black magic boot strings passed because of their
non-standard CD interfaces).

SlimCD boots fine on Thinkpad T22. I do not know about any older models.
Alternatively, you could pull out the hard drive from the laptop and hook it up to a desktop machine. Boot the desktop from SlimCd and run install to HD. It requires a bit of work, but then the laptop CD drive is not needed anymore.

Here are the SB3 features:

- cheap LCD display,
- no digital outputs,
- wma and realdecoding in firmware,
- ability to connect to a guest SqueezeNetwork account out of the box,
- new name: SqueezeRadio,
- price $99 for wired and $149 for wireless box,

Disclaimer: I have no idea what are SilimDevices future plans. I just believe that it would be a terrific option and a money maker for the company. And it would not upset any of the current SB2 owners :)

Re: [slim] Someone's dream, my nightmare.

2005-08-27 Thread Josef Shvejk

WMA and real audio would require something like Windows CE

Not necessarily. There are plenty of devices on the market which are not based on Windows CE and still decode WMA. The Ubicom chip inside SB2 is capable of doing just that.

I am not a big fun of MS solutions myself. However, there are many good stations on the net that stream in WMA. That's a fact. And SlimDevices road map clearly states that they plan to support as many formats as possible.

I am very interested in the subject as well. Here are the non-PC

http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/InstallSlimServer
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/accessories/readynas600.shtml

The Mac Mini solution has some downsides, but the obvious advantage is
flexibility. If you plan to use various plugins and server side WMA
decoding, then it is a better way to go then the non-PC options above.

Any other options/opinions please?

[slim] Streaming Windows Media

2005-06-02 Thread Josef Shvejk
I have a SlimServer 6.0.1 on Windows XP and two SB2 boxes.

I am having hard time connecting to a remote wma radio station,
because of their limited server bandwidth/availability. When the
connection is finaly established, then it works quite well (no
frequent disconnects).

Is there any way to keep the wma stream alive when none of my SB2
boxes is actualy tined in to the stream? Is SlimServer reusing the
same stream for different devices?

In other words, is only one wma stream established, when both SB2
boxes are tuned in to the same station?

Can I use WMA player on Windows XP box to keep the stream alive? Can I
use SoftSqueeze to keep the stream alive?

Thanks!
