Re: [slim] SB3 restarts songs

2007-11-07 Thread superbad

Just replying for the sake of anyone searching in the future. I
installed 7.0 beta, and my SB has been running for the last 12 hours
without a single hitch. So either something in 7.0 fixed a 6.5.x
problem, or maybe I just needed a fresh install.

And the 7.0 web interface is really sweet, nice job to everybody who
worked on that.

[slim] SB3 restarts songs

2007-11-04 Thread superbad

I've just recently started having a problem where my SB3 either 1) stops
mid song (display reads stopped), or 2) restarts at the beginning of
the current song, repeatedly.

I am pretty confident this is not a wireless issue- I've had plenty of
those in the past, and they usually manifest themselves as dropouts,
not as song stops/restarts. This problem happens even on low bandwidth
internet radio streams. My buffer fullness stays at 100% consistently.
Feels like a firmware problem, but I don't know why it's suddenly
popped up. Any ideas?

[slim] Occasional Garbled Static on Apple Lossless

2007-05-18 Thread superbad

I got a new SB3 a couple weeks ago, after several years of SB1 use. Now
I am finding that some of my Apple Lossless songs turn into garbled
static after a while (sometimes a few hours, sometimes a few seconds).
They sound like they are being played underwater- you can still
recognize the song, it's just messed up. Forum and bug search turned up
nothing. My only thought is that it could be some kind of alac problem.
Any ideas?

This is on OS X, using the 6.5.2 build from 5/18. It was set to
transcode to wav, tried switching to flac, same thing. No bitrate
limiting being used.

[slim] Help please- bad dropouts on new Mac Pro

Slimserver is pretty much unusable right now, so any help with

[slim] Feature Requset: Create playlist from current stream

2006-08-20 Thread superbad

So I am always finding good stations on Shoutcast, but when I want to
save one to my playlists, I need to go to the computer, Google the
originating site, open iTunes, manually type in the URL, save it to a

cool is an option under the right arrow, something like Save to New

There's the Favorites option there now, but that isn't something I

I wonder how hard it is to write a native DS app? It's already got the

would have all the usual browser problems.

With a native app, you could have the now playing info in the top
screen, and the navigation in the bottom touch screen. While building a
playlist, the playlist would go in the top, and the library in the
bottom. Map the arrow keys to navigate the list, use the buttons for
volume, etc. That would be so sweet.

The 360 has two real disadvantages for me: sound quality (not going to

2006-01-15 Thread superbad

This may be a little silly, but I only use allofmp3 to buy music from
artists who have been dead for at least 10 years. I figure they don't
miss the royalties too much. And if BMG or somebody misses out on a
couple bucks profit from a dead guy's work, oh well.

That said, if the record companies offered lossless downloads for less
than $1/song, I would be all over it. I would even accept DRM, but only
if it allowed me to play my music on the Squeezebox, or any other device
I might own.

Considering that's the same price they would get for a CD, and they
didn't have to manufacture, warehouse, distribute, or give a retailer
any margin, they should be jumping all over themselves to offer songs
at that price. And if they don't, then they deserve the piracy and
Russian end-runs they are getting. Lossless files at $.50 each would
eliminate %75 of music piracy, and it would kill allofmp3.

2006-01-15 Thread superbad

I don't really disagree with you at all. I still don't feel quite right
doing it, but that's the compromise I have made. Mostly I buy used CDs,
but of course the artist gets nothing from that transaction either (and
most used CDs nowadays probably leave digital files behind on the
original purchaser's computer).

Copyright used to expire a certain amount of time after the creator's
death (I think it was 70 years), but Congress (at the prodding of
lobyists from the MPAA and RIAA) has continually expanded that to the
point where works created today have essentially unlimited copyright.

And there are two separate copyright holders on a recorded piece if
music: the performer and the author. If I record an album of public
domain traditional songs, I stll have copyright over the recording.

Michaelwagner Wrote:
 But their families might.

Regardless of how you personally feel about it, society as a whole
decided, not just for music but for all copyright issues, decades ago,
that copyrights last for some period of time after the copyright holder
 has died (I think it's 50 years).

Notice that has nothing to do with the artist. The copyright holder is
the person who wrote the music, the words or both. S/He might even be
alive, even though the performer is dead. It often happens that they
don't die at the same time :-)

Get a 5.8Ghz cordless phone system. We have the Uniden PowerMax, it
works great. The problem with wifi is everything broadcasts in the
2.4Ghz range: the neighbors' wifi, cordless phones, bluetooth, wireless
mice, even your microwave.

Is the Squeezebox freaking out on internet radio, or your own music?
The other possibility is that the Vonage connection is using up enough
of your bandwidth that there isn't left over for the internet radio
stream to get through (the router will always give priority to the
voice traffic). That's pretty unlikely though.

What debug flags should I set?

[slim] Re: Pandora.com

2005-11-10 Thread superbad

Just tried it out. Interesting. I created a station based on Low that
gave me a few interesting and fairly appropriate results, but then it
threw in a Poison song. Pandora needs to keep that box shut.

Reading their explanation of how it works, it sounds like they manually
analyze each song they stream? It would seem like there is just too much
music in the world for that to be feasible in the long run. Plus you are
subject to someone making inappropriate judgements about a song
(especially if they are hurrying), and then you end up hearing
something by Poison.

On the other hand, I have found some great new bands using LastFM. It's
a good bet that someone who listens to a bunch of the same stuff you do
is also going to listen to some stuff you like but haven't heard of
yet. That seems like a much more scalable and open source kind of
approach.

[slim] Re: Don't use itunes except for playlists??

2005-10-30 Thread superbad

Sort of. There is a free program that exports your itunes playlists as
regular m3u playlist files. You can set it to run at startup, or just
run it manually whenever you make a change to your itunes library. I
can't remember the name, but I'm sure Google knows it. I was using this
setup for a while, but I didn't see much performance difference, so I
just went back to using itunes directly. This was back in the 5.4 days,
so things may be different now.

It's a shame they couldn't get the board a little narrower and package
the whole thing behind the screen. That white stripe at the bottom
doesn't look right. If it were a little bit shorter with that gloss
black covering the whole front, it would have been perfect. Actually, I
think even in the form factor shown, I would delete the white part and
just make the whole thing black.

I'll still buy one though. :)

Question: Who wants a Squeezebox Boombox?

- I'm interested.
- No, thanks.

A few more case ideas with matching speaker / battery boxes. I am
definitely scrapping the clock radio case as soon as I decide which one
I actually want. I also want a boombox version, so I would probably do a
speaker case of some kind too.

The tough part with docking the current product onto a portable speaker
unit is that you need to run wires on the outside. Ugly. Some kind of
docking port on the bottom would be ideal. I'm not sure if that's
possible with the old geek connector thing.

[slim] Case Concept

2005-09-29 Thread superbad

I had a couple hours free this morning, so I did a quick render on a
case concept I have been thinking about.

Material is 1/4 laser cut birch ply with aluminum standoffs.

The display shown is sized to match the SBG I have, even though I put
the SB2 graphic in there. The case and opening dimensions are pretty
close to the current case. Yes, the headphone port is inaccessible- I
don't use mine anyway.

Comments?

[slim] Roku Clock Radio

2005-09-19 Thread superbad

Looks like Roku has been thinking about the all-in-one market as well:
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000243059438/

Problems I see with this implementation:
(ignoring the problems inherent to Roku's approach in general)

1. It's ugly as sin.
2. Looks big.
3. It's expensive.

Is a VFD really necessary (or even desirable) for something that sits
next to your bed?

I would love to see Slim Devices do something like this, but do it
right. Whether the market is really there to make it worthwhile, I
don't know. But I'd buy a couple if they came in under $300.

2005-09-07 Thread superbad

You may have already answered this, but do you have a PC or laptop you
could connect to the server wirelessly and run Softsqueeze on? That
would test the ability of the wireless network itself to handle
streaming music- if it works, then the problem would seem to be with
the SB2.

Googling the part number printed on the circuit board, I think this is
the SB2 network card. Buying one just to test seems a bit extreme to
me.

OT

I'm sure our friends in the UK can elaborate (or correct me), but in
the UK all companies, public or private, must be registered at
Companies House, and submit financial statements. Those statements are
available to the public. I used to enjoy reading the financial
statements for all the F1 teams.

I like the openness of that system.

[slim] Re: The SB2 appears to have some serious flaws!

2005-08-01 Thread superbad

An interface proposal for the original question, a way of playing a song
without adding it to the playlist:

1. Press and hold Play on the remote to pause the current playlist
(if anything is playing) and play (preview) the selected song without
adding it to the Now Playing playlist.

2. Press Add to stop the previewed song and add it to the end of the
Now Playing playlist. Press Pause on the remote during a preview to
stop the song and jump back to whatever you were doing before the
preview.

3. Add a preview button to the web interface to do the same thing as
#1 above.

Reasonably intuitive, and not something you would happen upon without
knowing it's there (avoiding new user confusion).

Gdg, is that what you are looking for? I actually think it's not a bad
idea. I build all my playlists in itunes, but I might use SS instead if
this feature were in there. In itunes, I play a song to decide if I want
to use it, then drag it to the playlist if I do. This kind of does the
same thing.

The bad news is that I have no idea whether this is even technically
feasible in the software architecture, nor do I have the skills to
implement it if it is.

Current firmware doesn't give you an easy way to get to a web browser-
you have to do it using the game Wipeout Pure. Sony just released a new

but it's Japan only at the moment. Should make it over here soon.

You're right, that could be a good remote control.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox In Wall Kit

2005-07-07 Thread superbad

I haven't used emachineshop to actually make parts, but I did model a
part and get it quoted- the prices were pretty competitive. The biggest
drawback for me was that I would have to redraw parts, since I already
model them in SolidWorks.

I have had great success with http://www.mfgquote.com for small
machining projects. There are a lot of machine shops out there who need
business. Prices for pretty complicated parts have become ridiculously
cheap. When I get some spare time I want to make a small machined case
for the SB and have it polished.

In the server directory there is a file called strings.txt. You can
search for the phrase in that file and change it there.

Make sure you save both the original and the edited version with a
different name, because every time you update the software it will
overwrite your customized strings.txt file.

I also edited mine to say Artists instead of Browse Artists and so
on.
